I'm from Belgium, my native language is Dutch
I do find many familiar sounds in Finnish
the tricky part is the double vowels and long consonants, those don't exist in Dutch ;D

Any tips for a non-Finnish speaker, to learn said language?

Assuming you will be learning by yourself, there are only two tips I can provide:

1) expand your vocabulary
2) use it

Since grammar is a pain to try and learn without any guidance, you need not worry about that for a while and instead try and get some vocabulary on you. Also, as I listed, you must use the language you're trying to learn even if it sounds awkward to you. That's the only way you can get direct feedback (but when talking to Finns, you must ask for it first, since they will not correct you unless you ask them to).

Also I accepted your guild request. It's currently still under construction, at least for my part, due to the hefty amount of university entrance exams, so there might not be anything useful yet in the learning Finnish section, but if something troubles you, say, grammarwise, I will answer all questions asked there as soon as possible.

Haha, no reason to feel awkward. We have English posts quite often actually. lol

Taxet basically told all about the best way to get forward with it.
I have myself noticed that studying a language at school alone is quite useless if you don't dare and write/speak it with those who have it as their mother tongue. What I'm trying to say that active learning by yourself might be even more fruitful.:3

You should for example talk with us in Finnish as much as you can, fill up gaps in English if needed and then we can teach you words as you need them etc. ^__^
Listen to Finnish music, read or at least roll through Finnish newspapers in the net etc. Get exposed to the language! ^^

Jep. Sinänsä aika hauskaa miten se erottuu noista muista "juuri ja juuri läpi" -arvosanoista kuin musta mies 50-luvun suomessa, mutta ehkä se myös vahvistaa sen mitä muut on jo aina tiennyt: kielet (etenkin englanti) yksinkertaisesti on se mun vahva puoli. Hieman harmittaa kun matikasta tuli vain A, mutta toisaalta emmä siihen kyllä juuri harjotellu, enkä edes tienny mitä on logaritmit, vaikka tein yhden sellaisen tehtävän, joten ehkä se on parempi kuin olis voinu odottaa. sweatdrop

Pitää varmaankin tilata se matikan kokeen kopio itselleni jotta voin käydä sitä vähän läpi faijan kans. surprised
