EDIT: Thanks a bajillion for the staff listing! While it's obviously not quite as good as a staff blog, it's a huge step in the right direction. I'm glad you've made my little list redundant smile I hope to see more steps in the direction of better public relations from Gaia in the future.

We all know Gaia has some issues in communication with its users. Too often people are left in the dark unless they know what forums to visit or what devs and artists post information in their personal journals. These things aren't put in announcements and are often put in a newsletter too late or not at all.

Semi-solution? Gaia staff blog!

Plenty of businesses, particularly ones based around a website or with a large web following, have blogs that people have the option of subscribing to via RSS if they want to receive updates on what's happening and random points of interest. From what I can see there's a few benefits of Gaia having a blog that its staff members can post to:

  • Users who want to know more about the site than provided in announcements can subscribe to a single place to get that information rather than poking around dev's journals
  • Glitch fixes and things like 'hey, we got your feedback on X feature and are working on improving it!' can be posted without annoying the entire site with constant announcement updates
  • Users can have greater insight into decisions - juno's explanations of item releases for example, or the reason that some parts of the site are region specific
  • Users can have greater appreciation for the fact that there are real people behind Gaia and get to know them a little better biggrin
  • Place to put all those con photos I know someone on staff must have...

It could be used mainly for things not important enough to warrant an announcement but should be talked about for people who want to know. If it falls somewhere in between they could be talked about in detail in the blog and linked from the newsletter for those who want that extra detail.

I know it's difficult to keep a blog up to date (believe me...), but I know of quite a few staff members who regularly post this kind of information in the Gaia journals and forum posts anyway - so it shouldn't really be much extra effort after the initial setup. And I think communication is something important and worthy of some time and money investment, and definitely something Gaia could be paying more attention to. This would be a fantastic first step in keeping us all informed.

Chisa, this is a great idea. We've actually wanted to make something like this for quite some time now, such as implementing a forum where Gaia staff are free to create their own individual threads and post to it with new updates like how Lanzer does in his thread in Q&A. For whatever reason, the project never took flight; maybe it was because no one had the bandwidth to drive it at the time. sweatdrop I can suggest it again to the appropriate staff for this and see if we can look at the project again. Thanks.
Thread was seen by the appropriate peoples, mission accomplished xd I hope it gets taken further from here!

If any other staff members see this thread I'd be particularly interested in your feedback on the idea.

For those who can't wait, Riddle-Me-This has kindly posted a bunch of links to staff members who regularly post in their journal and in the forums whee I'll also be compiling a comprehensive listing eventually; for the moment it's under construction in my journal. This has been made redundant by the new official staff listing. Yay!

D: That would be wonderful. <3
Quality idea Chisa! It would help out a lot in here too.

Too often someone asks something that was already stated by a dev or mod, however the user is not to blame as it can be pretty complicated knowing who does what and says what.

I like the fact that it would all be in one place. Maybe it could be done in a way that all the staff has to do is post it in their journals, then mark off a box stating that it is staff-blog material, so it's directly linked up to the staff blog without any extra hassle on the staff's part (As if you guys aren't busy enough).

gaia should really do this. as things are now, you have to hunt for the info you want... this is how a lot of stupid rumors spread. we need one place to get good info right from the staff.

Sounds like a good idea - wouldn't want it to be too much of an inconvenience ^_^

It must have an RSS feed though mad The Gaia staff blog I'm imagining would have multiple author and feed abilities, so it might have to run off a different system than Gaia journals. Wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing though.

As long as it's optional and not mandatory, it doesn't sound like a bad idea to me. I've seen similar concepts proposed involving a mandatory staff checkin every day or so which seemed like they'd be more of a pain than anything else.

sweatdrop I worry about the potential for whatever admin/dev posts an unpopular change to be a scapegoat for it. So I'd hope they'd have the option to post it anonymously if they so chose.

blaugh I know what you mean, wouldn't be a bad idea. So long as things don't start coming from Rina, I'm content xd

And yeah Chisa, RSS feed would be of super helpful. This would also probably tide over the users whining about the advertisement announcements.

I wouldn't want it to be mandatory, would take the fun out of it and lower the quality of posts, I think sad

And yeah, that would be an issue and would make others not want to post to it... I don't think posting things every now and then as Anonymous or Admin would make it any less of a useful resource - so long as there's some from identified people to give everything a human face, if that makes sense sweatdrop

I have a feeling the ad quests would still be in announcements if there was a blog - Gaia and the sponsor both benefit more if it's announced where everyone has no choice but to see it sweatdrop

EDIT: Going to sleep, will continue discussion in the morning >_>

Oh I know that, what I meant was that those who are wishing that announcements had more update, content-like stuff in it would have a new source to be giddy about.

I don't see any reason to change the announcements, they serve their purpose well whee

Im no moderator, but hey. If its going to improve the moderating system/Benifit it, then why not try it. Excellent idea Chisa!
I'm assuming that is the purpose of Lanzer's sticky in Q&A? ^^

Great idea. Actually I like the idea. Then again, they could just do a link list to the Journals of the admins and devs.

More or less, but a blog of some sort that any and all staff can post to would be bigger and better.
Plus, Lanzer's diary doesn't get updated quite as often as we all would like. sweatdrop
