The Species:
__________________
These are the
various species of crabs that are for sale in the shop.
First: Coenobita clypeatus.
Called the
Purple Pincer, or
PP for short, these guys are Carribean Land Hermit Crabs. They're one of the two most-common hermit crabs sold in the United States. So if you walked by a mall stand filled with hermits, they were probably Purple Pincers.
Second: Coenobita compressus.
Called the
Ecuadorian hermit, or just plain
E. These guys have narrower eyes than the Purple Pincers, and are partners in sharing the 'most-commonly sold in America' title. E's are just mad about exploring. When you bring yours home from the pet store, they'll be the first to start racing around.
Third: Coenobita perlatus.
The ever-popular
Strawberry hermit crab. These sweeties are a bright, bright red, and their bumps show up very prominantly. Beware, though. Strawberries are very stubborn, and rather rough on crabitats, as they have a tendancy move around all the objects in the tank at night. At the store these'll generally be the biggest guys there.
Fourth: Coenobita rugosus.
Called
Ruggies, or
rugs, this type of hermit crab comes in a wide variety of colors. Ruggies are sweet tempered and inquisitive.. and a bit more rare than 'pincers or E's.
Fifth: Coenobita cavipe.
Cavipes, or
cavs, and considered some of the shyest hermits around. Often coming in oranges and purples, mixed with the usual brown tints, these guys are awfully pretty.
Sixth: Coenobita brevimanus.
Indonesian, or
Indo hermit crabs are most often a purple-lavender color. These guys are almost always mistaken for PP's at first glace because of their similar coloring (I've drawn a very far-out specimen for the shop. ;D). Indo's are delicate, beautiful, and very fragile. They're some of the touchiest when it comes to captivity.
________________
Hermit crabs come in
medium or
mini here at Lester's. Well, with exception of Strawberries. You'll only find them in
medium.
Every batch will offer Purple Pincers or Ecuadorians, along with one of the rarer varieties. (:
