I seriously don't wanna be a cop about this, but Gaia's REALLY toeing the homage/parody line with some of these flairs. I also brought this up when the Litwick and Espeon flairs came out, but I didn't want to raise too much fuss since I recall around that time, there'd been an announcement about parody items needing to be 50% original. I'm not sure if these flairs are just
that overdue, but in case they aren't, I hope the artists are better about enforcing the 50% rule going forward.
Jibanyan is extremely borderline, but since two key parts of Jibanyan's design (his two flame-tipped tails and belly-warmer) are missing, you can argue this is a red cat with a coincidental likeness. You can't say that at all for Inuyasha, however. Between his red suikan, gold eyes, white hair, and dog ears, ALL of his key design features are present - this is 100% Inuyasha.
I'm not pointing this out for any self-righteous satisfaction, but out of genuine concern Gaia could get into some trouble. Sure, Gaia isn't nearly as big as it used to be, but some IP hounds don't give a damn how big you are, which I have personal experience with as a fanmerch artist.
Take these pins of mine:
They weren't tagged Moomin or Snufkin ANYWHERE, and I called them something like "white florist cow" and "wandering woods lad." I'm VERY small-time, but I still received an Etsy takedown as well as a C&D in my email from the Jansson family. Even after I explained I only make these pins in tiny batches of 10 a couple times a year, they insisted I stop immediately.
Also, I have an acquaintance with a line of Ghibli-inspired charms - all the designs were tweaked, but she still received takedowns for many of them. The first one they came for was her not-quite Totoro, which looked like this:
Even though the design wasn't a 1-to-1 (the chevrons on the tummy are changed, the ears are no longer arrow-shaped, and its pupils are much larger), an IP lawyer still deemed it was too similar.
The Cheeky Little Imp is a great demonstration of the changes needed to call a design "original," imo. It's unmistakably a mash of Kuromi and My Melody, but she doesn't look too much like either of her parents. I don't think Sanrio could reasonably come after this one.
