Kanon Haruna

The forest stretched on beyond the senses of even the strongest elemental. Kanon could feel the over pouring energy from the plant life around him as he walked through the forest. The old and new trees were beckoning him to wander further into the area, but they did nothing to help him find the elusive Peryton clan in the area. It was mostly through rumors that he heard the forest housed the clan he was looking for, so he wasn't completely certain he would find what he was looking for.

Still, the young celestial continued to wander through the forest, traveling through the area and attempting to carefully search for the people. There had been no true clue for where he could actually find them, and it was much harder for him to find the clan when he was one person. Perhaps it would have been easier for predators to find them as they traveled in groups, but he was struggling to comb through the forest. Kanon knew he would live for centuries more, but for once, he was in a hurry to reach his goal, to complete his journey once and for all. He'd already been searching for a century now, wandering through forest, through mountains, through even the valleys between volcanic mountains. Not even chasing the most bewildering of rumors could bring the celestial closer to breaking the curse on his hands.

Since he was first cursed, the blackness in his fingers had spread to his palms, up of his forearms, and started to cover his shoulders. His nails had grown long and needed regular care in order to prevent them from growing dangerously sharp. Regularly, the celestial needed to replace his gloves when he accidentally ripped right through the cloth he was using, and the holes had been mended a few times too many. While the transformation remained mostly physical, Kanon was growing worried as the black skin seemed to only spread further the longer it took for him to find a solution. He remained on the move, searching for a way to cure him, finding possible solutions, only for it to turn out out to be a dead end.

He sighed as he wondered if he should take a break a little earlier that evening than usual. Perhaps, he should start searching for berries to make a meal out of, and maybe hunt down a rabbit that he could cook. Kanon wasn't particularly fond of meat, but he, also, couldn't sustain himself on purely berries, roots, and other vegetation. Traveling far and wide took a lot more energy than he was used to expending before his life as a nomad began. He was forced to indulge in the occasional meat to bring himself more energy to continue on his weary journey.

As he was continued to walk between the trees, he could hear a distant sound of someone in distress and a few jeering cries and growls. If there wasn't a distinctly sentient sound to it, he would have dismissed it as animals without interfering with one animal trying to get a meal. Kanon picked up his speed until he was running towards the sound, feeling a little anxious about what sort of predators and hapless creature were lurking in the forest. The celestial was almost gliding over the forest floor as he hurried closer to the sound, bursting out from some particularly dense foliage only to see some predators circling a poor Peryton.

The small group of three had the head of a wild cat, except their mouths were significantly larger than any wild cat he had seen. They were towering over the poor creature that seemed to have been knocked unconscious by the way it had stopped moving. Kanon didn't have the time to consider that these wild cats with the scaly body of a human were several heads taller than im. He rushed over, pulling out his sword and just barely managing to slide in between the claw heading down on the unconscious creature. Blocking and pushing, he quickly delivered a deep cut to the chest before defending himself from one of the other creatures. Since he had no wish to kill anyone, he made sure none of his cuts were fatal, but he delivered the message that they should definitely back off before he was forced to actually kill them. Kanon watched as the bleeding creatures skulked off back to their homes, leaving a trail of blood behind them. With the blood sure to attract attention soon, he looked down at the unconscious male by his feet.

He was definitely a male Peryton which meant the rumors were not completely unfounded. Feeling a little hopeful now, he leaned down and swept up the unconscious figure, throwing him over his shoulder to keep one hand free just in case. Carrying his burden like a sack, Kanon found a nice clearing to place him down before he pulled out his own blanket to carefully tuck the male in. The spot he picked was near a river so he could help clean what cuts he could see. Unwrapping the bundle he had tied to his back, he took the one towel he had and wet it in the river, so he could carefully wipe away the blood and debris that had gotten on the wounds. While waiting for the Peryton to wake up, he gathered some plant life he recognized had healing properties and pressed it against what cuts he could see on the male. He realized, after making sure there were no serious injuries, that the male had his wings clipped and he wondered if it was done by the creatures they ran into earlier. Finding the notion a little too far fetched, he gathered some edible mushrooms, berries, leaves, and wild vegetation to wait out the unconscious male. He cleaned them thoroughly with the small basket he had in his package, rolling up his incredibly long sleeves and taking off his gloves to clean them. Once they were clean, he placed the gloves back on and sat by the body to wait.

tab The peryton stirred, if only to curl up to preserve heat. The blanket was welcome, but simply not enough for the thin man to sleep comfortably. His large, feathered wings bent instinctively around his body, before a sharp pain alarmed him, interrupting his rest. His pale green eyes adjusted to the darkness as he attempted to determine his location and state of being. With breath hitched in his throat, he made no sound when he found Kanon close by, recoiling into the blanket instead. Deciding to keep silent and avoid bringing attention to himself, he evaluated his wounds, eyes shut and focused on the source of his pains. If the stranger had offered him a blanket, he might not have posed an immediate threat, so sorting himself out took precedence.

