As the early morning light came through the curtains in her room, Rhett rolled over and covered her head with the blankets she was bundled up in. She didn't want to wake up. It was too early or at least she thought it was. When she was at her house, she could sleep in as late as she wanted and not have to worry about hearing roosters squawking at the crack of dawn. Thankfully, she'd managed to sleep through that this morning. She kept hoping against hope that she could get back to sleep but that didn't seem to be happening. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't lull herself back to sleep and because of that, she let out an audible groan and threw the blankets off of her as she sat up in bed. People were supposed to be able to sleep in when they were on vacation but that just wasn't happening for her. She really hadn't been able to sleep in at all during this vacation of hers but she really didn't mind too much. It just gave her more time to spend with her best friend, Collin, who was probably still asleep in his own room. They'd been best friends since childhood and honestly, she couldn't have asked for a better friend. He was always there when she needed him and always supported her no matter what. He was just an all around great guy and she just felt lucky to have him in her life.

Rhett slowly moved out of bed and made her way out of the room, making sure to be as quiet as possible. She wasn't sure if Collin was still sleeping or not and if he was, she didn't want to wake him. He worked really hard on his parents farm as their head rancher and she knew he needed his sleep. Hell, he probably needed it more than she did. She was the one who was on vacation, after all. It was actually his idea for her to stay with him. She usually stayed with her grandparents but he convinced to just stay at his place because they would probably be spending all their time together anyway. Besides her grandparents, he was the main reason she still came around to the small town they all lived in. She actually lived a couple hours away in a much larger city where she owned a bakery called Sweetie Pies. She made the journey out of the city a couple times a years, usually around Christmas and during the summer. One of the perks of owning a business was that she could take off when she wanted to but that was only because she had amazing employees whom she could trust. They were more like her friends anyway so it worked out better for everyone.

It didn't take too long for Rhett to make her way into the bathroom and take a quick shower. It worked better at waking her up than a cup of coffee did. Plus, it was just a good way to start the day. After her shower, she made her way back to her room, which was really just a guest bedroom, and started to put together an outfit for her to wear. From what she saw through the window, it was a nice enough day for her to wear a dress. She took her time getting dressed and ready for the day, which was nice. She normally didn't get to take as much time as she wanted to when it came to getting ready. She usually had to somewhat rush through getting ready because of how fast paced her life was in the city. Sometimes, she thought about leaving the city and just living in the same small town as her grandparents and Collin. She liked the pace of country life and but at the same time, she loved her life in the city. She was torn between those two things and she knew that someday, she would need to make a decision about what she really wanted. Maybe that time would come sooner than she thought.

Rhett let out a content sigh as she took a look at herself in the mirror and walked out of her room once more. She took a look around the house and wondered if Collin was there or not. She was hoping he was but she wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't. It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for him to be out working on his parents farm and most mornings, he would just let her sleep instead of waking her up to let her know he was leaving. Most of the time if he wasn't home when she got up, she would just lounge around on the couch and watch some TV or a movie. She didn't mind entertaining herself or letting him do his job. Though sometimes, he would ask her if she wanted to go work with him and those days were always fun. She honestly didn't mind doing farm work with him. He always made it fun and it wasn't like she hadn't done it before. She helped out on her grandparents farm while she was growing up. She wasn't afraid to get her hands or clothes dirty. Doing farm work was just par for the course out in the country.

"Collin, are you awake or even home?" Rhett called out as she looked around the house for him before she came upon his door. She hesitated for a moment before finally knocking on the door. Even though they were best friends, she really didn't just want to barge into his room. She knew he wouldn't really mind if she did because she had done it so many times before when they were growing up. She couldn't count the times they had both barged into each others rooms without a care in the world for what might be happening on the other side of the door. That had lead to some very awkward moments for them. "I'm coming in," she said, not even sure if she was actually talking to anyone. After she opened the door and walked in, she took a look around his room and hoped he would be in there. She was wondering what they would be doing that day... if they were doing anything at all.

Last night had been a rather long day for Collin and his dad along with their other ranch hands. He felt terrible for it being such a late evening with Rhett being in town, but it couldn’t be helped. One of their horses was pregnant and in the middle of labor close to supper time. Collin had taken the first several hours of taking watch over the colt. It turned out to be a healthy baby from the first watch and then another ranch hand took over, so it was time to call it a night.

He had wondered into his home on his parent’s property trying to be as quiet as possible. He had a guest staying in the house. He had managed to convince Rhett to stay with him for a portion of her vacation. She was his best friend since they were kids and he cared very deeply about her. Collin was ecstatic that she had agreed to stay, but it seemed as if he had a lot to do this summer. There were a lot of things going on in town and they were constantly busy. By the time he had made it to his room he shed what clothes were dirty and then dropped onto his bed and passed out. It was going to be an early day tomorrow as well with taking care of the newborn colt.

When Collin’s alarm went off at five in the morning he was used to only getting a couple hours of sleep before starting his day. He got up without complaint and started to get dressed into another pair of clean work clothes and made his way back through his house, careful to not make any noise. It was still early and he didn’t want Rhett to wake up. Although he figured she wouldn’t mind after a while and a cup of coffee, but still. This was her vacation. He wasn’t going to be the one to ruin it.

