Welcome to Stringed Soul - An ABJD OC and Avi Art Request thread. I realize my requests are a little odd, and I might use some terminology that not many people are familliar with, but I encourage people to post and ask questions, even if they aren't offering art. I don't bite much. wink And I adore talking about BJDs, so feel free to come in and ramble about anything at all. Chatting and bumping is VERY welcome. ^^

Everyone's favourite section! These are the things that are going to keep me from yelling, and not yelling is always good. So pay extra close attention to this part, and the F.A.Q's, so everyone remains happy.

I am god in this thread. I'm not saying that you have to bow and scrape to me - I'm saying that if I ask you to leave, leave. If I ask you to calm down, calm the hell down. Follow my instructions and the instructions of my friends (if they're an FYA member, they're my friends, so ask if in doubt.) Everyone gets two warnings, then they're banned and/or reported. The only things that don't get warnings is advertising anything without asking, posting when banned, and posting explicit material.
If you're banned from any FYA threads/events, consider yourself banned here, too.
Do not just link me to your DA account or your art auction and tell me to PM you. I have no interest in bidding for art - I want a clean sale. Don't be lazy - actually post your samples. Linking to zoomed in art pages on DA is fine, though. ^^
I don't have to buy your artwork! There are many reasons why I might not be interested - not the right style, too expensive, what have you. Do not get snippy if I choose not to buy from you.
Don't be offended if I don't choose to buy from you! It doesn't mean I don't like your work. Some of my favourite artists, I wouldn't want to draw these characters. It just wouldn't suit them.
DO NOT start any work on commissions for me without confirming the deal! You cannot draw me a picture without consent then demand payment. That's like being a squeegie kid.
BE POLITE. I'll have NO drama or unnecessary rudeness here. Just because some people are swearing at each other in a friendly manner doesn't mean you can join in. No making out with people, either. >_< Look at it this way. Pretend you're in a crowded grocery store with a parent of yours. Would you do what you're about to do there? If the answer is no, then don't do it here.
Please try to speak proper english. I understand that english is not everyone's first language, and if you have difficulties with it, just let me know, and I might be able to switch languages to help you out. But NO netspeak. Everyone else is making the effort to be clear and concise, you should be, too. (Typos and honest mistakes are completely understandable, though.)
Don't even think about stealing any art here. You'll be reported and banned from all my threads so fast your theiving head will spin.
That goes double for my OCs. It's inevitable that some OCs might share the same names, or even style, whatever. But if I find someone making a comic/novel/photostory about a group of characters/dolls that are my characters, I'll report you.
Don't PM me unless I've specifically said you could.

How did you get into BJDs?
A friend of mine showed me some incrediby beautiful dolls in someone's LiveJournal, and I was intrigued, so I did some research on them. Against my will, I was hooked, as soon as I realized it's like a physical Gaia avatar you can dress up and play will. And like your own personal jrocker. xd

How long have you been into BJDs?
Since December '04.

But banking on that you DO know what you're talking about, we can talk about it and see. I don't like selling/trading art as I feel that my art doesn't translate well into digital media. Not a question, but I'll answer anyways! If you have an experimental style, or something that you want to try out, talk it over with me! I'll probably be open to it. ^^

I really like your characters/avi and would like to draw for you, even though I'm not very good. Do you accept freebies?
YES. I accept free art. And I ALWAYS tip freebie artists. It might not be much... usually anywhere from 100g-1k+ depending on the complexity of your piece and how long I think it took you. If you're realistic enough to know that your art might not be the quality or caliber I'm looking for, then I hope you'd not expect the hugest of tips. If your art normally sells for 10k+ and you're doing a piece for me for free, expect a larger tip. I really doubt my tips will EVER go over 5k, though, and that'd be for VERY excellent art. Like, Linzb0t. quality art. (<3 you, Linz!)

HOWEVER! Don't take advantage of my generosity by doing art I'd normally turn down, submitting it as a freebie and getting a tip multiple times. I'll start refusing them.

It's supposed to be "Strung" not Stringed. Stringed isn't a word.
And that isn't a question. xp I realize - it's deliberate. Don't mention my spelling errors to me (or what you think is errors)... most likely, I realized them long before you came here.

