Nottinghamissa oli tarkoituskin käydä sillä suurin osa kavereista asustelee juuri siellä :> Itteä ei pääkaupungit hirveästi kiinnosta koska ne on aina täynnä turisteja :<

Niinhän ne on, harmi vaan kun Lontoossakin on kaikkea jännää, mut turistiryhmät on tiellä : / Ja silloin myös mainostetaan enemmän niitä suosittuja kohteita. Sivukujilta vois löytää vaikka mitä aarteita.

Jep! Itekkin vähän ajattelin et otan mieluummin kaverin sit mukaan joka osaa näyttää niitä aarteita eikä perus telkkariturismirafloja sun muita. Ja haluan myös tutustua kulttuuriin, en turisteihin 3nodding
Ääh Lontoo, kauheasti tekisi mieli käydä siellä just nyt. Siskokin menossa. Mutta minä en!

Noh, keräilen kaikessa rauhassa rahaa ja lomapäiviä. :3

Ja tekisi kauheasti mieli vaihtaa nicki, mutta en tiedä mihin. surprised

Ah, don't worry about it. Most of us speak english relatively good, especially in Helsinki so I'm sure you'll be fine. smile Also, what is a better way to learn a language than to jump in the bunch! Oh and welcome to our country! Have you ever been to Finland before or will this be your first time here?

@Other general discussion:
Phew, meiksikin taas eksyy tänne. smile Vappu tulossa kohta. Onko ihmisillä kovasti jo vapun viettoa tiedossa? Itse taidan viettää sen kotona, sillä ei innosta lähteä remuamaan mihinkään ihmeemmin.

If there are any specific phrases or such you want to learn before your trip, feel free to ask us to teach you. n__n

What Lilygwen said is true, most of us Finns speak English well. But it never hurts to to show you have given a shot for Finnish, because it makes people feel more relaxed with using English themself.
I bet there's a psychological explanation too, I've just seen it happen many times. ^^

What I've seen is that people are so concerned that if they don't speak english just spot on perfect, they are bit timid to try. So I suppose if they see some one at least attempting to speak our not so easy language, it encourages them to try to speak english as well.

well, i have looked into it, but i should spend some time seriously studying it
finnish being such a drastically different language than my native language (dutch), makes it quiet hard to memorize words or see grammatical similarities

my name is egon / olen egon
if that's correct, then i don't see a grammatical connection

if you compare dutch with english and swedish, the relation between the languages is evident
mijn naam is egon / my name is egon / mitt namn är egon

Well, olen Egon would actually translate to I am Egon. A literal translation of My name is Egon would be minun nimeni on Egon. That way the connection is much clearer. User Image

Sorry. Done intruding the conversation. I'll be back to lurking. :3

The best way to learn any language is always to just go for it.
I've met many foreigners who have lived in Finland like 3 years and they still prefer to go with English, though. Asked about it and got told it's understood by so many that it's not usually a problem.

Then, once we had an Italian exchange student who spoke and understood Finnish alright just after a year in here without previous experience. She just kept talking with people and asking for words when ever she didn't know some. ^^