He had made his way to the stables to check on the colt to see it being rather inquisitive of his surroundings before going and nursing on the mare. Collin relieved the ranch hand that had relieved him and he went to work with checking the vitals and making sure the mare and the colt were okay. He added more bedding and cleaned the stables up for the new comer. It had already been 12 hours since the colt was born so he was doing okay. He didn’t need as much supervision, but it was still required. His dad and the vet were going to take over within the next couple of hours, so Collin was just getting a head start on the morning chores before Rhett would wake up. He wanted to be able to spend some time with her. You could say that Collin was quite smitten with her, he dedicated all of his time to her when she was in town. His parents kept griping at him to ask her out, but he was always afraid that it would ruin their friendship.

By the time the vet and his dad came out he was done with his chores. He left after making some small talk and went back towards his house. It was just barely sunrise by the time he made it back into his room without making a sound again. It was quite hard to do with his boots against the hard wood floor. When he was back in his room he started to strip out of the dirty clothes and made his way to his bathroom and hoped into the shower. He didn’t know that Rhett was already getting ready for the day so early. Although it really shouldn’t have surprised him. When he stepped out of the bathroom he wrapped a towel around his waist and made it snug so it wouldn’t fall. He opened the door to his bathroom to see the blonde already in his room looking around. She hadn’t turned around fully yet as he looked towards her. Another awkward situation that they found themselves in. This wasn’t the first time it had happened on either side, but it still would catch him off guard. He didn’t know what to do but call out to her.

He let a smile grace his tanned face that lit up his hazel eyes. ”Good morning..” He stated holding the towel a little tighter even though it was secure. ”You’re up rather early today?” He stated walking closer towards his dresser on the other side of the room. He hoped she couldn’t tell that he was in fact a little bashful. Any and every time this happened he was like this.

Hearing a voice calling out to her was enough to startle Rhett, even if it was a familiar voice. She just honestly wasn't expecting Collin to be home but she was glad he was. She'd woken up to and fallen asleep to an empty house since the first night of her vacation. She knew that Collin was a bust guy and she respected that but it still bummed her out. She had chosen to stay with him over her grandparents to spend more time with him but that just didn't seem be happening lately. She'd seen more of his couch and TV than she had of him, which bummed her out. Spending time with him was one of her favorite things to do because he was just so fun to be around. He always knew how to make her smile and laugh. He never made her feel uncomfortable or tried to convince her to do anything she didn't want to do unlike some other guys she knew. Those were the guys she didn't really tell Collin about because she knew how upset he would be if he were to find out. Nothing really bad had ever happened to her so she really didn't think it was a big deal. She was a big girl and could take care of herself or so she thought.

After spending a few more moments settling herself down, Rhett returned his smile and leaned against the wall behind her. Seeing him in his towel was nothing new for her but it was still enough to make her cheeks turn to a light shade of red. "Good morning to you, too," she said before letting out a laugh, noticing that he was holding his towel tighter than before. "I think it's tight enough, Collin. You don't want to cut off circulation," she joked with him as she looked him over. She remembered all the times she'd been the one walked in on while only wearing a towel and how much his cheeks would light up when he realized, much like they were now. She thought it was so cute that he was being so bashful. It was one of the many things she loved about him. Letting out a sigh, she nodded her head to his question and just smiled once more. "Yeah, I know. The sun just wouldn't let me go back to sleep," she stated as she pushed herself off the wall and made her way over to him. She placed a kiss upon his cheek and looked up into his eyes, smiling more as she did so. "I'm going to go make coffee and something for breakfast." And with that, she turned on her heels and left the room so he could get dressed.

It didn't take long for her to reach the kitchen and go on about what she said she was going to do. She started the coffee before beginning to look through his cabinets for something to make. Thankfully, he wasn't like most guys and kept his kitchen stocked. She would've been upset if he hadn't but not too much. He was a single guy, after all. "What to make... what to make..." she said softly to herself as she looked at the choices she had. She could be lazy and just make bowls of cereal with toast or she could actually make something for breakfast. She took the latter option and decided upon making. As she began to gather what she needed, it became obvious that she was making beignets. Beignets were one of her favorite things to make and she just loved the way they tasted. They were donuts but better. As she went about making their breakfast, she began to sing softly to herself while moving about the kitchen. It was just something she did whenever she was cooking or baking. No one ever seemed to mind, especially not Collin. She'd caught him more than once just listening to her with a smile on his handsome face.

It would be a lie for Rhett to say she didn't have romantic feelings for Collin because she did. She'd had those feelings since they were teens but she always suppressed them. There were so many times she'd wanted to tell him how she felt but she always stopped herself because she didn't want to ruin their friendship. She could never be sure if he felt the same way about her or if she just saw her as nothing more than a friend. Everyone around her, including her grandparents, had urged her to just lay everything on the line and just tell him how she felt. They all said it was so obvious how he felt about her and how she felt about him, saying they both must've been blind to not see it themselves. Maybe that was true but her fear always stopped her. She didn't know what she would do if she lost Collin. She didn't want to imagine her life without him because he was such a big part of it and had been for a long time. She always figured that even if she couldn't be in a romantic relationship with him than at least she could just be his best friend. Though, maybe someday, she would find the courage to tell him how she felt about him.

Just as she pulled herself from her thoughts, Rhett looked at the clock on the kitchen wall and realized it was time for her to take the beignets out of the oil they were frying in, making sure to sprinkle them with powdered sugar. She'd made more than enough for both her and Collin. She figured maybe he could take some to his parents or some of the other ranch hands. She was sure they would love to have some and were probably pretty hungry. "Collin, breakfast is ready," she called out, not sure if he was still in his bedroom or not. As she waited for him to come for breakfast, she went about finishing up the coffee and pouring into two mugs, one for each of them. She left his alone so he could add or not add anything to it. She added both creamer and sugar to her own before taking a sip, letting out a content sigh afterward. She took another sip before setting the mug down on the counter and picking up one of the beignets. She began to idly munch on it while looking out of the kitchen window, still waiting for Collin.

