User Image "It was something I noticed too, Master. It seems that whatever it is, or was, has been targeting those that still live in the older sections," Hadrian acknowledged. "Which I find odd. Passage or otherwise, that sounds like something that would have been found already. What of this curse that was mentioned? Perhaps it wouldn't have moved beyond the old bounds?" Hadrian was poring over another map, with a book held in his hand as he scoured the history. The squire was curious by a few things. If it was a curse that was bound to the original village borders, that could explain a lot, as a monster would see that more prey was in the newer areas. Something to consider.

As Hadrian poured over the tomes with his eyes he would find a reoccurring symbol at the start of the books which seemed to be missing whenever it talked about the more recent additions to the village. Some pages even had corners torn out and it could be assumed the symbol had been on those pages and other villagers had made an effort to rip it out of the book and therefore village memory. Yet each book had at least one of the symbols that the villagers seemed to have missed. It was a curious thing, the symbol, because it seemed to be a dagger. The dagger was ornate for something that was just a drawing in the corner of a few books. If investigated, the two would find out that the symbol belonged to a cult that had founded the city before knights came through and liberated it.

As they peered through old works of literature, there did happen to be one thing in common, a suspicious symbol. “We should consult someone about this symbol. It’s appeared multiple times now, but I haven’t made anything of it.” If only they’d brought a historian, having not expected a lengthy investigation, but at least the odd symbol resembling a dagger would be worthwhile to look into, especially with the missing pages and such. Perhaps the librarian would know something useful? Under normal circumstances, research wasn’t so bad, as a sharp mind was as useful as any blade, but time was of the essence and lives were at stake.

User Image Hadrian had his nose in one of the books he had taken from the cloister, as he often did before leaving on a task. This particular journey, he had a book on older cults of the Duchies and the Brittanian Kingdoms. The fact that the symbol was hidden among the pages, or torn out suggested the idea to him. "Likely a cult, as I found it in this book I took from the cloister before we left," Hadrian turned the book around. There wasn't much to the page, beyond a description of what the symbol was, the origins of the cult, and a general description of where it was last found.

"I don't get it. There was an obvious effort to erase the evidence, which stinks of a cover up, or a fear of the past." The Squire shrugged, and started packing up his books. "I would hazard the librarian has a clue. Though, there is much here that makes my brain itch."

With a nod, the knight rose up from his seat, book in hand, and pointed to the symbol in front of the librarian. “What can you tell us about these symbols consistent in these books?” he asked. Evidently they weren’t from there, and news should’ve spread fast enough about what their purpose was. Any information would do, some sort of lead at least. The depth of these mysteries led further and further into the dark, a secret history buried like nameless dead. What sort of evils hid beneath all of these secrets? So much tampering had been done with the city’s history, a frantic attempt to bury the past. It wasn’t thorough, or at least not thorough enough not to be realized.

Upon looking at the symbol the librarian seemed to become physically uncomfortable. He shifted away from the image after only briefly glancing which probably implied he knew very well what they wanted to know. "That is the symbol of The Forbidden Waters." The librarian grumbled. He was an older man and he seemed like the years had been unkind. He seemed disgruntled... who better to go to for information than a disgruntled old man. "The Forbidden Waters was a religious sect that helped us found this city in return for a place to preach their message. They've always been a problem for the town. Over the years their message became more radical. Leadership change up. The villagers kicked them out decades ago and then some wanted to remove all signs of the group. Some didn't. Books were destroyed, books were hidden. All books ended up here. Some with the symbol, some without." Sometime you didn't even need to open a book to see the most valuable story it has to tell. Sometimes the cover was enough. Sometimes a cult wrote a religious doctrine and had it stored in the library where anyone could access it if they knew to ask for it. Sometimes the back cover of such a book might have an image drawn onto it. A windmill. One that had been converted into a temple by a cult and then ultimately demolished by the villagers. If someone were to find that well... who knows what would happen?
