Tony really wished he was better at lying to his friends and loved ones. For some reason, he found some instances easier than others. Even lying to Nate about where he went during patrols was easier than this, for instance. But he supposed that was true because Nate was gone most of the time, they hardly had to explain things to each other.
He wasn't sure. It wasn't a great relationship between father and son, and this whole ordeal put that in perspective. Watcher Kyndall feel so terrible, not knowing where her daughter was, thinking the worst, was difficult for Tony. And he wondered what he would be like in her shoes. He told himself he would be just as terrified, and maybe he would, but he worried that he wouldn't. And that would make him a terrible father.
He hugged her, trying to keep her comforted as she cried again. The poor thing was certainly going to dehydrate herself.
"I'm not keeping anything from you," he said quickly, too quickly, almost before she had even finished accusing him. A sure sign that she was right, at least. He blushed at her, taking a breath and letting her finish before he shook his head again and tried to deliver the line a little more slowly.
"I don't know what's going on, Kyndall. I just know what has happened in this city before, and strange things can be very bad in the end, but they always... I don't know. End. Things go back to the closest kind of normal they can in this place. I'm hoping that Harmony will come home, and that you can be happy again. It kills me to see you so upset, and I want to do what I can to help you. Sometimes I say dumb things, but the only thing I want to do is help you through this. You don't have to trust me if you don't want to, but that won't stop me from trying anyway."

"Never play poker, Tony." she warned softly. With him this adamant she had to give up trying to get whatever it was out of him. She didn't believe him, not by a long shot, but if he was going to keep lying to her she had to believe it was for a good reason. She couldn't believe he'd keep anything from her on purpose that would hurt her in any way. At least, not intentionally. They were friends and she had to trust him so she let the subject drop. But not without a few parting words.
"You're a horrible liar and your face gives you away every time."
More than that she felt tired and put through the emotional ringer. She laid her head on his shoulder again and stared off quietly into space, mulling things over in her mind. She missed Harmony, oh she missed her! Even though the girl, in all likelihood, hated her she wouldn't give it away. She and Harm had their issues but Kyndall had faith they could work them out. It was the same faith that allowed her to believe her daughter was lost and not dead and in that Tony was spectacularly successful. She had a feeling like he knew. He was sure. She had to let his strength of conviction be hers.
Eventually her eyes drooped closed and she fell asleep against him, warm and comforted in his embrace. She pulled his arms tighter around her in sleep, like a blanket, and murmured something wordless. She hadn't slept well since Harm went missing and with her new found peace in comfort she dropped deep into it now, dreamless in a way she'd be profoundly grateful for when she woke up.