As she was talking behind him he was pulling out clothes for the day. He planned on spending the whole day with her since he was able to finish his chores for the majority of the day this morning. She made a comment on him gripping the towel and he couldn't help but laugh. "Hardy har har.." He stated under his breath before she came up and kissed him on the cheek. Her lips were as if a feather just brushed his skin and he smiled down at her. "Alright I'll see you in a bit then." He stated before she sauntered out of his room and he was able to let out the breath that he was holding. If she only knew what she did to him things would be different and that was the point of bottling all of this up. He didn't want this to change.

Speaking of changing he needed to get changed so he could meet her in the kitchen. He quickly pulled on underwear and then finished up brushing his teeth and then styling his hair. Once he was done putting on deodorant he pulled on a pair of nicer jeans and then a white v-neck tee shirt. Collin pulled on a pair of socks and then picked up his pair of boots and walked out of his room to see Rhett dancing around in the kitchen. He smiled amused at the show that she was doing as he gently set his boots by his couch. He noticed what she was wearing and looked rather nice today in the dress. It wasn't like she never not looked nice, but the dress was very pretty on her.

He walked closer towards the kitchen and came up behind her and placed a kiss on the side of her head. "Thank you for breakfast. It looks amazing as always." He stated with a smile and then took a beignet and placed it on a plate. He took the cup of coffee that she made and then sat at the bar and took a drink of his coffee. He was definitely going to need this for the day to keep up with Rhett. "So, what would you like to do today? You have me all to yourself all day." He stated with a smirk and took a bite of the delicious pastry. He let his head fall back at the taste. Anything she baked was always so wonderfully delicious. "God, Rhett. .You're gonna make me gain wait from the delicious things you make." He stated and then took another bite and just about had an orgasm as he ate it.

Feeling the kiss he placed upon the side of her head, Rhett couldn't help but smile. She loved how affectionate they were with each other and was happy that it never made things awkward between them. It just happened organically throughout the course of their friendship. It wasn't out of the ordinary to catch them holding hands as they walked through the town or cuddled up on the couch watching a movie. She'd always been a really affectionate person and she was glad that Collin seemed to be that way as well. Though, he only seemed to be really affectionate with her but she always just shrugged it off. She tried not to think anything of it and just convinced herself that he saw her as nothing more than a friend or maybe even sort of like one of his sisters. There was never any telltale sign to say or show her that he had real romantic feelings for her and she was sure she did a pretty good job of hiding her feelings for him. Though, a part of her did always wonder why he hadn't settled down with a girl and started a family. He was twenty-six, after all. She was only twenty-three so most people thought she was too young to be starting a family and settling down. Everyone always told her she needed to enjoy her twenties before having those things but honestly, she wouldn't have minded settling down and having children. It had always been part of her plan for her life. There just wasn't anyone she wanted to settle down with other than Collin and she didn't think that was ever going to happen.

She watched as he moved to sit at the bar as he enjoyed his breakfast but she just stayed where she was, leaning against the counter as she looked at him. She'd already finished her beignet and was working on finishing her coffee, not sure if she wanted more or not yet. "Oh, do I?" she asked with a smile as she set her cup down on the counter by the coffee maker. "Hmm... I don't know. Do you know of anything happening around town that might be fun? Like a party or something." Usually, there was someone he knew around town having a get together. Maybe going to a party would be fun even though she usually skipped things like that. Parties just had never been her scene but she wanted to do something fun with Collin, something they didn't normally do. She hoped he wouldn't think something was wrong with her because she suggested it. "We usually always stay in and I just think a party might be fun for the both of us. Plus, it would be nice to just let loose... a little," she added with a laugh. Letting lose was something she didn't do all that often. She'd always been a responsible young lady and had been called a 'wet blanket' on more than one occasion. She didn't mind too much. It wasn't so bad being the person who used their head for more than a hat rack.

Rhett just watched as Collin ate his beignet and felt her cheeks become warm as she did. His reaction wasn't something she was expecting because frankly, he looked like he might orgasm right there at the bar. It was nice to know that her cooking was that good but still, it made her feel a little embarrassed. "T-Thank you. I try," she said softly as she looked at the floor for a moment as she tried to gain some of her composure back. It was times like these that she wondered if he even fathomed what kind of effect he had on her when things like this happened. "Though, I don't think you would gain too weight with all the manual labor you do. You'd just work it all off before it had a chance to become fat," she said as she finally able to look up from the floor without worrying that she would still be blushing. Her blushing was something he always teased her about playfully. He always told her how cute she was with her cheeks all lit up, which only ever made her blush more.

After placing her dishes in the sink, Rhett made her way over to the bar and hopped up on it, sitting next to where Collin had his plate. "So, what happened on the farm last night? I know you weren't home when I fell asleep," she said as she looked over at him while she picked up his beignet, playfully taking a bite out of it. She had always taken bites out of his food and he never seemed to mind. Sharing food or drinks was just something they did. "In case you're wondering, I just lounged on your couch in my pj's and watched some stuff on Netflix while pigging out on junk food," she mentioned with a laugh. She knew he wouldn't mind that she ate some of his junk food. At least she cleaned up after herself and would more than likely be buying more junk food while she was staying with him. She might even just make some junk food for them to enjoy. She did make some pretty good homemade potato chips. Making food was something she really enjoyed doing and she knew he enjoyed eating whatever she made. That much was evident from his reaction earlier to eating what she made for breakfast.

