It had been a busy night for the right-hand man; he had his hands full investigating a sloppy murder that someone tried pinning on the werewolves, a futile effort since they followed the trail like bloodhounds. He would arrive at the manor soon enough, welcomed in by some lackeys before approaching his mistress. His hands were bloody, but it wasn’t his blood, and he had a moist cloth in hand to wipe it off. “I think I’ve found our guy, or rather…he found me,” he said, wiping off the last of the blood from his hands. “Jerald Carpenter, the traveler who decided to stay in town for a while. He didn’t say why he wanted to stick around, but we know now. He was expecting Dr. William Parrish, the archaeologist, because of a recent find he made in Europe. Dr. Parrish was going to bring his findings to a museum in the state, but Carpenter had other plans, and came to intercept Dr. Parrish. The reason?” Ross unveiled a ring, a crimson gem resting upon ancient silver, with the engraving, “Noli Timere Solis”, from Latin meaning, “Fear Not the Sun”. Those words could be taken literally or metaphorically, to pursue a dream that—despite being distant or difficult to see—was always there. It was one of the daylight rings, one of few enchanted by ancient witches to protect vampires from the sun’s terror.

Vampire327Clan Leader

There were few things that got Amelia excited in this world. Her natural calm demeanor combined with long years on this Earth. However, when her faithful servant presented the ring her eye lit up. She slowly rose from her seat and stepped forward to take the ring from Ross. “Do you know if it is real?” Such a coveted artifact, daylight rings were often counterfeited. With the buyer of such frequently burning up in the sun it left the counterfeiter unconfronted and richer. As a pure blood, she had never experienced sunlight. This could change everything. “How many know about this?” She doubted the Lyall's would be pleased to discover she was no longer bound by the sun. While on friendly terms it was a dramatic shift in power. Even within her own house it wasn't hard to imagine there were those who would attempt to take the ring from her. Best it either remained a secret or others were convinced it was a fake.

Alexander stood at the entrance to the room silent for some time before speaking to one of the leader's questions. "If not real, it is certainly old." Alexander didn't know why he was so certain of that but in seeing the ring he noted various familiar elements. The type of engraving showed similar characteristics to ancient methods and the lack of polish showed it had been intended for use more than for design. He felt oddly familiar with the concept of it. "Engraving patterns and the coloring can tell us that much. Parrish was an archaeologist so he wouldn't do anything to potentially harm the ring. Even then how could he have known it's value? Well it's value to us. "

When she came forward, he politely handed it to her. Entertainingly, the ring wasn’t an easy fit; it seemed to suit a man’s ring finger better. “I’ve yet to determine how many know about the ring, but I’ll find out. I’m sure we can figure out more about the ring itself if we find our good doctor’s notes, too. In either case, it’s better with us than some museum.” Evidently they had just gotten the ring, a few phone calls and some instructions would improve the odds that envious rivals wouldn’t come barging in demanding it. It was best to keep it a secret; they were residents of a small town, and trouble would come knocking if any major coven leader found out.

Alexander's words made sense of course, yet Amelia was hesitant to simply accept that the object in her hands was a daylight ring. It seemed impossible. No one close enough to the Elder's to possess such a thing had ever been to Direwood, much less an Elder themselves. Perhaps it had been lost before the towns founding though it seemed unlikely they had just happened to build the town on top of a daylight ring. If she had learnt one thing, it was there was no such thing as coincidence. Of course there was one simple way to know the validity of the ring for certain. “We will know for certain at sunrise. It is imperative no one beyond the three of us know about this.” And if it was legitimized? What was she to do then? “Alexander, I would kindly ask for the use of your tomb come sunrise.” It would mean spending the day there trapped, but it would certainly be noticed if she tested the ring at the manor. In such an isolated location, the tomb would be ideal for doing so without witness.

There was a momentary pause after Amelia requested to use his tomb until sunrise. Yes it was probably the safest place to test the daylight ring and yes Alexander had just recently humored another guest for a day but he found himself not wanting that ring anywhere near his tomb. It made him uneasy because of the uncertainty around it. If they were discovered his tomb would become a target. It could be destroyed. If it was he would lose everything that could tell him about his past. But he was in no position to refuse and instead of protest he offered a nod to their leader. It was a sturdy tomb... hard to knock over...

Ross nodded. “I’ll make sure you aren’t interrupted then.” He’d simply try and keep unwanted eyes on realizing why she’d be heading out, not that it was the coven’s business to question her actions too frequently. It didn’t take much convincing to keep the ring’s true nature under wraps; greater vampire lords would slaughter entire covens for the chance at a single daylight ring.
