She looked at her phone out of habit and in vain; there had been no call.

It was an exciting sort of day, one that Olivia felt she had been hearing about for ages. To hear her father say it, it was an extremely important day; she knew that was a slight exaggeration on his part. Her father was excitable and prone to exaggerations when it came to his work, which he loved greatly, merging with his family, which he held in equally high regard. So the fact that he had been pestering both herself and her mother about this particular evening for weeks was not one that Oli let annoy her; she found herself grinning as she watched her father scamper around their family home in only half of his desired finery, muttering under his breath about ties and shoes and whether or not it would be a good idea to bring business cards with him on this particular night. Olivia's mother, a beautiful woman already dressed to perfection in a slinky gown, watched her husband dart back and forth in an generally unimpressed manner. The woman took a long draw from her cigarette and then snuffed it out in the ashtray as she shot her daughter an exasperated look.

"He has been like this for hours, Olivia." the woman said dryly, her words exhibiting perfect intonation behind a marked French accent. "Fretting, worrying; running to and fro, to and fro, never sitting even to eat! Henry!" the woman looked back to the man as he emerged from a broom closet, which he had apparently wandered into by accident. "You have noticed your daughter's here, haven't you, Henry?"

"Probably not." Olivia replied lightly as she moved to share kisses on the cheek with her seated mother. "But don't worry; I'm not offended. Oh, I parked next to the big oak... is that alright? I don't want the neighbor to complain."

"Let him complain. We're dog sitting or something for him, aren't we?" her father spoke up as he wandered back in the room. Pecking his daughter on the cheek, he took a step back and held his arms to his sides for inspection. "Well, how do I look? Presentable? I really want to make a good impression..."

"Mon cher, you shall be the most beautiful belle at the ball." Olivia's mother spoke up with a roll of her eyes as she clamored to her feet. Olivia giggled into a hand and Henry spoke up in objection to the jest.

Her parents shared a relationship that hinged on jest, but their daughter knew they were both looking forward to the evening before them. Henry worked for a large cooperation that seemed, in her limited knowledge, to offer everything under the sun. The man worked for a small but growing department in Human Resources, and was deeply dedicated to the company that he saw as a good one, and a beneficial one. As a result, he was apt to drag his wife and only child to any function the company put on. Sometimes it was a charity benefit, sometimes a company picnic; but this evening ball seemed to excite him even more then jaunts in the past. He wasn't alone; her mother had been to plenty of fancy balls in her past, but Olivia had not, and, as a result, she was almost as excited as her father for the night to come. It was a chance to be in rich circumstances, around influential people; a chance to try delicious foods and fancy drinks; a chance to wear a fancy dress and imagine, even momentarily, that she was in the midst of some sort of movie. Yes, Oli was excited about the evening before her, so excited that she had almost forgotten the only event that had threatened to cast a shadow on her fancy evening. Her boyfriend, a young man she had been dating only a few weeks by the name of Drew, had called the day before to apologetically report that he would not be accompanying her to her father's soiree. Her parents, who seemed to secretly or not-so-secretly disprove of the young man, were delighted; Oli, disappointed. She was crazy about that guy, but she was determined not to let his absence ruin her night. There would be other dates, she told herself firmly.

"You know..." she said teasingly. "If the two of you don't hurry, you're going to be late to your fancy party. I told Xia that I'd meet her at the front door... I don't want to be late!"

Xia, Oli's best friend, was the extra sunshine that made the evening a little more exciting. Sure, Drew wasn't going to be there, but Xia was vivacious and full of spunk; Oli never failed to have a good time when she was around. Besides, girl time with Xia was the best remedy for bruised feelings. Sure, showing up to the event might be advantageous to her father's career in some way, but she was far happier with the prospects of having someone around to get her mind off of things.

"Kid has a point." her father said fondly. He took a deep breath as if to steady himself, then grinned at them nervously. "Let's get out of here."

Olivia grinned and rolled her eyes, then moved out of the way as her mother and father finished collecting their possessions. Olivia had come from her apartment prepared; while the two murmured to one another, the brunette took a moment to slip her phone from her clutch and peer at the little screen in anticipation. It was immediately followed by the sting of disappointment. There was no text from Drew; hadn't been since the night before. A small sigh escaped her and she buried the device as deeply as it could be in her little purse, resolving to abstain from checking for messages for the rest of the evening. The front door opened and she blew her bangs from her face, her smile popping back into place as she followed her mother and father out the door and to the exciting evening that was sure to follow.