ABJD and BJD pretty much mean the same thing. They're short forms for the terms Asian Ball-Jointed Doll and Ball-Jointed Doll. They are made usually of resin, and the style of doll I'm talking about is usually made in Asia (though there are a few artists in north america and europe who make them in limited batches for fun and profit. But the big companies are all in asia). They are incredibly customizable dolls that can have their hair, eyes, clothes, and even makeup changed. They are very versatile, and incredibly posable.

They usually come in four size classifications: Tiny, MSD, SD, and Hound.

TINY means from around 9cm-35cm-ish. (3.5-13.8ish inches)
MSD stands for Mini Super Dollfie, and means from around 35cm-46cm-ish. (13.8-18.1ish inches)
SD stands for Super Dollfie, and means from around 55cm-65cm-ish (21.7-25.6 inches)
HOUND size is named after the first doll of that size, and is right around 70cm. (27.6 inches)

These dolls are often used for photostories, as art models, as tests for new clothing designs, and as characters for novels/comics/plays. People will create characters for them, roleplay the characters, and even make friends with other doll owners and have their dolls interact.

For anyone interested in these dolls, I warn you, they are INCREDIBLY expensive. Think very carefully before you decide to get one of them. It's a large expense and a BIG decision. Most children/teens/students can NOT afford them.

I'm looking for art of my OCs and possibly some avatar art. Single shots, couples, group shots, I have requests for all of them. Headshots, bust, waist up, 3/4, fullbody... sketch, inked, CG, traditional media, experimental... pretty much anything you want to do, I'm interested in. ^^ So basically, look through my characters and such, and decide what you'd be interested in doing, and post to discuss it with me. ^^

Also! I don't have a preferance as to if the characters are drawn with visible doll joints, or in a more human style. ^^ It's really up to you, and what you prefer.

I do have characters who get along better with each other than some, so here's a sort of dynamic list.

Jean-Claude loves (and loves to torment) Blair and Natalie. He doesn't get along well with Ethan. He's friends with Nimeth, Kyosuke, and a friendly rival to Brishen.
Blair is Tristan's younger brother. He is an older brother figure to Azami. He's attracted to Jean-Claude, but doesn't trust him. He dislikes Ethan and keeps an eye on him.
Natalie thinks of Jean-Claude as an annoyance, unless he's being serious. She gets along with Blair and Kyosuke because they're calm. Thinks Tristan is too loud. Keeps an eye on Nimeth. Likes Brishen, for some reason.
Ethan is in love with Azami, and scared of Blair as a result. Enjoys Nimeth's company when she isn't trying to piss him off. Doesn't mind Tristan or Brishen, dislikes the others.
Azami considers herself Blair's little sister. She likes everyone equaly. Kinda intimidated by Natalie and Brishen.
Tristan is Blair's older brother, and Kyosuke's roommate. Fond of Hannah as a result. Likes everyone, especially more charasmatic characters.
Kyosuke is Tristan's roommate, and Hannah's boyfriend. He gets along well with Jean-Claude, Brishen, and Nimeth.
Hannah is Kyosuke's girlfriend, and gets along well with Azami, Tristan, Blair and sometimes Natalie. Does not like Ethan. Intimidated by Jean-Claude and Brishen.
Nimeth gets along well with Jean-Claude, Kyosuke, and Brishen. She likes picking on Ethan. She thinks Blair's kinda boring. She'd oddly tender with Azami.
Brishen is a friendly rival of Jean-Claude's. He adores all the girls, and has a bad feeling about Ethan.

When we've decided to make a deal, I will send the trade. I will only confirm the trade when I've seen the completed piece of art. You can feel free to watermark it, but I have to look out for myself, too. ^^

I tried to only use stock photos and link to things done by members of the doll community, so please click if it says to click, as it's probably something important, but I don't have permission to use the image.

ALSO! If you want outfit references or something, just ask, and I'm sure I can scrounge something up. I tried to leave it fairly open - anything in their style is okay. But I know some artists prefer actually specific visual references, so just ask. If you need more information about ANYTHING, ask. ^^

Jean-Claude is a trickster character. He's suave and slick, and a horrible joker. He's a very sensual character, who hits on everyone discreetly - man or woman. Oddly, though, he's really not interested in most people, and refuses to clairify his sexual preferance to the others. He teases them in the way just to see their reactions, which is why he does most things - just to see what others will do. In fact, he often acts the way he does just because people expect him to - he's alot nicer than people realize, and than they let him be. He plays bass, and often gets philosophical.

