Level C, Volume One
by Aoi Futaba and Kurenai Mitsuba
Published by Kitty Media
(Originally published in Japan in 1993 by BIBLOS Co.)

User ImageLevel C centers around a relationship between Kazuomi (seme) and Mizuki (uke). Mizuki is a model, Kazuomi is the twin brother of Haruno, the head of a corporation that wants to center their latest promotion around him. Haruno talks Kazuomi into seducing Mizuki and the plot degenerates from there.

Kazuomi runs into Mizuki at a bar and finagles his way into spending the night at Mizuki's apartment. In return for Mizuki's hospitality, Kazuomi promises him "A night of ecstasy that...[he] will never forget."

The characters find that they can make each other feel very good and an affair is started. The little bit of a plot that the series has seems like nothing more than situations to get the characters back into bed.

The art work in Level C is fairly sophomoric. Oh, everything is somewhat in proportion, and it's hell of a lot better than I could do, but there's just something off in the execution. You find yourself staring at the page during one of the many sex scenes, not enjoying the work, but trying to figure out what body part is going where and who's doing what to whom. Very distracting. The characters have limited facial expressions. They're either showing extreme innocence, advanced debauchery or they're screaming in pain/pleasure. The only real saving grace for this book is that the characters have utterly filthy mouths and engage in a lot of smut talk. Something that's rather rare to see in BL manga. No amount of smutty words though, can carry this work past the empty plot and general bad art.

I picked up volume one because I wanted to support the genre being released in North America. After reading the manga, I realized that I can support the genre without supporting crap. I will not be purchasing the rest of the series. I think it's fantastic that they're bringing over graphic BL series for the fans to enjoy, but can't they bring over some more quality work?

Finder Series 1: Target in the Finder
by Ayano Yamane
Published by BeBeautiful
(Originally published in Japan in 2002 by BIBLOS Co.)

User ImageAkihito Takaba (uke) is a freelance photographer who falls into the clutches of one of the leaders of Japan's underworld, Ryuichi Asami (seme). While in Asami's clutches, Takaba is molested five ways to Sunday. Takaba ends up becoming fascinated by Asami and keeps falling into his circle.

Intrigue grows and Takaba ends up getting kidnapped by the mysterious head of a Chinese tong (mafia/secret society) by the name of Fei Long Lui. More molestation for our poor photographer and an unexpected rescue by Asami, who may not be such a bad guy after all.

This book also includes three one shots: "Plants in Bloom," "Love Lesson" and "Risky Society."

Ayano Yamane is known for her art and with good reason. Her characters are beautiful and muscular. The faces are full of expression and the sex scenes are down right filthy. This is definitely not a book for people who are new to the genre.

The main complaint I have with the release is the shoddy way that BeBeautiful designed and released the manga. I have the original Japanese release, complete with dust cover and full-color insert. BeBeautiful left off the dust cover, printed oversized black and white scenes from the manga on the inside cover and left out the full cover insert. Drama Queen and DMP seem to grasp that we enjoy having our manga in a format that's as close to the original as possible, why doesn't BeBeautiful?

Desire
by Maki Kazumi and Yukine Honami
Published by Digital Manga Publishing
(Originally published in Japan in 2001 by Tokuma Shoten Publishing Co.)

User ImageWelcome to high school angst. Toru has a secret crush on his best friend Ryoji. Out of the blue, Ryoji comes up to Toru and tells him that he gets turned on when he looks at him. This sends Toru into a spiral of angst and questioning, trying to see Ryoji's motives in telling him this. Things escalate when Ryoji tells Toru that he wants to sleep with him, just to see what it will be like. Toru accepts and ends up getting his heart broken when he thinks that it means nothing more to Ryoji.

Pile on more angst until the boys figure out what it is they really want.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the tortured artist types. Toru is a member of the school's art club and comes to a large part of his realization by painting. Ryoji is more of a solid, jock-type character. He knows what it is he wants, and he's known it from the beginning, he just doesn't know how to express it.

