The City of Empyrean is set in a temperate climate, with moderately cold winters (seeing a small amount of snowfall) and moderately hot summers (not reaching over 35 degrees C). To the north lies what remains of the Old Forests, to the west the grazing plains and tundra, to the east a barren waste of rock and ravines, and to the south the open sea.

Many years ago, there were no walls around the City of Empyrean, nor were there such vigilant Magical protections being cast. Now these things are thought of as mere necessity, and have become a way of life.

Although the War with the Outsiders is nearly ended, it still wages in some parts beyond the walls, and from time to time the Empyreans are forced to face them directly, sending their Gatekeepers to beat back the advances. While the Outsiders have nothing but science on their side, the Empyreans have both science and magic to their credit and because of this are heavily targeted as a threat by Outsider troops, and for the same reasons the Empyreans believe themselves superior to the Outsiders.

Shortly after the War began, the Outsiders used an unknown chemical agent that forever changed the Empyrean race. In fact, there are some who say the chemical is what made the Empyreans what they now are. The chemical was meant to kill off the Empyreans, but instead it rendered them barren.

Our story picks up many years after the beginning of the war.

F.A.Q

1. The World of Empyrean was created in its entirity by me, Taro. If you have a question regarding the nature of the world, its rules or the rules of the roleplay, and find my previously written posts to be inadequate, please either PM me with your query, or post it in an OOC thread outside of the rp thread in which you are roleplaying.
2. All Art is drawn by me, Taro. The Zero Stage Empyreans are purchased as is, for whatever bid wins him or her. No Changes can be made to this design upon purchase. When you achieve a higher stage and wish to put additions onto your Empyrean, please tally up all of the additions you want for the next stage and submit it in a PM or in an OOC thread. For additions, you have the right to request options when available or colours at no additional charge. As examples have been given for each addition, if you are not pleased with how your Empyrean looks in its next stage, this is entirely of your own selection, and I am not responsible. Note that no addition may be removed at any time.
3. You are allowed to name your Emyrean whatever you'd like. But I would appreciate it greatly if you tried to stick to the theme of the game. Feel free to make up any name, using the teachers or other approved Empyrean's names for inspiration. This means, try to distance yourself from Japanese names (like Sasuke) or mundane English names (like Joseph or Lorrain), and do take your name seriously. Gag names (like GreenMachine) are disrespectful of your Empyrean's existence.
4. You must be literate to play. This means that you are to make the utmost of your talents when writing. While typos or spelling errors are forgiven, if you notice them, please repair them with the lovely little 'Edit' button provided for you so as to maintain clarity and good storytelling.
5. I will decide when you have reached the next Stage. Do not harrass me with messages like "Oh, cummon, that last fight totally gave me the experience needed to proceed! Taro you're too picky!". These are not going to inspire to draw you new art. On the other hand, if I am busy at the time of your Empyrean's transition, you are still allowed, and indeed encouraged to post. Please have patience with me while I update your certificates and draw you new art.
6. I retain all rights to the Art. While I will consider the Empyrean you play your 'character' after dedicated roleplaying, I still retain rights to the art itself. This means I will post it in my DA account and on photobucket, etc. Feel free to take your Empyreans to other Gaian artists, (or myself if I have open slots) to commission additional art of your Empyrean.
7. You may play multiple Empyreans. But if you choose to you must keep in mind that you will need to purchase additions for both when the time comes. In order to play mulitple accounts I request that you restrict one Empyrean to one account. This will keep confusion to an absolute minimum.
8. How much do they cost? The total base cost for an Empyrean is 250k. I do not request this full amount all at once, but stage by stage. (They are paid for in installments and only when they grow. The first stage costs 50k.)
9. How can I get one? You can join Empyreans only if you display competant writing skill and show dedication to joining this long-running game. Applications will be reviewed, and must include a writing sample and references who can vouch for your capabilities.
10. If you have any questions not answered on this page, please ask!

The Transitions of Empyreans

Empyreans will go through three transitions in their life span. The first transition from Zero to One gives them their first additions, such as small horns, a little tail, the beginnings of wings etc... These additions can be grown further at later transitions or left as is.

