                          ━━━ ━━ PHASING
                          pon▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀

Phasing is pretty much exactly what you'd expect, or that's what Andy figures. There's a physical object in her way, be it organic or inorganic, and she can move through it. Cement wall, some fence, a tree, a person—she can bypass it. Nothing can get in her way. Physically, at least. She can also lodge herself in it if she stops halfway through, displace whatever was there before, but that tends to be less useful. Not unless she's stealing something from a vault or something, but that's not what she does anyway. Not usually.

As for how it works, well, there's some sort of science behind it, she's sure. A lot of science, really. But it's not her specialty. All she knows are the basics, and that's that she can vibrate her molecules really fast. So fast that it's to the point that she becomes formless. Something like that, anyway. In theory, she can also do it to things she's holding, since she can do it to the clothes on her back, or isolate it to certain parts of her body. However, that's a little beyond her skills right now. Reliably, at least. She's done it a couple times before, but the other attempts have been met with vary levels of success. Usually not.

The price she pays for this skill is not so hard to pay. Not like some others that she's heard about. Not like ZENOSYNE, who ages that much faster. It makes her tired, sure. Bone tired and weary and like she could sleep for days. But that's nothing a little (or a lot) of food can't fix. And this is about the only other part she understands. Something about her cells expending a lot more energy than is normal to oscillate at that rate and mitochondria. So she needs to increase her caloric intake to make up for that. It's why she always keeps some sweets on hand, though that's also partially attributed to her sweet tooth, and can eat in vast quantities without ever seemingly gaining weight.

                              • had an older half-brother by seven years who doted on her
                              • never wanted for much of anything growing up
                              • parents were strict enough and had expectations, but had never been a difficulty to meet them
                              • did well at almost anything she tried her hand at, from sports to the arts to academics
                              • though not with some amount of hard work on her part

                              • might have been a time when others would have stepped back and thought maybe this life was not for them
                              • certainly spent months stomping around and being angry about it
                              • however, brother's death only increased her resolve to do well in his place and his memory
                              • noise control was figured out to be relatively high around that time
                              • was taken in for training by another member of the family and found to do well
                              • when she graduated from school, began working on a university degree, but also took up bounty hunting
                              • RUBATOSIS was also in that line of work and that was a bonus, the idea of getting to work with her friend
                              • she also thought it might be fun, might be a challenge compared to anything else she'd done
                              • it sort of was, but not enough of one in the end
                              • while building up contacts and sources, came across information pertaining to what happened to her brother
                              • learned that one of the men he'd worked with had betrayed him
                              • learned that they'd betrayed the family and lived with a new identity all these years
                              • resolved to find the man, resolved to kill him
                              • met OPIA for the first time when she took one of her hauls to The Ribs
                              • struck up an easy friendship that she enjoyed
                              • it was probably one of the upsides of having to hunt down stupid little miscreants
                              • one of the downsides was easily ANDRONITIS though
                              • that little s**t kept getting away from her and it was embarrassing
                              • but also thrilling because no one got away from her more than once

                              • when OPIA was arrested, was angry and held onto it for some months, just like she did when her brother died
                              • was pleased when OPIA returned though and looked sideways at anyone who questioned it, at least at first
                              • over time, has become more wary of it and of OPIA
                              • in past months, was assigned to work with someone who was under watch of Precrime
                              • it put her on their radar, and she's not best pleased about this turn of events

                      interpretation.

The history of the Colarcio is not a long one. Not if you think about it in terms of the history of the world. Not if you think of about it in terms of history of humankind. Not even if you think about it in terms of what is considered the contemporary era. The modern history of their time. Sixty years is only a drop in a bucket. Empires have risen and fallen in less time than that. But that is not the Colarcio. Not yet. Not ever, if LACHESISM has anything to say about it. The Colarcio is a legacy in the making. Something greater than herself or any other. When she and those of her generation die, the family will live on in the hands of their children, just as it has been handed to her own parents generation by the one before. She will play her part so it may continue after she is gone, because as a third-generation member, the granddaughter of one of the first capo's in the family, loyalty and ******** up values are about the only things that run in her veins.

