_____We are here today to attract badly needed attention to the disease known as Cancer. Cancer is one of the most devastating diseases, and has cut down several lives whether before their time, or too soon to make peace. This is not just to recognize the death of Vo's father, or for any other one person. This is for everyone who has ever felt the effects of this disease. Fathers, Mothers, Brothers, Sisters, everyone. It should not be because of one close cancer experience that you decide to take action, you should do it for all of man, out of the goodness of your heart.

Cancer Facts (taken from Facts You Need to Know About Cancer)
  • One in three people will contract cancer, and one in four will die from the disease.
  • Within five years, cancer will surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death, according to the American Hospital Association.
  • In 1994, 1.2 million new cancer cases were added to the more than eight million people in the U.S. who have already been diagnosed with cancer.
  • Since 1950, the overall cancer incidence has increased by 44 percent; the incidence of breast cancer and male colon cancer by about 60 percent; testis, prostate and kidney by 100 percent; and other cancers, such as malignant melanoma, multiple myeloma and some lymphomas, by over 100 percent.
  • The estimated annual cost of cancer to the United States, excluding incalculable psychosocial costs, is $110 billion, approximately 2 percent of the GNP.
  • An estimated 80 million people have health insurance insufficient to cover the costs of a catastrophic illness such as cancer.
  • Annual production rates for synthetic, carcinogenic and other industrial chemicals exploded from 1 billion pounds in 1940 to more than 500 billion pounds annually during the 1980s.
  • Recent National Cancer Institute studies have linked: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and exposure to solvents, oils, and greases; elevated risks for multiple myelorna among men and women employed in the textile and plastic industries; lymphoma among laboratory workers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and lung cancer among workers who developed silicosis.
  • The rates of certain types of cancer among some industrial workers are up to 10 times higher than in the general population. Children of workers handling chemical carcinogens have sharply increase cancer rates. For example, the risks of childhood leukemia are increased two-to-five-fold if, during their mother's pregnancies, their fathers worked with spray paints, dyes or pigments.
  • Some 75 percent of all cancers develop in those over 55, but notable exceptions include childhood leukemia, testicular and brain cancers - which mainly strike young people and have been increasing at an alarming rate, particularly among peak age groups For example, there has been an approximate 300 percent increase in testicular cancer among those aged 25-34 since the 1950s.
  • During the 1990s, nearly 2 million women will have been diagnosed with breast cancer and 460,000 will have died. Between 1950 and 1989, the incidence of breast cancer increased by 53 percent.
  • There has been an approximate doubling in. lung cancer rates in recent decades among non- smokers. A wide range of occupational exposures and urban air pollution have been shown to cause lung cancer.
*In the time it took you to read this fact sheet, another two Americans have died of cancer.

_____This is a harsh reality that we have to face every single day, that sometimes no matter how healthy you are, or someone you loves is, it can be taken away in a matter of minutes between the examination and the diagnosis. Some people are strong enough and lucky enough to become survivors, but then others cannot afford medical care, or simply are unable to fight. These people become martyrs to one of the many causes that need to be cured. Whether they lived or died, they are our heroes. There is hope as we've seen several times. Sometimes it's not cancer, sometimes we catch it early enough, sometimes we survive. However, we need to make an effort to help those who didn't catch it early on, who may not survive, and we must pull together to fight this disease and find a cure to end the continuation of so many unnecessary deaths.

_____Welcome to the Vale of Earth Auction post. This is a very special custom auction for a Specimen done by bluessence. This Vale is a 100% custom option that will begin at either child or teen (whatever your choice is). However, there are certain bonus' you can gain if you modify your custom slightly. If you choose the male gender or based upon the Daffodil (otherwise known as the Narcissus), you will be given a custom familiar. If you choose both, you will be automatically granted the very rare Heaven alignment. You will also receive the un-watermarked full-version of each artwork at appropriate growth, you will not receive the print version (if there is one), all profits from the print will be donated to the Cancer Society of the artist's choice.