"How do you manage to just make a t-shirt and jeans look so good, Collin? I mean seriously," Rhett asked with a playful tone in her sweet voice. It was the truth. She was certain there wasn't anything Collin wouldn't look good in. He could be wearing a burlap sack or a trash bag and still look the best guy around. "You even make just a towel look amazing." Okay, maybe she was really enjoying teasing him. Now she could why he always enjoyed doing it to her so much. It really was a ton of fun. "I just... I mean, wow. It's a wonder you don't have girls falling all over you all the time or knocking down your front door," she said with a laugh as she twirled some of her hair around one of her fingers. With how handsome and fit he was, it really was a wonder to her. She was already head over heels for him and she was sure there were other girls who would jump at the chance to have Collin to call their own. He really was a catch.

Collin noticed the blush rising to her cheeks at his reaction of her cooking. A smirk graced his face as he made eye contact with her when she did look back up. At her mentioning of a party going on he at first was a bit taken back by her suggesting it because she didn't always tend to want to do things like that. But he couldn't blame here. There wasn't as much to do out here unlike back at her place in the city. Collin had remembered plenty of times that he had been at her place and there was always something to do, something to go see, eat, watch. So many things. He didn't mind it so much, but this was home for him. He liked the quiet life and working out here. There were no loud noises and sirens at night. Barely any traffic and wide open spaces.

"Actually I do know of one tonight, it's a friends birthday and he's having a huge house party and bonfire." He stated as she walked over towards him and sat on top of the bar. He adverted his eyes at the sight of her bare legs. Her stealing his food from him and taking a bite brought him back as he looked up at her and gave a chuckle. "We had a new colt born last night and the mare was having a bit of difficulty that's why I was awol for a while. Dad needed my help with taking care of the mare until the vet could come in." He stated. The thought of her just lounging around watching Netflix and eating junk food all day made him laugh. She was bored out of her mind and he felt bad for it.

"Well to make up for it, I'll show you a good time for the remainder of your stay here." He stated and took the beinget back from her and took a bit again. If someone was looking in from the outside of their relationship they would think that they were in a romantic relationship with the way they acted around each other. He was starting to finish his breakfast until she started to break out with teasing him on how good he looked. Collin just smiled a bashful smile and then glanced towards her. He bit his lip at her statements and just shook his head as he stood up from the bar and picked up his dirty plate. "None that I want." He stated softly and went to walk away but noticed she had some powder sugar on her face. He gave a small huff of approval and then brushed it away with his thumb before going to the sink and putting the dirty dishes into the sink and walked out of the kitchen to go and put on his boots.

The way she was with her words were as if she meant that truthfully. Here lately his feelings for her were becoming stronger and stronger. When he had his boots on he slipped on a long sleeved buttoned up shirt with the sleeves rolled up and then stood up to look back at Rhett. "You want to go see the colt and then go and run some errands for the party tonight?" He asked with a smile on his face as he walked up closer to her.

Rhett was relieved that Collin didn't seem too surprised by her inquiring about a party. Though, he did look a little taken back but she expected that much. She normally came out to the country, to this small town, to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. She liked that there weren't sirens and shouting all night long and into the day. She liked that she could see the starry sky if she looked out a window at night. It was refreshing to be somewhere the pace was slower sometimes. That wasn't to say that she didn't always like having something to do all the time because in the city, there was always something to do. There was always a bar or show to go to. She could sit at a cafe in the middle of the night or go see a movie in the middle of the afternoon. Her friends in the city always had something fun they could do together. Plus, her parents lived in the city and she was pretty close to them. After all, she was their only child. She wished she could have the best of both worlds but she just didn't see that happening. It seemed like it was impossible most of the time.

A giggle came from Rhett's lips as she watched him avert his gaze and she shook her head. It wasn't like this was the first time she'd done something like sit on his bar or the first time she'd worn a dress around him. It was still cute, nonetheless. "Which friend? Do I know him?" she asked as she tried to think if there were any of his friends that she didn't know. She was pretty sure she knew all of them but she just wanted to make sure. As Collin began to explain why he'd come home so late, she nodded her head and smiled. A new colt being born was an exciting thing and she could understand why his father had needed him so late. Both the mare and colt needed a lot of attention in the first hours after birth. "Oh, how exciting! Is it cute?" She was just like any other girl and wanted to know about its cuteness. Though, she thought most baby animals were cute and she knew Collin was aware of that. He'd seen her fawn over plenty of baby animals over the course of their long friendship. "Everything went smoothly though, right?" The compassionate part of her needed to know that both the mother and the baby were okay. She would hate to think something went wrong and that Collin wouldn't mention it to her.

Rhett put her hand over her heart and smiled when Collin said he would the rest of her stay a good time. "Aw, that's so sweet, Collin. Though, I always have a good time with you," she stated as she leaned down to place a kiss on his cheek. She couldn't help it when he was being so sweet and sincere. She knew he meant what he said and it meant a lot to her. She meant what she said as well. There was never a time she didn't have a good time with Collin. She always enjoyed being around him even if they weren't doing anything. When he got bashful again at her comments, she smiled sweetly at him as he bit his lip and shook his head. He was just so cute that it was almost heartbreaking. His comment made her raise an eyebrow, though. It made her wonder what girl he did want. Just before she was about to open her mouth and say something, she felt his thumb brushing against her cheek to get the sugar off and now it was her turn to become bashful. Her cheeks lit up again and she found herself looking down once more as she tried to regain herself.

