Hello, everyone! It's that time of the year again—the time of year that is almost completely devoid of any real holiday cheer. Certainly the hot summer months sometimes leave something to be desired. But with such carefree days ahead we are free to make our own festivities! So let's borrow the winter season's spirit and embrace it against its will with a time honored tradition! Let's have a Secret Santa! I am hoping that this event will help foster some good will on Gaia, some new friendships, and maybe even some name drops in a few signatures. It's what makes the kids go crazy.

Update, Jun. 12: There have been many good questions asked, so I have expanded the FAQ. Please check it out!

Update, Jun. 19: The sign up period is at a close. I am preparing the Secret Santa list right now. If you are not on the participant list, you are not officially part of the event. If you believe you should have been on the participant list, please feel free to bring this to my attention. I may still be able to work something out.

11:05am EST: The Secret Santa list has been made! Everyone is paired up, and I'm going to start sending the PMs now! Be patient. This will take a while.

1:23pm EST: The last PM has been sent! Everyone should have their Secret Santa names. If you did not receive a PM, or if you accidentally deleted it, tell me and I'll send you your name again.

Update, Jun. 20: Today the event officially starts! All first gifts should be sent today! Don't forget!

Note: If you do not receive your first gift from your Secret Santa by Sunday, tell me and I will get to the bottom of the situation.

Also, soon we will be implementing a free Random Raffle! You will be asked simply to randomly generate a number. If you get a winning number, you will receive a prize! Be warned, though: Some of the prizes are flops! But some of those prizes are totally awesome! You'll just have to play to find out!

Update, Jun. 21: We have a new affiliate! Are you enjoying giving and receiving gifts but not enjoying the long week wait between Friday's? Then check this event out! The TGGoA Guild is hosting their 5th amazing Anonymous Gifting Event! Starting June 23 the event will have contests, games, gifts and fun fun FUN!

Update, Jun. 23: It has come to my attention that some of the comments being made in the thread are crossing the line. I feel it is my duty as thread creator to say something against this. Though I am sure you are only joking when you say these things, I'd greatly appreciate if you didn't joke about violence and death in the thread. The Secret Santa event is one of joy and charity, and I feel as though those themes contradict the spirit I'm trying to share with everyone. It would be a great favor and service to me if you would refrain from using such words or comments toward the other participants. Thank you.

Update, Jun. 28: Yesterday was our second official gifting day, which means everyone should have received a gift from their Secret Santa! If you did not receive your Secret Santa gift and continue to be giftless by the end of Sunday, please notify me immediately.

Update, Jul. 9: Tomorrow, July 10th, Blind and I will be away for most of the day, so we will not be online. Please feel free to still PM either one of us with issues or questions regarding the SS. When we eventually get online, we'll take care of them.

Update, Jul. 11: Because gifting has been disabled due to the updates to the site, please trade your SS gifts through an alt. Be sure to label your trades "Secret Santa" so your recipient knows it's from you and not a complete stranger. Also, send your clues through PM from the same alt.

If you do not have an alt to use, and do not want to make one for the event, please send your gifts to either Blind or myself through trade and we will trade them to your recipient for you. If you choose this option, please fill out the following form:

Each time you post may be a chance to win fabulous prizes! Here's how it will work: Below is a list of things you can win--if you post in the right spot. The catch? You will not know where exactly the prizes lurk! What does that mean, you ask? Basically, there is a list of pages that have prizes on them, and if you post in the right spot on that page, you will win a prize. The catch is that it's a mystery. You will not know which post will win. All you will know is that, for example, posting on page 430 is a chance to win.

Rules & Guidelines

1. Anonymous gifts and PMs must be turned on. This is an event based entirely around these systems. They are vital to the Pollyanna's success.

2. Have a readily visible wishlist somewhere. It can be on your profile, in your journal, or in this thread, but make sure it is somewhere and that you clearly express what it is you want. If you don't want anything in particular, please still pick out items for your wishlist. Those without a wishlist will not be added to the participant list.

3. Items on your wishlist need to vary in expense. Pick out some items that are reasonably cheap, moderately expensive, and obscenely costly. That way, no matter what your Secret Santa's budget, they can afford something that you'd like.