Morality? The law? They hardly matter to her. Result-driven to an extreme, the end will always justifies the means in her eyes, and LACHESISM sees the world in blacks and whites. There is the family and there is everything else. Either you are loyal, or you are disloyal. Either you are acting for, or acting against the Colarcio. There are no greys for her. Or, if she recognizes them, she does not care for them. It is only selfishness, in the end, that would lead to any sort of betrayal, and that is the most unforgivable crime of them all. And this is why, one day, she will kill the man responsible for getting her own brother killed. A man who betrayed the family and had gotten off without repercussion because everyone assumed he had died. She knows now though. Has seen him alive. Knows that he sold the family - her brother - out for profit and hid himself away with a new identity. He is a traitor, and she will see him die for it.

And though it is true she could have simply informed anyone of his survival the moment she found out, it is also personal. How could it not be, considering how much she loved and admired her brother growing up? Considering that her brother was hers?

One day, she's going to teach him what it means to betray family for personal gain.

One day, she's going to make him regret selling her brother out.

One day, she's going to stick her hand through that b*****d's chest and wrap her fingers around his heart and squeeze.

Anger is stronger for her than any pain, and LACHESISM is nothing if not ruthless and vindictive. Mercy at her hand is never for mercy's sake, but to gain something else.

So as you might see, there is undoubtedly a certain amount of extremism to LACHESISM regarding hey loyalty to the Colarcio and those she has claimed as her own. Perhaps that is part of her upbringing, but some part of it is in her nature as well. She dedicates herself wholly to things, will do whatever she needs to for her people, sometimes even at the expense of everything else around her. Far as she's concerned, the world can burn around her at the end of the day so long as those within her sphere are good and safe. There is no doubt of the lengths she will go to for those she calls her own. And that intense sort of loyalty has the ability to inspire the same in her.

It's also this sort of view on loyalty that effects her view of others. OPIA, for one, has been positively effected by it. Or was positively effected by it. When they first returned, LACHESISM was ridiculously pleased. It meant that OPIA valued the family, still. Meant OPIA was loyal, still. But then the doubts arose as time went on, and LACHESISM began lying to herself, because she would prefer to believe the best because she considers OPIA a friend. Eventually though, she won't be able to do so any longer. Eventually, RUBATOSIS will be sent for OPIA if her suspicions prove true, and the choice in that is not a hard one. Either you are loyal, or you are disloyal. The Colarcio always comes first.

Comparative to OPIA's questionable allegiance, LACHESISM has full faith in RUBATOSIS. At least as far as the family is concerned, anyway. His attachment to ZENOSYNE can be an annoyance, especially after having to hear it near constantly, but she recognizes it. Does not think much of it, because ZENOSYNE is only the head of the Colarcio, just another piece that plays his part, just as the rest of them do. However, she recognizes it and admires it for what it is.

Overall, her less attractive traits, shall we say, do not tend to be readily apparent at first. It comes out in slips of conversation sometimes, in the actions she takes - her lack of forgiveness, her casual apathy for lives belonging to those outside the Colarcio - but LACHESISM hardly presents that way in the beginning. Not with the way she charms people around her with snarky or sarcastic comments, delivered in good humour. Not with how quick she usually is to smile and laugh. Not with the noise she tends to project, happy and bright, seeping into others and making them feel the same. The darker bits all lurk underneath, behind the shamelessly proclaimed adoration for shoes and clothes and trashy romance novels and love for gossip.

LACHESISM also has what might be considered an unexpected and unhealthy love for sweet things. It's quite bad, to be honest, how how large her sweet tooth is. The way she takes her coffee is basically 1/2 cup coffee, 1/4 cream and 1/4 cup sugar, though she is just as happy to order the festively or sometimes not-so festively flavoured lattes and macchiatos at coffee shops. She also usually carries candy in her bag. White chocolate bars from some expensive chocolatier, because she has expensive taste, or maybe a pack of hard candies she likes to suck on. The hard candy has also proven useful for luring the stupider runaway kids into trusting her as well, in the past, go figure.

