This is flawed logic because the argument doesn't take into account the fact that Gaia needs cash revenue to continue to exist. People "forced" to buy Gcash is a "bad thing?" I don't think so. A lot of people will refuse to support the site financially if they can have all the "stuff" without contributing. So, Gaia offers incentives to cash supporters...
It really doesn't work like a real world economy at all, so you can't compare it to one. All this thread does is reinforce flawed beliefs. If everyone who is able to contribute would do so without these incentives, that would be a game changer, but I can't see that ever happening.
Gaia do need
Gaia Cash. I've never considered Gaia Cash a bad thing, I use it myself and I'm happy to support the site that way.

However, what I'm trying to say with this comic is that when gold is worth less, the only currency that is gonna be worth anything is Gaia Cash. It isn't nearly as inflated as the Gold has become. If you want the latest Chance Item, you may have to buy it with cash directly from La Victoire instead of the Market Place, because it's basically impossible for a regular user to get enough gold for it... A lot of kids around here might have a hard time convincing their parents to buy virtual items for real money.

I did check the site's history back in the day when I drew that comic, and the main reason to the hyperinflation seemed to come from Flynn's booty. Which paid out ridiculus amounts of gold to a lot of users. And then came the gold generators, items that literally paid you gold if your bought them for Gaia Cash. And
a lot of people got rich
really fast.
So Gaia Cash was not the culprit in the inflation. It did contribute, but not enough to be considered a problem. The Gold Generators was the real villain. Introduced by a new management of Gaia that was so obsessed with making profit that they didn't care to preserve the Gold currency for the users that were unable to buy Gaia Cash. Both the people responsible and the GGs are finally gone now. However, the whole site and the pay-out system has alredy adjusted to this kind of economy where 1 million Gold is considered pocket money.
eek
I know I sounded optimistic in the end of that comic, but now, I honestly don't see how we can ever go back to a more managable economy.
sweatdrop Lanzer suggested introducing a new currency, so we'll see how that will work out. It would be nice not having to count the digits five times to make sure you're not underprizing an item on the MP...