He concluded that the majority of his injuries took place along the lower half of his wings and along his limbs, but a particularly unnerving pain settled by his forehead. His head didn't feel any lighter, so his horns and their adornments must have been intact, he decided, but he might have landed pretty hard to be suffering from this sort of headache.

Akakios belonged to a tribe of peryton, whom migrated north from southern marshlands centuries before when conditions became impossible to endure. Here, they were close to distant relatives, nearly black in color, while their own feathers grew with a snowlike incandescence. Entirely opposite in appearance and hobbies, they worked well living in such close proximity, a benefit to both tribes' cultures and livelihoods. Despite interbreeding over the generations, Akakios displayed pure, bright feathers, and tall, wiry horns; along with inherent frailty, not benefiting from the hereditary sturdiness of his father's bloodline. This proved a number of complications today, while he stuck out to anything willing to give chase for a meal, and again when being knocked around marred his body and broke many feathers. The loss of blood was enough to make the fragile man feel even more incapable.

His wings, he worried, were too damaged to grow in properly. It would take specialized care to ensure the new feathers came in straight and without issue. Akakios couldn't bring himself to ask the archdruid, the white peryton leader, for help; as he had broken the rules and slipped out again. These injuries were his own fault, but even two centuries of guidelines did not make being scolded any less humiliating. The peryton inwardly hoped he could rely on his father to aid him, while keeping it a secret; a near impossible task as the man was the archdruid's closest assistant.

Dwelling over how he would face this mess, the white peryton let out a distressed whimper, pressing his forehead to the blanket in his hands. Akakios was able to pick up the scent of the stranger that lent it to him, finding it earthy and almost welcoming. It wasn't too warm, but it felt well cared for. Recalling the noise that escaped him, the peryton hesitantly looked again in Kanon's direction, curious to see if he'd been noticed.

The man's voice caught in his throat, but he managed to speak, tone low and reserved. "Who are you?" he asked in his native language before stopping, and speaking in a language more common, one he had learned from those who visit their city. "What do you want with me?" The feathered man attempted to sit up, wincing when pressure was applied to his arm and moving his wings became too much, the blanket falling from his upper half. The cool air made him aware then of his wounds that were tended to.

Kanon Haruna

The several long hours it took for the Peryton to wake up was a little worrying. The sun was beginning to set, and there were no signs of the injured creature stirring from his unconscious state. Kanon didn’t dare to wander off far in concern that something would attack again or the creature would be gone when he came back. He gathered some nearby sticks and thicker branch that was cracked in the middle. They would need a fire if the Peryton did not wake up soon. His armful of kindle was placed not too far from the unconscious male before he collected some more plants, only finding a few that would help numb wounds.

Working methodically, he used the one small wooden bowl he had to mash up the plants to create a paste that could be applied. He had no idea where the male’s home was where he could receive care. Kanon knew he would have to do his best to nurse the Peryton for a few hours, and he placed some more of the paste in whatever areas he could find although it was a very thin layer. The celestial creature sighed as he washed his bowl and stuck a few berries into his mouth.

In the end, he had only gotten so far as to make a fire pit and arranging the kindle before he realized his temporary companion was awake. He froze for only a moment before going back to arranging the sticks to his liking and then using a little basic fire magic to light it up. Kanon used a longer one to poke the fire a little as it started to crackle, allowing him to place the skewered mushrooms on top of the whole arrangement to cook. While he was near desperate for the help of the Peryton’s people, he didn’t want to scare the poor injured creature. It was only when his companion spoke that he turned to acknowledge that he was awake.

Staying a little further from the other male, Kanon smiled slightly as he held up his hands a little to indicate he didn't intend to harm the male. "I saw you being attacked, so I just wanted to help you." The celestial glanced at the fire before looking back at his companion, wondering if it would startle the male too much to offer him some water. "How are you feeling? You hit your head pretty hard. Are you feeling dizzy?"

Slowly, he picked up the bowl that he had filled with water and handed it to the male. "Be careful with the medicine I put on you. It should keep any infections at bay." He could still smell the slightly medicinal herbs from his own fingertips even through his black gloves. The smell was strong enough and familiar enough to anyone who made their medicines from scratch. Kanon had the benefit of being connected to the Earth and knowledgeable of the many plants from years of studying flora. This made his predicament a little more ironic since no plant could help him now.

tab Hesitating a moment, Akakios looked the stranger over, determining that he did not readily appear to be a threat to himself, if appearances meant much at all. He then looked over his arms, pulling back the belled sleeves to do so. "Ah...thank you," the peryton spoke softly, noting the skill in the aid he'd received. It reminded him of his father's work. "I think I am alright. I mean, I will be. At the very least, I will be once I am home, if I could get back there." With a frown, he moved his wing to ascertain the damage, though his hand gripped the blanket at his side as he had. The feathers we far too damaged to be effective. "Walking is so impractical," he whined, defeated by the realization he could not fly the distance.