Requirements for the First Transcendence:
~ The Empyrean must make at least 1 RP post in each of the 16 classes in the White District
~ The Empyrean must attend at least one Event
~ The Empyrean must make at least 1 RP post in the Teacher's Lounge.
~ If classes are missed, and other requirements are made, special tutoring may be available.

At Stage One the Empyreans can learn magic, and can choose one of the following four types of magic: Tribal, Ritual, Circle or Grimoire, and select three spells that the Empyrean wishes to learn. The Empyrean may add these three spells into their repitoire after having successfully used the spells three times in a situation (such as the fighting arena or fighting monsters).

Requirements for the Second Transcendence:
~ The Empyrean must take an Apprenticeship in the city
~ The Empyrean must study to become one of the following: Grigori, Seraphim, Gatekeeper or Chorus
~ The Empyrean must participate in at least one of the following: Duel, Monster Hunt, Golem Creation, Abberation Evoking, or crafting of some form of supply or goods.

At Stage Two, the Empyrean can take a job in the city. Jobs can be anything from Artist to Monster Trainer, and these are usually based on whichever classes the Empyrean liked best in school. At Stage Two the additions grow further. 3 more spells may be learned and added to the Empyrean's repetoire. By the end of Stage Two, the Empyreans are allowed to leave the City for their transition to Stage Three.
At Stage Three the Empyrean makes their final changes to/adds new additions, and returns to the City. Once returned to the City, Empyreans may take a Position in the City such as: Grigori, Seraphim, Gatekeeper, Chorus.

Requirements for the Third Transcendence:
~ The Empyrean's Apprenticeship must advance to Career status.
~ The Empyrean must help at least one lower Stage Empyrean through RP, whether that be casual, assisting in a task, or tutoring
~ The Empyrean must succeed their test for their chosen position
~ The Empyrean must purchase with Credits earned a Gate Pass out of the city

What It Means to be Active

Thread Presence
~You need to be spotted around the thread at some point, either ICly or OOCly, it doesn't matter
~Regular appearances would be very much appreciated (at least once every two weeks is awesome)

Character Activity
~You must flesh out your Empyrean's journal. Blocking out the posts with emotes does not count.
~Participate in Class (be as active as you can be)
~PRPs and Events are optional
~However, should you choose to IM RP instead of PRP in the Guild, you must at least make a mention of doing so in your journal. (Logs are not required but PLEASE state somewhere that you are RPing off Gaia so that we know you haven't run off)
~Do not be active ONLY during Events. While activity during these special events is awesome, if that's the only time you're active, it doesn't reflect as well as it could.

Each Empyrean grows through 4 stages: Zero, One, Two, and Three. When first brought to the city, the children are infused with Essence and become a member of one of the four alignments - Sanguine, Phlegm, Choleric, and Melancholic. Personalities and body types also tend to become aligned with three archetypes - Kinesthetic, Journeyman, and Academic.

~*~*~*~

Stages

Each Empyrean starts life as a Zero Stage creature, with simple colours and no Additions. As these simple creatures they cannot weild magic, and do not have the knowledge and skills that will make them true Empyreans. Any additions added to an Empyrean as it changes from one stage to another cannot be undone. These Additions may be left as is in size, colour and shape, or they may be added onto again to increase their size, change their colour or shape.

Empyreans start out around the physical age of 5-12. Older husks are unheard of. As they ascend, their physical age jumps by 10, so an Empyr that starts at age 5 would be age 15 at stage One, 25 at stage Two, and 35 at stage Three.

User Image
.....Stage Zero

Stage Zeros live, eat, bath, play and learn in the White District, which is in essence The Academy. Under no circumstances may a Zero Stage Empyrean be allowed to leave the White District. Within the walls of the White District, young Empyreans are taught 16 subjects by 16 Professors. The subjects are meant to enlighten the Empyrean's mind and enable them to make the transition to Stage One.
The Subjects taught are: Rhetoric, Literature, Magic Theory, Astronomy, Philosophy, Science, Mathematics, History, Botany, Animal Care, Music, Art, Cooking, Physical Education, Crafting, and Law.

User Image
Stage One.....