The drive had been a quick one; her father knew all the secret shortcuts of the city, and his knowledge had a young man in a uniform driving their car to private parking in no time. Oli found herself rapidly growing impatient with the polite introductions that followed; as soon as was possible she excused herself and made her way through the growing crowd to the entryway. A sheepish grin got her around the door attendant, and it was with a relieved sigh that she paused, clasping her hands before her and peered around expectantly. Sure, she was a few minutes early to their appointed meeting time, so perhaps she was in for a wait. The brown eyed girl had no problem doing so, and spent the moments until her friend appeared pondering over the night's planning, on whether or not she should have insisted on picking Xia up, and on whether or not her promises of delicious food would stand up to inspection.

There was a soft murmur in the room around him, murmurs of excitement and barely concealed anticipation. Voices combined to make a single anonymous whisper that seemed to echo, yet fell dead against the ears of those that listened. Of course, Elliot wasn't listening; not really. Sure, he was just as concerned with the coming event as the rest of the sly eyed whisperers were; he didn't know of a single one of his kind who wasn't when it came to this particular time. It was one of the single most important times in the infinity that vampires stretched their consciences along, one blip on forever that required one's utmost attention. That singular peak of excitement; the Hunting. A blood drinker's very life depended on it. And Elliot would always consent that it was probably one of very few things their kind could justifiably get excited about. But the whispers had been growing in volume and lacking in content; it was always the same murmurings that chanced him were he to listen upon them, always the same planning, always the same projections and predictions. They had been interesting to eavesdrop on at first; now the dark haired male had grown quite tired of them. It would be a godsend, if God there be, that he wouldn't have to listen to such talk for another millennium.

He'd have said so, were someone to ask. But no one did, so he kept his mouth shut.

The evening's party was to take place in a massive ballroom rented out in the center of the city. The 'official' reasoning for the party, Elliot was told, was a celebration of the company's thirtieth anniversary. The company was a necessary ruse. Monetary income, of course, was rarely an issue for most vampires; a benefit of living forever was that one had an infinite amount of time to accumulate wealth. But wealth that didn’t appear to have a source was always in question; by living under the mask of the company, the vampire coven that ran it had a legitimate excuse for living the way they did. Thirty years was impressive, and called for a large celebration for all employees. Attendance of all employees, with family in tow, was subtly demanded. It was a good show, Eli supposed, but the elaborate set up had come with its own uniquely amusing situations. For example, earlier in the day he had been asked to deal with a problem with the catering. Catering; how ironic! Elliot himself and those like him would eat none of the food that had been set out so carefully; they gained sustenance only from human blood. The catered food was for the human guests… oh, and because a party without food would be seen as strange by the humans. Of course. Little details that would contribute to appearances; it was amazing the things people that didn't have to sleep had the time to notice.

Of course, if he thought about it, the situation got even more ironic. For the party to which the vampire coven was paying such rapt attention to was not just an anniversary celebration. Oh, the anniversary was a convenient excuse, but the real reason was to get a large group of humans together, to size them up. The vampire race had reached their thousand year mark, one of many, and it required special attention from the immortals. Vampires were graced with strength, beauty, durability and immortality, all gifts received when the blood of a human being was ingested. But it was a system that needed supplementation every thousand years with a special sort of blood from a special sort of human. A thousand years had come and gone, and the party was designed to be an ornate hunting ground. Every vampire in the coven would be smiling, dancing, speaking sweet words, raining compliments… whatever it took to get close to each of the humans present. Close enough to catch a clear scent; close enough to tell if that human was of the sort that the vampire needed.

From where he stood observing the ballroom, he had to admit that the person who had taken it upon themselves to decorate, whoever that was, had done a marvelous job. The dark wooden floors were reflected in the room-wide mirrors that covered the ceiling between classic Italian buttresses and recesses crafted of wood, and the tasteful but noticeable decorations of the room were of silver and pearl. The caterer had delivered the speed and service that he had promised; the entire back wall of the establishment was lined with linen tables practically overflowing with an assortment of food that the humans were sure to find appetizing, while a stiff-backed man with an alarming mustache stood by a separate table to serve beverages that ranged from wines to sodas. The room was wired with an excellent stereo system, but the decision had been made to forgo it; a live string ensemble stood near the back, the long, drawn out notes of their tuning filling the hall without echoing unpleasantly. And, of course, all of the windows that could have let in rays from the setting sun had been tastefully covered with light hued curtains of a heavy, impenetrable fabric. Overall, it was a delightful setup, one sure to gain the approval of human and vampire guests alike.

Not feeling in an extremely chatty mood; the vampire avoided the amused and excited grins of his vampire coven, scanning the ballroom for Jack, his closest friend and confident. He wasn't the only one; vampires everywhere were seeking to identify one another, to pinpoint their locations so as best to monitor one another throughout the evening. The Thousand Year Feeding, the Hunting; it really was quite the event.

