Welcome to Project REDLINE.

Within this project are experienced artists on and off Gaia who have generously offered their time to help new/inexperienced/curious artists of the Gaian community build and improve their skills. As official Project REDLINE art mentors, we will share with you our knowledge, creativity, and love for art. We encourage any and all artists to take advantage of this opportunity.

      Information

The concept of Project REDLINE was inspired by my desire to help the curious artists of Gaia; it is for those who have ever once asked an artist they admire and respect, "what tools do you use to draw", "how long have you been drawing", or "how do you create that certain magical effect that I've been wanting to master since forever". The idea also spawned from the 'Art Mentors Guild on Gaia' that I was and still am a part of, but has since lost activity. This project is also meant to be a more comprehensive and visually effective alternative to the 'price my art' threads here in the Pricings and Suggestions subforum. As well, without the support and encouragement of the mentors, this project certainly wouldn't exist today.

Selection of mentors is based on the artist's experiences or history on Gaia, skills (which includes their unique style and their versatility), personality, professionalism, and their suspected schedule during the time this project will be active. Invitations have been sent out to artists who I believe will have an interest in participating in this project. However, if you are an artist with some time on hand and would like to be a part of the team, feel free to contact me directly via PM's to discuss your opportunities. We're always on the look out for more mentors since another goal for this project is to recruit mentors from as many different areas as possible. Why? Because art is such a wide field and I sincerely wish to convince the Gaian community that there is so much more to it than the kawaii-desu art (for lack of better wording) that seems to have been over-populating the forums and underrating many talented artists for a while now.

      Studentship

You are officially recognized as a Project REDLINE student the moment you submit a request for any one of our services, excluding advice. We're opening this to the entire Gaian community to allow for more freedom and ease, and to encourage everyone to take part in this exciting project. Membership is, of course, free and open to anyone who is interested in learning from a mentor. (Don't be shy, we don't bite!) But, like their mentors, students must also be willing to give up some of their time to learn.

Project REDLINE Mentors are also welcome to request a lesson/service from another mentor, but will still have to fill out the appropriate forms, which will be explained in the next post. Should you have an questions, feel free to comment in the thread or contact me directly.

      Student Handbook

Mentors have been placed within categories representing their art specialty or art preference. This is to make it easier for Project REDLINE students to request a specific mentor and to emphasize that this entire project is simply a joint effort by artists, for artists. It is absolutely NOT a showcase of artists exercising their 'authority'. Please always keep in mind that art mentors are students too -- we're all in the process of developing our individual styles derived from different inspirations, but would also like to help others along on this journey. If curious, more information about our available mentors may be found in the Mentor Master List.

As this project depends on the volunteered efforts and time of the mentors, they are allowed to work at their own pace to help their students. Students who have a problem with this will be promptly expelled. I suggest you reconsider becoming a student if you aren't a big fan of patience; understand that we all have lives away from Gaia and that everyone has differing priorities. On another note, I'll personally make sure that I'm properly informed of any disputes or disagreements involving any student or mentor. I won't hesitate to reprehend anyone who chooses to be disrespectful, no matter the circumstance. The mentors have no idea how thankful I am for their help and I'd rather get run over by a car than let them feel uncomfortable. Just so you know.

Project REDLINE focuses on visual learning. The following is a list of ways through which a Project REDLINE mentor may help you, followed by their respective forms. You may only submit ONE request for ONE service at a time, unless you're seeking advice. Once your current request has been completed (which you can confirm via the Project Log), you may submit another. Likewise, our mentors will only accept one Livestream or P-Chat at a time (and unlimited Redlines of their choice). To save everyone's time, please consult the Mentor Master List for your desired mentor's availability.

Note that most of these lessons will be done online. For example, you may submit your scanned traditional sketch for a Redline, but the actual redlining by the mentor will be done digitally. Keep in mind that mentors are free to choose their own methods of tutoring and therefore may or may not offer any one of the services below. For Livestreams and P-Chats, please review your desired mentor's availability via the Mentors List (by Service) before submitting your request in the thread. When you are ready to submit a request, completely and correctly fill out the appropriate form below and post it in the thread for consideration.

      • Redlines

          n. An informal sketch over another person's piece of art to point out and correct flaws. Written notes and references may also be included on the side. The sketch is usually in red. Recommended for students with a good amount of drawing experience.

