Welcome to Gaia! ::

More mysterious than any of your vampires, more sexy than any of those elves, more deadly than any of your werewolves, and more skilled than any swordsman (though in a much different sort of trade), the Whores. And how we deal with them.

Am I the only one who sees them often, especially in fantasy? Where have you read a damn good whore? Do you write whores? Would you like a whore? Something you need to know about a whore? What practical use can whores have in good literature? (And don't forget the manwhore). Anything you want to know about the whore in writing? Well, let's discuss!

I know I like the use of whores in The Song of Ice and Fire Series, and of course it is inevitable with so many horny men and brothels. (One of my favorite things [spoiler?] was when Daenerys freed the slaves in one area, and introduced them to free market, then everyone starts starving because the 'market for flesh' becomes cheap with an overabundance of whores and people start starving. Gotta love free market values).

Yeah, so this was sort of random, but I thought someone might find it interesting, and I thought this might be at the very least a different discussion than "grr, vampires and faeries" or "ya, vampires and faeries," or something like that.

And as to why I'd put deadly on that list at the beggining, I'm sure you can think of a good reason. ^.-

...Sorry, that was definetly random.
Personally, I've never written a prostitute, but I'm still young - there's plenty of time for me to delve into the darker elements of society.

But one has to write whores well. Prostitution for angst gets old so fast... as does prostitution to get somebody through high school or whatever.

Oh, I didn't just mean as something like the main character... I just meant that they were there. As an MC it might be a lot more problematic.

Oh, fair enough. xd
In the Lies of Locke Lamora there's whore that reminds him of his beloved. Which is why he can't use her when the time comes...
In the book I just finished, one of the MCs was a part-time, freelance whore. He only did it out of necessity, though (He's an incubus who has to feed on sexual energy).

I my fantasy series, there's a whorehouse in the village and the whore are regular customers at the magic shop, buying cures for diseases and birth-control.
Aha, the incubus! I was going to write a story about them once I found out more about them. They were basically excuses for women getting pregnant when they weren't supposed to. And the female equivolent, the succubus. Heh, if anyone needs a vampire subsitute I think they would work well, but I wouldn't force it to suffer that fate.

Remember in Catcher in The Rye how Holden gets Sunny the whore then just wants to talk to her instead of actually having sex? Also made a great contrast to the nun he talked to before.

Greedy Gekko

Who can forget the whore in Catch 22? She was a major charecter even though she didn't have a name. She was a well written whore.

This is kind of funny because I'm currently working on a mystery revolving around the murders of prostitutes. Whores are different by definiton, but the same concept applies. In this instance, the prostitutes are an integral part of my plot. They divulge exposition and set everything in motion.
I can't say I've ever written a prostitute as a main character, but it's assumed that they do exist in my world. I mean, my world is socially rather like the real world, and prostitution exists in the real world, so...yeah, they exist. The seedy side of life very much exists in my world.

As a writing-what-you-know challenge, I've done this. Knowing whores helps you to write them better. That's the best advice I can give. Other advice would be that generally, whores see themselves as normal people and that what they do is just their job and how they get paid. Badly written whores seem to be horny things that'd manglor your penor for any price. Also, remember that quite a lot of whores have a panderer or pimp they go back to at the end of the job.

I agree with Falcon about prostitution angst being banal. Avoid that. Unless it's an autobio or there's a huge twist, I probably won't read it.

Hallowed Phantom

I have one character who cheats on her husband when he becomes emotionally distraught and unwilling to come to bed with her. And she has quite a few boyfriends. Funnily enough, one of her sons is a whoremonger. Gee...wonder where he picked that up from?

Just for the record I'm not writing one. Or at least, if I do, it's completely independent of this thread.

And I'd never put in undue angst for anything.
Hunh, at some point my story mutated and I realized that if I were to use this current storyline/world, there would be a whole lot of brothels in my created country, what with its ruler's penchant for being a sexual sadist and going out and about to conquer and capture surrounding lands and taking lots of prisoners in as unwilling prostitutes.
I've not written a whore, to the best of my knowledge. You never know what my characters are doing behind my back though. My schizophrenic tendencies make for a fairly large chunk of sub-text even I don't know about.

DAMN YOU SUBTEXT! D<

Anyways, best written whore I've read? Phedre no Delaunay from the Kushiel's Legacy books. Whoredom, written in first person. For three novels, before she gets to take a rest for the current trilogy in the series.

Of course, she's not EXCLUSIVELY a whore. That wouldn't make for a very interesting book, unless you're into that sort of thing. [Erotic literature - Porn for intellectuals. Or not so intellectuals who just don't like pictures. Or people who want to hide the fact that they're looking at porn.]
She's also a spy [who does most of her spying by sleeping with the people she needs information from...] and a part-time hero of the kingdom [who happens to sleep with most everyone who dies because of her...].

You know what? Sex is awful scary. XD
