The stories I'm working on right now start with these:

"He knew he shouldn't leave the station, but he could not remain in that metallic tube any longer."

and

"Night had fallen by the time the rider crested the hill."

Neither are particularly winsome, but the rest of the paragraphs flesh them a bit.

My favorite first line is and shall always be:

"Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren had destroyed Harold Parker's life."

Versatile Genius

A slight tremble slid up the man's sword arm and quite frankly, it was only fitting.

Meet my shortest living character ever! The story this first line is connected to is still being written. I'm incredibly slow D:

Generous Lunatic

Heres mine (:
"There I was, sitting in a tall tree, spying on my fallen angel once again."
Here are a few of mine:

"Books are like treasure troves of information and imagination."

"Life has an interesting way of screwing you over sometimes."

"Sirens wailed in mechanical anguish and television sets across the entire planet were tuned into the same broadcast, listening intently to the grave news that had been telecast non-stop for three days...Earth was doomed."

biggrin
Here are some of mine:

"Today wasn't the same."

"There is a story I must tell you before my soul slips away with the tides of time."

"August 2, 1990 was the worst day of my life."
Just start the God-damned story is my opinion. I'm often turned off by even mildly showy first lines.
I love starting off with a wicked first sentence... I like people getting hooked so they actually read my story... My novel starts off with this:

"Kill the Angel."