As Collin went about getting his boots on, Rhett hopped off the counter and moved towards the beignets sitting on the counter. She didn't want them to become stale so she needed to put them in something with a lid. It didn't take her long to find what she needed and get them put away. She also took a moment to turn off the coffee maker before turning her attention back to Collin, nodding to what he said. "Of course I would love to. It'll give me a chance to say hi to your parents and give the rest of these," she said before picking up the container of beignets and making her way over to Collin. Once she got close enough to him, she slipped her hand into his and laced their fingers together. She gave his hand a gentle squeeze as she looked up at him with a smile on her delicate features. "Did you already get your work done for the day?" she asked as she began to lead him towards the door. It was still early in the day but it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for him to have already done his work for the day.

As they walked together, Rhett couldn't help but think about him comment from earlier. She wondered what he meant and if there really was a girl he wanted more than any other. It never occurred to her that girl he wanted might just be her. "So, is there any girl you want? Like one in particular?" she asked as she playfully bumped him. "Any girl would be lucky to have you. You're such a great guy." It was the truth. He really was a great guy or at least he was in her eyes. She didn't know how he acted when she wasn't around but she hoped he acted the same around her as he did everyone else. "I mean, I just want you to be happy."And she truly did. That's all she ever wanted for him. She always tried her best to make sure he was and did what she could to make he knew that. After all, what else were best friends for? "You know I love you, right? You're like almost the whole world to me... you know, aside from my parents and grandparents," she stated sweetly as she looked up at him with a smile. Using the word love wasn't out of the ordinary for them. Though, sometimes, she wished they were using in the romantic sense and not in the platonic sense. She so desperately wished she could just lay it all on the line and tell him how she really felt about him. She was just afraid of ruining what they had and she didn't want to risk losing him.

"Do you remember Johnathan Greer? It's his birthday." He stated before she started to ask about the colt and if it was cute. He just smiled and chuckled at her response. It was typical that she was asking if he was cute or not. "There all cute." He stated with a laugh and nodded his head at her question if everything was okay with the mare and the colt. She came closer towards him and it took everything in his power to not say she was the girl he wanted. That innocent look as she looked up at him as she held his hand in hers. He gave her a light squeeze and shook his head to hopefully get out of that conversation. Maybe it was time for him to confess his feelings, but today wasn't going to be that day.

"Rhett I am happy. I have you here." He stated pulling her into a side hug as they walked out of his house and towards the stables. When she said that she loved him it stabbed him in the chest. He knew she meant it truthfully but the meaning he wanted to be behind it wasn't there. However he smiled down at her with a big grin and then kissed the side of her head. "I love you too, Rhett." He mused against her hair. He however meant it romantically but he knew she would never know.

As they arrived at the stables he could see his youngest sister, Jasmine at an age of 15, barrel racing on her horse Clementine. She was preparing for the season coming up and shooting for the championship. "Damn, Jasi getting quicker with her times." He stated walking closer with Rhett towards the railings. Jasmine was coming in hot with a barrel and as Clementine rounded it a could of dust sprang up being sprayed towards his dad and other sister, Michelle whom they called Miche (meeshe). She was only 19 and ontop of her horse, Titan who was a huge draft horse that she used to show in horse shows. Miche yelled towards a laughing Jasmine who thought it was rather hilarious that she was now covered in red dirt. Titan just shook it off and then with a click of her tounge Titan was off and they were chasing each other on horse back. His Dad Jacob just chuckled at the sight and brushed off what dirt was on him. Collin did the same and then looked towards Rhett to see if she thought it was in the least bit funny. His sisters were so full of life and loved to really get on each others nerves. By the time they noticed that Collin and Rhett were on the side Michelle stopped Titan and guided him towards them.

"RHETT! I didn't know you were already here!" Miche squealed and jumped off her giant horse just as Jasmine was coming closer and did the same. The girls jumped the metal fences and they both just about tackled her for a hug. Collin was quick to steady Rhett in front of him and held her by her waist so she wouldn't fall. "We need to have a girls night so you can get away from stinky Collin!" Jasmine chimed in and she stuck out her tongue at her older brother and he shook his head. "Why is it you two gang up on me?" He groaned as his dad came towards them as well and hugged Rhett. "Alright girls, you don't need to bombard the poor girl. Let her and Collin spend some time together.." He stated patting his son on the back.
"Well Rhett brought everyone some tasty treats." He stated with a grin, but once treats were mentioned the girls quickly took a beinget and thanked Rhett before scarfing them down.

"So un-lady like.." he teased to them before the responded by playfully punching him and then going back into the pen where their horses were waiting.
"Thank you for the treats, Rhett. Everyone will be thankful. Will ya'll be joining us for dinner?" He asked taking the tub away from Rhett to put it inside the house. Collin shook his head. "Probably not, Johnathan's birthday is tonight and I thought we'd go to that." He stated and his dad nodded his head. "Ya'll be careful then. Girls, get back on your horses and do another run." He stated and then walked back into the pen and handed over the treats to someone to take to the house.

Collin looked towards Rhett and took her hand in his again. "Come on, let's go and look at the Colt." He stated and guided her towards the stable where they were housing them. He opened the barn door and walked inside to hear a soft whinny and the colt trotted over towards them with another whinny.

