For those who don't know "ita" is basically really bad lolita that's painful to look at. Usually very awkwardly cut, bulky, and has a lot of lace all over the place.
And a lot of gaia's lolita items are really lacy and huge.
Like, I could suffocate a gaia baby with it.
Is it because maybe the artists are more familiar with "anime lolita" and thinks that's what it looks like? Or do they just kind of go with what they think they know?
Granted, I don't think myself as a "lolita" expert. Mooostly because I can't afford to dress it IRL at the minute. (Saving up for my first coord, though) But I do know some basic faux-pas of the style.

Although some of the lolita items look overdone, if used correctly you could make awesome styles. I can agree that there is a bit too much lace at times, and that there is some awkwardness in the cut. To be honest, the only obstacle is one's imagination when it comes to making avatars have the lolita look. Gaia's concept can be a bit iffy at times, but meh.

A side note: Gaia has always gone towards anime style since the days that it was a turnpike for such sites. That's mainly what they go by, and seeing the more realistic styles over the years worries me a little. They almost look like crappy caricatures when given further examination

As a definite notice in change of styles for Gaia: I think they're moreso gearing towards K-pop and Korean fashions with their cute styles now. They keep the anime vibe with parody items and the like, but yes. I notice the exaggeration in some fashion.

Rare

probably because, like with most things on Gaia, contemporary fashion fads get exaggerated and beaten to death in the form of items

hell we're still getting pastel goth/soft grunge fashions-- s**t that everyone stopped making fun of in 2012. it's no wonder Gaia would misunderstand lolita fashion as well and make it look torrid

Slumbering Tengu

Probably for the same reason that many of Gaia's steampunk is brown

I will agree with the previous poster about Gaia love of exaggerating things
as I think back even just to massive hair and incredibly eye-searing colors

I've noticed that, too. But there have been some newer lolita items that are more simple and realistic (Diamonds and Ice, for example). They still have the bulky lace monsters at times.
Also, I wish they would stop beating the lolita maid to death. Please. It's such a bad and over done trope.
Also. Gaia. Lingere is not lolita, either.

I'll admit I'm not familiar with steampunk at all to know anything BUT brown. All I see are the con steam punks, which I am mostly aware are more or less the new people at it??

Also eye searing colors... I'm sorry about the new femm majokos. emo

Because we are tiny chibi people and items are mostly big exaggerated versions of the style they're trying to mimic.

If you make things smaller, you'd lose a lot of detail and it'll be just a bunch of tiny dots.
Lolita's a pretty intricate style, why don't you try pixeling lace for the bases without making it extra puffy or gaudy. Plus Lolita's more about coordinating and building the outfit itself. You make "bad" items look good by pairing it with the right stuff.

Demonic Lover

I don't know, I blame the artist and not "Gaia" as if it were a place individuals connect their minds and become one. We have great artists who make great items and we have shitty ones that make things too big or too small, stuff that doesn't work on dark bases, arms that are too long or too short... etc.

I'm not one for lolita so I don't pay much attention but if it looks like the stuff from anime it's alright, most of the members would want to emulate that, not try to go with what some people consider "superior" in terms of clothing meant to emulate child styles of another era.

Pretty much this. You can make almost any item on this site look good with a little elbow grease. wink

To be honest, I've never really liked "lolita" as a style or a culture too much. I like cute stuff a lot, but most lolita is just a bit too much to me to begin with-- so I never really thought about whether the artists were exaggerating it or not. But there's still quite a lot to work with if you try!

I like the overdone-ness, actually. What translates to a good style online doesn't necessarily equal a good style irl

Rainbow Succubus

Because that's what sells?

I dunno, I dislike the style myself. But I'll refrain from that cynicism for now and suggest that I've seen some very slick styles irl that would translate well for gaia, in colours that aren't only pastel and not always too floofed.

To each is their own... some may prefer an abundance of lacy layers.
Style tends to be fluid, it looses the attraction when you apply strict rules to adhere to.
Just follow what appeals to your sense of aesthetics.

Steampunk is characterized as a combination of Sci-fi tech with a Victorian Vintage twist. Named after the appeal of the steam engine. It can be easier to get that old aesthetic by using neutral colors.
Lolita is a combination of womanly and child like fashion to create a very feminine look. Frilly girls dresses and makeup.

Why not combine the two?

ita in the term for lolita comes from "itai" which means "ouch". Referring to people whose styles are painful to look at. Its not something i made up on the spot. Its a term that is used within the lolita culture.

The main complaint I have with it? (besides the spamming us with so much of it?)
