Clearly it was mermaids, and we are closely related to mermaids. In fact, if a woman gives birth in the water there is no reason to ever take the baby out of the water because it already has water in its lungs and it will continue to grow and develop normally, just underwater. As a mermaid.

I was really really mad at animal planet for playing with my emotions the way they did. Making it all look so real, then putting a barely noticeable disclaimer saying "fake". D: The possibility of mermaids exists simply for the fact that we don't know that they don't, and theoretically they could have evolved given certain circumstances, like the ones the mockumentary described.