By Stage One, Empyreans begin to show signs of their Essence Blood surfacing in the form of horns, wings, tails, claws, markings, etc. Stage One Empyreans are allowed to leave the White District, and are given housing in one of the Four Inner Districts, depending on Alignment. Sanguine Aligned Empyreans move to the Red District, Melancholy to the Black District, Phlegm to the Blue District and Choleric to the Green District. Here they begin to work for the City, doing crafting, art, music, training and magical application so that they may benefit their city and enable it to prosper.

User Image
.....Stage Two

At Stage Two, Empyreans can take one of the Positions addressed later: Gatekeeper, Grigori, Seraphim, or Chorus. These positions take active roles in the city to defend and fight Outsiders, Monsters and keep younger Empyreans in line with the Law. At Stage Two the signs of Essence more prominantly show, some developing more signs others having their signs grow further. Stage Two Empyreans have stronger Magic and more authority.

User Image
Stage Three.....

An Empyrean will finally reach Stage Three once he or she has left the City of Empyrean and seen the Outside. It is at this point that their final changes will take place, although these are usually in form of Essence. Stage Three Empyreans have so much gathered Essence that the Essence itself becomes visible when the Empyrean undertakes the task his or her Alignment is best suited for. For instance, Sanguine Empyreans will begin showing their Essence when they exert themselves a great deal in Physcal Endeavours; Melancholy Empyreans will show their Essence when they do a great deal of thinking or reading; Phlegm will show theirs when they become too emotional for good or ill; Choleric will show theirs when working with matters of the world, such as flora, fauna or crafting. All Empyreans will show their Essence when casting Magic of any kind.

Personality Traits: watery personality; sociable, dramatic, talkative, expressive, easily attracted and quick to fall in/out of love, sensitive, empathetic, compassionate, suspicious.

Often Phlegm are best suited to the Academic or Journeyman Orientations.

Orientations

Journeyman
Journeymen Empyreans are medium in physical build; they need to work hard to get a muscular build, but are naturally very fit. They are decently intelligent and reasonably aligned with emotions, but tend to be in the middle of the pack. Journeymen have the ability to breach the barriers between classifications, Orientations and Alignments and explain things to either side in terms they can understand. While the Journeymen do not have a distinct position of their own, they are often needed to balance out the scales, taking sides to interpret for Outsiders or clashing parties. The Journeymen Empyreans are versatile and can aptly pursue any task or career. Because of this they tend to pick up a more varied repetoire of skills and abilities than the other two Orientations, making them useful in a wide variety of different situations.

Academic
Academics are thin and waifish - sometimes bordering on underweight or skinny. They have slow metabolisms and don't need to eat very much. They tire easily when they exert themselves and have a very hard time putting on muscle. Because of their light size they can be quite quick if they train to be. Academics are brilliant in the mind, and this enables them to excell at magics and learned information. They have great memories and great analytical skills, but have a difficult time understand things from a perspective of feeling. They often consider emotions to be excessive, irrational or baffling, and prefer to deal in terms of fact or fiction, disregarding emotion entirely. Because of this, they are often frustrated with themselves because they lack the skills to understand their own impulses, or to find the root of their problems when upset.

Kinesthetic
Kinesthetic are strong, with great stamina and a high metabolism. They put on muscle quickly and easily, and never seem to need to work out to keep their tone. They grow restless easily and need to keep active. Purely intellectual pursuits bore them, and they have a very difficult time paying attention or maintaining interest. While they find deep thinking over-complicated, they do feel a great deal, and react on impulse more that act of logic. They do as they feel to satisfy their needs, there is no 'why' only a 'must'. Although it would take years to explain a concept or a skill to them in rhetoric alone, they learn very quickly if they are simply shown. They have the strongest instincts of the three Orientation, and tend to find what they like very quickly and early int heir lives. In combination with their dedication to their interests, they tend to excell at their chosen path as they devote their all to their goals.

Events are special activities that take place on a monthly basis and are meant for the owners of Empyreans. Non-owners are welcome to take part in an OOC manner (using brackets, etc) as well. These events are meant to further the metaplot, build character relations, and test the mettle of the young Empyreans.