The band stood at the ready, breathed in as one, and laid string to strings; a solid, beautiful note started a light, inviting tune. Apparently the party had begun, and not a moment too soon. Elliot was getting hungry.

                                          "MOTHER!"

The feminine screech carried through the house, its inhabitants rolling their eyes at the sound. An older woman, seated in the living room on the first floor, stood with a sigh and turned her back on the others in the room to ascend the stairs. An older gentlemen, who had been seated beside the woman, chuckled and stroked his graying beard, his dark eyes alight with humor. The woman shot her husband an exasperated look from over her shoulder before disappearing upstairs, only to find herself in the lair of her only daughter.

The girl in question, Xia, was currently seated on the floor, piles of rumpled clothing heaped around her slender and fuming form. Her almond shaped eyes were narrowed dangerously, burning holes into her closet, and her shapely arms were crossed stubbornly over her ample chest, her long hair in disarray. The woman sighed and leaned against the door frame.

                                          "What is it now Mingxia?"

Xia swiveled her head around to turn her glare on her mother. "Nothing! I have nothing to wear! Do you realize how unacceptable that is?!"

Xia's mother swallowed her laughter, for she knew it would only further upset her daughter. Moving forward into the room, the woman crouched beside Xia and pushed through the heaps of fabric, pulling loose a green dress. She held it up for Xia to see and titled her head slightly to the right. "What about this? It would look lovely with your eyes and gold jewelery."

Xia stared at her mother with wide eyes, mouth agape. "I can't wear that! It's far too modest and simple!"

Shaking her head, Xia's mother dropped the dress on the floor and stood, holding up a finger to silence Xia and silently inform her to wait a moment. Turning, the older woman left the room, and returned a few minutes later with another dress in hand. Noting a slit in the dress, Xia raised a single brow curiously and held out her hands to take the dress. Xia's mother grasped one of her daughters hands and pulled her to her feet before placing the dress in Xia's outstretched arms. "Try this one on."

Xia nodded, flung her clothing off, and then, with her mother's help, slide and wiggled into the dress. It was a perfect fit - thank goodness she and her mother were practically the same size - and the wide slit up the front right of the dress promised a night full of open stares and slack jaws from the men. The corners of her lips slowly curled into a sly smile, her hands caressing her sides as she marveled at herself in the mirror.

"Yes. This will do nicely. Thank-you mother."
The young woman swiftly kissed her mother on the cheek, smiling brightly. Her gaze darted to rest on the clock beside her bed, and she shrieked when she noted the time. "s**t! I'm going to be late! I promised I'd meet Oli at the front and now she's going to be kept waiting for me!" Xia would be damned if Oli spent a single moment alone at tonight's party, and the fact that she was certain to now be late - and all because of a stupid dress - killed her.

Deciding she had no choice but to travel on all fours, Xia threw the dress off, bundled it in her arms and then raced down the stairs in nothing but her underwear. Her father, now reading the newspaper, merely waved goodbye as she passed, while a male pack member around Xia's age, who had been seated across from Xia's parents, watched her leave with wide eyes. As a werewolf, seeing fellow pack members in the nude was nothing, for it was a common occurance. However, Xia was one of the few, single young ladies in the pack, and the boys her age couldn't help but lust after her. She shot the young man a quick wink before racing out the front door.

Xia's house, a modest two-story, brick building, stood on the outskirts of town, on the border of the vast forest that was her back yard. Numerous other similar homes sat on either side of Xia's home, and all of them belonged to pack members. They couldn't exactly live in caves, like the old days, so the pack had to make do with the next best thing - living in homes as neighbors between the forest and the city. It was a comfortable lifestyle, but a nuisance at the same time, especially for Xia - keeping your true self and life from your best friend, who happened to be a human, was a tough thing to do.

After tying the dress and a pair of back ballet flats she had snatched on the way out to her left leg, Xia dropped to the ground on all fours and willed the change. Moments later, a sleek brown wolf stood in her place and bounded off toward town, sticking to shadows and alley ways as much as was possible, to avoid contact with humans. Once she was down the street from the ballroom, where the party was to be held, Xia ducked into a dark alley and shifted back, slipping the shoes onto her dainty feet and wiggling once more into the dress. It was a little more difficult this time, without the aid of her mother, but she managed. Darting out of the alley, she jogged to the front of the designated building, combing her fingers through her hair until it was soft to the touch. Thankfully, she had done her make-up before she had began her search for a dress.