Rhett nodded her head to both knowing who Johnathan Greer was and that the mare and the colt were okay. She knew she'd met Johnathan on more than one occasion and had hung out with him before as well. He'd always seemed like an okay guy to her and never treated her any differently because she was from the city. A few of Collin's other friends had done that exact thing before. She could understand why they did but it didn't make it hurt any less. She wasn't any different than they were and she had never treated them any differently. She always tried her best to treat everyone the same. Over time, she had learned to shrug it off and just let it go. She'd realized it wasn't worth her time to be upset over something she had no control over and couldn't change. There were better things that she could focus her time and attention on. Also, as they got older, his friends realized she wasn't going anywhere and just got over it. Things were better now that they were all adults and she was thankful for that.

As they walked and he pulled her into the hug, Rhett couldn't help but smile and return it the best she could. His hugs were always something that made her smile and her smile only grew when she heard what he had to say. It was nice knowing that he was happy when she was around. She always knew he was but it was nice to hear it said every once and a while. Though, when she heard him say he loved her too and placed that kiss on the side of her head, she felt that same stab in her chest that Collin felt. It was both hard and wonderful to hear him say those words to her. It made her heart sing with joy all the while being broken into pieces. She so desperately when those words to have a romantic connotation behind them and not a platonic one. It was so hard keeping her feelings bottled up sometimes. She just wanted to stop him right there and give him the most passionate kiss that she could muster up. One that would say all the things she was too afraid to say out loud. It took everything in her to stop her from doing just that. Not today but maybe someday.

Thankfully, it didn't take them long to get to the stables where everyone but his mother seemed to be. She could see his sisters, Michelle and Jasmine, riding on their horses as they got closer. She also saw his father as well but that was normal. It was his farm, after all, and someone had to watch the girls just in case something unfortunate happened. Rhett turned her attention to Collin once more as he began to speak, nodding to what he said. "If she gets any quicker, she'll definitely win that championship," she responded with a smile. She was about to say something else but before she could, a cloud of red dust came their way and she started to cough while both Collin and his father laughed at the reactions of both his sisters. They were always so living and full of boundless energy. They'd been that way for as long as she could remember and she thought it was so endearing. It made her wish she had siblings but with those girls, it was like she did. When Collin looked down to gauge her reaction to everything, she had finished coughing and let out a laugh of her own to let him know she thought it was amusing as well. Though, when she looked down at her clothes, she let out a soft sigh and tried to dust off the red dirt as best she could. Maybe it hadn't been such a good idea to wear light colored clothing.

The next thing she knew both Jasmine and Michelle were charging at her and she didn't have the time to brace herself but thankfully, Collin did and steadied her just as his sisters hugged her. She could only laugh and smile as she returned their hugs and rested against Collin after it was over. "Yeah, sorry. I meant to text you and Jasi. Though, I thought Collin would've mentioned it," she said as she placed her free hand on one of Collin's. And yeah, we do. We could watch some movies and make some goodies. It'll totally be fun," she said in response to what Jasi said. Having a girls night sounded like fun and she knew that Collin wouldn't mind. She knew that he liked that she got along with his sisters and his parents. She did, too. It made things a whole lot easier. She laughed at Collin's comment to his sisters and squeezed his hand gently. The way they all were together was just so cute. "Hey, Mr. Ramsey," she said with a smile as she returned the hug he gave her. She was just about to offer him and the girls a beignet but Collin took care of that for her. She didn't mind though.

Rhett stayed quiet as Collin and his father talk, still resting against like she had before. Though when he thanked for the treats, she nodded her head and let him take the container from her. It was nice not to be holding it anymore. It was starting to get a bit tiring for her arm. "It's no problem. It's better to eat them fresh and I knew you guys would like them. Plus, I thought you might be hungry," she said as she ran her fingers through her hair. Before she knew it, his sisters were off to finish their runs and his father was heading back to the pen. She waved to them before turning her attention back to Collin. She felt him move out from her behind her and take her hand in his own again. "Yeah, we should probably go do that," she stated as she followed him to the stables.

Once they were inside, Rhett's face lit up when she laid her eyes on the colt and she let out a giggle as he moved closer to them. She couldn't believe how absolutely adorable the colt was. It had such pretty coloring and she was just so already in love with it. "Oh my god! He's so adorable, Collin," she said as she looked up at him for a moment before turning her attention back to the colt. "Thank you for bringing me to see him. It means a lot to me." With that, she turned to give him a kiss on the cheek but miscalculated and ending kissing him on the lips. When she realized what happened, she froze up for a moment and just stood there, lips partially open. She was just so embarrassed and didn't know what to do. She couldn't believe that had just happened. Her heart was racing inside her chest and felt like it was about to explode. She could feel the butterflies in her stomach doing somersaults. Even for the brief moment their lips touched, she felt like a million fireworks were going off inside her but right now, it was overrode by the thought that she may have done something to make Collin uncomfortable. "I... I'm so sorry, Collin," she whispered as she looked into his eyes nervously, hoping he would know or think it was an accident. All she could do was wait to see if he would say or do anything at all and she was trying to prepare herself for whatever might happen.