Requests for Redlines will be 'free for all's for all Project REDLINE mentors. This may also be more beneficial as students will be receiving multiple opinions from varying perspectives. When a request has been submitted in the thread, any mentor interested in taking on the challenge may do so by stating so in the thread before they begin redlining. Mentors, please be advised that this is an extremely important step, as I will be doing my best to ensure that every request receives feedback from at least one mentor.

All requests in progress will be recorded in the Project Log, which will always be kept up to date. Completed Redlines will then be permanently recorded in our Archive, which will serve as a resource and learning material for the entire art community.

[*] Specifics : (the reason for your request / what you need help with in particular, etc)
• Livestream Sessions

Live. Watch your mentor show you the tricks of the trade! Recommended for everyone, but especially helpful for students with little amount of drawing experience, or for those who are curious about different art programs and software. There's also a chatbox available for questions during the livestream.

Livestreams work in two ways and therefore have two different forms. The first form is for students, who may request a specific mentor from a specific category. If you need help deciding on a mentor, please consult the Mentor Master List. In this case, the student should have a clear idea of what they would like to see during the Livestream before submitting the request. Once a session has been requested, I will promptly inform the mentor, to which they will either accept or decline. If accepted, I will arrange a specific day and time, during which both parties will be online, for the requested Livestream. When the session begins, I will also post a detailed project-wide message in the thread so that other interested parties may attend. Requestors, please have the decency to stay until the very end.

Many mentors also use Livestream for personal purposes or just for fun. When this happens, they may use the second form to notify all members visiting the thread of it, so that anyone interested in a normal Livestream session may attend. Mentors may end the session whenever they wish, but when they do, they will again post a notification in the thread stating so, or strike out the contents of their earlier form.

Topic: (a short description of what you'll be doing during the Livestream; if you're not sure, simply state "Freestyle")
Link: (please provide a direct link to your livestream page for everyones' convenience)

      • P-Chat Sessions

Live. P-Chats are very similar to the Livestream sessions but the key difference is that you may draw WITH your mentor. Like Livestream, there is also a chatbox available for questions during the session. However, since P-Chats are public drawing boards, please be aware that there may be other users in the room. Recommended for everyone, but P-Chat drawing software may take some time to get used to for first-time users.

First of all, know that in order to be able to request for this service, both the student and the mentor must have an account on the P-Chat website. We will be using Niko's Paintchat, as it is the most popular and the most reliable (in my opinion, at least). If you have any more questions about how P-Chat works, feel free to post it in the thread using the Advice form. Should you run into any problems while in the P-Chat, you may contact Nerpin, one of our resident mentors who also happens to be an admin at Niko's (known as "Z!" there).

Due to their nature, P-Chat requests will work a bit differently than Livestreams. I have no wish to override the server of any p-chat website by the mass flock of Gaia users, that's just not cool. Therefore, P-Chat sessions will only occur on a private one-to-one basis between the student and the mentor. Subsequently, there will only be one form students may use to request a P-Chat from their desired mentor. Again, students should already have a topic in mind before filling out a form. Once a request has been submitted in the thread, I will immediately inform the mentor. If they accept, I will again organize a day and time during which both parties are online, but there will be no project-wide notifications about this. In the Project Log, the request will be recorded under a certain day, but no time will be specified -- this will only be made known to the student, the mentor, and myself. For the mentor's sake, I will do my best to group multiple students together should their requested topics happen to overlap.

[*] Other : (anything else you'd like us to know)
• Advice

Comprehensive constructive criticism, whether it relates to the mentor's specialty, art in general, gaia art trends and economics, or anything else the mentor may choose to disclose.

This type of request can be answered by anyone, as long as the information given is accurate. Essentially, whoever sees the question first can answer, but whereas users may or may not put the effort into posting a reply, a mentor will always do so. We will also do our best to answer your question as quickly as possible. The reason why there's a form when it seems unnecessary is because we don't want any questions to be overlooked, in case the thread ever becomes crowded. Feel free to ask anything and as many questions as you'd like. You may also direct your question to a specific mentor, if applicable. Popular questions and their answers will be placed in our FAQ.