Taken from Daffodil Origins, Lore, and Traditions

The daffodil is a symbol of rebirth - a sign of the new beginnings that come with spring. Daffodils are often found connected with Easter and Easter religious services because of their new birth significance. The daffodil is the American/Canadian Cancer Society's symbol of new life and hope that a cure for cancer will be found. "You see a daffodil and know there's hope," says Debbie Jaramillo, volunteer chair, California Division Daffodil Days. "And with hope, there's a cure. They're a burst of sunshine, a ray of hope. Even if it is still cold outside, you know there's warmth and light ahead."

According to a Greek myth, a young wood nymph named Echo fell in love with a young man named Narcissus. He was bestowed with great beauty, by the gods. He was given the gift of eternal youth and beauty, provided he did not look at his own reflection. Self-absorbed, he spurned the affections of Echo, who was consumed by love, until all that was left of her was her voice. Because of this sad affair, the daffodil signifies unrequited love. Nemesis, the goddess of retribution and vengeance, led the vain Narcissus to a shimmering mountain lake that mirrored his face. There, at the water's edge , he fell in love with his image and was transfixed, caught in the spell of his beauty. Every time he tried to touch the image it disappeared in the ripples of water, so instead he simply sat at the water's edge and stared sadly at the reflection. The "drooping" of the daffodil symbolizes Narcissus admiring himself. The Gods thought that Narcissus would die of hunger if he remained there any longer so they turned him into a scented flower which, to this day blossoms in the mountains in spring and which is still called Narcissus. Thus, the daffodil symbolizes unrequited love, vanity and excessive self-love. The center of the daffodil cup is said to contain the tears of Narcissus.

Taken from What is Cancer?

Cancer develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are many kinds of cancer, they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells.

Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person's life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the person becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and to repair injuries.

Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of dying, they outlive normal cells and continue to form new abnormal cells.

Cancer cells develop because of damage to DNA. This substance is in every cell and directs all activities. Most of the time when DNA becomes damaged the body is able to repair it. In cancer cells, the damaged DNA is not repaired. People can inherit damaged DNA, which accounts for inherited cancers. More often, though, a person's DNA becomes damaged by exposure to something in the environment, like smoking.

Cancer usually forms as a tumor. Some cancers, like leukemia, do not form tumors. Instead, these cancer cells involve the blood and blood-forming organs and circulate through other tissues where they grow.

Often, cancer cells travel to other parts of the body where they begin to grow and replace normal tissue. This process is called metastasis. Regardless of where a cancer may spread, however, it is always named for the place it began. For instance, breast cancer that spreads to the liver is still called breast cancer, not liver cancer.

Not all tumors are cancerous. Benign (noncancerous) tumors do not spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body and, with very rare exceptions, are not life threatening.

Different types of cancer can behave very differently. For example, lung cancer and breast cancer are very different diseases. They grow at different rates and respond to different treatments. That is why people with cancer need treatment that is aimed at their particular kind of cancer.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Half of all men and one third of all women in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetimes. Today, millions of people are living with cancer or have had cancer. The risk of developing most types of cancer can be reduced by changes in a person's lifestyle, for example, by quitting smoking and eating a better diet. The sooner a cancer is found and treatment begins, the better are the chances for living for many years.

Taken from Tips To Help You and Your Loved Ones Deal With Cancer

For every person in the world who suffers from the devastating effects of cancer there is a loved one who is also suffering. Every day can be difficult. Oftentimes it can be a lonely and depressing period for the patient and the caregiver as well.

Below are five steps developed by the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) to help you assist a loved one with cancer:

1. Be open with your fears and anxieties about the disease — It is common the patient and the caregiver are frightened by a cancer diagnosis. That is why it is important both of you sit down and discuss your fears and concerns up front. By being honest, you will be able to support each other as the treatment progresses.