As he watched Rhett's face light up at the sight of the colt he chuckled as he watched her move closer towards him. Collin leaned against the railing as Rhett was next to him. He was caught up in the moment as the mare came closer to Collin and he petted her neck before she leaned down to pick up some hay and eat it. Rhett's voice pulled him from being stuck in his head and he looked over towards her. It was so quick he almost didn't believe what just happened. She had kissed him, he was sure that she was probably going to lean and kiss him on the cheek. But what surprised him more was her reaction to it. She immediately froze and pulled back staring up at him.

He was a little disappointed, this just confirmed that she didn't feel the way he felt about her which made this harder for him. He bit his lip and shook his head to try and disolve the matter. "It's fine Rhett. Mistakes happen." he replied a little more disappointed than what he wanted to sound. It wasn't her fault that she didn't have feelings for him. He didn't need to take it out on her. "I have to run some errands for the party tonight, let's go." He stated grabbing her hand again and leading her out of the stables back towards where his ttruck was parked in front of the house. He opened the passenger door and helped Rhett in before going to the driver side and jumping in and starting the truck.

He took off from the ranch and got onto on of the main county roads and couldn't help but think back to her kissing him. It was more a peck, but still a kiss. He wanted to pull her to him and continue kissing her, but he knew it would just not be the best for the both of them. Within the next twenty minutes they were closer to town and more stores started to pop up until they reached the downtown area. It was silent the whole ride up there and he needed to break the silence. He reached over the center console to take her hand in his and gave it a light squeeze. "If you were one of the girls that talked about falling for me earlier, all you had to do was say something." He stated with a playful grin and kissed the back of her hand as they pulled into the parking lot. He was needing to stock up on alcohol and a couple of kegs for him and several of his groups of friends and of course whatever Rhett wanted.

They got out of the vehicle and he grabbed a buggy and pulled Rhett towards him to have her stand on the basket like they used to do. They would take the buggies and race them with some of his friends and their girlfriends across the parking lot or even in the grocery store. He put his arms on either side of her letting her lean against his chest as he pushed the buggy while she rode it. People looked at them strange as they walked into the store like that laughing like children. He enjoyed acting like this with her. She was the only girl that he even had this type of connection with It wasn't like he hadn't been with other women before, but those relationships weren't like his and Rhett's.

They made their way over to the alcohol aisle and he came to a stop and helped her off. "Get what you want, we're going to have fun tonight at the party. There's gonna be dancing, drinking, and the bonfire. So we'll get stuff to roast for it as well." He stated and kissed the side of her head. He needed her to know that it was okay with what happened and that they were okay. He didn't need her to think that things weren't okay for them to still be the way they are. By the time they picked out what they each wanted Collin had gotten enough beer for beer pong, his favorite beer, and a mixed variety of liquors along with mixers. When Rhett put in what she wanted they made their way over to the snack aisle and started to pile random stuff into the buggy. Some was for the house and some to munch on at Johnathan's party. Collin didn't pass up the fact to throw packages of marshmellows towards Rhett to see if she would be able to catch enough without dropping them.

When they were done horsing around they made their way up to the cash register to see a friend of his, Tessa When she noticed them her frown turned to a smile at the sight of Collin and he returned it. "Hey stranger.." She stated with a smile and came from around the register to hug Collin. He chuckled and hugged her, her arms wrapped around his neck. When she pulled away she noticed Rhett standing behind him and Tessa smiled her way. "And you must be Rhett?" She questioned with a smile as she walked back around the register to start checking them out. "He talks about you a lot." She stated with a wink and then looked from Rhett to Collin. "Is all of this for tonight?" She asked her voice sounding hopeful and Collin nodded. "Yeah, I wanted to show Rhett out for a good time tonight, so what better way than one of Johnathan's parties?" He stated with a laugh helping her put items on the conveyor belt.

"Yeah! And Johnathan's single now so it'll be a lot of fun for single girls." She stated with a wink towards Rhett's way. Collin wasn't sure how he felt about that. It rubbed him a bit the wrong way but ignored the comment as he was bagging stuff up. "Didn't you and him have a thing?" he asked and Tessa laguhed and shook her head. "He wishes. He's not really my type if you know what I mean." She basically purred out and Collin let out a huff and looked away. He didn't need Rhett to know about his sex life. And it seemed as if Tessa wasn't taking it well that they broke off their little escapades. When she was done ringing things up Collin pulled out cash and payed for everything. "We'll see you tonight." He stated before they walked off with Tessa looking as smug as possible.

Seeing the disappointment in Collin's eyes broke her heart. Rhett knew she had caused that look in eyes and she could tell how upset he was. The way he bit his lip and the change in his demeanor were a dead giveaway. All she wanted to do was turn back time and stop herself because she couldn't tell if he was disappointed in her reaction or if he was disappointed because she kissed him. All she could do was nod when he said mistakes happen and look down for a moment, trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to fall from her eyes. It was almost too much for her to take. The look in his eyes and the sound of his voice were something she wasn't used to. She was used to making him smile and laugh. She was used to him being happy and playful around her. Seeing him so disappointed and hurt was something she didn't know how to deal with it. "Alright, Collin. Lets go," she said softly as she let him take her hand and lead her out of the barn, heading for his truck. She didn't know what else to say or do. She felt like she had ruined everything and that they wouldn't be able to come back from this. It felt like everything between them was irrevocably changed and she didn't like it one bit.

