This is a non-profit event, the artists were paid in USD, and 60% of gold made goes to the Breedable/Changing Questing Guild to assist other local B/C Questers. The other 40% is distributed to promote future shop events which go right back to you. We greatly appreciate your stopping by and reading, participating, or even just chatting. _____We are here today to attract badly needed attention to the disease known as Breast Cancer. This form of cancer has a high chance of affecting every single female at least one point in their life. I know that if you haven't been a victim, you know someone who has. We all welcome you here today to open your eyes and to make a single effort forward, to unite and take into our lives the responsibility we have towards our sisters, mothers, aunts, and beloveds.

Breast Cancer Facts (taken from About: Women`s Health)

• An estimated 182,800 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2000.
  
• Approximately 42,200 deaths will occur in women from breast cancer in 2000.
  
• One in eight women or 12.6% of all women will get breast cancer in her lifetime.
  
• Breast cancer risk increases with age and every woman is at risk.
  
• Every 13 minutes a woman dies of breast cancer.
  
• Seventy-seven percent of women with breast cancer are over 50.
  
• Approximately 1400 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in men in 2000 and 400 of those men will die.
  
• More than 1.7 million women who have had breast cancer are still alive in the United States.
  
• Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 15 and 54, and the second cause of cancer death in women 55 to 74.
  
• Seventy-one percent of black women diagnosed with breast cancer experience a five-year survival rate, while eighty-six percent of white women experience five-year survival.
  
• The first sign of breast cancer usually shows up on a woman's mammogram before it can be felt or any other symptoms are present.
  
• Risks for breast cancer include a family history, atypical hyperplasia, delaying pregnancy until after age 30 or never becoming pregnant, early menstruation (before age 12), late menopause (after age 55), current use or use in the last ten years of oral contraceptives, and daily consumption of alcohol.
  
• Early detection of breast cancer, through monthly breast self-exam and particularly yearly mammography after age 40, offers the best chance for survival.
  
• Ninety-six percent of women who find and treat breast cancer early will be cancer-free after five years.
  
• Over eighty percent of breast lumps are not cancerous, but benign such as fibrocystic breast disease.
  
• Oral contraceptives may cause a slight increase in breast cancer risk; however 10 years after discontinuing use of oral contraceptives the risk is the same as for women who never used the pill.
  
• Estrogen replacement therapy for over 5 years slightly increases breast cancer risk; however the increased risk appears to disappear 5-10 years after discontinuing the use of estrogen replacement therapy.
  
• You are never too young to develop breast cancer! Breast Self-Exam should begin by the age of twenty.

_____This is a harsh reality that we have to face every single day, that sometimes no matter how healthy you are, or someone you loves is, it can be taken away in a matter of minutes between the examination and the diagnosis. Some women are strong enough and lucky enough to become survivors, but then others cannot afford medical care, or simply are unable to fight. These women become martyrs to one of the many causes that need to be cured. Whether they lived or died, they are our heroines. There is hope as we've seen several times. Sometimes it's not breast cancer, sometimes we catch it early enough, sometimes we survive. However, we need to make an effort to help those who didn't catch it early on, who may not survive, and we must pull together to fight this disease and find a cure to end the continuation of yet another deadly cancer.

_____Welcome to the Vale of Earth Auction post. This is a very special auction as the art was done by Luciole. This Vale is based upon the plant Pink Rose and was inspired by a young woman who contracted Breast Cancer at the age of 15. The name of the original artwork created for her is "Hope", but you will have the option of naming her anything you like along with the rare alignment "Heaven". You will receive her at her Teenager stage, and she will grow into the previewed Adult stage at your discretion and completion of growth form. You will also receive the un-watermarked full-version of each artwork at appropriate growth, you will not receive the print version since you don't own the copyrights (I do, since I paid $155 each) and we're selling it to get donations for the Komen Foundation, sorry!

