Hope this helps. Its something I made for an RP, and even makes me want to make a summoner. Hope it sparks creativity.
Summoner archive:
The summoner is a mage that uses his arcane in order to summon spirits, or demons, or even call forth the creatures of nature to aid them. The ability to summon comes with a great cost of mana and willpower. The strength of the creature often depends on the summoner’s willpower, or a kind of contract. Contracting can be very dangerous, and should be done carefully.
The Familiar:
A summoner should start with a creature called a Familiar. Which is basically a reflection of his or her soul. The familiar may gradually change shape and color, depending on the user’s alignment shifts, but will always remain the same creature, after it is summoned the first time. A familiar also grows stronger as the summoner does. If a familiar dies, it can be resurrected overnight. But if a summoner dies, the familiar dies with him. Familiars require no contracts, and very little mana to summon, because they are basically an extension of the summoner’s soul. They carry a telepathic relation with the summoner, and also feel the pain that their master feels. Because of these traits, they often become the closest companion a summoner can have.
Beast summoning:
A low level form of summoning that allows the summoner to call forth the aid of a roaming beast or animal. If they get good enough, the could even call forth a titan creature. These creatures are only befriended though, and never taimed. But it is good practice in learning how to work with different creatures, and build up your skills.
Summoning a spirit:
Summoning a spirit can be easy or difficult to do, depending on the spirit. Different spirits look for different things in a summoner. For example, some like to help out a summoner with a strong inner strength or desire. Others may be more inclined to help out a particularly dark soul. Most require a cost of mana to materialize themselves, and can only last for a couple minutes in the physical plane. Spirits aren’t permanent summons, so they almost never require a contract. They can be summoned to fight or defend, to help the wounded recover faster, to decipher ancient scripts, or even offer advise.
The elemental kin:
These are powerful spirits of the ancient earth. They require a contract by life or blood. The Elemental kin often decide the contract, and a condition they need to be summoned. For example one may ask that he would only be summoned when his opponent is of vast power. Or if the character is put in danger. But may require something like “Every time you summon me, I take from your life span.” Or if you’re lucky it will be something like “In the event that you die, I get to eat your body.” They use their own mana to help undergo the summon more easily.
Astral beings:
Summoning astral beings allows you to reach out to extra terrestrial life or spirits. They might come down to lend you aid, or temporarily fuse with the soul of the summoner and grant them their powers. After which, they will give you their name, and a condition to summon them again. Draw backs of fusions may include Mana strain, physical strain, and very sore muscles.
Demons:
The only reasons demons will allow you to summon them is if you will give them of equal value. They won’t fight along side you, but they may give you a powerful weapon. In return they may ask to take from your life, or offer some kind of sacrifice. Some may even wish to brand your soul with their mark, if they ever need a servant in the mortal world.
