“I give myself ( such ) very good advice....”
✖•••✖•••✖•••✖•••✖

There wasn't much Alice Diamond was willing to say that she wasn't capable of doing. She was a Wonderlandian through and through, and as such she held a deep sense of pride in her land and her people. The young blonde liked to think of herself as a patriot in that way. She could deal with the problems of Wonderland, she could stay open minded, she could deal with anything that came her way. But there was one large, distinctive thing that the blue eyed girl could not do, and that was allow things to go on as they had been under the Queen of Hearts.
Wonderland was a wild, impish place, full of things and people beyond even the most inventive of imaginations. But the politics were as steady and long lived as any world's; in specific the Heart Monarchy, the Card Family that had held the crown for longer then Alice could remember. Maybe once, when Wonderland was ruled in equal parts by Hearts, Diamonds, Spades, and Clubs alike, the Heart clan had good intentions for the homeland they loved so well. But that had been long, long ago. Far before the Monarchy had been established, far before Alice had been born, and certainly far before the Heart Monarchy ordered the Diamond Card Family into disarray. Those slow to act had been executed in the name of treachery; the few to slip away were banished into exile.
Alice wished she could say she knew that there were more Diamonds in existence other then herself and the aged mystic known only as the Duchess. It would have filled her with a feeling of relief, of justification to rebuild somewhere and make the Diamonds what they used to be in a peaceful sort of way. But something in Alice's heart told her that believing in such a thing would yield no pleasure, no benefit; serving as nothing but a hopeless distraction. Alice was one of two that remained of the once illustrious Diamond Family... which meant that it was up to these final two to seek revenge.
As she stood looking at her reflection in the mirror, Alice could detect no weakness in her expression, no wavering in her stance. She wasn't sure she looked the part of a revolutionary or a terrorist, or whatever it was her vengeance had led her to become. Only her white and blue uniform allowed her to look even the slightest bit professional... not something she allowed to worry her overmuch, seeing as the vorporal blade strapped to her hip usually aided in the girl's being taken seriously. There was no smile on her face; there was nothing to smile about. Things were going to get very dangerous, starting today.
After tense, tense weeks, the Queen of Hearts had proposed a meeting and good will exchange. Her Knight for Alice's right hand man, her skilled Cheshire Cat. Serving as both bargaining tools and representatives of the organizations they represented, it was hoped that the exchange of dignitaries would result in a coming to terms and a return of political peace to Wonderland. Alice got a glimpse of her grin turning dark before she turned away from the mirror and headed for the entrance of her tent. Perhaps the Queen of Hearts would undertake this exchange with that intention... but Alice would not. She was not sending a dignitary in hopes of making her demands known, but her best assassin who would make their demands pointedly clear when he separated the Queen's head from her body.
Underhanded? Perhaps. Alice didn't care much about the particulars; the motto of her campaign was 'Whatever it takes'.
"Alright... it's almost time." she called out as she stepped free from the tent and scanned the camp. Her followers stared back boldly, tense but ready for what they knew was to come. "Where's Cheshire?"
"Right here..." his voice came from behind and to her right, and the smallest of smiles lit Alice's face as she glanced at the man. He walked without making a single sound, wide grin never leaving his features. If he was nervous, he sure as heck didn't show it. "Where else would I be? It's the big day..."
"Right." she agreed, looking back to her gang of troublemakers. "A lot can go wrong today, so remember your orders. Cheshire and I go alone. Pack A is to follow at a distance and watch from the trees. Unless we come under direct attack do not allow yourselves to be seen. After the exchange is made we do not interfere with the Queen of Heart's departure from the meeting place. Understood?"
General murmurs of consent answered her, and Alice nodded to herself before looking back to Cheshire.
'Alright... here goes nothing.'
"Ok... let's go, Cheshire."

“Then it doesn't ( really) matter which way you go.”
✖•••✖•••✖•••✖•••✖

The Cheshire Cat was excited.
He had never really been one to get excited about usual things, like the birth of a baby momrath or the successful saving of a troop of Wonderlandians from the hungry jaws of a Jaberwock. Boring things like the rising of a new sun weren't enough to make his golden eyes light up with interest, and completing something mundane only made his purple and black striped ears lie flat with his yawns. No; there was nothing interesting in the boring and mundane, nothing to take a second look at in the commonalities of living simply, following orders, and going about other common elements that he had seen others from his homeland embrace. No... Cheshire needed more then that.
Revolution, however, was right up his alley. When young Alice Diamond had approached him all those many years ago with fire in her eyes and a plan to overthrow the Hearts Dynasty in mind, he he purred so loudly he had frightened away a local family of Bread and Butter Flies. He had found himself to be a natural at the underground trade, and when it came to following the orders of his leader he did them with seamless precision. He had nothing against the Heart Dynasty in particular, but he was restless, bored. He needed someone to rage against, something to fight against. Why not the Queen of Hearts? Just because he didn't hate her didn't mean he liked her.
So when Alice gave the command to move out, he was practically hopping with anticipation. Of course, not visibly; no cat was that free with his emotions. Still, there was a sort of smug eagerness to him that was impossible to contain as he slunk along at Alice's side, his golden eyes never pausing as they traced back and forth along the trail. Everything was familiar, for Cheshire spent much of his time on the move, memorizing different escape routs and vantage points, just in case.
"Cheshire..." Alice spoke softly as they moved from the clearing into the trees that surrounded it. He didn't look to her, allowing his silence to stand as acknowledgment. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
"What's this? Is our great commander having second thoughts..?" the replied, his grin slightly vicious.
"Of course not." she replied in mild irritation. "But it's your hide on the line, not mine. I just want to make sure once and for all that it's what you really want to do."
"I wouldn't have offered to do it if I wasn't." the Cat chuckled in an undertone. "Don't think too much, alright?"
"Watch who you're giving orders to, underling..."
The Cheshire Cat laughed again at this; nothing amused him more then board line fury in his banter. The remainder of the trip was made in silence, and the two never slowed as they moved. They had set up the exchange point as far from their base as they could, picking from the locations that the Queen had offered in the furthest corner of the Dark Forest. It was the middle of nowhere, but the likelihood that the Queen could get an ambush team into place before they could was minimal.
'Everything seems quiet...' he mused to himself as the trip came to an end and the two moved into the designated clearing. 'I guess they're not here yet... but that's ok. We can wait.'