After tormenting Blair in this way for prolonged periods of time, he begins to realize he's developed feeling for him. He immediately realizes the problem with this - he's teased him so much, he knows that if he admits his feelings, Blair will think it's another joke. He also cares for Natalie, as she's the only one who calls him on his jokes and defenses, and demands for him to get serious if he wants her to be serious. His feelings for both of them throw him off and confuse him, as he's so used to not caring about the people he seduces. Or them caring about him - he keeps his past and feelings carefully locked away.

His style is very sleek, clean, and sharp. His clothing is always immaculate, and perfectly coordinated. He enjoys Elegant Gothic Aristocratic, and fantasy-style suits and such (think outlandish outfits with lots of grommets, chains, and buckles). Will wear other things, but very tailored, stylish suits and outfits. Believes in coordination, and in wearing uncomfortable things if they look good. Tends to dress in white, but will wear other colours like black, grey, dark blue, red, and when paired with white - peridot green. Not adverse to wearing girls clothing. Can make bloomers work.

When drawing him, if eye shape factors into your art, please make sure to do half-closed eyes, and his smile should be a little sad - sort of self mocking, if you know what I mean. He should always look kinda amused or smug, unless the intent of the piece is to highlight his tragic past, or the problems in his various relationships/interactions. If interested in drawing his earrings, please ask for image referances.

Blair is incredibly mellow. He's an artist, who prefers sketching, sculpting, and watercolours. He pretty much believes that things that will happen WILL happen, and for a reason, so he might as well sit back and enjoy it. He's pretty quiet and withdrawn, but incredibly kind. He mothers all his housemates impartially... not because he wants to, but he can't stand to see someone unprepared, or doing something dangerous. It takes a long time to make him angry, but when he DOES get mad, watch out - he's dangerous. Because really, the only think that'll make him incredibly mad is those he cares about being threatened, and he'll do anything to protect them.

He loves his older brother Tristan, but the two of them are almost polar opposites, energy wise. His brother is so loud and exuberant that you can almost see Blair flinch and pull away from him sometimes. Azami, who he considers his little sister, is much more his speed as far as temperment goes. Though she's beautiful and trusts him completely, his relationship with her is strictly famillial. He would die to protect her - after all, you can't choose your real family, but they chose each other. He really doesn't like Ethan, as he can see the darkness in his personality, and the way he looks at Azami disquiets him. Against his better judgement, he's attracted to Jean-Claude (Blair is the only openly bi character), though he knows Jean-Claude is a terrible tease, and feels he'll only hurt and play with him.

His style is very relaxed, very casual, and very comfortable. He wears alot of soft purples, browns, tans, and blues. He often wears faded jeans, sweaters, turtlenecks, and scarves. He's also big on sandals (Hippy! xd ) and decorative belts. He wears alot of paperboy hats, usually backwards. He's very tall and thin.. a "magnificent waif". If forced to dress up, he'd probably wear suede, and try to stick to his normal colours (and jeans or cord pants) if possible.

When drawing him, try to make him tall, lanky, and if possible, a bit like a dreamer, or absentminded.

Natalie could easily be called the "ice queen". She's a very serious, studious person. She's always found with her nose in a book. It's not that she's a student or anything like that... she just enjoys learning. She gets irritable with people who interrupt her for no reason, and loud people. She prefers frankness to being circumspect, and thinks people need to be more real. She's a sucker for british comedies and dry humor. She's alot more likely to like someone if she thinks they're genuine than if they're fake. She's rather sophisticated, and enjoys the finer arts.

Natalie's no-nonsense attitute is rather offputing to alot of the other characters, especially some of the more frivilous ones. She doesn't much like Nimeth, who's lusty and bawdy, while she herself is classy and and somewhat conservative. She very much dislikes Jean-Claude, who she believes is a playboy incapable of the seriousness needed for a mature relationship. She only warms to him when he drops the smiles and play, and lays his soul bare. (But who knows if that's the truth or another facade?) Oddly, though, she accepts the sort of comments that make her frown at Jean-Claude, from Brishen with a smile and thanks. Blair makes her smile with his tenderness, and Kyosuke's style of wit is one of the few things that can make her crack up.