It's a sticky sweet manga that plucked at my heart strings. Even though it's rated 18+, the smut isn't very graphic. Sweet really is the only word I can come up with to describe this one. The art is nice, the story is nice, DMP does a fantastic job with their presentation. I do so love the dust covers and the oversized books.

It's definitely not a manga for when you're in the mood for some graphic out and out screwing, but it's more of one to curl up with when you feel like angsting with the characters for a little while.

Embracing Love (Haru wo Daiteita)
by Youka Nitta
Published by BeBeautiful
(Originally published in Japan in 1999 by BIBLOS Co.)

User ImageI've got to come clean here, I was a huge Haru fan before there was even the slightest inkling that they might be bringing it over for a North American release. Loved the art, loved the characters, and loved the plot. So if I tend to sound like a bit of a gushing fangirl, you'll have to forgive me.

We've got two AV (adult video) stars. Iwaki and Kato. Both are competing to be at the top of their genre and have developed a sizable rivalry. They are both invited to come and audition for a part in a new movie, which is based on a homosexual relationship. The author and director instructs them to have sex, so that they can judge just how much raw feeling and emotion these two are going to be able to produce.

Eventually, these two end up starring in a TV serialization of the story and begin a relationship of their own. I'm glossing over a lot here, but I'm trying to not give away too many salient plot points. Suffice it to say that it's a rocky relationship at best, but they find that having real emotion and love is much better than showing fake emotion and love on the screen.

I've always been a fan of the next to last chapter in this manga, "Imitation Room." It's filthy and lovely and all kinds of good. Youka Nitta has never shied away from being graphic in her manga. She likes to push the limits of what the censors will allow. For someone who reads a lot of BL manga and is used to seeing the glowing cones of light used for penises and characters who are completely devoid of pubic hair, it's quite a shock to see these characters drawn with pubic hair. It makes the scene just that much more filthy.

Really the only problem I have with this manga is the same problem that I have with every BeBeautiful release. I hate the blown up black and white images on the inside covers. They just look ugly. Once again I want my dust covers and my full color inserts. I know I'm sounding like a broken record here, but maybe if I b***h long enough and hard enough they will get a clue as to what the fans want.

Love Mode, Volume One
by Yuki Shimizu
Published by BLU
(Originally published in Japan in 1996 by BIBLOS Co. Ltd.)

User ImageThis is another series that I'm having a very hard time not fangirling over. Like many fans, I had first gotten hooked on Love Mode through scanlations and was slightly apprehensive as to how they were going to bring this series over for a North American release.

I'm happy to report that it's just as endearing in this release as I found it through the scans. Nice clean translation, nice binding with no ugly printing on the inside covers. The only thing that would have made it better would be if they had included a dust cover.

For those out there who don't already know, Love Mode is a set of stories revolving around a set of couples, loosely connected by a male escort club/service. In volume one, we're introduced to Izumi Sakashita and Takamiya Katsura. A case of mistaken identity throws these two together. Affections grow and by the end of the book they're an established couple.

The art is a little rough in the first book, but does improve over time. The only thing that I really found laughable was the case of the amazing, disappearing c**k that haunted almost all of the sex scenes in this book. That's not anything I can find fault with BLU for, it was that way in the original. I can't wait for volume two to be released. This series just makes me grin like a giddy school girl.

Alone in My King's Harem
by Lily Hoshino
Published by Digital Manga Publishing
(Originally published in Japan in 2004 by BIBLOS Co. Ltd.)

User ImageIt's been said that the characters in BL manga are really just flat-chested women with penises. Never have I seen this cliche more apparent than in this manga. I mean it's pretty enough, and it's well drawn, but the characters (especially the uke characters) are nothing more than girls. Girls who cry when they have sex. Girls who cry when they think that they've lost the affections of their lover. Girls who cry when they have the affections of their lover. It really gets to be quite silly. Top it all off with the characters being drawn very young looking and you've got something that just leaves me feeling a bit empty and a bit creeped out.