2. Assist in treatment decisions — It is important the supporting caregiver and the patient face the difficult decisions about diagnosis and treatment together. If possible, both should attend the meetings with the doctor where treatment decisions will be discussed. It may help to decrease your anxieties about the treatments and help you both understand any side effects.

3. Provide a comfortable environment for the cancer patient — By paying attention to the details of comfort for your loved one, you will help them have to deal with one less item on their emotional plate.

4. Maintain a balance for yourself — It is important you and the person you care for continue to take time for the usual day-to-day activities. This will help you feel less overwhelmed and keep a healthy life balance.

5. Don't be afraid to seek the support of others — People don't need to face cancer by themselves. Seek the support of other family members and friends, other cancer patients, religious help, cancer support groups, doctors, and mental health professionals.

"By following these steps and facing cancer together it can strengthen everything that is good in a relationship," said Franklin Salisbury, president of NFCR. "Providing a supportive environment helps the patient's and family's ability to deal with the crisis, promotes mutual support and helps to sustain relationships."

Taken from Causes and Cancer

Cancer has many causes
There are about 200 different types of cancer affecting all the different body tissues. What affects one body tissue may not affect another. For example, tobacco smoke that you breathe in may help to cause lung cancer. Over exposing your skin to the sun could give you a melanoma on your leg. But the sun won't give you lung cancer and smoking won't give you melanoma.

Apart from infectious diseases, most illnesses are 'multifactorial'. Cancer is no exception. Multifactorial means that there are many factors involved. In other words, there is no single cause for any one type of cancer.

Carcinogens
A 'carcinogen' is something that can help to cause cancer. Tobacco smoke is a powerful carcinogen. But not everyone who smokes gets lung cancer. So there must be other factors at work.

Age
Most types of cancer become more common as we get older. This is because the changes that cause a cell to become cancerous in the first place take a long time to develop. There have to be a number of changes to the genes within a cell before it turns into a cancer cell. The changes can happen by accident when the cell is dividing. Or they can happen because the cell has been damaged by carcinogens and the damage is then passed on to future 'daughter' cells when that cell divides. The longer we live, the more time there is for us to accumulate these genetic mistakes in our cells.

Genetic make up
There have to be a number of genetic mutations within a cell before it becomes cancerous. Sometimes we are born with one of these mutations already. This does not mean we will get cancer. But with one mutation from the outset, it makes it more likely statistically that we will. Doctors call this 'genetic predisposition'.

The BRCA1 and BRCA2 breast cancer genes are examples of genetic predisposition. Women who carry one of these faulty genes have a higher chance of developing breast cancer than women who do not.

The BRCA genes are good examples for another reason. Most women with breast cancer do not have a mutated BRCA1 or BRCA 2 gene. Less than 5% of all breast cancer is due to these genes. So although women with one of these genes are individually more likely to get breast cancer, most breast cancer is not caused by a high risk inherited gene fault.

This is true of other common cancers where some people have a genetic predisposition, for example colon (large bowel) cancer.

Researchers are looking at the genes of people with cancer in a study called SEARCH. They also hope to find out more about how other factors might interact with genes to increase the risk of cancer. Information about this study is on our clinical trials database. Either follow the link or click on the blue button to the left of any CancerHelp UK screen. Then type SEARCH into the Free Text Search box. Please note that you cannot volunteer for this study.

The immune system
People who have problems with their immune systems are more likely to get some forms of cancer. This group includes people who:
  • Have had organ transplants and take drugs to suppress their immune systems to stop organ rejection
  • Have AIDS
  • Are born with rare medical syndromes which affect their immunity
The kinds of extra cancers that affect these groups of people fall into two, overlapping groups:
  • Cancers that are caused by viruses, such as cervical cancer or some lymphomas
  • Lymphomas
Chronic infections or transplanted organs can continually stimulate cells to divide. This continual cell division means that immune cells are more likely to acquire mutations and develop into lymphomas.