Librarian-chic is the style that most suits her. Stylish, but demure. She tends to wear alot of neutrals, brown, tan, and sage green. She's a fan of argyle, and wears glasses like those pictured above. Her hair is often worn up, in the manner of Riza Hawkeye from FullMetal Alchemist, though her bangs/the front part is longer, down to her chin, and curves to frame her face. It's also the colour pictured in the doll picture above - a sort of ashy brown. When dressing up, she prefers simple classic looks that will never go out of style.

When drawing her, feel free to make her look haughty or cold, or with a book.

Ethan is as feisty as his red hair might suggest. Passionate is the word to describe him - he never does things by halves - he throws himself into everything he does. The most "male" of the group in his interests, being an avid gamer, computer geek, motorcycle enthusiast, and is very interested by politics. His disposition is rather mecurial, and he tends to shift dramatically from laughing, to deadly quiet, with everyone stepping lightly around him. Is really intense sometimes, and is quick to fight and throw a punch.

The downside of his passionate nature happens to be his relationship with Azami. Ethan thinks she is the most beautiful creature on earth, and it pains him that she doesn't really return the "affection" he feels for her - she doesn't notice his feelings. He's almost stalkerish around her, determined to win her. Blair, however, does see Ethan's feelings for her, and has made it clear that he doesn't approve. There's something in Blair's eyes that scares Ethan, and he tries to act only when Blair isn't around. Ethan really doesn't like Jean-Claude, as he likes hitting on Ethan, fully knowing Ethan's a bit of a homophobe. Gets along with Nimeth when she's being witty and amusing, but Nimeth also likes to poke at Ethan's fear of other men being attracted to him, which pisses him off.

His style is very much dress-casual... he loves wearing jeans with a beater or tee and a blazer. He tends to dress a bit more punk than anyone else in the group, with alot of grommet, chains, buckles, layering, and d-rings. He likes dark colours, and unique detailing. He's really uncomfortable in full dress clothes. Thinks of ties as nooses.

When drawing Ethan, please try to make him look intense - either slightly pissed, or broody, or excited. Also, please either make his hair a dark red, or a more orangeish red, like the foxfur wig pictured.

Azami is everyone's child. She is a sweet, innocent girl who doesn't just believe in the good in everyone - she can't see the bad at all. She loves everyone in a completely platonic way. The youngest of the group, she looks up to the others for help and guidance. She also acts much younger than her real age. She takes what people say at face value (and often literally)... she never notices when people hit on her, as she doesn't see herself as someone pretty. Or ugly - she just is. This sort of view leads to alot of problems, and she needs to be protected from her own naievite. She's very quick to smile, and believes a hug can fix anything.

Azami does have a smile and a hug for everyone, but she especially showers them on Blair. She's been with him for a long time, and though she knows they're not actually related, she remains unswayed by his beauty and thinks of him only as a brother. (In fact, she'd be horrified if someone suggested a different sort of relationship for them.) She has no clue (at first, anyways) of Ethan's feelings for her, and doesn't understand the tension between him and Blair. She's determined to make them like each other. She is a little intimidated by Nimeth and Brishen, but thinks Tristan and Kyosuke are great fun.

Innocence is the name of her style... she dresses in primarily gothic lolita styles. Very light colours, very little-girl feminine, very victorian. She adores dusty rose shades of pink, and anything with alot of frills, lace, and ruffles. Pretty much anything from the stores Victorian Maiden, Angelic Pretty, Innocent World, and Baby, The Stars Shine Bright are her style. She also loves accessories, hats, headbands, purses, scarves, and stuffed animals.