Through these special events participants will receive a plushie that is linked to that event as well as some special reward for activity in most cases. Participation is rewarded! So make sure you pay attention and pop in when we're hosting our monthly events!

List of Past, Present, and Future Events can be found here.

QUEST THREAD

Upcoming Event
Titan Resurfaces: A Winter Event!!

The Dates:
November ??

The Event:
Titan was Golem created by a Gatekeeper Sanguine named Greithos many years ago. Greithos long since fell in battle and his body was recovered by the Grigori soon enough to neutralize the monster into which he swiftly turned. Titan was released from his Technoring at the time of Greithos' death and he underwent a rather sudden and unusual change when his master died. He melted into the ground and disappeared. Scans, scrying and searching revealed no sign of the once mighty Titan. Years have passed, Titan was written down in the anals of history, but in Empyrean memory he was soon forgotten.

Recently his spirit was picked up by the diviners in the Dreaming Pool. To their surprise his spirit seemed to be in many parts, and those parts seemed to be...moving. Keep an ear to the ground for hints and signs, Titan may surface at any time, and without a master, who's to say what his purpose will be?

The Contest:
The object of this event is three fold:
Firstly: To reactivate the stagnant state Empyreans has slipped into by encouraging people to post in the main thread.
Secondly: To reveal some more of the metaplot to remind folks of the world in which their characters exist, and hopefully rekindle your love of this place as players.
Thirdly: To reward those who have been faithful and sticking by despite my lull of events and updates and for the general lack of offered stimulus. Thank you, you know who you are.

The Clues:
Through the next three months (sept, october and november) Random bits of information will be deposited here in the main thread. These clues will be partly story, partly hints and partly puzzles. Each Player must have their Empyrean(s) discuss the clue given with at least 1 other Empyrean and post the resulting RP in your journal (this RP can take place in your journal to start, in a free area of the White District or in IM RP, just post the result in your journal so we can see the results) For those that have multiple Empyreans you do not need to have each empyrean respond to each questions, but you must use all of your Empyreans at least once. You can not have more than one monologue RP (between your own empyreans, or with owned hybrids/golems/aberrations). And make sure you have your Empyreans interact with a different Empyrean each clue!

The Plushie:

The plushie for this event is Ardys.

The Rules:
(kinda covered in the event description, but i'll reiterate them here later)

Keep your ear to the Ground for any hint of a sound
that Titan is waking and soon to be found~

Extras for Your Empyrean

Aside from Empyreans, there are a few other things you can collect for your Empyrean to use in the game, such as special items, pets and familars.

Techno-equips
Any Empyrean may gather and use techno-equips. At Stage Zero, they are only available through special events, as gifts from fellow students or teachers, and on rare occassion found during highly-active RP. Stage Ones and up may purchase techno-equips with the Credits they earn from dutiful or enthusiastic RP from Gregor's shop. Techno-equips must be 'assigned' to a specific technoring on the individual's body in order to be utilized in RP, sparring or tournaments. This can be done by interacting with Professor Kortus in the White District, or Gregor or Metro outside of the White District.

Cicus Pets
Cicus Pets are wild animals that somehow managed to become tainted with the Essence normally utilized to create Empyreans from Husks. When these animals happen across the ether, they are branded with a glowing Cicus mark, and they change. Their colourations tend to be bright and unnatural for a normal animal of the species, and they become highly intelligent. Cicus pets choose their masters, not the other way around. Once they choose their master, they form a telepathic bond with their master, enabling them to 'speak' to their owner. Cicus pets are only granted as prizes in special RP events, and cannot be purchased. They can be owned and raised by any stage Empyrean and can be taught skills or tricks. They can be kept as pets, or they may be assigned to a Certed Technoring so that they may be stored and released in a portable fashion. In order to assign a Cicus to a Certed Technoring, the pet and ring must be presented to Professor's Lelaus or Kortus, or Metro outside the White District.

Monsters
Monsters for the most part are violent and dangerous creatures. However, there are a fewthat can be kept in Certed Technorings, and also a few who can be controlled and used in fights against Outsiders. Only Stage Twos may learn to train them, and only Stage Three may actually use them. For more on Monsters, please see Professor Lelaus' post in the Teacher's thread.