The feathered man lowered his head, feeling utterly burdensome. "Would it be too much of a bother to request you escort me, stranger? You've already done so much, saving my life and tending to these injuries, but I... I could not defeat anything that could come for me, regardless of my condition. I suppose that's already been proven." His melancholic tone floated on, though he could not bring himself to meet Kanon's gaze as he asked his favor as if ashamed to be doing so.

"Though, I promise I will repay you. If money is not of interest, let me know what is. If you would be more comfortable waiting until sunrise, I would understand." Their location hadn't seemed too obvious, it could potentially be advantageous to remain where they were awhile. As well, the extra time to figure out how to explain himself to the archdruid would likely benefit the disobedient man.

Kanon Haruna

The young male showed no dismay or surprise that his wings were ruined. Kanon supposed that meant he already had been clipped before being attacked, but for the life of him, he could not figure out the reasoning behind it. Without being able to fly, it was harder for prey species, such as the peryton, to escape. Lips pressed together, he wondered what the other male had done to be punished so harshly. In the light of the fire, he may have looked intimidating for all of a moment before he was smiling gently again. "Of course. It would not be any trouble to escort you back." Kanon could not stand to think that the creature he helped save would be attacked again as soon as he left the perimeter. He could never stand by and watch the helpless being attacked which was probably why he had fallen for traps in the past. Too predictable. Still, he never learned from his past mistakes or refused to change for the better of only himself. "My name is Kanon. Now, we are no longer strangers. I would hate to see you being attacked again just because I could not spare the time to see you to safety."

The celestial hesitated then. He knew he should let the peryton know that he actually was seeking the help of his tribe, but it felt too much like taking advantage of the other male. If the pertyon tribe refused to aid him, he knew he could not force them. Kanon desperately wanted the help, but he had frightened people in the past and been chased out of villages and tribes. Yet at the same time, he felt deceitful if he did not let the other male know the truth. To be shown the way to the tribe with an ulterior motive, he knew he wouldn't be able to even open his mouth to ask for the favor if he felt guilty.

"I actually was looking to speak with someone of your tribe that is familiar with the healing magic. If you are willing to introduce me, that is more than enough thanks. I didn't save you to receive any boon." He tried to earnestly impress upon the other male. Kanon placed the water bowl in front of the peryton before picking up the small handkerchief and placing it next to the bowl. He had washed several plants and berries for eating, making sure to pick enough for his companion as well. It was good that he was awake now since he would need to eat and drink to regain his energy.

"I'm afraid we will have to wait for dawn to travel. I know your family must be anxious to see you again, but I have poor night vision. I'm more liable to getting us in trouble than to be of any help at night." He admitted quietly, looking back over at the fire to save himself from showing the heat that had spread from his face to his ears. After traveling through the lands for so long, he should have adapted to the evening, but the celestial still found himself tripping if he had to travel through the night. Kanon couldn't help but find himself uncomfortable when he was away from the fire as well. "Please eat and drink. If we wish to get you back to your home, you need to regain your strength after that attack."

tab Akakios eyed the water before lifting the vessel to his lips. It tasted as it should, from one of the rivers nearby his home, so he knew he was close. His eyes shut while he drew the liquid in, having been parched from the heavy breathing of escape and from the passage of time. He finished it off, hoping that was alright, before setting the bowl back down. The peryton's dark black nails glinted in the firelight. Feeling more comfortable now, he adjusted his weight and spoke. "Call me Akakios," he began. "The archdruid, he....could more than likely provide the service you are searching for. He is a man of many talents, we trust him with many of the more important tasks of our village." The feathered man carefully looked over the food offered to him, but glanced up to the one who had offered it. The peryton's eyes were very keen, even at night, and he had noticed the shift in his companion's complexion. For someone who had been capable of rescuing him to have such a fault, he mused. With a short smile, Akakios began to eat, chewing thoughtfully.

"This healing magic you require..." he pressed, realizing he should not be, thought once he'd started, there was no taking back his words. "Would it be for someone you are acquainted with? The archdruid may not be able to make the journey to the one in need, if the distance is too great." Feeling his question may have been rude, Akakios lowered his eyes, focusing on the makeshift meal. Once again shifting his weight, he winced. It was a habit to lift his wings out of the way, and already he had forgotten his injuries.