4. Send one gift every week. What you gift is ultimately up to you: have fun with it. Remember, though, whatever you do, do it anonymously!

a. Adhere to the gifting schedule. We will be sending gifts every Friday. This way you and your Secret Santa recipient will both know when to expect your next present, and this will help to build anticipation, which will add to the fun. Also, this guideline will make it easier to tell who might be a bum Santa.

Note: If you fail to send a gift in the first or following weeks, you will be removed from the event.

b. If you know you will be away, tell us. We understand that many of you will go on vacations during this season. Just let us know. This will help avoid a lot of anxiety for everyone involved.

Note: Should you be absent, and should you have your gift and clue ready, you can have either Blind the Thief or myself send it for you on the appropriate Friday. This of course only applies if you feel comfortable with us handling these matters. This is in no way a requirement. It is only a suggestion.

c. Feel free to gift art, but make it thoughtful. Although art has no official in-game value, if the artist takes the time and effort, it can be treasured above anything else.

d. Gifts have a minimum expense of 1,000 gold. This rule excludes cheaper items that have been specifically asked for on the recipient's wishlist.

5. With each gift you must provide a clue hinting to your identity. However, please don't make your hints overly obvious. Here are some examples of good clues:

"I have a picture of myself in my signature."
"There are three i's in my name."
"I am an active member of the E-Vents Guild."
"My avatar is wearing a starter item."
"The second word in my name is derived from a Greek myth."

a. Make sure your Secret Santa recipient knows your gifts are from you, his or her Secret Santa. Prefacing a gift message like, "This is your Secret Santa speaking. I am a girl," is encouraged.

b. If you are random gifting, do not imitate or pretend to be that person's Secret Santa.

c. Clues can be sent whether or not they are actually attached to a gift.

d. If for any reason you are unable to complete your responsibilities as a Secret Santa, notify me immediately.

6. Do not reveal your identity to anyone. Guessing and speculation are part of the fun, though. Please do this in this official Pollyanna thread.

7. Be sure you are able to participate financially. There is a minimum of five (5) gifts, so you must be able to spend at least 5,000 gold in total. Do not sign up if you cannot afford to send gifts every week.

Note: Unless specifically asked for by the recipient, trash or items of little value do not count as gifts.

8. Do not spend more than you are willing to. Other than the 1,000 gold price minimum, there are no gift restrictions. If you are not comfortable with spending all of your gold, then don't. You don't have to buy Monthly Collectibles for every gift. Spend what you'd be comfortable to part with, no matter what you might receive from your Secret Santa.

9. If you change your name, tell me. How else is your SS going to know to whom to send his or her gift?

10. Be gracious and grateful. Be appreciative of each other. Remember the (borrowed) spirit of this season and this event.

11. Ask questions! General issues should be addressed publicly in the thread. Questions about the guidelines and rules would fall into this category. Private concerns (especially those regarding your Secret Santa or gifting) should be addressed to me, the narcissistic e-trend, or Blind the Thief in a PM.

I am committed to making this a success; feel free to address me with any of your concerns or questions. Please tell me if you're not receiving gifts: I will do my best to fix the problem.

The big Pollyanna reveal date is set for July 18th.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have you done this before?
I have, actually. Last Christmas I hosted a Pollyanna for the GD. There were over 200 participants, and it had over 7,000 posts. It was a big success, if I do say so myself.

What's a "Pollyanna"? I thought this was a Secret Santa.
Well, Pollyanna simply means Secret Santa. I'm not sure how the word "Pollyanna" became synonymous with "Secret Santa," but somehow it did. It's one of those mysteries for the ages.

How do I know this isn't a scam?
Well, sadly, you do not. I mean, if you suspect that this is a scam, and an elaborate one at that, then there isn't very much I can say to convince you otherwise. However, I will say for the record that this is not a scam. This thread has been made solely for the joy of giving and receiving gifts. Should you feel this is indeed a scam, by all means report it to the mods. That is your Gaian civic duty, after all.