xxxxxLight glistened through red cloth that covered black framed windows as the sounds of happy creatures chattered outside. Everything seemed so happy and cheerful outside of the window but inside everything seemed slightly odd. However, only if whoever looked inside was an outsider. In all reality, any Wonderlandian who had the nerve to peek into this room could easily spot the beauty and reason for it's looks. The red hearts coating the black walls, the white accents here and there, the red heart rug, the red drapes, the heart decals on the furniture. Even the stupidest Wonderlandian could easily tell that this room was the room of the Queen of Hearts, also known as the Queen of Wonderland.
A moaning yawn could be heard from inside of the red drapes the hid the bed from peering eyes. A silhouette could be seen sitting up and stretching arms above its head. A pale leg slipped between red and a body slowly followed. The Queen of Hearts let out a yawn as she stretched once more, her heart covered nightgown rising to an even more scandalous height than before. Pushing both her hands under her hair she lifted the light blonde locks before letting them fall back into place. Grayish blue eyes stared straight ahead as the Queen walked towards the large black armoire, red hearts jumping from its wooden features. Inside of the furniture peace were many dresses of red, black, and white. Quite a few were covered in hearts and many had some matching pieces hanging from the same hanger. If one did not know her title they would have thought her fairly insane with her heart fetish but she was simply very proud of who, and what, she was.
Pulling a tri-colored frill dress onto her pale body she started her morning routine. Her hair was brushed exactly one hundred times and her teeth brushed for exactly two minutes. After everything was perfectly done the beauty of hearts left her chamber and headed down the hall, walking perfectly on the long hall rug adorned with hearts. Even with the soft rug beneath her feet the soft sound of heels clicking could be heard. The sound only increased as the Queen stepped from the rug and turned to stare down the large staircase. Slowly, the female descended the grand stairway, watching servants stop and bow or curtsey in her wake. Such a beautiful thing it was to be Queen.
Once at the bottom of the steps the Queen of Hearts glanced around the room, trying to spot a specific individual. "Where is the Mad Hatter?" her sweet voice echoed as she swept the room with her eyes once more, "He is late."
"HAPPY UNBIRTHDAY YOUR MAJESTY!!!" a voice announced loudly as an image popped out in front of the Queen, a bright smile on the male's face, a teapot in one hand and a cup in the other, "But really, your majesty, I am not late. I simply waited to surprise you on such a wonderful unbirthday day! Tea?! It really is the best the first thing in the morning!"
The cheerful insanity of the man before her did not even make the Queen flinch. Instead she let a very small smile come to her lips, a nod to her head, "Of course, Mad Hatter. But I believe that I have something else in mind for this morning's cup of tea. Or have you forgotten our little deal with Miss Alice of Diamonds?" Turning on her heel, the Queen of Hearts started to head from the mansion which she resided, somewhat ignoring the chatter behind her.
"Something other than tea for Tea? Could such a thing be possible?!" the Mad Hatter questioned loudly as he ran after the Queen, pouring tea the whole way, "Oh! The Alice child, yes, yes! I remember!!!"
A card bowed to her before her feet touched the ground from descending yet another set of stairs. Stepping on his knee she lifted herself up to be carried on her small journey. There was no way her royal feet would be dirtied with the disgusting soil which God knows who's feet have trampled upon and God knows what creature has left what sort of things on it.
"Come, Mad Hatter. We shall not be late for our meeting. T'would be rude," the Queen said with a slightly evil smile as she turned from looking at the male and stared straight ahead. As the ride began she started to go over the Mad Hatter's instructions once more. She was not going to let anything fail because of that disgusting Diamond offspring. She was not going to let such a person destroy her reign of Wonderland.

Oh happy days! Oh happy joy-joy day of happy joy-joy days! T'was a wonderful thing this wonderful day! Why may you ask? Because it was his unbirthday! Whose unbirthday you may ask? Why the Mad Hatter's of course! And who was the Mad Hatter? Why it was this young man currently bouncing around in joy as he poured tea into his tea cup and swung it about with the sloshing and the spilling and the cheer. For you see, it was not just his unbirthday but also the unbirthday of a very dear friend, the Queen!!
"A very merry unbirthday to me, to me. A very merry unbirthday to you, to you! A very merry unbirthday to us, to us!" sung the merry male as he danced alongside the Queen who rode up in the air, carried by a few of her noble cards. His feet skipped and lolled this way and that as he danced and drank and sung. Though many may question why he was so happy. After all he was currently dancing and singing to what could very possibly be his death. Who knew what the "lovely" young Alice would do to him once she had him in her grasp. But then again he wasn't exactly a very sane young man and was never very serious. In fact, the Mad Hatter was currently entrusted with the task of killing Alice but no one would have guessed by looking at him. At first glance he just looked like an insane dancing idiot, bouncing around and singing of unbirthdays and flinging around a teapot and cup. Plus his wardrobe wasn’t exactly normal either.
"Come now, Your Majesty! Have some tea! Sing with me! T'is a very happy day! It is your unbirthday after all! We must celebrate!" Mad Hatter exclaimed in joy as he tossed the tea pot in the air and caught all of the tea drops into his cup as they fell, "Here! Take a sip! It's good for the mind, body, soul, and of course the heart!" He all but shoved the cup into the Queen's face as he insisted she drink. Somehow the boy had magically appeared beside the Queen, standing upon the arm of where she sat, bending over to offer her the cup. "You know you want to!" The diamond card attached to his hat swung slightly in the Queen's face, her eyes following it before a hand snapped up to snatch the card. The Mad Hatter yelped slightly as he grabbed his hat with the hand holding the tea pot, tea flinging slightly from the spout.
"What...is this...?" the Queen asked as she yanked on the card enough to bend the hat and put the card at eye level for the male clad in red.
"Why, that is a diamond card your majesty! But if you look at it a certain way it can be an elongated square...almost like a--"
"Silence!" The Queen demanded as she stood up suddenly, almost making her cards fall from the sudden unbalance. Her eyes seemed to fill with the furry of fire as she took a step closer to the Mad Hatter who bent slightly backwards, barely keeping his balance. "Why. Do you. Have this disgusting card. On. Your. Hat?" Her voice was slow and angry as she got closer and closer to the leaning boy.
"I thought t'would be appropriate, your majesty! After all, I am to live with the Diamond child, Alice. I thought maybe it would be a slightly homey touch, you know? And then I wouldn't look so out with my hearts and I already am always wearing red and--"
"Stop!" The cards halted quickly and both riders were practically thrown from the sudden stop. However, things were not all muddy for the now very pissed Queen, "I didn't mean you, you imbeciles!!! Look what you did!" The Queen of Hearts pointed to her feet under which a muddy Mad Hatter laid, his tea pot and cup held in the air to save them from the brown doom he had fallen victim to. "Clean him up!! Hurry!!!"
While a few cards moved the Queen to 'safety,' others worked on trying to clean up the mud. The Mad Hatter was simply examining himself before placing his hands on his hips, "Well now I really don't think this is a very good look for me. Brown really isn't my color. Maybe a purple or a green...perhaps even mauve but never brown. I really don't think I'm an autumn, do you?" He pointed with his tea pot towards the female examining her nails. "Fine then, ignore me, see what I care," he dramatized as he flourished his tea pot more, "I'll just drink my tea and be jolly. T'would be a shame to be saddened on my unbirthday. It only comes every 364 days a year after all." Moving to pour his tea a sudden intake of breath from the cards silenced everything. Nothing moved as the tea pot stayed in a pouring position, nothing coming from the spout. The Mad Hatter's face was frozen in slight shock before his lip began to quiver slightly. His tea was gone! His pot was empty!!!
Cards flew this way and that, running in circles as panic erupted. No one knew what the Mad Hatter did when his tea pot was empty but surely he did not have his name for nothing and everyone had heard stories.
"Oh give me a break," the Queen of Hearts shouted as she marched over and tipped the tea pot further, watching the hot tea pour out into the cup, "There. And now my shoes are dirty! Clean them!"
"My Majesty! My Love! My Life! My Savoir!!!" The Mad Hatter declared as he threw his arms around the Queen, sipping his tea in the process, "I shall never fail you, I swear on my tea pots!"
"Very well, now get off and let's go. We're going to be late and a Queen is never late!" the Queen of Hearts demanded as she was lifted up and her shoes cleaned before they continued on.
The Mad Hatter continued in his jolly waltz, singing away beside his Queen. Before long his sights fell upon two figures though he was sure they were not alone. "Well lookie here! T'is the Alice of Diamonds and her little Cheshire Cat! Hello there!!" he called as he waved his tea pot at them as one would flutter their fingers high in the air. Sipping his tea he stopped before the two as he awaited the Queen to join him at his side.
"Ah, Alice...how...delightful to see you again," the Queen declared as she walked to stand next to the sipping fool, a mask of a cheerful smile upon her face, "It really has been too long."