As expected, Oli stood on the front steps of the building, and Xia instantly felt guilty. However, glancing to the side, she caught the sight of Oli's parents entering the building, and her heart unclenched. Seemingly, Oli had just arrived and hadn't been waiting long at all. Beaming at her best friend, Xia raced forward to throw her arms around the girl, enveloping her in a warm and friendly hug.

"Sorry if I kept you waiting."
She said, just in case Oli had been waiting. "Now let's get this party started!"

The night held such promise and yet Benjamin - better known as "Jack" - couldn't help the yawn that escaped through parted lips. Situated near the far right corner of the room, Jack folded his arms across his broad chest and sighed, leaning casually against the wall, his light eyes darting about the room in a lazy fashion. Numerous vampires were already in attendance, awaiting the arrival of the human populace eagerly. He could see the excitement on their faces and hear it in their hushed voices. Some held sparkling glasses of heady wine in their hands, ready to put on a facade for the humans. He couldn't help but chuckle at this.

Tonight marked yet another anniversary of a thousand years passed, and much like every other anniversary, the vampire coven had to group and feed from the necks of particular humans. On a night such as this, not just any blood would do. Should a vampire not take the blood of that special human on an anniversary...Well, lets just say the consequences weren't pleasant. For a moment, Jack allowed his mind to wander and conjure up the face of the human he would feed from. Finding the human was the easy part, but convincing them to allow the feeding was a different story entirely. However, he had little trouble with this task in the past, and didn't expect any different this time around.

As he continued to periodically glance around, he spotted Elliot in the near distance, standing alone, and looking as bored as Jack currently felt. His lips curving into a slow smile, Jack pushed away from the wall sauntered over to his friend, his hands stuffed in the pockets of his ebony slacks. His steps were light, but in the large, half-empty ballroom, the sound carried a little more then he would have liked. Reaching Elliot's side, he shot his friend a smirk, his right hand reaching out of his pocket to run through his long, dark locks. He shook his bangs out of his eyes absently.

"Looking for me?" Jack teased, noting earlier how Elliot had seemed to be searching the room with his eyes for something, or someone.

A vampire woman, with deep red hair and adorned in a revealing green gown, passed the gentlemen duo and smiled invitingly at Jack. Once upon a time, Jack and the woman - Melissa - shared a love for one another. They had been an adored couple for years, and their relationship had been praised by many of their brethren. Until he realized she was seeing someone else as well. Painfully, Jack had called everything off, and for many years, he had turned his back to his coven, his heart hardened by her betrayal. But that was hundreds of years ago, and Jack had long since moved on, although his trust in women certainly had taken a beating. He pointedly ignored the woman, and she swept away, appearing hurt. Jack couldn't have cared less.

Soft music filled the room, signaling the beginning of the occasion. Jack straightened his form eagerly, and just then, the front doors opened to reveal an older couple. However, one glance told him it was merely the human man behind this event, and his wife. He noted the disappointment in the faces of the vampires around him, mirroring his own. However, seconds later, the doors opened again to reveal two very attractive looking young ladies, not but a few years younger then himself and Elliot in appearance. He leaned forward, catching their fresh scents in the air...and then paused, eyes wide. While one of the women was indeed human, the other was...not.

Assuming he must be mistaken, Jack tasted the air again, and by the looks of barely concealed horror on the faces of those around him, he knew this time he was not wrong. The other was a werewolf. Scowling, Jack crossed his overs over his chest.

"Well. This is going to be interesting."

Oli had taken to rocking back and forth a bit childishly on her heels, alternating from lacing her fingers together before her, then behind, then before again, just to pass the time. Of course, there was not much time to pass; the little brunette had been prepared for something of a wait, but it was wasted preparations. No sooner had her parents took themselves through the door at her back then arms were thrown around her and she found herself toppling to the side. Her surprise was sudden but fleeting; as soon as she heard the voice a wide smile stretched her lips. She knew that voice! Olivia giggled and steadied herself before returning her friend's hug wholeheartedly. It was such a relief to see Xia; despite the fact that she had steeled herself to be cheerful for the evening, it was a far easier thing to do with the girl herself standing before her. The mood was instantly more lighthearted, in Oli's opinion.