Diet
Cancer experts estimate that changes to our diet could prevent about one in three cancer deaths in the UK. In the western world, many of us eat too many animal fats and not enough fresh fruit and vegetables. This type of diet is known to increase your risk of cancer. But how exactly we should alter our diets is not clear. There is more about this in the page on diet causing cancer.

Sometimes foods or food additives are blamed for directly causing cancer and described as 'carcinogenic'. This is often a distortion of the truth. Sometimes a food is found to contain a substance that can cause cancer but in such small amounts that we could never eat enough of it to do any harm. And some additives may actually protect us. There is more about food additives in the page on diet causing cancer.

Day to day environment
By this we mean what is around you each day that may help to cause cancer. This could include:
  • Tobacco smoke
  • The sun
  • Natural and man made radiation
  • Work place hazards
  • Asbestos
Some of these are avoidable and some aren't. Most are only contributing factors to causing cancers - part of the jigsaw puzzle that scientists are still trying to put together. There is more about this in the page on causes of cancer in the environment .

Viruses
Viruses can help to cause some cancers. But this does not mean that these cancers can be caught like an infection. What happens is that the virus can cause genetic changes in cells that make them more likely to become cancerous.

These cancers and viruses are linked:
  • Cervical cancer and the genital wart virus, HPV
  • Primary liver cancer and the Hepatitis B virus
  • T cell leukaemia in adults and the Human T cell leukaemia virus
There will be people with primary liver cancer and with T cell leukaemia who haven't had the related virus. But infection may increase their risk of getting that particular cancer. With cervical cancer, scientists now believe that everyone with an invasive cervical cancer will have had an HPV infection beforehand.

Many people can be infected with a cancer-causing virus, and never get cancer. The virus only causes cancer in certain situations. Many women get a high risk HPV infection, but never develop cervical cancer. Another example is Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). These are some facts about this common virus:
  • Most people are infected with EBV
  • People who catch it late get glandular fever but this does not cause cancer
  • In sub-Saharan Africa, EBV infection and repeated attacks of malaria together cause a cancer called Burkitt's lymphoma that affects children
  • In China, EBV infection (together with other unknown factors) causes naso-pharyngeal cancer
  • In AIDs patients and transplant patients EBV can cause lymphoma
  • In the UK, about 4 out of 10 cases of Hodgkin's disease seem to be related to EBV infection
Protective and risk factor foods
It is thought that these foods are protective against cancer:
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Fibre
  • Vitamins A, C, E and D
  • Certain types of oils found in fish
And these foods are risk factors for cancer:
  • Fats (especially animal fats)
  • Red and processed meats
  • Alcohol
But it's a complicated picture. It does not seem to be enough to take vitamin supplements for example. There is something about eating fresh vitamin rich foods that is protective.

An international research study is going on at the moment across Europe to try to answer more questions about diet and cancer. The study, called EPIC, involves 500,000 people in 10 countries. EPIC stands for European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. The researchers are looking into the food intake of those taking part over many years. They are also monitoring these people's health records and recording who gets cancer and who doesn't. Then they may be able to link certain factors in the diet with the risk of getting particular cancers. It is the largest study into diet and cancer ever conducted.

The results of EPIC could have huge implications for the prevention of cancer. To start with, the researchers are looking into common cancers such as breast, lung, colorectal, prostate and stomach cancer. But the size of this study means that researchers will also be able to look into the possible role of diet in rarer cancers. The results of the study will have implications for cancer prevention everywhere. The results will be presented at international conferences and published in journals available to researchers and health officials throughout the world.

Food additives and cancer
There are many different substances added to commercially prepared foods. But these are not all bad. Some additives stop food from going off and so can help to keep us healthy. A good example of this is a toxin called aflatoxin that comes from a mould. It grows on stored food in hot and humid countries, especially on peanuts. This is known to help cause liver cancer so anything that stops the mould from getting into the nuts is helping to prevent cancer.