“I give myself ( such ) very good advice....”
✖•••✖•••✖•••✖•••✖

Alice tapped her foot. She fidgeted. She shifted from the balls of her booted feet to the heels, swaying back and forth in time with some impatient rhythm in her head. Her breathing stayed even but she bit down onto her bottom lip, apparently without noticing in the slightest. The young blonde’s fingers traced repetitively over the hilt of her weapon, moving in tune with her swaying. Her eyes stayed slightly out of focus as she stared straight ahead… until she caught the slightest shift of the Cat at her side. When she glanced at him she almost started; the Cheshire Cat’s grin was as wide as she’d ever seen it. The Cat was always the smiling sort, but though it was often a teasing expression it rarely stretched to this degree.
“Something the matter?” she asked, her tone nonplussed.
“Oh, nothing…” he chuckled softly, clearly not intimidated by his friend and leader’s icy blue stare. ”I’ve just never seen you looking so nervous is all.”
“I am not nervous.” Alice sniffed. “I’m filled with anticipation.”
“I’ve never seen you so fidgety, not even when we got lost in the Garden of Talking Flowers and the Rose critiqued your appearance. You do remember that, don’t you?” the Cheshire Cat continued knowingly.
“Oh, do shut up.” Alice murmured, automatically stilling her flurry of motion as she scowled at nothing in particular. If there was one thing she hated almost as much as the Hearts Dynasty, it was the Garden of Talking Flowers. The flowers that resided there would be the first to which her impatient ‘justice’ would be turned towards once she had completely wrapped up this business with the Queen of Hearts. “I’m not nervous. I’m just… excited. This is it, Cheshire. This is everything.”
And it turns out Alice was only half lying. Oh, she was nervous; nervous in a sort of way that made bread ‘n’ butterflies stir into motion in the deepest pit of her stomach. But it was a nervousness spurned on by anticipation; even though the woods were quiet adrenaline coursed through her veins. At any moment there could be an attack, and unforeseen misfortune, some unpredictable mishap that would change everything. Or, at the very least, she would be walking a spy into her camp. The Queen was turning over a trusted adviser, her ‘Mad Hatter’… whatever that meant. No, Alice knew what it meant; nothing could be taken as safe. She would have to be careful.
The Cheshire Cat kept grinning, but he didn’t comment further on what Alice Diamond was or was not feeling. Keeping his stance loose he turned his angular face back and forth, cat ears flicking for signs of approach. Alice was grateful that his attention appeared to be diverted; everyone knew it was pointless to try and end an argument discussion with the Cheshire Cat. Taking a leaf from the assassin’s book Alice listened as hard as she could for hints that her fellow troublemakers that had been ordered to hide scattered in the woods. She heard nothing, and had Alice been of a less confident nature she might have jumped to the conclusion that her followers had failed to follow her directions. But she knew better then to doubt her followers; the Duchess had picked them, after all.
”Look sharp.” the Cheshire Cat purred, a glint of pleasure entering his golden eyes.
Alice didn’t question her assassin, and her body automatically tensed as she followed his golden gaze into the dark trees before them. For a long minute she heard nothing; only the Cat’s slightly twitching furred ears reassured her that something was coming. Then, very faint at first, there was the sound of footsteps, of snapping twigs… and then the Queen of Hearts emerged from the darkness, looking down on them like some goddess of victory. Seeing her made all nerves leave Alice in a rush; left behind was only a cold determination and a hardened heart. This woman and her family were responsible for so much spilled blood, Diamond blood. It was difficult for Alice to keep the sneer off her face.
She assessed the situation in a glance; the Queen had made sure to arrive in a show of her absolute power. Cards quailed around her waiting for orders, and again Alice had to struggle to hold her tongue. Starting off the ‘diplomatic’ discussion by berating the tyrant’s underlings was not what a good leader would do. She had to be smart, to mind her manners. Fortunately the salutation by the cheerful looking young man distracted her from sliding into darker thoughts that would have surely destroyed any chance of her plan’s success. This could be no other then the Mad Hatter; Alice had spent many long nights interviewing former Hearts servants or escapees from the Hearts prison and had spent countless hours pouring over every scrap of literature she could find on the current Hearts Administration. Though still not quite sure why he was mad, Alice had gathered enough to know him on sight. She didn’t address him, leveling her piercing stare at the Queen he served.
“The Queen of Hearts herself.” Alice answered lightly, her expression blank. “You’re late.”
At her side came the softest sound of a sigh; the Cheshire Cat didn’t have to speak to make his thoughts known. Alice was hardly being polite; the girl wanted to answer him that it was by no means her fault that she lacked diplomacy. But seeing as she had not yet developed the ability to put her thoughts in the minds of others and the Cheshire Cat was acting as nonchalant as possible, she did her best to keep with the niceties.

