The Scenario:

Sora thought that returning to his life in Destiny Island would be easy. He thought that after defeating Xemnas, retrieving Riku and making sure that Kairi was safe, that they would all just settle in and things would be the same as they always were. Sadly, Sora had been wrong.

Riku wasn't quite the same. He had lost his cocky edge, and he was calmer, more satisfied with his island living. His friend wasn't as interested in playing the old games anymore, and had seemed to grow more adult that Sora remembered. And Kairi... she was a beautiful girl, and the entire island knew it. Their old pretend games and the hours that they spent just goofing around seemed to passe for them nowadays. She was a young woman, and in the year that passed, she had developed her own tastes and interests.

Sora wasn't quite sure what to make of it all at first. He knew that he had been asleep in the chamber for a long time. He was 15 years old now, but his mind was still 14. Cooties still existed to him, and he still felt the need to have a lot of bravado just to make up for his awkwardness. That often warred with his body, which knew it was fifteen and gave him the feelings that all young boys had, especially towards girls.

Kairi was so pretty. And he could see with every passing day, that although their friendship flourished, there was a different part of her that was slipping away from him. A special part that only a select few would ever see in their lifetime. Sora found himself wanting to have that, but he didn't know how to get it.

A whole year, he thought to himself. Sora couldn't stop beating himself up over it as he waited for Kairi by the school gates.

Kairi started walking to the school in the usual uniform going to meet Sora.Things were different, and she knew it. All the things that happened while Sora was away made things now so much harder.Her and Wakka went out for awhile and that didn't work.Her and Tidus started going together when they all got back home but it wasn't the same. Rikku said something to her about it too but she just shrugged it off.She made it to the gates and saw Sora, and tried to give him a smile. "How long have you been waiting for me?" she asked shifting her bag on her shoulder so it became more comfortable. "Maybe I should start leaving earlier huh?" she said putting a finger to the bottom of her jawline and then looked at him with curiosity.

"Uh, not that long," said Sora quickly. Of course, that was a lie. Sora had been camped out on his spot for a half hour now, and he had woken up extra early that morning just to make sure that he made it on time.

Sora was wearing the Destiny Island uniform, which he still felt awkward in. The top button of his shirt was undone, his tie was askew, and his blue flannel pants were already wrinkled. Sadly, the uniform just didn't hold up well when Sora was doing his roof jumping or sprinting to school. "You look nice today," he said with a nervous smile. Duh, Kairi looks nice every day, she wears the same uniform to school all the time, he thought to himself.

Kairi noticed he was lying but figured he wasn't there for much longer then usual.The compliment caught her off guard as she looked down at her uniform then back up at him. "Thanks...I think." she said still looking at him. "Your tie is messed up." she walked up closer to him. "I'll fix it for you." she said carefully putting her hands on him to fix it. "What did you do this morning? Run around the track a million times?" she asked when she got done fixing it she backed up and looked at him. "You've....been acting weird lately. What's wrong?"

Sora ducked his head sheepishly when Kairi asked him what he had been doing this morning. "... I did take a few laps around the island. I gotta exercise, or I'll get flabby really fast. Donald made me do it every morning, I guess I'm just used to it." He was having trouble adjusting to a normal lifestyle. Before he returned to Destiny Islands, Sora was pushing his body to the limits from battling heartless and nobodies. Now all he had to look forward to was a desk at the school and maybe the occasional sports club. He just couldn't see himself living that way.

He rubbed his head when Kairi asked him about acting weird. "I guess... I'm just not used to being home yet," he said lamely. "We better go to the cafeteria, Riku is probably already there."

"That's kind of dangerous Sora.Even with everything you went through.Rikku is waiting for us." she said walking ahead of him towards the cafeteria. "Donald says this...Goofy says defense helps....geeze he's so caught up with that. Why couldn't he be like Rikku?" she said quietly to herself.She missed the old Sora. The one who petty flirted with her even when he didn't know.He promised that no matter what things would always be the same. "We're late we know." Kairi said to Rikku as she moved her bangs of to the side when they got into her eyes.Rikku was normal...some-what anyways.His attitude was better now.He seemed to be more laid back. They haven't fought over her in a long time.

Riku was indeed very laid back, even when things were crazy around him. Currently he was seated at one of the cafeteria tables, pretending that there weren't a bunch of people staring at him. Ever since he returned to Destiny Islands with Sora, they were renowned as heroes. Riku didn't feel like that an appropriate title for him at all, and he hated the way that people stared and idolized him. They didn't know what really happened when he left the islands, and they never would. "You're still lazy bums," he said to Sora and Kairi, glad that they were finally here to give him relief.

Sora pulled back a chair for Kairi, at least knowing how to be a gentleman. Then he sat in a chair next to her, glad to be among his usual circle of friends. Sometimes all the whispers from the other students creeped him out. "I used to think that being famous would be awesome.. boy was I wrong. This is so embarrassing."

"There's a school dance coming up. They want to know who we're going to ask out," said Riku idly. He offered Kairi one of his sticks of gum silently.

"I know you two are heroes but this is getting out of control." she said sitting down in between the boys. Kairi heard the word dance and rolled her eyes.Her and dancing alone was fine. The fact that everyone was wondering who she was taking was irritating her. "Why can't everyone just shut up about it?! Its the same thing every single year. Popularity.People only being nice that one night then back to normal the next day." she said putting her hands in her face. "I'm not going." she finally decided last minute before either boys could give her grief about it.