Most additives are not thought to affect cancer risk. Colours, flavours and sweeteners are constantly investigated by researchers and if any are thought to be a real risk, they may be withdrawn. Sometimes there is a scare about a particular additive. Some years ago saccharin was claimed to be a carcinogen.

Researchers had found that when it was fed to rats in huge quantities, the rates of cancer in the rats increased. We are very unlikely to eat so much saccharin and so it is unlikely to cause cancer in people, but far fewer foods contain it now than did a few years ago.

Other additives can be a cancer risk. Pickled foods may increase risk of cancer of the stomach and oesophagus (gullet), particularly if they are very salty. This may explain why there are such high rates of stomach and oesophageal cancer in Japan, where salty, pickled foods are popular.

Contaminants
This means chemicals in foods or drinks that are not meant to be there. They could form as a by-product of the manufacturing process, for example.

Nitrosamines are chemicals found in cured meats (bacon and ham, for example) and beer. Nitrosamines have been shown to be carcinogenic so the amount in foods has been cut as much as possible. In brewing, one cause of nitrosamines is a reaction between pollution in the atmosphere and the malted barley that is one of the main ingredients of the beer. The brewing industry has tried to cut the levels of nitrosamines in beer as much as possible. Levels are now much lower than they used to be, but it hasn't been possible to get rid of them completely.

Smoking and barbecueing foods so that they are slightly burnt on the outside causes chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to form. These chemicals are known to help cause cancer. So in theory barbecueing or cooking over a high heat could increase the cancer risk of meat and fish. But few research studies have shown this.

Frying and baking meat at high temperatures can create chemicals called heterocyclic amines. These may increase risk of cancer of the bowel or gullet (oesophagus). Acrylamide, another chemical that may cause cancer, has been found in foods such as crisps and chips. But there isn't proof yet that these chemicals cause cancer in humans and so there are no grounds for telling people to change cooking or eating habits because of these chemicals. (You should, of course, change your eating habits to include more fruit and veg!)

Obesity and cancer
'Obese' means more than about 25% overweight. It is measured by comparing your weight with your height. There is information about how to work out the right weight for you in CancerHelp UK. Obesity can increase your risk of:
  • Breast or uterine (womb) cancer if you are a woman
  • Colon (bowel), oesophageal, kidney and gallbladder cancer
Researchers are not sure how much the risks increase, or exactly why. Breast cancer is hormone linked. Its development is affected by amounts of the sex hormones oestrogen and testosterone. Fatty tissue produces an enzyme called 'aromatase'. Aromatase affects the balance between these hormones and this may explain why being obese affects your risk of breast cancer. Although obesity increases breast cancer risk if you are postmenopausal, it lowers breast cancer risk if you are premenopausal. But risk of breast cancer increases strongly with age, and being obese increases the risk of several cancers as well as other diseases. So it is important to maintain a healthy body weight throughout your life.

Obese people may have increased risk of bowel cancer because they tend to have higher blood sugar levels. This is because they are resistant to insulin.

A healthy diet
The diet thought to help reduce cancer risk is much the same as that recommended for a healthy heart. So you really can make a difference to your health if you:
  • Eat less meat and animal fats (butter, cream, cheese)
  • Eat five portions of raw or lightly cooked fruit and vegetables every day (5 portions is about 400g or 1lb in weight)
  • Eat more fibre
  • Eat more oily fish (eg salmon, trout, mackerel)
  • Eat less salt, salty foods, sugar and sugary foods
  • Eat more cereals, bread, pasta and rice
  • Don't fry foods and if you use fats in cooking, choose vegetable oils or olive oil not lard or butter
  • Drink less alcohol