“Then it doesn't ( really) matter which way you go.”
✖•••✖•••✖•••✖•••✖

Being on alert was the only thing that could lessen the Cheshire Cat’s cryptic smile, and as he listened to the approach of the Heart entourage he could feel the expression slipping from his lips. The young man tilted his head to the side slightly, his ears flicking and his tail curling slowly back and forth to stir the grass behind him. He was the ears when Alice couldn’t hear; he was the eyes when Alice couldn’t see. For a single smug instant the purple hued cat man wondered what exactly the ambitious blonde would do without him at her side. Would she be able to think with as level a head as he had seen her exhibit in the ages that he had known her? Would she be able to maintain her control over her troops without the slightly sinister form of her assassin by her side? Would she be able to see through the wiles of the man for whom he would be exchanged?
The Queen of Hearts moved forward from the trees in glorious fashion and the Cheshire Cat almost smiled. He was never willing to admit it, but the Cheshire Cat didn’t know everything. But there was one thing he was positive of: Alice Diamond was too full of bitterness towards this woman to be anything but successful. She would do her part; he would have to do his.
Speaking of his part, the Cheshire Cat looked for a long moment towards the approaching Queen. Her outfit was immaculately clean; her appearance detailed and marinating the distant perfection of a doll. But he was not fooled; there was an undercurrent of fire in the straightness of her back and the regal, royal way in which she held herself. This was not simply a pampered royal that was parading before them, but a shrewd and calculating woman used to control. It was a control he would take from her; the Cheshire Cat would kill her. The Queen of Hearts wouldn’t know what hit her, he thought smugly to himself.
Even the Cheshire Cat wasn’t one hundred percent sure what his plans for her were; he was more of an inspiration-inspired man. Alice had never been audacious enough to dictate exactly how he completed his missions; she made due with knowing that the striped one never failed to snuff the individual whom he had been sent to meet. Of course, this was a smart decision on the blond leader’s part; though the Diamond girl technically gave the orders that were obeyed with little to no objections she knew better then to get too descriptive when it came to the Cat. It always made his hackles rise when he felt himself too pressed; several spats in their younger, beginning years had helped them establish a truce. Alice was the boss, but the Cheshire Cat was his own minister, council, and people. It was an effective position to take.
Shaking off his musings, the Cheshire Cat refocused on the matter at hand; namely the threat that now stood before them. The Cards hardly got a glance; as far as the Cheshire Cat was concerned they were of no real threat. He trusted Alice to be able to take care of that bunch, and there weren’t many fights the assassin was willing to let the young woman take part in on her own. The Mad Hatter was another issue entirely; the Cheshire Cat only lifted an eyebrow at the greetings of the exuberant man, sipping on tea as if he hadn’t a care in the world. The purple-esque man in question did not enjoy being referred to as little or any of its synonyms, seeing as he was not just a cat but a Cheshire Cat. Which, as everyone knew, made all the difference when it came to cats. None of the displeasure showed on the Cat’s face, however; he stayed smug and indifferent like any good cat should.
That didn’t last long; Alice was apparently not in the mood to be deceptively sweet tempered. Things had to go as planned and exactly as planned; the blonde apparently realized this belatedly as she corrected her temperament.
“But I suppose one should never rush a monarch; so thank you ever so much for coming.” She continued with a mock curtsy, her arms cocked her sides to hold up invisible skirt tails. “You’re right; we don’t meet nearly often enough. But I’ve so been looking forward to today, so perhaps that makes up for the time your Highness.” She straightened and flicked a hand towards the Cheshire Cat. ”I assume you know my friend? Cheshire Cat, say hello to the Queen of Hearts.”
“Charmed, your majesty.” He purred in response, lanky arms hanging casually at his sides and striped tail swaying in and out of lines of sight as it ducked and reemerged from behind his legs. “You’re looking well. Life at the Mansion has been good, I suppose?”
He couldn’t help the smile that came back to his face; he was a smiley guy by nature. Alice stayed tense at his side, but he sensed the smile that threatened to highlight her face. Certain that would destroy the brooding, strict atmosphere Alice thought she needed to be taken as a serious threat the Cat settled his weight on his back foot and took a quick listen to the woods around them. Alice’s people had frozen into absolute silence, watching from their respective vantage points in either awe or fear.
“I am pressed to point out that you certianally know how to make an impression.” he quipped.
[oh.oh.cee.: Wooooow... that sucks. It must just be that time of the year; I'm getting it on my end too. *dies a little* Smooth... and sneaky mom, lol! ]

xxxxxAn eyebrow rose lightly as the Queen of Hearts was told she was late. She couldn't help but let out a small chuckle, her hand brought to her mouth as if to stifle the noise. "Late? Tsk, tsk, my dear. Do you not understand...? A Queen is never late. She arrives exactly when she means to. I meant to arrive at this time and so I have. You are the one who has arrived early in your haste to rid yourself of your friend. Do you really dislike his company that much?" she asked as she let her hand slowly fall, clasping her fingers before her. A sickeningly sweet smile was upon her face as her fingers parted and one hand lifted to motion towards the man beside her. "This, is the Mad Hatter, a very dear friend of mine. I trust you shall treat him fairly and I do so hope you have a lot of tea. If not, I see a very hard life for you in the future and, of course, I would never want such a thing. T'would be a pity."
The one called the Mad Hatter gave a low bow to Alice before standing up and draining his cup before announcing to the forest, "Does anyone have some tea?!" His eyes peered around as no one moved. "No? Very well, I have my own." Reaching up into the band around his arm he pulled out a tea bag. Plopping onto the ground like a child he started to fiddle with the teapot and wonder how to make tea and where water would be.
The Queen ignored the man as he went about his work and she turned her attention to the cat, giving him a small nod, "Good afternoon Cheshire. And yes, the mansion has been perfect, you shall know once you arrive." Her eyes inspected the man as if he were a piece of meat. It was almost as if she were seeing if he was worthy of coming into her humble abode.
Soon, the Queen's attention turned back on Alice, watching her body movements. Her eyes landed upon the female's sword and an eyebrow was risen. "A sword?" she asked as if shocked, placing a hand over her heart, "My dear Alice! Do you really believe I was coming here to attack you!? I should have known you would be hostile towards me for my ancestors. I have done nothing but kept my blood strong as you have yours and yet you come with hostile actions towards our ideas of peace? Do you really think so lowly of me?" She took a step back with sadness in her eyes, the colors dancing as if she were about to cry. "I try my hardest to find a way to bring peace to my lands...and you come here armed? I would not be surprised if you had some of your men hidden in trees waiting to kill me. Or...or even if you are planning on having your cunning friend here kill me in my sleep. You really are a cruel, cruel woman Alice Diamonds."
"Tsk, tsk, young lady! Look what you have done!" the Mad Hatter pointed out, using his teapot as a pointer. He placed his arms around the Queen in way of comfort, patting her on the head with an empty hand, the cup not balancing on his hat. "There, there, your majesty. Do not let her rudeness bring such tears to your eyes. Tis a shame to be sad on this day! Tis your unbirthday your majesty! We must celebrate and be jolly! It is not every day that it is the Queen's unbirthday. And you!" A tea pot spout was harshly pointed towards Alice. "Put that sword away and be gone with your hostile desires!!!" His dramatic voice rang out through the trees as he took a heroic poise before the Queen.
"Now, now, calm down Mad Hatter. It is alright. I understand. Many people look at me and blame me for my ancestors’ actions. They do not understand I only want peace and nothing more. They do not understand that I thrive for liberty all across Wonderland. I love this land and my people. I love every creature inside of Wonderland and I would never get rid of any of them. Every Wonderlandian has a special purpose and a special place in my heart. I only keep this monarch because I know there are cruel and corrupt Wonderlandians out there. I know there are those who shall try to destroy things and I cannot allow that. I will not allow it. But Alice...I really thought you were different. I thought...that together we could bring the peace and prosperity back into Wonderland. But, I can see our desires are different... I shall not back out of our deal but I can wish I had done such a thing with a woman who had the same desires as my own heart." The Queen continued to put on her show as she closed her eyes and turned her back, bringing a hand to her eyes. This was beautiful! Wonderful! If she made Alice seem like the bad guy in all of this it was more power to her. Maybe she could even bring Alice's guard down and make the Mad Hatter's job all the easier.
The Queen was not a fool, not in the least. She was brilliant and observant. She always thought things through and planned out her actions. She knew whom she could control and where she could go. She knew how far she could push a person and who would fall victim to her tricks. In fact she knew that right now the Mad Hatter probably thought she really was hurt. He wasn't really that bright of a person until he actually tried to be. Not that you could ever tell when he was trying or not. But right now, it didn't matter. And the Cheshire wasn't her goal either. She figured the feline knew her like a slightly open book. Of course he didn't know all about her but surely he was sly enough to be able to see through her trick. But that did not matter. The cat was not the problem, but the human, the human who held the sword and showed hostility towards her unarmed body. Not that the Queen was unarmed and yet she was. She was armed with her men but had nothing on her body; she didn't need it. She knew that nothing would happen unless she did something and she wasn't planning on it. She knew Alice wouldn't come alone and figured her men were hiding somewhere amongst the trees. Plus the woman openly showed her weapon. And then there was the Cheshire Cat...she would never put anything past him and his insanity which could rival that of the Mad Hatter's.
A deep breath came from the Queen before she turned around with a sad smile. "I apologies for this Alice...I hope that maybe...the next time that we meet...you shall have a change of heart and you may see through your own eyes what I see through mine. My dear friend, Mad Hatter, you are now to travel with this woman. Come home safely when this is over. Cheshire, if you will please...? I need to get back home..." Turning back around she was helped up to her chair and she gave a parting smile to Alice. "Oh...and Happy Unbirthday, my good friend."
She closed her eyes lightly as the cards turned to start the journey back. Inside she had a wicked smile as her plan was set into action. Maybe Alice would fall for it, maybe not. It didn't matter. One way she would feel terrible and the other she would be flustered beyond her wits with rage that the Queen dared to treat her like an idiot. Or at least, she hoped one of the two would happen. If it didn't then this was all pointless. But it was an experiment of sorts. When she found out what happened she would know even more about Alice's limits.
Her eyes turned to the Cheshire and she gave him a small, calm smile, "So, Cheshire... Have you ever been inside of the Heart Mansion? It is really a beautiful place. I hope you enjoy your stay with me. If you have any questions, within reason, I will try my best to answer them. If you have any needs, I will personally try to make your stay as comfortable as possible."

