I’ve known for a long time that the world is full of horrible situations, people, things, and, worst of all, cats.

Fixed! And quite an interesting line.

Fix'd.

I hate commas, they are vile little monsters.
Thanks, sweatdrop .

The comma after the last 'and' is unnecessary. Not wrong, but not having a comma there isn't wrong either. I personally prefer it sans comma because it's too much for me, but it's a matter of preference.

I knew my day was going to be terrible because I fell flat on my face and broke my nose, in front of the one person that is like pure evil and who just laughed and took a picture of me, just to send to everyone she knows.

I don't understand the first eight words. Could you explain it?

Sorry, bold is fixed word. And if it doesn't make sense still, sorry, again. It's the beginning of a rough draft story, so there's no edit on it on yet.
Their romance had been a silly, hormone-induced thing from the very pimply beginning.

I don't think it is a matter of preference, exactly. I would consider "and worst of all, cats" to be grammatically awkward, if not incorrect, because it doesn't necessarily specify that the "cats" are "worst of all," although anybody could infer it. It doesn't really complicate our ability to understand the sentence, but it would still be, technically, wrong. With the two commas, while something of an overload to the sentence, it is obvious that "worst of all" is splicing the phrase "and cats" with an additional comment. They are sort of acting parenthetically, as "and (worst of all) cats." The meaning is the same, but using commas instead of parentheses. Additionally, one could probably get away with saying "and worst of all: cats."

Duh. I know I need to switch them, because old food does.

I need to BUY a grammar book to keep for references. I felt that I had it right but this is just one area where I feel insecure.

The comma, in my confused understanding, has t3 main habitats.
1. Comma goes where you would naturally pause.( The elementary school comma.)
2. The mystical comma that may exist if you want it to, but it's not a rule, but it's the norm. It is such a norm that it's a rule, but that's not the rule.
3. Lists
I'm anti this whole first sentence thing. It's the first paragraph or so for me. Anyway, I'll toss up something I started a few weeks ago as an idea for my next project after me novel.

"The corporate office reeked of greed from every fiber that made the likes of the overstuffed and over furnished chairs to the one of a kind mahogany desk complete with a custom gold nameplate."

I think this might come down to a matter of colloquial writing versus 'proper' writing. But the colloquial is becoming so accepted that it might be morphing into the proper. My rule of thumb is to translate everything into Latin and see if it makes sense, but that really only works if you speak Latin. sweatdrop

edit: Although, I suppose, you could do it without knowing Latin. I just perfected my understanding of grammar in Latin class, and now I can't help but use Latin to figure out precisely how I should separate a sentence. Like, I don't think of it as a 'genitive case', I think of it by the word ending associated with that case. Terrible habit I should really break. Point of that little tangent is, I think of the sentence at its core structure and then anything else should be separated somehow, usually with a comma.