In terms of history, aside from the deal with her brother, LACHESISM is not all that exciting. She is a legacy in her own right regarding her family tree with respect to the Colarcio, but there were other children in the family like her. She was not made any more special by it, only given a leg up compared to those who joined the family later in life. Who could not be entirely trusted at first, if ever. That said, there were certain expectations placed on her shoulders. To strive for success. To never accept failure.

As child, and even well into adolescence, LACHESISM tended to excel in a number of areas. She was by no means prodigious, but it was rare she met resistance in anything she tried. And, when she did, it only took some extra work to overcome the hurdle. Music, athletics, academics, there were few exceptions. It was almost boring, to be honest, just how easily she could seemingly coast through things. It left her with a sense of ennui. Left her feeling unfulfilled. That's why, while she had options upon reaching her majority, LACHESISM ended up a bounty hunter for the Colarcio. The idea of the chase appealed to her. Something new, something different. So she tracked down kids and loose ends and traitors as the names came to her.

It was not the easiest job at first, but she took to it quickly, just like everything else. And, after some time, it was noted that she was especially good at tracking children, which was how she ended up only ever really getting assigned kids to find, because they turned a high profit, and she had one of the fastest recovery rates regarding them. It was annoying though, to be honest, because it was not as if they ever proved to be that much of a challenge. Also, it was not as if she had ever liked kids very much either. Eventually, tedium settled into her bones as she continued to do this and attempted to pick up threads involving the man who killed her brother, because the days were whittling away the same as each one that came before. Sometimes, it felt like she was only waiting for something big to happen. To disrupt the easy flow of her life up until that point.

And then ANDRONITIS happened. ANDRONITIS happened three times. Was her first real failure, because they were the one that happened again and again and again. The mistake she could not fix. It was vexing, because there were few things LACHESISM had ever well and truly failed at, but it also piqued her interest. Made her focus slightly more on the kid because they disrupted the monotony. It was only a little, because they were but one failure in a sea of success, but all the same, a failure.

More recently, LACHESISM has realized she's come under the scrutiny of Precrime thanks to a previous partner she was assigned to work with. A woman who was under observation without realizing and left LACHESISM as a known associate. It's left her in a slightly more vulnerable position, being on Precrime's radar now, something she hardly cared about before, which has left her feeling a number of things. Chief amongst them, though, is a flutter of excitement, because the idea of being chased instead of being the chaser is a little thrilling. And isn't this what she wanted, anyway? Something exciting? Something big? Something to throw her off-beat? However, at the same time, it's also accompanied by the sting of annoyance, because she's been waiting years to kill this guy. Working her way to finding him. And she does not want to let the opportunity to slip away. Does not want to end up like OPIA did, either, imprisoned for several years.

                      powers and noise.

Phasing is fairly straight forward as a power, I feel. It involves making one's self intangible in some fashion, such that physical things pass through them. Or such that they can pass through physical objects. Depends on the situation. The way LACHESISM is able to do this is through making the matter that makes up her body oscillate at very high frequencies. This enables her to pass through barriers for however long she is able to keep doing so, including organic bodies of matter. And, if she were to stop vibrating her molecules, they would reform together and displace whatever was in that space prior. In theory, she could also avoid attacks from bullets or knives, though that would require her to be almost instantaneously react to the weapon coming her way. More often than not, her reflexes are not that fast, though if she is expecting it, then she can prepare herself for it. At this point in time, LACHESISM's default is to vibrate her entire body. It is what's easiest and comes most naturally. However, she is also learning to only vibrate the molecules in her fingers or hands or arms, seeking further control over this ability.

The cost of using her ability is that after, LACHESISM must ingest a large number of calories. This is to make up for the fact that she's essentially worked all her mitochondria into overtime. If she does not do this, LACHESISM can tend to get sluggish and will require sleep. So really, food and sleep are effective ways to stave off the after effects of using her ability to phase.

Outside of this, LACHESISM has decent control over her noise. When she's tracking children, she can keep it quiet, or can focus on different things to manipulate the way she comes off towards others. Reading is a much harder task for her, comparatively, once she tries to delve past the surface levels. In terms of danger level, LACHESISM is about a 2. Her mental stability is quite high, as is her control over her noise. To date, LACHESISM has not yet had a large spike in her control, though it tends to fluctuate into slightly higher than normal ranges when she is especially irritated about something. 75R/25L.

                      prompt.