The Mad Hatter was shocked when then Queen of Hearts bid him a merry unbirthday. The Queen had never wished him a marry unbirthday! Never ever ever! And thus, tears came to is eyes and he let out a wail of sadness. His arms were thrown around the closest thing, which just happened to be Alice, as the Queen left him. "Such a good Queen! Such a kind hearted and lovely Queen! To wish this undeserving fool a merry unbirthday!" he called loudly as he grabbed his tie and blew his nose into it in an over dramatic way, "I could never ask for more from such a lovely woman! I am honored to know such a kind and caring Queen!"
The sad thing about this whole display of affection was that it was completely real. The Mad Hatter was actually crying, actually pleased, and actually blowing snot into his tie. He hadn't been paying attention and when the Queen had suddenly changed he was all but confused. He knew he had missed something but he didn't know what. He just kind of went with it but when the Queen bid him a happy unbirthday...the dams broke! He couldn't hold it in anymore! The one thing he wished for so badly, acceptance from the Queen, he had finally received. She had finally praised him in some way and she did it when they had departed.
"I knew it! I knew she was just a shy woman who didn't know how to express her feelings. I knew she really cared and that all those names were merely her confusion in how to show she really cared about this pitiful fool!" he proclaimed to the sky as he wiped his face with his tie and then took a swig of his tea as if it were rum.
Sniffling the boy finally released Alice fully and took some deep over dramatic breaths to calm himself. As if nothing had happened he turned on his heel and smiled brightly towards Alice. "Sooooo, you are Alice Diamond! Pleasure to meet ya, madam!" he declared as he grabbed one of her hands, smashed between his cup and pot, and shook it violently, "I am known as the Mad Hatter! A true pure blood Wonderlandian from birth until death and an honorable Heart!" Releasing the woman he started to look around wildly. Had not the Queen said there were others about? Well, since he didn't see them...they must not exist! "Pray tell dear child," he addressed the blonde, resting his fist under his chin, the tea cup dangling in his fingers. His elbow was rested upon his other arm which had been flung across his waist. "I know it is my unbirthday... Is it your's, too? Because if it iiiissss...."
A deep breath was taken by the male before he started to dance around and busted out in a very familiar song, "Aaaaaaaaaaa very merry Unbirthday to me, to me! A very merry unbirthday to you, to you! Here have some tea!" Magically producing a cup from one of his pockets he shoved it into Alice's hands and poured her tea as he danced around her body, song lyrics exploded from his lips. The only pauses the Mad Hatter made was when he poured his own tea into his open mouth, his feet tapping this way and that to the instruments playing in no mind but his own. However, the Mad Hatter was fairly sad. He had altered the well known lyrics to be sung by himself. It was such a sad thing to sing such a song alone. But he had never heard the Queen sing and never expected her to join him. As the Mad Hatter danced he died a little inside. A solo was not as exciting when done alone. The Mad Hatter just never realized that solo meant alone...
"You know, dear Alice... This solo is very lonely...the Unbirthday Song should never be sung alone. As a Wonderlandian I am positive you know the lyrics...won't you...please...join me?" he asked as he looked at her with begging eyes. Would she bend to his will and join him in jolly song singing? Or would she scoff, roll her eyes, and turn her back on him, calling him an imbecile, fool, and many other large five dollar words that did not belong in the Mad Hatter's vocabulary. "Come along, dear Alice. Please do not make me sing this solo song sololy!" No, that was not a word...but it was to him! Especially if it got her to join him.
{{OOC ~ Sorry it took so long. D8 I had about an hour a day to type this week while also doing classwork cause I would get home so late. And I'll be gone all weekend for State (Speech and Debate). So please bare with me. D8}}