How do I sign up?
You simply say that you would like to join by posting in this thread! No secret word, no complicated handshake. Just let us know!

When does the sign up period end?
It ends Wednesday, June 18th.

When does the event start?
It starts Friday, June 20th. The first gift should be sent this day, and all subsequent gifts will be sent every following Friday for five weeks, ending on Friday, July 18th.

Do I get to pick my Secret Santa?
No, you will be assigned a name on Thursday, June 19th, by myself or Blind the Thief. Not only will this ensure everyone has a Secret Santa, but it will also make keeping track of the event easier. Please make sure to send all your gifts to the name we assign you.

Can I still send gifts to other people though?
Sure! Just make sure you remember your SS recipient! Also, don't pretend to be someone else's Secret Santa. We need to know who is actually receiving things from their real SS to ensure the event is fair. Like, if you send a gift to your friend and pose as his or her SS, but he or she doesn't receive a gift from his or her real SS, then how are we supposed to know that? Your friend might not report it, and that isn't fair to anyone.

How do I gift anonymously?
First, buy the item you want to gift. Now, go to your inventory and click on its icon. There will be a number of options available to you now; click the purple one that says "GIVE AS GIFT." This will bring you to the gift wrapping page. Choose the color you want your gift to be, type in your SS recipient's name, write your clue, check the "Give this gift anonymously?" button, enter your password, confirm, and presto! All done.

I forgot to check anonymous! Now my recipient knows who I am. Do I still have to send him or her gifts?
These things happen; mistakes occur. Don't worry about it. But do continue to send gifts! Don't let a small setback like this spoil the fun for either of you!

For whatever reason I cannot use the gifting option. Can I use the trade feature to send my gifts?
In the event that the gift option does not work for you, you may certainly use the trade feature. However, if this is truly the only gifting avenue available to you, I urge you to use an alternate account. Part of the fun is the secrecy surrounding the event, and trading items doesn't allow for much guess work.

If you do not have or do not want to make an alt, you can always have Blind the Thief or myself send the gifts for you. If this option is unsatisfactory, which I wholeheartedly understand, then I am at a loss. Hopefully, one of the above methods sounds suitable to you though.

Can I send one big gift?
No, sadly you cannot. This isn't to say you cannot send big gifts. However, this is to say that you must send at least five gifts (worth at least 1,000 gold) over the course of this event.

I have some items on my wishlist already. Do I have to add more?
If all of those items are Monthly Collectibles or Evolving Items, then you must add more items to your wishlist. MCs and EIs are expensive items, and it is unreasonable to ask your Secret Santa to buy you five of them during the course of the event. Is this to say you can't have MCs and EIs on your wishlist? No. However, it is a good rule of thumb to have at least five items worth 1,000 gold sprinkled throughout your wishlist. That way, no matter what his or her budget is, your Secret Santa can afford something you'd like.

I can't afford 1,000 gold a week. What should I do?
You shouldn't sign up then.

I can afford the 1,000 gold a week, but I can't afford anything on my recipient's wishlist. What should I do?
If you cannot afford anything on their wishlist, try getting things that you can afford (obviously) and that you think will compliment their avatar. Perhaps they have a certain theme: get them something from that theme. Do they like a particular color? Get them items of that color. Do they wear a lot of jewelry? Get them some special pieces. Then after you have purchased this item, attach a note asking for cheaper items to be added to their wishlist.

Can I send three items amounting to 1,000 gold at the same time?
Well, it really depends on what you mean by that. I say this because you should be getting things off of your recipient's wishlist. If there are a number of items that are really cheap, then go ahead and gift a bunch of them at a time. I'm sure your recipient would really like signing on, only to find an inventory full of gifts. However, if you are sending really cheap random gifts, then you may not do that. This is an event for thoughtful giving.

If I send three items at once, does that mean I only have to send two more?
No, that is not what it means. Simply sending three gifts does not mean you are three gifts down. You still have to send a gift each following week.

I want to send art. How do I do that?
There have been many suggestions as to how one should go about this. The two best ideas regarding art are

1. Use a mule and simply PM the picture to your recipient.
2. Send the url in a note attached to a small item.

If either of those fails, send the art to me, and I will deliver it for you.