_____My father was diagnosed with an advanced stage of Melanoma, and when I found out I remember my heart dropping into my stomach and disappearing. I knew that generally, skin cancer was not as high a risk as others, but it still shook me to my core. To me, my father had always been untouchable, he was an idol to me. Over life he'd made enemies and friends, but over all he was always my father. This was the first time I truly had to face my father's mortality, and coupled with finding out he had hemochromatosis, I was a mental mess. After a certain point our relationship deteriorated, and my father and I stabbed at each other with passive aggressive blows. I know that we both made each other cry.
_____He had always taken such precautions, and remembering back I can now recall odd splotches on his skin that I'd always disregarded. It sometimes goes to show that no matter how careful you are, you can still contract cancer. He began to undergo painful surgery to remove and repair the growing batches of skin. Before the bandages were no bigger than quarters, but they've grown over the years. When I am with him, I have to put on a brave face and try not to cry when I dress his bandages for him. I admire my little sister because she lives with him full-time, and she has to do it every day. At this point I've made peace with the fact that I am no longer, "Daddy's Little Girl", and she has taken my place. My father has to go through so much pain, and even still he protects my sister and I from it, and I take that as a sign of how much he truly loves us. He is still alive, though it seems to spread every day. If he dies, I don't know what I'd be able to do with myself. No matter what we've been through, he'll always be my daddy.
_____During the beginning of 2007, my Uncle died of Spine Cancer. He woke up one day feeling odd, went to the hospital where he was diagnosed. Unfortunately it was too far along, and it spread so rapidly that he died that day. It was so sudden and it wracked my soul when I found out. I do take comfort in the fact that he lived his last months helping the Hawaiian people to the fullest, instead of worrying about last regrets. He went so fast, I believe his friends and family believe that his soul couldn't wait to shed its mortal coil and continue to the blissful arms of heaven.
_____I am doing this event not for the Vale, or for myself, but to promote awareness and understanding to us all. We shouldn't have to've gone through a personal experience to want to give our all, we should act out of the kindness of humanity instead. I hope that this message spreads and even if you haven't felt the pain, you will want to help find the cure with all your heart.

Lady Nozomi (Vale's Breast Cancer Event)
_____When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer... everything changed. I remember her crying a lot, and thanking god she wasnt throwing up from chemotherapy treatment. The hardest thing for her was shaving her head though, but she felt she had to because her hair was falling out so much that it looked and felt bad. There were some really shaky times when we werent sure how we were going to make ends meet monitary wise, because the doctors bills were really expensive, and my mom couldnt work as much because she was sick so often. The doctors told us 6 months ago that they would never used the word 'cured' to describe her case, but now its present day and there isnt any sign of cancer in her system. However, it still affects us because she contracted lymphedema as a sign affect of treatment (its where fluid backs up in her arm, and swells it painfully). She's still having a hard time with it, and were still getting through everything, but its good to know that she's alright for now. (My mother is a two year survivor)

PrincessEv (Vale's Breast Cancer Event)
_____I remember when my grandmother got breast cancer. We have a rather large family, and we were all shocked when we heard the news...probably because she was the strongest of all of us. It's funny how sometimes even healthy people get it. Anyway, there were several times we didn't think she'd make it. Also in the process of either chemo or radiation treatment, she became burned badly by it. However, my grandma never gave up hope, and was always strong. She worked while she had breast cancer, probably to try and keep her mind off of it. I'm happy to say it's been almost five years since she got it.
_____Today she is still healthy, and now even stronger than before (I think so, atleast). She's slowly gaining all of her weight back, and her hair has also come back in (has for a few years now). It seems like through all of that pain though, it kept us closer together. Our family has had arguments in the past few years, but I think this year we are really appriciating what we all have. That makes me extreamly happy. I thank god a lot for letting us keep her awhile longer, though I probably should thank him more often than I do. I also hope that none of us in the family get it, and that she stays cancer-free...because grandma said if it came back she wouldn't do the chemotherapy and radation treatment(s) again. It changes everything--in your life and others.