“I give myself ( such ) very good advice....”
✖•••✖•••✖•••✖•••✖

Alice Diamond hadn't looked happy since she had started out from her tent that morning, but the words of the Queen brought the corners of her mouth down into a defined pout. The absolute nerve of this woman! The flaxen haired revolutionary was seething under the barely maintained mask she wore, her stance tense. Everyone knew this Queen was as bad as every one before her; for the ornately dressed woman to feign such ignorance was a slap in the face of the people who had fallen to her reign. Of course, such a fact wouldn't matter at all to the Queen, but to Alice it felt like reassurance from beyond the grave: she was on the side of right no matter what anyone on the outside may say.
“I have no quarrel with your messenger.” she spoke slowly, trying to keep her temper. “And the answer to your question is that I haven't seen a single thing thus far to justify coming here unarmed. It would be foolish of me to do so, or to assume that you didn't come here with protection of some sort. We aren't at peace yet, and I don't plan to forget that fact anytime soon.”
“We're in pieces instead of a single peace, if you feel like being specific.” the Cheshire Cat chuckled.
“I brought no one but the Cheshire Cat with me because I know any other of my friends would kill you on sight.” Alice continued, blatantly lying. “And if your paranoia extends even to him... well, I don't know what to tell you. Cheshire's as gentle as a kitten, and I doubt a man who has spent his time with me advising and planning would be of any threat to you. However, I suppose with the Kingdom in the state it is your concerns are... justified. So take me being armed as a show of my justification and don't let it keep away your sleep at night.”
The Cheshire Cat's ears twitched slightly and Alice sighed; she didn't come here to argue (not that there was any arguing with the Queen of Hearts anyway). She only had to offer up another lie that would guarantee the Queen's safety in the presence of her assassin... but never got to open her mouth. Whatever Alice would say about the Queen of Hearts in the future, she would have to admit that the imperialistic woman had done something to earn the loyalty of the one she called Mad Hatter. She stared at the two nonplussed, then, despite the fact that she was loathe to look away from a possible threat, shifted to stare at the Cheshire Cat. His incredulous expression was bordering on mirthful laughter when she met his eyes. Her look clearly said 'are you sure you can deal with her?' while his clearly replied 'are YOU sure you can deal with him?' The grin was no longer hidden on the Cheshire Cat's face as he stepped forward.
"My, my, my... well on that note..." the Cheshire Cat glanced back at his friend, still grinning. "Don't get eaten by a Jaberwock."
“Ugh...” Alice muttered, but couldn't keep the concern completely from her voice as she continued softly. “Be careful, Cheshire.”
He didn't respond, but his air of confidence was impossible to miss, and Alice took it as a show of faith and took a deep breath. Relaxing she watched the Cheshire Cat move easily to the side of the Queen and mosey along, never once looking back. Alice's expression didn't change... until a pair of arms were suddenly and enthusiastically thrown around her.
“Gah! W-What in the world..?!” Alice yelped, her cheeks tinting an indignant red.
She tried to squirm away but his hold was strong; there was no way she could draw her sword like this. But it didn't appear that the Mad Hatter meant her any harm at that particular moment, lamenting the Queen as he was; and a good thing, too. Still, the thought that she was probably safe didn't ease her nerves; Alice Diamond was not a huggy person. The only person who was aloud to hug her was the Duchess, and that was because they were related! Had any of her followers pulled a move like this one she would have probably beaten them until they lost consciousness, or had the Cheshire Cat do it. As it was she could practically hear the drop jawed expressions of her minions watching from the trees; it made her groan to think about it. Before she could resort to something drastic (meaning kicking him in the shin like a child) he released her with a suddenness that almost made her stumble. The blue eyed girl caught herself just in time, and stared at the man in open disbelief.
“Appropriately named...” she murmured to herself as his absolutely wrong statement about the Queen gave way to singing. Lots of singing, a song that Alice hadn't heard since she was a little girl. It made something in her chest hurt, to remember that the last person she heard singing those words was her sweet tempered mother. “Er... I...”
Alice was torn between snapping at him, fumbling through some clumsy excuse that she couldn't sing, or waving her sword around and allowing that to serve as answer enough. But then she made the mistake of looking at him and groaned; he was giving her the puppy dog eyes. She was a not-so-secret wimp for the puppy dog eyes; if any of her men attempted it she would assign them kitchen duty minutes after obeying their little whims. Usually with fire in her eyes and tears in theirs, such as it was.
“Er... maybe some other time.” Alice finally responded, clearing her throat and turning away. “Come on, Mr. Hatter... it's best if we get out of these woods and back to base.”
Normally Alice would insist that any outsider being brought into her camp be blindfolded and lead through many diverse paths to completely scramble their sense of direction. In this particular case, however, the blonde didn't bother; the Mad Hatter would be under close watch. If he made any effort to escape to report the location of her camp, she'd simply have her people kill him. Simple problem, simple solution. Alice liked keeping things simple.
She walked before him in silence as she navigated through the trees, her eyes straight ahead but her back still tense. There was a sudden rustling in the trees as forms darted free from where they had been hiding in branches and bushes; Alice lifted a hand in acknowledgment and flicked her wrist to send her obedient followers scurrying back to the camp ahead of them.
“I want you to know that we are going to treat you fairly.” she spoke to the Mad Hatter as she moved, her tone moving back to aloof and professional. “I understand you have an... unusual sort of loyalty to the Queen of Hearts. But I won't bring harm to others just for that. Your only rules are that you stay in the camp while these talks go on. If you have any reason to leave the camp you will first fetch me or another of the higher levels. If you don't you'll be taken as a spy for the Queen and killed.”

“Then it doesn't ( really) matter which way you go.”
✖•••✖•••✖•••✖•••✖

The Cheshire Cat moved away from the silent, protective bubble of Alice Diamond's hidden regiment, his golden eyes never once betraying whether he felt uneasy, unsafe, or any other word of the sort. The truth of the matter was that he was feeling none of those emotions; the purple haired man was subtly excited, constantly grinning. When he took his place at the side of the Queen of Hearts he inclined his head in a bow, staying formal if not the slightest bit teasing. With an ease he really had no right to have the young man stayed comfortably at her side, observing the card soldiers with a meticulous eye. His initial assessment had been correct; the cards seemed to serve primarily as means of transportation. It was something he had only seen from a distance before, and it greatly amused him to see it at eye level. Amused even more (if such a thing was possible) and reassured that it would be unlikely for the bowed over servants to attack him from the side, the assassin focused on the Queen herself.
“Have I ever been inside the Heart Mansion..?” He repeated, allowing his voice to trail off thoughtfully, as if he had to search his memories to confirm truthfulness. “No, I don't believe I have. But I have heard more then a handful of good things about it. Of course, rumors tend to be warped by the ones that tell them... I am very interested to find out the truth for myself.”
Of course, Alice had asked him to memorize the layout of the Mansion in case it was needed in later schermishes, though the blond had been under the impression that the death of the Queen of Hearts would render such things unnecessary. Cheshire himself was of a curious nature, so he was only too eager to meander the halls and discover the secrets hidden withing. There was always certain to be something that would capture his interests. The Cheshire Cat was easily amused; until he was ready to carry out his mission he was more then willing to find other things to amuse himself. Curiosity usually killed the cat, but the Cheshire Cat liked to think that he was the exception to the rule.
“Well, that is a kind offer, your Highness. More then I expected, though I mean no offense.” he continued, his wide grin remaining ambiguous as if to neither confirm nor deny the truth of his words.
The offer to answer questions instantly caught his attention, and the Cheshire Cat's eyes instantly brightened as he looked over to the Queen. This was an openness he hadn't expected so soon upon officially making the Queen's acquaintance, and the Cat didn't allow his mind to linger too long on the official meanings behind the gesture, or the political pulls or sways that could make the Queen offer such a thing. Just that it had been offered made the Cheshire Cat happy. The purple haired man knew what sort of questions he would be expected to ask, but the technicalities were for later. Personal interest always had to be settled first. It was one of the Cheshire Cat's rules of living, and though he was known to break the rules the Cheshire Cat never broke his rules.
“I have to say, I do have one question on my mind, if you don't mind answering a question so quickly after offering to.” the Cheshire Cat continued, containing his expression to a content, polite expression. His eyes glittered as he met her gaze, and he kept his demeanor easy and open... or, rather, as open as the Cheshire Cat could manage, enigmatic being that he was. “I understand that peace in Wonderland is... important to all parties involved. And yet, I have to say, you seem to suspect Alice Diamond of being less then honest in her efforts to achieve this peace. So I have to ask... just what is it that leads you to hand over your adviser to her, someone you obviously hold dear?”
[[OOC: A very, very, VERY bad response. Sorry about that, and about the delay! I promise I'll get back into the rping groove once I've had a day or so to shake off this huge trip thing. I just didn't want to keep stringing you along with Cheshire's reply. *tisktisktisks* Thanks for the patience so far though! And I promise I'm usually better with this whole rping thing, honest! *sweat drops* ]]

