When is it appropriate to have a sex scene in a story and to what degree is it appropriate to descrip that scene? I think it should be entirly left out unless either you are writting a romance novel or it is vitally important to the story to have the scene. What do you think?
Also: what is your opinion on using words like 'member'? Does anyone think that if you can't write out the words you are to immature to write a sex scene?
JaenTalil had a good point so I have included his post here. Read and respond to this peopel!
EDIT; (4/7/07) Does the age of the characters having sex affect the appropriateness of the scene?

I was expecting more from this thread, but there wasn't really much worth noting after I abandoned it after page two. confused It seems the general consensus has been, "When it moves the story forward." and the thread hasn't progressed much beyond that. So maybe it's time to bring in some more questions (which, at this point, are more likely to be read by the thread regulars than anyone else).
What defines smut as opposed to sex-to-further-the-story?
I'm aware that there's the obvious answer of, "Smut is when sex IS the story.", but that's an obviously incomplete answer, because there are stories that aren't smut where sex is the main point, and stories that are considered smut but have sex as only a tangent to the story.
Of what use are sex scenes in exploring characterization, situations, and cultural/societal matters?
Almost no one in the whole thread has even mentioned this aspect, and it can be an extremely powerful driving force for a story. Sex scenes don't even have to be included! It can function on the level of being insinuated, such as exploring the ramifications of racism and inequality, with someone having sex with someone "socially unacceptable" even before the events of the story proper.
What about gender roles?
And this hasn't even been mentioned at all anywhere in the thread. Anyone who says gender roles aren't important or are non-existent in sexual situations is deluding themselves and should be summarily smacked. How should these be portrayed? How are they important to defining the characters? What ramifications do they have for the characters and the story?