"Well, I was just about to give up on you..." Olivia tried to keep her expression serious, but she really didn't have it in her; she was grinning in a heartbeat. "Just kidding! We just got here ourselves. I was actually worried that you'd be waiting around for us, as it was. Mom and Dad took forever to get ready... especially Dad. You should have seen him, Xia; he was going nuts! "

She almost launched into more details, sure that they would amuse. But then she remembered that they were outside of a fancy party, one the two of them were expected to depend. After all, the two of them were all dressed up; it would be a shame to not go in. Xia was looking slinky and even more gorgeous then usual, and even Olivia's dress had her feeling her age as opposed to the childish frivolity that was her norm. Why linger in doorways? Olivia felt pretty sure that doing so was bad luck. It was time to get to the party, before her excitable father came looking for them. Reaching to take her friend's wrist, she gave it an encouraging squeeze and a gentle tug towards the entryway. Back to nearly bouncing on her heels, she reached to take her friend's hand and gave it an excited squeeze.

"Ah, what am I babbling at you for out here? You look amazing, so let's hurry inside so we can show off." she said, sticking her tongue out at her friend playfully. "The music's already starting! Come on, come on! Let's go!"

Apparently unable to help her excited little urgings, Olivia, tugged her friend through the ornate wooden doors that separated the ballroom from the rest of the world. Ignoring the slightly disproving looks on the faces of the door attendants, Oli didn't wait for a wave through of acknowledgment as she paused, taking in the beautiful layout before them. Gently releasing her friend's hand, she leaned closer to her to speak in a soft whisper, as if afraid being overheard would somehow offend their ornate surroundings.

"Wow, look at this place, Xia! It's so beautiful..." she murmured, struggling to resist the urge to start hopping in place again. "Where should we go first? Think there's a schedule we're supposed to follow or something?"

[ O.O.C.: Sorry this took so long again... I remembered that they're supposed to actually be wearing fancy clothes when I saw your post. While looking at pretty dresses, I got distracted. *fails* Also, I'm sorry it's not the best post; my Mondays are 12 hour days, and my brain's a little fried. ^_^; ]

A voice spoke up, and Elliot's dark eyes slid sideways, a slight smile twitching at his lips instinctively. He was infinitely grateful that it wasn't any other vampire that had spoken; he had been hearing quite enough of the chattering as an eavesdropper... he wasn't quite sure he could handle it being directed to him specifically without resorting to rudeness. Which, on a normal evening, he would just accept as a necessary side effect of delivering truth, but it was one of those classy soirees; Elliot was beginning to think that wanton rudeness would be a little uncalled for on such a night. But as he turned to Jack, he grinned and, considering the circumstances, that was saying something.

"Where have you been hiding?" he asked, choosing to ignore the question. "I'm glad these parties only happen once every thousand years; I don't think I could stand all of this.... excitement if it came any sooner." he admitted dryly.

There was movement to the side, and Eli looked towards it automatically. Ah, it was Melissa; the sudden tension and hurt was instantly tangible in the air. He didn't comment as the woman moved away disappointed; as the dark haired vampire stared after her, there was no sympathy on his face. Sure, it had been a pitiful situation, what had happened between Jack and Melissa. Sure, he had been happy for them. But he was loyal to Jack, not Melissa, and when the latter made the decision to betray the former, Eli had clearly not been on Melissa's side. The woman moved away, and Elliot watched her go in something that was almost irritation. So he was distracted, his mind mired in the past, when Jack spoke again.

"Hm?" he replied simply out of habit, turning back in the direction he had previously been facing. Humans were starting to move into the ballroom and the vampire's excitement was surely beginning to spike, but this clearly was not what had drawn Jack's attention. What had became immediately apparent; the scents danced across his nose and the vampire twitched, his lips pulling into a frown. That scent... no, it couldn't be. Surely not. But there was no mistaking that scent, not in a room full of vampires. His dark eyes locked on the apparent source: the open door, and the two young women moving through it. "Can't be..!" he murmured in disbelief. "Surely one of them wouldn't be as idiotic as to..."

His voice trailed off as he glanced around the room, half expecting this all to be some sort of joke. It was not; it was obvious by the expressions on once elated faces. There was indeed a werewolf in their midst. And what was more, she was strikingly easy to identify. The werewolf was one of the newcomers, the one donning an eye-catching ensemble in vivid reds and golds. He studied her closely, trying to divine just what purpose she might have in being there. Surely it wasn't some sort of trick or strange, strange sort of trap? No, surely not. From what he knew, werewolves weren't the sort to work alone. And surely she wasn't undercover. Her scent was practically a beacon, and even if it weren't, she was far too striking a woman to blend in with the humans that would be in attendance. What was going on?

"Interesting... well, that's one word for it." he said under his breath. "What should we do? It looks like she's accompanying a human... if any of us were to openly confront her, it would make quite a scene. Especially some of the ones already on the floor. They're young... they might make the humans nervous."

                                                      [ O.O.C.: Also, sorry here. Brain died. >__> ]