I am stuck. I don't know what to write for my clues. What should I do?
First, what have you told them already, if anything? What would you like to tell them? Do you have a specific theme in mind or a style of writing for the clues? You could reveal in a clue something your avatar is wearing. You could use the etymology or the meaning of any of the words in your username. If you need more help, feel free to PM Blind the Thief or myself.

I haven't received a gift. What's going on?
This can happen for a number of reasons. Some of them are more innocent than others. However, if you haven't received a gift from your Secret Santa, report this fact to Blind the Thief or myself no matter what those reasons are! We will get on the case immediately, and we will get to the bottom of the situation!

I have received only Daily Chance items or trash, and I have been giving my recipient things off his or her wishlist. This isn't fair.
If you have only received junk items, PM Blind the Thief or me immediately. The whole idea behind this event is thoughtful giving. Thoughtful gifts are not starter items. To do such a thing is dishonest and unfair. We will find out what's going on, and we will fix it.

I know I will be away on Friday. Can I send my gift on Thursday or Saturday?
Being that it is summer and there are things to life besides Gaia, I fully expect some of us will not be online on one or two Friday's. If you know you won't be able to gift on a scheduled Friday, please by all means send your gift on Thursday, and please tell Blind or myself that you have done so. If Saturday is better for you, that's fine too. Again, just please let Blind or me know because we need to keep track of who is and who isn't sending gifts, and I would hate for someone to be accused of being a bum Santa when they are truly just a bit busy.

Also, I cannot stress this enough--especially in these instances--please make sure you include clues with your gifts. You want to make sure your recipient knows your presents are from you.

What happens when a name is removed?
When someone is removed from the list of participants, they are removed from the event. Period. All name removals are final.

Will we get new Secret Santas when a name is removed?
Should someone be removed, which I really hope no one will have to be, someone will inherit a new recipient. Let's say you have been gifting someone. Unfortunately, for some reason, that person has to be removed from the event. This situation would normally leave two people at a loss. One would be you, having no one to gift, and the other would be the recipient of the removed. However, to remedy this, you would inherit the removed's recipient, and the void would be filled, and order would be restored.

I have a question that hasn't been covered by this FAQ. Where should I ask it?
General issues should be addressed publicly in the thread. Questions about the guidelines and rules would fall into this category. Private concerns (especially those regarding your Secret Santa or gifting) should be addressed to me, the narcissistic e-trend, or Blind the Thief in a PM.

E-Vents Guild

This guild is dedicated to the principles of community, and it is about bringing that community closer in a fun and friendly atmosphere for all ages. It's about getting to know your fellow Gaian, as well as having a good time. It's a place to compete, play, chat, and take part in some wicked cool online events. It's about fostering friendships and realizing the true potential of an online community such as Gaia. It's about you enjoying yourself and hopefully finding an e-home away from home.

We have lots of exciting and entertaining events planned. We have

1. Secret Santas, one in December and one in June
2. Treasure Hunts spanning all of Gaia
3. Book Clubs in which we discuss popular and totally sweet literature
4. Movie Clubs in which we watch various movies and talk about them
5. Contests, including competitions for avatars, art, essays, and more!
6. Lotteries for phat lewtz
7. Tournaments, inspired by--but not limited to--using your DS to battle Pokemanz
8. Birthday Parties

In fact, there are a number of events running right now!

• Rags and Riches: A TekTek Contest, 1st prize: 15,000 gold and a YARLY! Hat
  
• The Guild Lottery, Current Jackpot: 45,000 gold
  
• The Guild Raffle, in which a 1st gen. Fausto's Bottle and gold prizes will be given away
  

And those are just the beginning! If you are interested in becoming a part of the guild, here are the requirements we ask of you.

¤ First and foremost you must follow Gaia's Terms of Service, as well as the guild policies.
¤ Be genuinely interested in becoming a part of our online events and our community.
¤ Being intelligible and literate is appreciated. This way everyone can understand you.
¤ Bring a respectful and considerate attitude!