"********." The word came out jagged and sharp, echoing in the empty back alley.

Spinning sideways, LACHESISM lashed out at the nearest thing with her foot, which so happened to be a one of two trash bins set up by the wall. It clattered loudly as it fell, the lid popping off, and both it and the bin rolling several inches before they came to a halt. "********," she said again, this time a little louder as she clenched her fists and pressed her lips together. It felt good to say. Vented her current frustration. No doubt her mother would have given her a disapproving look, but her mother was not, thankfully, there. Had not been there to hear the cusses that escaped from her lips all too easily. Had not been there to see her fail.

She huffed loudly in frustration and the fierce scowl on her face deepened as she pushed a hand through her hair, fingers raking over her scalp. How could she have let them get away? She'd been so close. She'd had them cornered. She'd had them. And then luck had decided to take mercy on them.

                      No. Not luck.

RUBATOSIS would have laughed at her for blaming chance. Him and his numerical precision, or whatever he called it. His ability to gauge chances and make predictions based on them. He'd have seen it coming, which was an even more frustrating thought, because for all his noise seemed to centre around ZENOSYNE and frustrated her, RUBATOSIS was good. Was what she wanted to be.

So, no. Not luck. LACHESISM would not allow herself to blame her failure on something as happenstance as that. It was her fault alone that they'd gotten away. She simply had not planned enough. Had not accounted for all potential scenarios. But how had she missed something like her target having made a couple of friends?

Someone had obviously not given her the right answers. Someone had lied.

She clicked her tongue against the back of her teeth and bit it to prevent another cuss from flying from her lips as she tried to regain control of her temper. Her noise must have felt to others as barbed as her current mood, if any could sense it. Not the kind of way she wanted to come off when she inevitably had to go back in to report her failure. "Failed," she muttered quiet to herself, hunching her shoulder as she turned from the alley. The word tasted bitter and heavy in her mouth. Stung her ego. When was the last time she had failed anything? Sixteen? Seventeen? It felt years ago. It had never felt as anything as monumental as this.

But then, this was a failure towards the Colarcio. Of course it mattered more.

And to think, back when the name had come to her earlier that month, she'd laughed at shrugged her shoulders, carefree. "Piece of cake," she'd said, at the time, all fluttery motion and challenging smiles. "Give me two weeks and they'll be finding themselves right at home in The Ribs."

Even if she was able to pick up the trail again, it'd take at least a few days. And even then, they'd cover their tracks better this time. A few days was generous. By the time she found them, two weeks would have long since past. Again, she ran her fingers through her hair, irritation evident in the lines of her body, even when she rejoined the crowd and let their dull buzz fill her ears. If anyone noticed she had been doing anything remotely suspicious only moments ago, they kept their heads down. It was that sort of area.

For a few blocks, she continued on, posture tense while she reviewed everything over and over in her head. Soon enough though, a weary sort of feeling began to take over. Made it hard to think. Settled heavy over her shoulders and between her eyes. The urge to fight her body's need for sustenance or sleep came. She could not afford it. Did not deserve it. But sense eventually won out as she turned a corner, fingers digging into her jacket pocket and snagging foil wrapper. Quickly, she unwrapped the hard candy and popped the round confection into her mouth, immediately rewarded by a tart sweetness as she rolled the candy over her tongue. It was not enough. Not by a long shot. However, it made her feel slightly better and chased the ache forming between her eyes away.

Navigating her way back to the better part of the city, LACHESISM boarded one of the emptier compartments of the hover tram and activated her Comet. "Thane, send OPIA a message for me," she began, waiting a moment before the holoscreen before her eyes went to her messages. "Plans have changed. Won't be coming tonight. Next week, maybe. I'll bring you something good. Promise." The words appeared one after the other, a nice little reminder that she'd ******** up, even if they did not directly state that. Still, she read them over twice before she finally responded to her Comet's prompt, allowing it to send the message off, then leaning into the pole she had propped herself against.

                      Food. Sleep.

Then she'd start again tomorrow. Find out who had given bad information and make them pay. Find her target and bring them in.

She could still recover from this.

All was not lost just yet.