      Student Manual

There are a total of 5 mentor categories with which the mentors have associated themselves. This is simply for organizational purposes so as to make it easier for the students to request for services (particularly Livestreams and P-Chats) from specific mentors. Here, I have provided two lists with the convenience of the students in mind -- mentors by category and by the types of services they offer. I encourage you look through the entire list if this is your first visit, as we have an amazing selection of mentors, each with their own unique style and artistic approach. Every mentor has something different to offer and finding the right ones for you may just be the funnest part of this entire project. (:

Once you become a regular visitor, you may find it more reasonable to use CTRL+F. Note that additional mentors may be included in the future, as we're always on the lookout for more. If at any time you come across an unfamiliar name, you may find more information about the mentor on the Mentor Master List, where links to every mentor's gallery and Mentor Card can be found.

"Can Project REDLINE mentors also be students?"

Yes, of course! As mentioned previously, we're all students underneath it all. Art is not an entity easily tamed or perfected, as I'm sure every artist understands. Therefore, anyone who submits a request to P:R is automatically acknowledged as a student. If a mentor is interested in requesting a service from another, he or she simply needs to fill out the appropriate form(s) and submit them in the thread. There are no restrictions, meaning that they may submit a Redlines Request, a Livestream Request, a P-Chat Request or even Advice. Project REDLINE is just one big team, so let's all share and support each other as much as we can.

"I'm interested in becoming a Project REDLINE Mentor, what do I do?"

Fantastic! To submit a mentor application, simply send me a PM stating your interest, along with some samples of your art or a link to your gallery, and what you think you can offer to our students. Resumes are not required, but it is optional. We're always on the look out for more mentors as we have many categories to fill and possibly more on the way. Responses are typically sent within a week of receiving the application, although it may take longer (ie, due to con season in the summer months), so please be patient with us!

      "How are Mentor Applications evaluated?"

If you're curious, I discuss potential mentors with members of the P:R Board, which really just consists of the mentors who I originally sent mentor invitations to. Everyone on the Board have been artists (on and off gaia) for many, many years, therefore having gained wisdom from varying experiences throughout their career. For example, I've studied art and art history and been a Freelance Artist, marketing and selling my skills, for over 8 years; Woefulinfinity works as a 3-D, technical artist at DreamWorks Animation and spends her after-hours learning and teaching the solid foundations required by all professional industry illustrators; Finni, an artist under the employment of Gaia Interactive Inc., has dabbled in almost everything art related; and Bokumo, a recently graduated art student specializing in Graphics & Design, has been such an endless source of support and inspiration to me, I'm beyond honoured. This is just to name a few, but if it isn't obvious already, I value every Board Member's opinions greatly. Every one of them deserves my respect and admiration and it is their wisdom and my research on the potential mentors (as explained in the first post) that helps me make the final decision.

"If I am not a user of Gaia Online, may I still ask for an art critique?"

Yes, you definitely may! If you're not a Gaia user and just came upon our tumblr / Project Archive one day and would still like to submit a Redlines request, simply submit one to us via our askbox on tumblr. However, note that there will be a limited number of mentors who will be able to complete your request. It is likely that I will be doing the Redline in this case, unless another mentor expresses their interest or, if I'm unavailable, I will ask another available mentor. Requests via tumblr are NOT free for all's and therefore only one Redline will be done for each request. Note that we will NOT be accepting Livestream and P-Chat requests in this way.

Click the link below to go to our Official Project Archive, currently being hosted on tumblr.com. The Archive includes all finished Redlines, Advice, General Tutorials, and more. It was originally been hosted on Gaia, but for the convenience of the students, the mentors, and myself, it was moved indefinitely to tumblr.

The relocation has made it much easier and quicker for everyone to browse through our archive for resources on specific subjects or areas via unique "tags". For example, if one requires help with how to draw the general structure of the human hand, he or she may search for the "hand" tag and a list of relevant sources will appear. Visitors may also search for all the redlines, tutorials, or advice done by a specific mentor, by typing in the mentor's Gaia username in the searchbar. Likewise, students who wish to review the help they received for any of their past requests may do so by searching for their own Gaia username. This is especially helpful for those who have accidentally lost their critiques.

The mentors and I will try our best to keep the Archive as up to date as possible, so feel free to follow us on there if you own a tumblr account of your own. Note that although there is a mentor list on there, it is NOT our Mentor Masterlist. The users on that list only include the mentors who have a tumblr account themselves.

GENERAL UPDATE
// Jan 5, 2013

Lots of points to cover so will use point form to be concise!