Soon enough, Rhett found herself in the passenger seat of his huge truck looking out the window, watching as the trees and sparse buildings passed them by. She was caught up in her own thoughts. All she wanted to do was tell him how she felt and just lay it all out on the line for him. While she was still staring out the window, she brought her hands to her face and quickly wiped her eyes, hoping Collin wouldn't notice. It was getting harder for her not to just break down and cry. She felt so stupid because of what happened. What brought her out of her thoughts was hearing Collin's voice and feeling that kiss he placed on the back of her hand. His words were enough to make her heart race like had before and wake up those butterflies in her stomach. She knew he was playing around with her and trying to break the silence between them but she just wanted to admit her feelings right then and there. She couldn't though. "Maybe I am. So what if I was?" she asked as she managed to crack a smile at him and squeeze his hand. She was trying her best to sound just as playful he did but it was still hard. Half of her was asking a serious question... one she wasn't sure she wanted the answer to right then.

After they pulled into the parking lot and got out of the truck, Rhett felt herself being lifted up and placed where she was standing on the back of the buggy. This was something they always did and it settled her nerves more than she thought it would. A genuine smile came over her features as she rested against Collin while they walked into the store. She didn't care about all the looks they were getting from the people around them. All she cared about was the feeling that maybe everything would be okay and that everything between them hadn't change in those moments earlier. Laughs and giggles came from her lips as they got into the store. She couldn't help it. Doing this made her feel like they were teenagers again. It brought back so many happy memories for her and she needed that right now. She needed to think about happier things and happier times so she wouldn't get lost in those dark thoughts again. No one like a depressed Rhett.

It didn't take long for them to make their way to the liqueur aisle and before she could get herself off the cart, Collin was doing it for her and she just let him. It was nice that he was so gentlemanly and was still being so... normal with her. A sweet smile took over her lips as he said she could get whatever she wanted and placed that kiss on her head, making her giggle as he did. Her nerves were completely settled now and she was certain nothing changed between them. He was still being just as affectionate as ever with her, which was so relieving. She hadn't ruined everything. "That's so sweet, Collin. Probably not the best thing to offer, though," she mentioned with a laugh as she stuck her tongue out at him. For a moment, she just watched as Collin looked down the cart with various alcohols and kegs. She began to wonder just what she'd gotten herself into by saying they should go to a party together but it wasn't like she could back out now. That wouldn't be fair to Collin or his friend. It was Johnathan's birthday, after all. Shaking her head, she placed a couple bottles of watermelon vodka in the cart and a bottle of Crown Royal in the cart. She knew Collin wouldn't mind because he said she could get whatever she wanted and those were what she wanted. Hopefully, she'd be able to handle her alcohol at the party and nothing too bad would happen.

Rhett followed Collin as they made their way to the snack aisle, where again the cart was being loaded down with things again. It seemed like Collin was going to be spending a pretty good chunk of money on everything. She knew not all of the snacks were for the party but she was certain the marshmallows were. She couldn't help but laugh as he launched a marshmallow assault on her and she did best to catch most of the bags he threw her way. After she picked up the ones that hit the floor and put them in the cart, she looked at Collin and smiled. "I didn't do too bad, did I? I mean, I caught most of them," she said with a laugh as she followed him to the register. What happened next wasn't something she was expecting or even prepared for. The girl behind the checkout stand came out and hugged Collin. She just stood there for a moment and just watched. Maybe they were just friends. Collin had a lot of friends but she'd never met this one before. She nodded her head when she was asked if she was in fact Rhett. "Yeah, that's what it says on my ID," she stated with as much of a smile as she could muster at that moment, not paying much attention to her other comment.. Something just felt off about the interaction. It soon became clear as she continued to check them out as soon as Johnathan's party was mentioned. Rhett was a little taken aback at Tessa's comment and just shook her head. Though Johnathan was a good guy and everything, he wasn't her type. Collin's reaction to the comment wasn't something she was expecting either, He looked a little peeved. More so than a best friend should be. "He's not really my type, so yeah," she muttered as she helped Collin put the bags in the cart. She desperately wanted this to be over. It was grating on her nerves.

As it all continued, Rhett couldn't help but think Tessa thought she was naive or just plain stupid. She knew what the other girl was doing and she didn't appreciate it. She could by the way Tessa was talking that there had been something between her and Collin. It seemed like she was just trying to rub Rhett's face in it. Her normal bubbly demeanor was long since gone and replaced by something else. Something that was out of character for her. That smug looked on the other girls face was enough to make Rhett snap but before she could, Collin was leading her outside. She followed and tried to calm herself down but it wasn't working. Her blood was boiling and she was visibly shaken by the ordeal. It came to head as they got to the parking lot and got closer to his truck. She just stopped and looked at Collin, her hands balled into fists at her sides. Her breathing was heavy and her eyes were watery as she stared at him. Every part of her was hurt and broken.

"What does she have that I don't? Why her and not me? Rhett asked with a shaky voice as she trembled where she was standing. She couldn't hold it back anymore... not after what just happened. She knew Collin had been with other girls, just like she'd been with other guys, but it had never been flaunted in her face like that. She'd never let anything like that happen to Collin before. The only difference was that Rhett hadn't had sex yet. She was still a virgin at twenty-three. She'd always been too focused on her schooling to worry about sex. "Am I not pretty enough? Or is it because I've never..." she trailed off as she slowly unclenched her fists, knowing that Collin already probably knew what she was going to say. Tears began to roll down her cheeks as she looked down at the pavement beneath her. "I can't be like those other girls... like Tessa, I can't be flirtatious and throw myself at you..." she whispered softly, still looking down at the ground. She could feel everyone's eyes on her but she didn't care. Everything felt like it was falling down around her and there was nothing she could do.