xxxxxThe Queen of Hearts was not very surprised to hear the Cheshire Cat already suggesting a question. She knew the feline man wasn't stupid and far from slow. But to ask such a question...she knew he knew better but why not just go with it? He probably just wanted straight answers from the source instead of just listening to this and that of the lands. "Well, Cheshire...let us look at it this way. Alice Diamond's family has, for many years, been the quote unquote enemy of my family. My supposed enemy has freely handed over the very best man she has and the best man in all of Wonderland. My "enemy" has asked me to invite into my house the very man who could easily take my life as we are speaking now. Of course many would think I would keep the strongest I have close to me and yet now I have given my very best and closest to this same 'enemy.' The Mad Hatter is to me as you are to Alice and it would be the smart thing to have him walking next to you right now. But instead, he is walking with your friend Alice in the opposite direction. What leads her is the same thing that leads me. Why let her sleep soundly while I am filled with worry over if I shall see the sun rise over my lands again? The Mad Hatter may not seem like much but he can drive the sweetest woman into a homocidal maniac just by talking to her. If anything is to happen to me, then something shall happen to her. It is simply a game of copy-cat between us. We each know what the other really wishes for and we each know how the other is going to achieve it. We are both simply waiting for the other to blink at the wrong time and let everything fall into our own hands."
A smirk softly played it's way onto the Queen's face as she glanced over at the male. "I'm not going to hide secrets that are obviously facts," she stated calmly as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Her eyes turned back forward as she crossed one leg over the other. Why worry? If he killed her now then her men would just attack him, make an uproar, and the Mad Hatter would kill Alice. Sure the man seemed like a compelte idiot but he knew his job and he could do it better than anyone else. He would slowly drive her insane and she'd probably kill herself before he even got the chance to take a swipe at her. The funny thing about this all was that he would never realise he was doing it.
Upon arrival at her humble home, the guards seemed to all hold their breath. They gripped thei weapons as they watched the Cheshire Cat freely walking by the Queen's side. He wasn't bound or even being surrounded! And the Queen looked perfectly at ease! This was insanity in their minds! They knew that the enemy would be coming but really now...the Queen had nothing to stop him from doing anything to her. This was madness!
"Ah, home sweet home," the Queen of Hearts stated as she was let down to walk upon a red heart carpet that was upon the ground. Her eyes glanced over the grounds, watching her cards look confused on what to do. "Down boys, the Cheshire Cat is here on good terms, I believe we already spoke about this issue. He is to be seen as the Mad Hatter." With a wave of her hand the cards reluctantly let down their strong guard as the Queen walked by, ignoring the glares they all sent at the male feline. "So, Cheshire...what shall we do first? We have games in the back lawn, a beautiful maze, a wonderful rose garden, then there is, of course, my home to show you. So much to do, so very little time... Are you hungry, Cheshire? I can have the cooks work on something for you. Tea? Milk? Cream?" She glanced over to the cat, her nature compeltely lax and it was almost as if she were showing her grandmother around the lawn. She didn't seem to have a care in the world that her worst enemy was walking right by her.
Her footsteps soon lead her to the game grounds where her favorite time were spent. Naturally, she walked over and grabbed a flamingo by the feet, swinging it upside down. "A game, Cheshire? We can talk as we swing and I can see your skills," she stated as she swung the flamingo in circles before letting it lay upon her shoulder. She rose an eyebrow in question as she grabbed another flamingo and held it out to Cheshire. She wasn't exactly going to take no for an answer and if he said no she was probably going to force him to do it anyways. No one said no to the Queen...ever.

The Mad Hatter was hoping his puppy eyes would sway the female but instead she just focused elsewhere. Had he ears they would have fallen as a pout formed on his face. But wait, another time!? Really!? "Oh thank you Miss Alice!" he called as he gave her a tight hug from behind before spinning around her and skipped up ahead a bit. That was when he realized he had no idea where he was going and halted almost in mid skip. He paused for a second before skipping backwards and falling in step with the blonde female.
After a while the silence started to get to the chipper male. He started to fidget as he tried to find something to do. Normally he was used to the silence because the Queen was so silent but it was different with Alice. Alice was a new person he didn't know very well and he wanted to talk and get to know her! But how would he go about doing that? She didn't seem like a normal person and she wasn't a Heart... He was surprised she hadn't done anything to disrupt his sense of direction as his mind mapped out the route they were going automatically. His attention went to his hands where he started to fiddle with his fingers. He had to think of some way to get rid of this horrible silence where he could pry Alice to talking. But she didn't seem like a talker and he had to be careful. When he first tried to talk to the Queen he didn't like the outcome and he didn't want that to happen again.
So he started to talk in his mind to try to find something to talk about. Mostly his thoughts were about tea but there were some people who didn't like tea and in all fairness they needed to be slapped silly with a tea pot. But then he tried to think of something else and absentmindedly started to point out things around him in his thoughts, 'Tree...tree, tree, tree, tree, tree, tree, rock, tree, tree, twig, rock, twig, tree, tree, OH BIRD!' This was going to be a long trip...
But then he was saved! Alice spoke first! A sparkle came into his eyes as he looked towards her and listened ot what she had to say. Small tears came to his eyes as he nodded quickly, rubbing at his face, "Such a kind girl Alice Diamond! All the rumors of you are completely untrue! You are not ghastly, ugly, demonic, cruel, terrible, and a ghoul! I must declare I find a very liar by all those who have told me such tales about you!" He let his arm fall from his face as a bright smile errupted on his features. "You are nothing less than beautiful, kind, caring, and fair in any and all ways! I believe my stay with you shall be wonderful and full of cheer and joy! I cannot wait to truely start our time together Miss Alice!" Moving infront of Alice the Mad Hatter took his hat from his head and gave a deep bow, "I am at your service!"
Looking up he gave a beaming smile to Alice, placing his hat back upon his head. He took his position by her side once more, linked arms with her, and started to skip. Sure he had no clue where he was going but he was sure Alice would direct him if he started to go the wrong way.
Silence started to grow once again and the Mad Hatter's eye twitched once. How he hated silence sometimes...it was just so eerie and silent. "So Alice! Tell me about yourself! When is your birthday? How old are you? Why do you hate the Queen? Why do you fight? Why are you with Cheshire? What do you like to eat? Do you like Tea? I love tea! Tea is the best thing in the world and I don't think I could live without it! When we get home I'll make you my special tea, you'll love it! I know you will! Everyone loves my special tea! Oh! And look!" Reaching up Mad Hatter grabbed at the card attached to his hat, the diamond card, "I added this on the other day! I thought it would make a more homey feel with being with you. Boy was the Queen mad when she saw this card but after all this is a means for peace, yes? And thusly we should try our hardest to be peaceful and like family, yes?!" He beamed brightly as his speech took a quick pace and he rambled about this, that, and anything to break the deafening silence.