Sora's mouth fell open when Kairi declared that she wasn't going to the dance, and Riku raised an eyebrow. So much for fighting over who was going to ask her out. Everyone and their mother in the school wanted to know who Kairi was going to pick for the dance: Sora, or Riku. Depending on who she picked, the other boy would be available, and therefore would be fodder for all the girls on the island. That would be a poor boy, indeed.

Sora drew his lips into a sad pout. He had been working up the nerve to ask Kairi out to the dance, but now she didn't want to go at all. That was so unfair! ".. I've never even been to a dance," he said petulantly. Sadly, Sora had been too young to attend any dances, and last year's dance he had missed - for obvious reasons.

"If Kairi isn't going, then neither am I," declared Riku.

"Well I'm not going to go by myself," said Sora, looking down at the table. "I won't go either."

Kairi started laughing in her head. I knew that would catch their attention. she thought as she looked over at them. "You two can go.Ask Selphie or something.I'll be fine by myself.I have been for the past year...Aside from looking for you two at one point last year...." she said looking away from them at this point. She had forgotten about them...and didn't know why.But then they just came back and she wanted them back.She watched them fighting to get back. She even met Namine and Roxas the "other" halves. "Besides Sora you need to get out in the world and quit living in Disney Castle and all over the other places.Especially running the island everyday.Its unnatural!" she said staring straight at him.She could feel her anger and her depression getting to her. "I understand you came back....I really do.But you did leave me when Riku was behind the door. I'll come back to you... I went to you." she said. This was only the beginning of the usual conversations they had in the morning.

Oh no, not this conversation again. Riku sank lower in his seat, because he already knew how this was all going to end. He was glad that his long hair could cover his face while the same old argument went on in the background.

Sora frowned at Kairi. "I couldn't leave Riku behind, he was trapped behind the door with all those things that were back there. You were safe back on the island. How could I just go back with you knowing what was happening to Riku? I thought you were okay with that. And I would have come back to you if you had just stayed put. But I know that's not your fault.... it was stupid Axel's who kidnapped you." Sora looked sour at the memory of that redheaded nobody.

"And even though I'm back.. I can't really rest, Kairi. The heartless are still out there. Nobodies are still out there. Someday, I might have to go and fight again. I can't not be ready. As long as I still have the keyblade, I have to fight. It's with me for a reason."

Kairi stared at him with anger written all over her face. "You should have just.....stayed there!You knew you would have to go back! Mickey even sent you that stupid message in the bottle!Riku and I can handle here!Just......GO!" she yelled loud enough for most people around her to hear.Yeah the usual morning routine was over as Selphie walked over and pulled Kairi away from the boys with the You pushed her over the edge again look. Kairi felt the tears coming through as she looked over Selphie's shoulder. Her face read hurt, pain, anger, and something new...jealousy.She was jealous of Donald, and Goofy. She was jealous at how everything to him now was more important then her and Riku. How he was stuck with the stupid keyblade and wouldn't let the heartless and nobodies go. "He will forget you..." she repeated slowly to herself.Something Namine had said to her before the big "rescue".

Sora was stricken when Kairi turned that angry look on him. No many how many times they went through the same old argument, it still hurt when she looked at him that way. It wasn't his fault that things happened the way he did. Sora didn't ask for the keyblade, it just came to him out of nowhere. Now they were stuck with it, and that was that. He couldn't pretend it was gone, because what kind of person would he be if he ignored his duties in favor of selfishly pretending that he had a normal life?

"Kairi!" he called to her. He stood up from the chair, ready to chase her across the cafeteria.

"Don't," said Riku, finally speaking up. He lifted his head, revealing his aquamarine eyes from under his hair. His expression was very guarded. "Let her cool down. Wait until after school to talk to her."

"But..." began Sora.

"Trust me. You should never talk to a girl when she's angry," said Riku.

Sora hunched up his shoulders in defiance, but then he sighed and let them drop. He listened to Riku, because he had so much more experience when it came to girls than Sora. What was he going to do... he hated to see Kairi so hurt...

Selphie rushed Kairi into the girls bathroom and grabbed paper towels to wipe her eyes with water. Selphie got the towels wet and started the usual dabbing and stared into Kairi's eyes. "You can't just let it go can you?" she asked staring at her best friend. Kairi looked at her then closed her eyes. "Why can't he just see that...I need him ten times more then anything.Riku understands...." she said reopening her eyes. Selphie pulled Kairi into a hug. "Riku knows because you and him got closer when they came back....while Sora...went back to training.And Donald and Goofy....well they are only trying to help." she said handing her the rest of the towels. "I'll just....go talk to Tidus for the rest of the day....and you...of course." Kairi finally said deciding on how to make the rest of her day go. "Okay but just go to class." and with that the two girl's walked out of the bathroom and off to their class.

Sora's mind was on Kairi for the rest of the day. He just couldn't function when she was angry and upset like that. It wasn't in his nature to just let things go. After all that he'd done to make their world safe, why was it so hard to just live? Sora tried to get through his classes. As usual, he didn't pay much attention to them. He was so far behind in his studies that it was sad. Not only was there a year's worth of work to do, but he just didn't have the mind to focus anymore. Whenever anything was going wrong in his life, he worried about that instead of his studies.

The day seemed to drag on. He ate lunch with Riku, and said passing hellos to Tidus and Wakka. They were the only guys who were willing to talk to him nowadays, the rest were either too jealous or intimidated by him. He turned down a soccer game after school, because he was hell bent on speaking to Kairi as soon as possible.

When the last bell finally rang, Sora ran outside to the school gates and waited to see where Kairi went. He waited like Riku wanted him to, now he was finally going to speak to her. "Where are you," he murmured to himself.
