Good evening, Gentlemen.
I have to admit, I am sometimes at a a loss -- not concerning the procedures on a ship, I learned much since I started, especially from the Admiral.
Right at the moment, but it is exemplaric, I have the relatively simple situation that all seems to be done for at least the next few hours concerning my char's immediate tasks, and there is an opportunity to accompany Lt. Shane -- he suggests to go fishing.
I was told, "an officer would just not do this". This I report not for the purpose of nagging. But still, I feel very limited in my choice what to do at all by now. Lt. Shane's player and myself play together a lot in other forums and we never had this problem, which is for me:
I find it extremely difficult to find a brief moment to actually interact with Shane. (Billings I won't mention here as he is not online often.) A little excursion on the isle would help me a great deal to get something for the roleplay in this thread out of it, as I don't even know what attitude my character will evolve towards Shane.
To just go by rule of thumb if in doubt -- as the Admiral suggests in the thread before -- won't do, apparently, as I can see from the comments. Normally I am not somebody who needs to be told every single step, I have a brain that is quite capable of managing some organisational tasks; though I admittedly never unloaded a ship or ordered sailors, I unloaded quite a few trucks in my life and organised productions in my time as sound engineer.
No matter what I ever roleplayed or in which world, I always found it advisable to play a character who is slightly more open-minded than his surroundings. For me there is a huge difference between "an officer won't do this," and "it is neither appropriate for an officer nor common. If you do it, it has implications on how the crew and your fellow officers see you." I am perfectly fine with the latter, I hope not to be court-martialled for going fishing in my spare time. smile
My last comment: As Lt. Shane introduced himself, the reply was something along the lines of "there won't be much need for play onboard." I disagree with that. (That the offer to play was meant in a non-literal meaning concerning a Lieutenant's tasks was obvious I guess.) I take pains to make my rp char a good one, with a background and future plans, which I won't just give away in mental soliloquies staring dreamily at landscapes. I want others to play with me, to make my char laugh, sad, angry, eager, I like to fight, run, work -- if it cannot be avoided, and quite a few other things. Just "playing" by myself is not the same thing, as it is in no field of life.
Excuse my rant, and probably my grammar too; as you might have noticed, I am no native speaker.