  • Everything before this post has been updated onto the front page, our archive on tumblr, and my own personal records.
  • I'm aware that some mentors still require their Mentor ID, and I'll be distributing these within the next few days. Mentor Applications which have been sent to me will also be addressed during this process.
  • Graphics section for Project REDLINE is a WIP but will be up and running as soon as possible.
  • The Mentors Masterlist is to be updated soon. Mentors may be contacted to facilitate this. I'm also considering organizing mentors into "Full-time" (throughout the year) / "Part-time" (during school breaks only). Mentors, please let me know if this would be helpful to you.
  • New Livestream requests have been sent in; I will be contacting the mentors who have been requested in the Project Log soon and students who sent in the requests should look out for a PM from me in the near future.
  • I am also thinking of including a "Guestbook" of sorts on our Archive @tumblr or on Gaia (somehow) so that students can thank their mentors and perhaps even provide useful suggestions / inspirations to their fellow students. Mentors & Students, please let me know what you think about this.
  • The last thing I'd like to do is edit some content on the front page, but this may take a while.

  • + Mentors, please address these questions which have been sent in via our Archive on tumblr:
    Quote:
"Tips on drawing lips like how to shade or paint them.. I always have troubles with them."
    Quote:
"Hello! I have a lot of troubble with profile view for both female and male characters, the collar bone and chest causes me a lot of problems in this view as well as face proportion, could i get some advice?"
    Quote:
"Are there any tips you can give for making the switch from traditional to digital art? In particular drawing digitally, and how one my go about getting bolder with their lines and hand-eye coordination?"

But finally, ~

Please welcome to the team, our newly recruited P:R mentors!
Thank you all for your interest, for taking the time to apply and most of all, for your unbelievable patience during these last few busy months. <3
I hope you'll have the best of time here with the rest of the team, as well as with your future students!

...discussing the possibility of a new mentor category: Architecture / Backgrounds
    • piperlime (Colour/Painting, Portraits, Pixels)
    • Stariaria (Character Composition)
    • amicableAggressor (Colour/Painting)

Updates to the front pages will be made accordingly once the appropriate forms have been sent back to me and new Mentor ID Cards have been distributed. However, as of this moment, the new mentors are free to start mentoring our current students! 8D Might I interest you in the numerous Redline requests listed under the Project LOG? wink

And if you haven't already, I would recommend reading through the entire front page, which details all you need to about our ambitious Project. If you have any further questions, please feel free to send me a message any time~ Or, if you'd prefer, you can post a comment in the thread so that the senior mentors can share their opinion with you. <3

More specifically, I will be

  • merging student masterlist + archive together since everything can now be found via the search function at our archive; will also be providing the reasons why the changes were made
  • changing the layout of the mentor masterlist to make it smoother and cleaner while also performing some updates there (ie; adding in all P:R mentors up to this point, including mysterious #12 lol + changing mentor statuses where appropriate, etc)
  • finally adding in some content to our Student FAQ's lol

I will also be handing out all mentor ID cards to those mentors who have yet to receive theirs by tonight.

NEW FEATURE!! - May 25, 2012

Hey everyone!
I'll be migrating our Project Archive to HERE within the next few days. There were several reasons for this move:

- This will really live up to our motto of visual learning!
- This feature will make it quick and easy for the mentors to upload their learning materials for the students and so, everything will always be up to date.
- It will also be less work for me for periods when I am busy irl or when I can't make it to a computer.
- Mentors can also select better tags as they see fit, AND as many as they want without cramming everything into a post like what we're doing now. XD
- Students can more easily search the tags they want (and by mentor name or their own name) and browse through our archive for tips and tricks or find their own requests (as long as Tumblr is not being a poophead =v=;d).
- Essentially, I am trying to save everyone's time. @u@d ...and actually put my coding skills to use lmao
- It also looks cooler lol

Mentors, if you approve of this idea, I will go through with it immediately. If not, let me know and we can keep our current Project Archive as it is. :> When posting your redlines/livestreams/advice in the future, please follow the format of the examples I will be posting within the next few days using the materials we currently have (pay particular attention to tags). The only difference for the future is that you will not need to post your own names in the posts, I am just doing it for the first few examples to give credit where it is due. <3
EDIT: Note that you will still have to quote your students to let them know when you finish their request, but basically, anything that you were planning to place in the post may be placed in the new archive above. 8D

I will be inviting the mentors to become site authors soon, so if you know that I do not have your email as a form of off-gaia contact, please send me it. (:
Also, feel free to ask me any questions if you need more clarifications!

Everyone, please keep in mind that we are still in our "testing phase" so I will be making more improvements to the Project as we go. Thanks for your understanding! ^u^d