Abberations
Abberations are what occur when an Empyrean Essence if bonded to a mineral. There is only ever 1 Abberation of a specific mineral at a time, as it is in essence the 'soul' of the mineral personified. They look like half-formed spirits rising from their host rock or stone, and tend to be quite small. Each Abberation has three skills which can be used in duels, fights or magic casting; typically each Abberation has one offensive, one defensive and 1 specialty skill. Abberations, when not summoned, look like a gem, stone, or rock mineral which can be carried in a pouch, pocket or technoring. When summoned, the spirit of the Abberation rises up and forms a head and shoulders. Each Abberation has its own personality, and they can speak, sing and use telepathy as they choose. Abberations can be purchased during specially held flat sales in the shop thread or in Euphrasia's Shop, for a fee of 5,000g. Abberations do not grow, but will be certed, and for a bribe can be pictured with the Empyrean at later levels. You may own as many Abberations as you manage to get your hands on. Abberations may only be purchased and owned by Stage One Empyreans.

Golem
Golems are grown from ethereal substances. Like the Abberations they can be summoned to help you fight in a battle or duel. However, the Golems are purely physical in their fighting abilities, whereas the Abberations are magical. Since this is the case, they are full formed. In order to grown a Golem you need to RP growing it, and spend the time it takes to mature it before it can be used. A Golem has two stages, first is the Shard Sample, in which a Golem Shard has been found and selected to be grown. After love and diligence, the Golem matures into a full-form Golem, and can fight in the Arena and outside the walls of the city. Golems can be made from all manner of substances. A few examples: Dragon Breath, Gorgon Scales, Phoenix Tears, Cloudburst Dew, Sphinx Riddle, Philosopher's Gold. Each Golem will have different strengths and weaknesses based on its development and Shard from which it was grown. Each Golem will have a Specialty Move set that will be unique to that Golem. Unlike Abberations, more than one Golem can be made of the same Shard if another like Shard is found.

Hybrids
Hybrids are pet type familiars. They are plant-animal hybrids. anywhere from 2 to 4 creatures/plants can be fused to create a finished beast. There are three types: Fauna (Those created by fusing only Animal Samples), Flora (Those created by fusing only Plant Samples), and Animus (Those created by fusing at least 1 Animal Sample and 1 Plant Sample). Hybrids make wonderful pets, companions, helpers for specific tasks and servants. Nearly all of the menial labour done in Empyrean City is performed by Hybrids bred for the task.

*** RESTRICTED OPTIONS***

Empyrean Echoes
Echoes are a very rare occurance. Sometimes a single soul will be bound in two Husk bodies. In these rare cases, the set of Husks is brought to the Metatrons and fused with like Essence. This means that they will always be of the same Essence Alignment. Echoes look similar, and tend to have uncanny connections. They finish each others sentances, feel each other's distress or pain, and suffer distress when seperated.
Price: BRIBE ONLY (Min 800K+)

Empyrean Albino
Even more rare than an Echo, Albino Empyreans are those that do not take to an Alignment when fused. Their forms, for whatever reason, instead soak up raw Essence and instead of becoming Monsters, they become Albinos. Instead of an utter lack of Pigment, their colours shift to mimick those of the Alignments they spend time with, the magic they spend time casting, extreme emotional states etc. When they begin their Empyrean lives, they are automotons in nature, with little inflection and no predetermined personalities or aptitudes. They develope their skills and interests based on what they apply themselves to, and can become very proficient in time. As they develope Additions, they are always Limited Additions, and these tend to warp and meld to reflect their experiences.
Albinos tend to be very suceptible to Broken and Cursed Stati. There are rarely more than one Albino alive in the City at a time.
Price: EXTREME BRIBE ONLY (As in impossibilities list) as well as Restricted by Game Moderators.

Extras and Events

Empyreans are hard to get. I don't give out too many, and they don't go out very often. So, what can you get in the mean time?

Well, Taro loves Events. In fact Taro intends to hold at least one event a month. ^^ Events can be in game, such as Duels or Concerts to attend, which are intended for the players as you need an Empyrean to participate, and the event prizes are very much character-based. Events can also be based on our world, such as holidays, birthdays, auctions, flatsales and the like.
Always keep your eyes on the thread's title, as that will tell you which event is up next, and the posts in the thread itself will show you what is being offered, when and for whom.

