Hopefully this belongs here~

Since this may affect the subject matter, I'm in the US and I'm viewing this from the US drug's standpoint.

Should drugs be against the law? Not only is this logically a massive undertaking since drug lords basically have unlimited funds, but as we all know where there is demand there is supply.

The truth of the matter is that the reason why there is a drug problem is because the general populace demands that there is one. If the general population demands E, Cocaine, Pot, and so on, then there will be those substances.

Alcohol and Cigarettes are equally harmful to an individual, but these are considered legal and "safe" (meaning they're processed and not made by some guy). If illegal substances were legalized then legitimate businesses would be made and not only that but a massive amount of taxed income would flood the world economy.

Now this isn't only a logical problem but a moral one.

We all know that drugs, whether they be prescription, legal, or illegal drugs are readily available. Now, even though these things are obtainable, the reason why they are is, again, because the general populace demands such.

Should these things be against our moral compasses if the use outweighs those who don't?

PERSONALLY I don't do drugs/alcohol/smoke/anything related to that. I still see more reasons for legalization versus against.

What do you guys think?

You have good points, but I see a couple underlying problems. Think about how laws are made, and who is going to support it. If people think something is a bad idea or is immoral they will support laws against that behavior. You yourself admitted that you don't do drugs and I think a lot of people in North America don't. I'm not going to say that people should or shouldn't do drugs, but if the majority just doesn't want it and/or thinks its a bad idea then why would they support it enough to become legal? Alcohol and cigarettes maybe legal albeit regulated, but that's not a very convincing argument for legalizing anything. In essence you might as well be saying that because one harmful behavior is legal (ie cigarettes), why don't we make all harmful behaviors legal as long as we can profit by them? People who have had a family member die because of drug overdose or drug-related crime are going to push to try to stop that thing from happening again and people are going to want to sympathize more with the family who suffered a tragedy than with the group who wants to make money selling drugs legally.

One of your main points was that people want drugs. If people want something enough they will find a way to get it even if other people think it is immoral enough to outlaw. But that could also be why people who use drugs don't rise up and demand legalization: because they still get what they want, legal or not. If they literally could not obtain the object of their desire illegally then they would either have to go without or obtain it legally. But as it stands they can get it from a pusher. So they don't really need to go through the hassle of making it legal. They might just see legalization as a longer and wholly unnecessary path to achieve a goal that they have already achieved.

Keep in mind that I don't really feel strongly one way or another on the subject of drugs or legalization, I'm just trying to point out problems that one might have to overcome if they thought legalization was worth supporting.

Also - cigarettes don't impede your judgement the way drugs do, and neither does alcohol. Yes, exessive consumption of the stuff will make you mad as a hatter (alcohol) - but still no where near as crazy as a bad reaction with drugs. And there are a hellava lot of bad reactions to certain drugs, and those bad reactions are way, way worse than anything alcohol has ever done before.

In any case, another point is that people who've had too much alcohol (whilst not crazy) aren't allowed on our roads. Crazy can still drive normal, or convincing enough to cruise past a cop without them so much as suspecting. Five seconds later they could be in oncoming traffic laughing hysterically, and only split seconds after that they've killed not only themselves, but the young family in the car they've hit. Drugs on our roads are becoming a bigger and bigger problem, they're harder to catch and way more dangerous than the drunks' slow reaction.

Also, once you've legalised something like that there will be a vast majority of people more willing to try it. More people thinking it's okay. More people getting hooked, more people losing their jobs thanks to it, more people getting desperate, maybe using their rent money for the drugs. Then they're evicted, then they're homeless, then they're the filth of the street, still hooked on drugs and extremely desperate. And if all that doesn't happen and they manage to keep a healthy balance, those drugs aren't healthy. There's a reason they're illegal. Long term use often runs into mental disabilities as well as physical. Even if the effects aren't immeadiatly obvious in one human being, it can just as easily become apparent in their offspring. What kind of world would that be leading us too?

Then there are the people who have a 'healthy' balance and overdose. What happens to their friends and family? They rue the day those drugs ever became legal, ever became the norm.
Then there are the people who've been taking the drugs, and NONE of that other stuff happens to them, but they get in a car accident. Only problem is, only medical drug that can possibly help with their survival or recovery would have an EXTREMELY bad reaction with the other drugs, and so they die or live in pain or whatever.

There are too many things that can so easily go desperatly wrong when it comes to drugs. AND THAT is why they're illegal, and that's only one part of the arguement.

I dont personally do them or want to for that matter. I feel that if they are legal then they need to crack down or if they are not then the government needs to crack down either way the system we have now is not a very good one.