When drawing her, try to make her look happy or cheery, unless the point of the piece it to highlight the dysfunctional relationship with Ethan. In group shots, please have her sitting on the floor if possible, by either Ethan or Blair. She very much is the sort to just flop on the floor instead of finding a proper chair. She should also be drawn shorter than any other character. Exact height doesn't really matter, but if you NEED a referance, she should be no taller than Blair's shoulder. (Though I'm not being picky about that. xd )

Tristan is the most carefree of the boys. He's quick to laugh and smile, and his exhuberance is infectious. He's wild and enjoys spontenaetiy. He's very much the type to live for today, and never regret anything. Waiting and being patient aren't his strong points - he wants to do things immediately. His brash nature results into him getting into problems often, but he's so charismatic an likeable that he can often talk his way out of it. AND make friends out of those he just alienated by being rash. He tends to think everyone is his friend, which leads to him being hurt. He also speaks before he thinks, an can come off as dense and insensitive.

Tristan is quite fond of his little brother, and loves spending time with him. He can often be found at Blair's place bugging him and his roommates, or dragging Blair and assorted friends over to hang out with his roommates. Said roommate, Kyosuke and Hannah, appriciate the energy and fun he brings to their place, as they're both rather quiet people. Gets along well with Ethan, not believing his brother's word about Ethan's dark side, since he's only personally seen the fun, energetic side.

His style is the most slapdash out of all the others. He enjoys bright colours, and thinks matching is HIGHLY overrated. He's probably the only one of the characters who would leave the house with two different coloured socks on. Very casual, liking dark jeans and tshirts with bright or witty characters or designs. He adores stores like Bang-On where he can bring his own designs to have them put on shirts.

When drawing him, please make him the same height as Blair, but not quite as lanky. He should look energetic and excited, and be grinning.

Kyosuke is a very quiet man, who might intimidate people who just meet him by his silence. His favourite answer to any question is "Mmm". As a result, though, when he does deign to speak, people stop and really listen to what he has to say - it's often really well thought out, and deceptively witty. He has a very dry sense of humor, and the more you get to know him, the funnier he is. He's the only Japanese character, and hates fangirls speaking broken japanese at him to be cool. He plays the okoto, and occasionally is a nude model. He's a good man and a trustworthy friend, but doesn't suffer fools lightly.

Kyosuke adores his girlfriend Hannah, and would do anything in his power to protect her. He knows everything about her past, and has worked through it with her. She is the only one who brings out her tender side (except occasionally Azami). He despairs of Tristan sometimes, but is always there to help him out and rescue him when needed. He gets along well with the quieter or more sarcastic characters, and can often be found socializing with Jean-Claude, Nimeth, and Brishen.

His style switches back and forth between two extremes - either sloppy and worn, or traditional japanese. He believes that clothes should be worn until they wear out, and as a result is often in ripped or threadbare clothes. His favourite place to shop is thrift stores. When he's not wearing that, he's wearing japanese clothing, usually yukatas and such. If he has to dress up, he'll be in traditional japanese clothing, but is uncomfortable in such finery. He has his black hair in dreds, often tied back with a bandana. Very fond of cool colours.... blues, greens, purples.

When drawing him, please make him look peaceful or bored. He should be the same height as Blair and Tristan. His character is modeled to look like Kyosuke from the anime, manga, and movie Nana. Source pics are here: Fourth from the bottom, Feel free to draw him with facial hair, or without.

Hannah is the frailest of the girls. She's had alot of problems in her past, drug abuse among them. With the help of her friends, she's living a productive and happy life now, but still has trouble speaking up and making herself heard, other than through her photography. She poses for her own photos occasionally, but never for her work, only for personal experimental art projects. She quiet and withdrawn, which only makes her friendship and smiles worth all the more - they're so rarely given, one can't help but be happy to recieve them.

Hannah is almost a little clingy with Kyosuke, but he doesn't mind. She considers him her saviour, and dates the start of her "life" from when she met him. She can't imagine being with anyone other than him. Tristan is one of the few that can make her laugh, with his sheer exhuberance. He is one of the only people she trusts and loves without reservation, other than Kyosuke. She enjoys hanging out with Blair, as he's gentle enough to soothe her nerves. She senses the anger in Ethan, and shies away from him.

Her style is split due to her work. When she's working, she prefers to be comfortable and wear sweats and a tank top, flowing skirts, very bohemian/art student looks, with her hair up. When she's not working, she tends to wear very stylish New-York cutting edge fashion. She's the most modern dressing of the girls. She enjoys modest skirt suits with bright gem coloured silk shirts. She very much likes necklaces, and brightly coloured kerchifs.