_____The story of the Pink Rose is simple, and her background is the following. There was a young researcher who worked at the Vale over 20 years ago. She raised her sprout through every stage with rocketing success. The young woman's name was Researcher Esperanza Adelita Medina, and she contracted Breast Cancer after fifteen years of working at the Vale. Esperanza continued her research with the Rose while trying to undergo treatment, but her extended hours caught up with her and she eventually died, having pushed herself to the limit trying to keep the little rose girl protected from her illness. After Researcher Medina died the Vale was taken into custody, and placed into a suspended animation. Five years later her pod has been brought out and will be given to the most worthy Researcher of the purest Vale currently in the Laboratories. She has no idea why Esperanza disappeared, how long it has been, and why she was placed into comatose. You as her new Researcher must explain to her, comfort her, and become her new bond.

Over the centuries roses and floral arrangements of different shades of roses symbolize a diverse range of passions. "The rose is the most beautiful of all flowers" and what adds to their beauty is their immense capability to take possession of viewer's imagination and thoughts. Pink roses mean gentility and grace. In the Talmud, it is written that only pink roses would be allowed to blossom in Jerusalem, and thus they came to symbolize paradise. Over the centuries, roses with varying shades of Pink have expressed a wide range of heartfelt sentiments and feelings. Pink Rose stands for grace and lesser feelings of love. Where as Dark Pink signifies gratitude and Light Pink conveys admiration and sympathy. As a presence in a corner of a room with its aroma, gentle pink color and shape a pink rose can make everything else look absolutely small in comparison.

Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that grows in one or both of the breasts. Breast cancer usually develops in the ducts or lobules of the breast.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women (after lung cancer). Although African-American women have a slightly lower incidence of breast cancer after age 40 than white women, they have a slightly higher incidence rate of breast cancer before age 40. However, African-American women are more likely to die from breast cancer at every age. Breast cancer is much less common in males. In 2005, it's estimated that about 1,690 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the US.

Types of breast cancer

_____There are several different types of breast cancer that can be divided into two main categories — noninvasive cancers and invasive cancers. Noninvasive cancer may also be called carcinoma in situ. Noninvasive breast cancers are confined to the ducts or lobules and they do not spread to surrounding tissues. The two types of noninvasive breast cancers are ductal carcinoma in situ (referred to as DCIS) and lobular carcinoma in situ (referred to as LCIS).


• Noninvasive breast cancer. There will be approximately 58,490 new cases of noninvasive breast cancer in the US in 2005. Of these, 85% will be DCIS. In DCIS, the cancer cells are found only in the milk duct of the breast. If DCIS is not treated, it may progress to invasive cancer.
  
  _____In LCIS, the abnormal cells are found only in the lobules of the breast. Unlike DCIS, LCIS is not considered to be a cancer. It is more like a warning sign of increased risk of developing an invasive breast cancer in the same or opposite breast. While LCIS is a risk factor for invasive cancer, it doesn't actually develop into invasive breast cancer in many women.
  
  
• Invasive breast cancer. There will be approximately 211,240 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women in the US in 2005. Invasive or infiltrating breast cancers penetrate through normal breast tissue (such as the ducts and lobules) and invade surrounding areas. They are more serious than noninvasive cancers because they can spread to other parts of the body, such as the bones, liver, lungs, and brain.
  
  _____There are several kinds of invasive breast cancers. The most common type is invasive ductal carcinoma, which appears in the ducts and accounts for about 80% of all breast cancer cases. There are differences in the various types of invasive breast cancer, but the treatment options are similar for all of them.

_____You've been diagnosed, or you know someone who has. This is the time doctors start putting forward solutions. Radiation Therapy, Surgery, Chemotherapy or even Hormonal Treatment. Every single one has a certain amount of repercussions, but you need to make the decision best for you, and for all those who are supporters, understand their choice and be patient with it. As much as you may love or care for them, it is only their choice as to what to do with their body. For the parent of an underaged victim, please listen to your child. Though you may have power over what treatment is given to your daughter (or even son), please allow them to make an informed decision of their own. They need to fight it with all of their heart, and they need you to believe they can do it too.

For comfort, and strength, read Chicken Soup for the Breast Cancer Patient's Soul. The remarkable stories, and losses will help you to view almost the same experience through someone else's eyes and will help you deal with everything that is going on.