This is an collection of one-shot works, rather than a cohesive manga. With the exceptions of the first and the last two stories I found myself skimming through the stories just to see how silly they would get. But I just couldn't get past the fact that the characters looked all of twelve-years-old and they wore more makeup than some J-rockers I could mention.

While it does not inspire the loathing that Level C instills in me, I really wouldn't recommend this manga. It's just silly fluff.

Fake, 1
by Sanami Matoh
Published by Tokyo Pop
(Originally published in Japan in 1994 by BIBLOS Co.)

User ImageMost of us are at least familiar with FAKE. I know the FAKE OAV was my introduction to the wonderful world of BL. It was one of the first videos that we could buy legally that had boys kissing as a salient plot point. The manga was one of the first BL mangas to be brought to North America and helped to prove that there was a viable market for this kind of stuff. It's a sweet, silly manga that I have a giant soft spot in my heart for.

In volume one, we are introduced to most of the main characters, Ryo Maclean and Dee Latyner. Two NYC cops. Ryo is new to the precinct and is assigned to Dee. Dee, being an incurable slacker, is more than pleased to have someone to shove all of his boring paperwork onto. While working on cases they get saddled with Bikky and Carol, two juvenile delinquents, who end up worming their way into Dee and Ryo's lives.

I've heard people complaining about Matoh's art style. In all honesty, I can't see what they're complaining about. Her characters are stylized, but you can always tell what's going on where and the characters have very expressive faces. I guess this is a manga-ka whose art you either love or loathe at first glance.

Tokyo Pop did a pretty good job with this. While we don't have the dust cover and the full color insert, they stayed away from filling the inside cover with pointless crap. They kept in the side story of "Bikky vs. The Bear," which sets up the budding relationship between Bikky and Carol. I'm not the kind of person who bitches about a little het romance in her BL manga. If it's a cute story, I'm all for it.

It's not graphic, there are only three kisses in this volume of the manga, but it's cute and leaves me with a smile. I really can't ask for much more.

Golden Cain
by You Asagiri
Published by BeBeautiful
(Originally published in Japan in 2003 by BIBLOS Co.)

User ImageI did not like Golden Cain the first time I read it and I still don't really like it. It does not inspire the loathing that Level C brings out in me, but there's just something about it that really rubbed me the wrong way.

That being said, Golden Cain has started to grow on me, kind of like a fungus. I find myself re-reading the manga and each time walking away hating it a little less.

The manga centers around Shun (uke) an undergrad student at a prestigious college and Cain (seme) a model who just sweeps himself into Shun's life and sweeps Shun off his feet (literally). Add in a Satanic cult hell bent on screwing Shun into oblivion, a mysterious older brother, Cain's sort of mysterious past and you get a plot that would only be plausible in a BL or shojou manga.

Reading BL manga, you have to kind of expect that the plots are going to be kind of out there and at times pretty silly. You expect this and sometimes even revel in the silliness of the plots. I wasn't doing much reveling reading this. There was a lot more rolling of my eyes and grumbling about manga-ka who like to have their characters be women with penises.

The only saving grace that this manga really has is that the sex scenes are fairly hot, there's a nice dose of smutty talk and the characters are fairly pretty. If I was more fond of the art, I think I would find the characters prettier. Asagiri does not have anything wrong with her style, but it is a different style, and it's not one that I really care for.

I still don't like BeBeautiful's presentation. I want dust covers and full color inserts and for my North American manga to look like the original manga. Maybe I'm asking for too much, because I think I'm going to end up disappointed with every BeBeautiful release that I end up buying.

Kizuna, Volume One
by Kazuma Kodaka
Published by Be Beautiful
(Originally published in Japan in 1992 by BIBLOS Co.)

User ImageKizuna was the first series that I ever ran out and bought in the original Japanese. I had seen the OAVs and fallen in love with it. Even though it took me a while to find the translations, I could amuse myself for hours just looking at the pictures and trying to imagine what the characters were saying. So you can just imagine how excited I was when I heard that they were going to bring Kizuna over for a North American release.