When drawing her, please make her tall, the same height as Kyosuke, Tristan, and Blair. She should look bashful or shy, unless the point is to highlight her past problems. in group pics, please place her next to Kyosuke.

Nimeth is quite the little hedonist. She is lust and decadence personified. She is suprisingly the crudest of the group, always with a bawdy joke or anecdote. She really doesn't care if her speech or lifestyle offends anyone, and manages to be classy when others would seem slutty. Anyone who writes her off does so at their own risk, though - behind the lazy smiles is a keen mind and a perverse sense of right and wrong. She enjoys tormenting those she thinks deserve it, and pulls no punches with her snide comments and sharp jests.

Her humor and disposition lends Nimeth well to play with Jean-Claude, Kyosuke, and Brishen, holding her own and teasing them back. She considers them her best friends... as much as she thinks of those things. She enjoys tormenting Ethan, and just can't help picking on him. She does like him, until he says or does something that irritates her, and he knows just how to press his buttons when he does. Completely against her nature, she's tender with Azami, treating her kindly.

Her style is very reflective of her personality... she is the temptress, the seductress. She wears darker gothic lolita clothes, and some elegant gothic aristocratic. She likes things that are sophisticated, but revealing. She prefers dark colours like black and blood red. She often dresses like a darker Azami, or a sluttier Natalie. When drawing her, please make her average height (same as Jean-Claude), and very voluptuous. She should be shameless and seductive, lazy and hedonistic.

Brishen is of Roma (Gypsy) decent, and has no problem buying into the steriotypes of his people - if people think they know him, it just gives him more manuvering room. He's fond of theivery and gambling, usually returning the stolen item with a flourish, grin and a wink, and using his winnings to treat his friends, and those he just won from. He's flamboyant, devious, and superstisious, but a good man at heart, who always tries to do what he thinks is right.

Every "hero" needs a rival, and Brishen serves as such to Jean-Claude. Both are trickster characters, flatterers who think they can get their way. They're so much alike that they can't help but like each other, even as they strive against each other. Watch out for being caught in pratical joke crossfire when they're around. The thing that really irritates Jean-Claude is that Natalie thinks Brishen is charming, and accepts the sort of compliments from him that she'd glare at Jean-Claude for. He adores all the ladies and guards their honour even while teasing them, and he has a really bad feeling about Ethan.

His style is very old, faded glory. He dresses often like a typical gypsey or pirate, and brings that sort of flair to his normal outfits. Enjoys jewelry and weapons (has two knives names Ace and Jack, a handgun named Dice, and for when the s**t really hits the fan, a sawed off shotgun named Snake Eyes.) Often has bandanas, scarves, and gambling paraphenalia. Fond of vests, courderoy, velvet, belts, and cloaks. He enjoys both bright gem-like colours, and rich deep blues and reds.

When drawing him, please make him look flamboyant, like a good storyteller. Mysterious and engaging. His hair should be a shoulder-length-ish layer that curves around his head, and a waist length underlayer plaited and tied off, strung with beads and such. He should be average height.

It's not only OC's I'm after... I also really enjoy avatar art. Either of the hairstyles I have pictured are fine for pics, but if you choose the smooth one, I'd like my hair pictured in a cut roughly like this. Any of the outfits pictured will do, as well. I just ask that if the outfit you pic had winged anklets or a kiki kitty you discuss it with me and make sure I want them included. In ALL pics, I'd very much like my Doll Ears, Scar of Hero, Emo Glasses, and Long Drag/Cig pictured. They're my signature items.

I also adore being drawn with my friends, so if you want to do some couples or group work, let me know.

And one last thing... I'm a sucker for being drawn in styles/costumes from my favourite anime series. If you're an anime fan, let me know... I'd love to be drawn in Bleach Hakama, Fullmetal Alchemist military uniform (miniskirt version! xd ), in Battle Royale school uniforms, like Yuuko from xxxHolic, in Real's costume in Ergo Proxy, and pretty much ANYTHING gothic lolita, or victorian-esque. Among others. xd So if you're in the mood for anime fanart, so am I. ^^ I also like being drawn WITH characters from anime/video games, and certain J-rock stars. ^^