“I give myself ( such ) very good advice....”
✖•••✖•••✖•••✖•••✖

For the first time since she had begun her planning for this important day, Alice doubted that her intricate plan would work. Not because she had any particular doubt in herself and not because she doubted the Cheshire Cat's ability to cut down the Queen of Hearts... but because she was nowhere near sure she could deal with this Mad Hatter fellow. She was used to silence brought on by plotting or simmering resentment; such stark cheerfulness was almost offensive to her brain. She didn't do cheerful anymore; no one in her camp of revolutionaries was much for giggles. A grim, silent, stoic bunch they were... 'wonderful and full of joy'?! What had Alice been thinking, inviting so much cheerfulness into her serious camp?!
“I assure you that I never pay any sort of attention to rumors spread by anyone, but I sincerely doubt that your particular take on them would be taken seriously.” the blonde said dryly as she walked. “Besides; they're probably right. If I were you I would be more careful with my words. We haven't begun our peace talks yet after all, Mr. Hatter.”
The fact that rumors and this cheerful man referred to her as a ghoul almost made her smile. It was all just so ridiculous; despite the intricacies and importance of her mission she couldn't help throwing in some small warning. She had read such ominous things about this Mad Hatter, and yet in person he seemed so... innocent, or naive, or some other word that shouldn't be applied to one so closely aligned to the hated Queen of Hearts. The fact that he linked arms with her and dragged her along only served to emphasize these thoughts; Alice was infinity glad that she had sent her minions hiding in the trees ahead. She sincerely doubted they would have been able to stay silent seeing their leader manhandled in such a way. As it was the girl blustered at the lighthearted frivolity for several minutes before it had to be stopped. Planting her heels she pulled him to a stop, an irritated expression on her face.
“You ask entirely too many questions.” she said a bit stiffly, looking up at him with a stern expression in her eyes. “I will answer one of them on the condition that you stop that skipping. I do not skip.”
Alice Diamond considered making his not touching her under any circumstances to the clause, but decided against it on the single fact that she had no idea what he was really capable of and it might be smart to keep a hand on him when leading him into the camp. Of course she would hate for it to be like this, but beggars couldn't be choosers.
Of course, it was an unnecessary condition seeing as the pair didn't have much farther to walk. Trees slowly gave way to gigantic, oddly colored mushrooms that gave the area an ethereal appeal. There was a fog that had no apparent source directly under the growths, and as Alice led him through them she spoke simply to keep the man from starting a conversation of his own accord.
“A diamond in your hat...” she glanced at the emblem he gestured to and almost smiled; the Mad Hatter looked so proud of himself. Combine that with the fact that something diamond related had caused the Queen irritation and Alice was as close to happy as she had been able to manage all day. “It's... very nice. I'm sure it will be... very appreciated in the camp. My associates usually burn anything with the heart symbol on it, so keeping any such thing away from your head would be to your benefit. As for being like family... though the sentiments would be appreciated I wouldn't hold my breath for that, Mr. Hatter. If any of my associates had family still among the living I assure you they would be with them and not in my little camp. Family moods and feelings are... not common.”
The mushrooms behind them, there was only one more line of trees before them to hide the camp. As she led him the talking flowers whispered to one another, making it sound like a second breeze was troubling the trees. Alice ignored them and the urge to step on them as best as she could as she stepped over the threshold. In the clearing before them was a virtual caravan of canvas tent, most adorned with sloppy diamond, spade, or club decorations. Revolutionaries were automatically visible, but they were not milling about doing aimless chores. These men and women were cold, completely at ease, and, as usual, in attack mode. There was no alarm about them as they took in their leader and the Mad Hatter close to her side; the spies from the meeting had beaten them back, after all. The camp was completely silent, the inhabitants moving aside like ghosts as Alice walked him towards the center of the camp.
“If you are going to stay among us, there is someone you must meet.” Alice said, already feeling better amidst the atmosphere. She gestured towards a large green velvet tent in the exact center of the camp, slipping her hand to grab his wrist firmly as she slid inside. It was a signal to her troops; they dissolved away to take their places around camp, still on high alert.
The inside of the tent was smokey and smelled of tasty herbs and spices; everything was clean and ornate and completely unlike the rest of the rough-and-tumble group that had assembled. As soon as the cloth door fell closed behind them an old woman rose from a chair, moving towards them with arm extended as if for a hug.
"Alice, my dear; you have returned... and you have brought me a guest." the old woman said, her throat raspy with age but as soothing as the herbs in the air.
“Yes. This is Mad Hatter, the representative of the Heart kingdom.” Alice replied in her clipped military tone, one so different from her relative's soothing one. “Mr. Hatter, may I introduce the Duchess. Aside from myself she is the only surviving member of the Diamond clan, and one of your hostesses during your stay here.”
"Oh Alice, don't be so stiff." the old woman said as she paused before them, extending her hand towards him boldly with a smile on her thin lips. "A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Hatter. Perhaps I can interest you in a biscuit? They're freshly baked..."
Alice sighed softly, fighting back the urge to make a disrespectful face. Why had she been worried about this particular part of her plan? The Duchess was nothing if not a hostess; Alice doubted the old woman even acknowledged the danger this particular young man could put her in at any minute. Sure, there were guards everywhere should such an event occur... but that did nothing to combat the headache all of this realizing was bringing to her head. Alice lifted a hand to rub her temples.
It was going to be a lengthy scrimmage indeed.