For those of us who aren't familiar with this series, Kizuna is about Kei Enjyoji, b*****d son of a yakuza boss, his lover Ranmaru Samejima, a kendo prodigy. Also appearing are Kai Sagano, son of a yakuza boss, and Masanori (Masa) Araki, second in command of the yakuza clan. So Enjyoji and Ranmaru are together, Kai wants Ranmaru, but at the same time harbors feelings for Masa. Masa is stoic and the perfect yakuza soldier. He never lets on to his true feelings. Still with me? Good. Because this gets even more complicated as the series goes on.

For once we've got characters that are drawn as males (even if they don't always act that way). Kazuma Kodaka's boys are fully muscled and take great pride in being stronger than the average bear. The smut is lovely and graphic and, to top everything off, Kazuma Kodaka is not afraid to add silly bits into her stories.

I could go on and complain about the lack of the dust cover, or the full cover insert, and b***h once again about the ugly black and white, oversized graphics printed on the inside of each cover, but I'll spare you all of that. My main complaint is the fact that they left out two pages of the manga. The last story in the book is about how Kai started to develop feelings for Masa. It has a very young, kindergarten-aged Kai, giving Masa a peck on the lips as a thank you.

Now keep in mind that I really dislike shota. I really find shota distasteful, yet I found that peck to be very sweet, and a very nice way to set up the relationship that an older Kai wants to have with Masa. I understand wanting to keep anything with underage kids out of the manga in the conservative society we're living in, but come on. There wasn't anything sexual about this kiss. It really should have been left in.

Kizuna's just a fun read. Let yourself enjoy the over-dramatic plot twists and the over-emotional characters. It's part of what makes this genre so great, and makes this series one of the stars of the genre.

Rising Storm
by Yuzuha Ougi
Published by Drama Queen
(Originally published in Japan in 2003 by Kaiohsha Publishing Co., Ltd.)

User ImageRising Storm is an early work from the manga-ka who brought us Brother. While it is fairly evident that this is an early work, and that most of the stories are excuses to show pretty boys screwing madly, it's still fairly enjoyable.

First off we've got the short story collection that gives the book it's title. Rising Storm is about a young black belt who ends up working for a wealthy recluse for the summer. A chance meeting leads to exaggerated clumsiness and lots of screwing madly.

A Yokohama Story revolves around a dentist who has never felt passion and the young waiter who's teeth he becomes obsessed with checking for cleanliness. The dentist story is very cute. I think it's my favorite in this collection. I'm a sucker for the cold, unfeeling guys who lose it when they get exposed to sex.

Killing Me Tenderly was the only short story that really felt off to me. The violence in the story didn't seem to mesh well with the light-hearted fare that was found in the rest of the book. I'm sure that it will appeal to some people, but it really wasn't my cup of tea.

I don't know how Drama Queen managed to do it, but they managed to get the original, uncensored version of this book. No glowing cones of light, no white strips blocking out the important bits, these are full blown erections, drawn in all their glory. It's fun and it's filthy. It may not have the in-depth plot that some of my other favorites, but it's a fun read. Really, that's all I'm looking for with my manga.

Way to go, Drama Queen. We've got a book that's well-translated, has a dust cover and the full color insert. They kept all the honorifics in, as well as the cultural references. I'm looking forward to seeing what else this company will be bringing over for us.

Yami no Matsuei isn't BL, it's Shoujo. There's no definitive BL elements in it. Yes, there's some sexuality, but it's rape in every case. There's no physical relationship with any of the male leads. It's easy to mistake Yami for BL ; ; I wish it was BL, but it's not.

That is if BeBeautiful comes through. They've already delayed the releases of these titles twice. Forgive me for being cynical - but I don't have much hope for them getting a release any time soon.

I also heard on the DMP forum (where I'm a mod) that the release for Yellow has been pushed back.
