Welcome to Gaia! ::

Unstoppable Disaster

How long does it take...

I can't surf Gaia without the big red bar appearing on the top of the page. I looked at the comments people are typing to McAfee about Gaia, and seriously Gaia needs to do something to improve the security/quality of the site.

Short topic is short, so I'll give 2 spoons:
Why is Gaia consider a risky website now?
Which features of Gaia landed it into risky category?

Before tears become strength?

Most likely some 3rd party content. I have images and signatures disabled and I have no problems browsing Gaia.

It may be ads triggering McAfee. Sometimes they're not as safe as you'd think. If you can still see the ads, or get your McAfee to tell you what it is that's so hazardous, I'm pretty sure you can report the dangerous content and they'll review it/remove it.

It may also be tinyurls in peoples' signatures. I've heard those can make virus protection freak the heck out sometimes.

I hate McAfee. I threw it away from my pc and got some proper free anti-virus anti-malware firewall etc. programs from the internet and I have never regretted it. McAfee bullshits around too much. If you'd like, I can PM you some links.

McAfee is the s**t, as in it's s**t.

I hate their pop ups and stupid ads.

Gaia is considered a risky website because using Gaia is the s**t, as in it's THE s**t. cool Too cool for school. TOO hot to not use it. It's got danger written all over it wahmbulance

I bet it was GD that did it though (j/k). Porn! Porn everywhere though! I reported some yesterday.

Side note: thank you for making the effort of turning this into a discussion topic and not some Q&A thread.

McAfee wants to download on my computer, but I'm not going to let it. I have two anti-virus; and mine aren't going off. In fact, I don't think I've ever had them go off on Gaia.

I'd try another anti-whatever you're using.

Norton is the herpes of Anti-virus software and McAfee gives far too many false reports.
I've got Avast for scans with added protection from 3rd party cookies thanks to the Firefox add ons Ghostery, Noscript, and Adblock.

That's what I hated about Mcafee.

Especially when my grandpa thought that a malware ad was actually an ad for Mcafee, and went to 'install the update'.

Ugh.

Avast is not some kind of anti-virus god program. While it offers some functionality that other anti-virus software doesn't it is by no means the best anti-virus application out there. I played a game once where it was flagging certain game files as false positives while Norton and McAfee didn't.

Most likely, there is some reason or other malware out there that Gaia's main page is similar too, and being flagged as a problem. Could be a cookie associated with the site somewhere but who knows.

If anyone has information on any detailed reason why the site is being flagged please feel free to let me know, it's probably something that site administration would like to know about if they don't already.

edit: it's also really strange it is flagging it. The site advisor website says gaia online is fine:

I had to delete McAfee from my computer long ago

You're actually not suppose to have two anti-viruses running at the same time on a single computer or else it will limit the performance of both (or even worse, cause one or both of them to not work).

Anyways, I had McAfee a couple of times before in the past. I wasn't impressed by it. As far as it triggering on Gaia, it most likely has to do with the third party ads. If you use Firefox then I suggest getting the No-Script and/or Adblock add-ons.

I hate to break it to you: But McAffee is an appauling virus protection. It said every site I went on was dangerous and managed to slip by four viruses without doing anything about them. I'm glad I switched. Its not Gaia which is the problem, its your anti-virus.

McAfee is crap (Better than Norton, though.), but the SiteAdvisor usually does come in handy. -never bothered uninstalling it from the browser-

As for good antiviruses, while Avast is a nice free one, if you have the money, Vipre is awesome.
Thank you for posting this thread!
I was actually wondering the same thing because my McAfee is advising against Gaia as well.

My subscription is about to end anyways.
Anyone know any really good free virus protection programs?