_____You or the person you love will need to undergo therapy, extensive treatment, and continue to go back to check for recurrence and development. Help them with whatever they may need, lend them an ear, or a shoulder. Give them the courage to face things head on and to never give up, because sometimes it's never too late and there are such things are miracles. For the patient, keep a strong upper lip, but never be afraid to cry or let things out. Letting it build up can aid to sickness and might weaken you in your fight against the disease. Inward manifestation of emotions can lead to additional stress and mental sickness. Appreciate those who love you, and love them in return.

"What causes breast cancer?" It’s a question women want a straight answer to. Unfortunately, the field of breast cancer research moves so fast—and the news media even faster—that it can seem that all women get is scientific sidestepping rather than good, solid information they can use.

This section of About Breast Cancer helps cut through the confusion by describing the many known risk factors for breast cancer—from those that have a large effect on risk (such as getting older, having a strong family history and having carcinoma in situ) to those that have a small effect on risk (such as being tall and eating an unhealthy diet). Also included are tips for lowering risk, information on genetic mutations (including genetic testing) and options like tamoxifen for women at higher risk.

• Being female.
  
• Getting older.
  
• Inherited genetic mutations.
  
• Carcinoma in situ.
  
• Family history of breast, ovarian or prostate cancer.
  
• High breast density on mammogram.
  
• Radiation exposure in youth.
  
• Benign breast disease (hyperplasia).
  
• High levels of estrogen in the blood.
  
• Personal history of breast cancer.
  
• Menopause at age 55 or older.
  
• Not having children or having first child after age 30.
  
• High bone density.
  
• Overweight/weight gain.
  
• High socioeconomic status.
  
• Ashkenazi Jewish heritage.
  
• Drinking alcohol.
  
• Lack of exercise.
  
• Postmenopausal hormone use.
  
• First period before age 12.
  
• Current or recent use of birth control pills.
  
• Being tall.
  
• Not breastfeeding.

There is no sure way to avoid breast cancer. Some healthy lifestyle choices, however, may help lower the risk of the disease and have the added bonus of cutting the risk of heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and osteoporosis. Everyone should try to:

• Be physically active.
  
• Maintain a healthy weight.
  
• Cut down on "bad" fats (saturated and trans fats), and consume more "good" fats (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, like olive and canola oil).
  
• Take a daily multivitamin with folic acid (often called folate on nutrition labels).
  
• Limit alcohol intake to less than one alcoholic drink a day. (Regular drinkers should try to get adequate folic acid, either through a multivitamin or rich food sources like oranges, orange juice or fortified breakfast cereals.)
  
• Choose to breastfeed children instead of formula feeding them if possible.

_____When my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer... everything changed. I remember her crying a lot, and thanking god she wasnt throwing up from chemotherapy treatment. The hardest thing for her was shaving her head though, but she felt she had to because her hair was falling out so much that it looked and felt bad. There were some really shaky times when we werent sure how we were going to make ends meet monitary wise, because the doctors bills were really expensive, and my mom couldnt work as much because she was sick so often. The doctors told us 6 months ago that they would never used the word 'cured' to describe her case, but now its present day and there isnt any sign of cancer in her system. However, it still affects us because she contracted lymphedema as a sign affect of treatment (its where fluid backs up in her arm, and swells it painfully). She's still having a hard time with it, and were still getting through everything, but its good to know that she's alright for now. (My mother is a two year survivor)

_____I remember when my grandmother got breast cancer. We have a rather large family, and we were all shocked when we heard the news...probably because she was the strongest of all of us. It's funny how sometimes even healthy people get it. Anyway, there were several times we didn't think she'd make it. Also in the process of either chemo or radiation treatment, she became burned badly by it. However, my grandma never gave up hope, and was always strong. She worked while she had breast cancer, probably to try and keep her mind off of it. I'm happy to say it's been almost five years since she got it.
_____Today she is still healthy, and now even stronger than before (I think so, atleast). She's slowly gaining all of her weight back, and her hair has also come back in (has for a few years now). It seems like through all of that pain though, it kept us closer together. Our family has had arguments in the past few years, but I think this year we are really appriciating what we all have. That makes me extreamly happy. I thank god a lot for letting us keep her awhile longer, though I probably should thank him more often than I do. I also hope that none of us in the family get it, and that she stays cancer-free...because grandma said if it came back she wouldn't do the chemotherapy and radation treatment(s) again. It changes everything--in your life and others.
