The morning was cold and tiny flakes of snow spiraled lazily down on the outdoor arena. Ordinarily, it was reserved for the elder dragon slayers who wanted to show off and spar with each other, but at the moment, it was being used for training, or what the young boys decided passed for training. "Hey, look out! Sometimes dragons can attack from behind!" With a wicked grin, the boy planted a solid kick right to the girl's lower back, nearly bringing her to her knees. She let out a sharp gasp of pain but whirled to face him, cheeks red and eyes blazing. Her hands came up to fight back, but the other boy previously in front of her took the opportunity to strike a blow across her shoulders with a wooden sword. The first boy shoved her backwards, making her stumble. She kept her balance, whether by skill or some miracle, and clenched a fist, pulling it back to cast a spell. The boy behind her grabbed her wrist, jerking it behind her back and forcing her to the ground. "Look. You just got eaten. Pathetic." "Selene, you need to try harder," scolded their instructor, a big man with biceps maybe twice the size of Selene's thigh. He gave her the look while she got up, panting and resisting the urge to wince from the new pains in her back and shoulders. The bruises were things she could deal with. That look, the one she got whenever she did something wrong or didn't live up to expectations, was harder to handle. All the fight went out of her and she hung her head, shoulders drooping. "Yes, sir..." The boys, some as many as five years younger than her, smirked as she climbed out of the arena. It was the end of her match, and she wasn't required to stay and watch the others. She knew how it would be, anyway. One on one, fair battles between the other boys, not like the two-on-one training matches she always seemed to face. The instructor said it was because there was an odd number of students, but rather than take turns, he simply threw her to a random pair. The students, since they were already partnered up, didn't take kindly to her intrusion, and they always teamed up on her. She would rather take a walk instead. If she was going to feel left out and alone, she would prefer it on her own terms. She went home to change first, swapping her ill-fitting training tunic for more feminine attire. When she was younger, she had tried wearing masculine clothes to fit in with the boys. They had made fun of her for it, especially when she had begun to fill out in her chest and hips. She knew she was a girl, and she knew she would never properly fit in with the other students, so now she flaunted her femininity whenever possible. It would only serve to prove her point when she became stronger than all of them. Her walks always followed the same path: a slow circuit around the very edges of the village, pausing where she got the best view of the legendary ice castle. She knew about the dragon who lived there. She had heard stories of the slayers who went to bring it down once and for all, though they were usually second-hand because the slayers themselves had never returned. Except for one, who was hailed as a hero for coming back alive, and even claiming to have wounded the dragon. Standing still, her eyes on the intimidating, yet strangely beautiful castle in the distance, she made the same vow she had sworn every day since she could remember. "I am going to slay you," she murmured. "I'm going to bring back your head, and then they'll see that I'm not worthless..."

A twinge went through Selene when she heard the sounds. They sounded so painful, so miserable... She shivered. "...What is that?" she asked, only to herself. Her bow was slung across her back and her sword rested, familiar, against her hip, and she was feeling rather brave that day. And it wasn't like she had much to lose; if anything, she might be able to help someone or something. She set off in search of whatever was making the sound.
As she drew closer to the dragon's lair, she was beginning to lose heart. She wasn't sure she wanted to continue, but she had come so far already... She heard the cry again, and it steeled her against her apprehension. She was closer to the source than she was to the village, and she couldn't turn her back on the creature now. And if it was something the dragon had injured, well, maybe it was time for her to make good on her promise to slay it. Why not now? she thought. Nothing was stopping her. At least, until she saw the freezing body of the dragon slayer. "I'm not ready for this," she breathed, terrified. "I'm going to die here too, aren't I?" But despite her fear, she kept going, getting closer and closer to the sound. Better to die a hero's death than turn back as a coward... The other villagers would never let her live it down. She saw the dragon and froze, stunned by its deadly beauty. It could kill her easily, she knew, and yet it was a strangely graceful creature... and it was in pain, from what she could tell. It hadn't hurt anything that was making the cries; the sound was coming from the dragon itself. Now was her chance. She could strike while it was wounded, and... No. It was in pain... She knew then that she couldn't hurt it, let alone kill it. She shook her head, knowing she was going against everything she was raised for, but she got close to the dragon. "H-hey," she crooned, trying to keep her voice calm and reassuring in case it didn't understand her words. "I'm not here to hurt you..."