Types of Plushies

1. The Speech Bubble.
This is not a plushie, but a non-chibi regular headshot of your Empyrean, as designed to be used in posting circumstances. The idea is that it will look like your Empyrean is speaking. They look quite schnazzy when added to colour-coded text. Price: 8,000g.

This was Grave's stage Zero Speech Bubble.

2.The Homage Plushie. This type of plushie is made to look like your own Empyrean or your favourite NPC. If a plushie for the Empyrean you want already exists and you just want a certed copy with your name on it, the price will be only 10% of the cost. Regular cost of an Homage Empyrean is 10,000g.
There will be three slots available for Homage Plushies at a time, and you will need to watch this post for the openings, because I may not always mention it elsewhere in the thread and these are always first come first serve.

This is Grave as an Homage plushie. Plushies can be 'owned' by your Empyrean, and role played as possessions...but if it is of a fellow classmate...have a good reason why you have this plushie of them in your room. sweatdrop Homage plushies can always be rp'd with in the shop thread.

3. The Dream Plushie. This type of Plushie can be requested by players would would like to see what their Empyrean might look like with certain additions (but keep in mind, they will be highly simplified to be plushies) or by non-players who dream of questing for or otherwise attaining an Empyrean of their own. For those who do not have an Empyrean, and wish to purchase a Dream Plushie to display on their quest thread, or in their signature for their quest for the real version of their Dream Empyrean, you may purchase a Dream Plushie at partial cost. How much less this price will be depends on how many places you plan on posting the cert, how long you plan on displaying it in your sig, and how active you are in this thread. The more to post here, the cooler you are, and the more devoted you become, the cheaper the price gets. XD Regular price for a Dream Plushie is 20,000g.

This is grave as a Dream Plushie. Note the different Art than the Homage plushie. ^^

4. The Cosplay Plushie. This type of Plushie has your Empyrean (or your favourite NPC) dressed up as another character. On rare occassions I will do random Empyreans styled to look like certain characters for flatsale. These plushies are extremely rare, and will only be offered for purchase at specific times. Usually they will be offered around event times, but they may be offered from time to time to relieve my bordom, or because I've got some time on my hands. Cosplay plushies cannot be owned by your Empyreans, only by you, their owner. This means, you cannot have your Empyrean snuggling a Lelaus cosplaying Kero-chan from CCS unless it's out of the RP and jesting in this thread. You can always rp the cosplay character in the shop thread. As I really dislike some anime/manga styles or designs, I may decline your request for a Cosplay plushie. If this occurs, I will always give you a chance to make a different choice before I give your slot to the next person in line. For a list of the anime/manga I adore, and are more likely to draw, see the list below. Also, although this rule is not set in stone, I doubt I will draw more than 1 cosplay of a certain character, mostly because I've been there, done that and want something new and fresh. So, if you see someone else has a cosplay you wanted... Tough nuts, (except under extreme bribe conditions). The Regular cost for a Cosplay ranges depending on how much I like the character, how much it suits the character, and how difficult it is to draw. Typical prices range from 30,000g to 60,000g. Original characters of your own creation are certainly welcome, but in any case all Cosplay requests must include at least one link or image of the character's appearance, or it won't happen.

I was curious, under the ones for sale, is the female melancholy still availible, or is she up for auction, due to the fact that some of them mention a buyer, and the others do not. Are they already sold? Or is there a high bid?
This seems interesting.

@ Nny lover,
Melancholic female is up for auction. There is no high bid, but bidding will start at 1k, with a minimum increase of 500g.
I've got her pencils done, and i will be posting the line arts up before i open the bidding, so you all can see what they look like sans colour.
I will open the bidding only after the colours are all ready, and i will give a day's notice before i open bidding.
Thank you so much for your interest! ^^
Man i wanted the Male Phlegm.
Unfortunately, all of the males are called for.
I only have the 4 females up for auction right now...
But depending on how RPing goes...I may release another set of 8 later...
Just a question, why did you make more females then males?
