Welcome to Gaia! ::

Clarinet does have a pretty high register, I guess. I'm not a clarinetist by any means, so I don't really know, but in the battle between clarinet and violin, violin definitely takes the cake (in the case of the higher end of that range)
*Trumpets, fanfare, confetti, and general rejoicing*

YAY! Somebody got it! The instruments are the violin, clarinet, and bassoon, in that order. The clarinet does indeed have a relatively high range, being a soprano instrument, but here it's playing in its lowest register. Also, as previously stated, the violin can go quite a bit higher.

So who gets to post the next question?
I think Septomor should because he got one of three instruments first, but I guess you can ask the next question just to avoid conflict... Or whoever posts first.
thanks Kunoichi.
Pretty tough question Amphion, I'll try one as well.

We can do two questions, here's the insanely hard question that unless you know the music you won't get it:

In the first measure of the theme in Mahler's 9th symphony, 4th mvnt., what is the chord that's played on beat 3?

But since that's really hard, I'll do a substitute,

What's the first instrument that really has a solo (main voice) in Mahler's 7th symphony? (yes first mvnt.)
twisted *evil laugh* Oh, but I like score dissection....
*groans* I hate those sort of questions...Especially when they're about a composer that I rarely listen to!

I will start by asking a question. The first person who answers it correctly will ask another question. The first person who answers that will post another question and so on.

Here's the first one:

Brahms and Rachmaninoff are only two of the composers that have written variations on which piece by Paganini?

His 24th Caprice!

*sighs* Did you even read what you quoted? It is correct though...

Amphion, I'm awful at questions about orchestration...Or about more modern composers. I'm going to have to sit this one out.

You don't have to make it seem so rude! Okay, here you go....

How many Symphonies did Haydn compose? (I know it's really easy, but I'm kind of new to music, so I only know a little!)
Septomor
thanks Kunoichi.

I'm not sure, but I think it's the double bass. Or is that the 5th one?! Isn't it the one that sounds like Frere Jaques?

Okay, In Beethoven's 3rd symphony, what key are the horns in?(No cheating!)
&
In Mozart's Requiem Mass, what 2 lines are both in Hostias and Domine Jesu?

Not to spoil your party, but I believe the symphony you were thinking of was the fifth symphony. Not just that, but the fifth opens up with a trumpet solo.
Oh and the answer to the Beethoven question was Eb.

And you still haven't bothered to read the rules! You can't just jump in and start posting questions. If I am being rude, it is justified by your more significant rudeness.

I'll explain this...

First you have to answer the question posted by the last person who answered a question correctly. If you get that right, you may then ask your own question.

Is it too much to ask for people to read the rules and play the game accordingly?
I'm sort of abandoning the one about Mahler 9; the theme seems to be intoned on soli strings; but I may be listening to the wrong part. As for Mahler 7, I believe the first movement opens with a solo from the tenor horn?
Sure enough.

Your turn. (As for the chord, it's A maj, kinda strange to appear in a Db maj theme isn't it?)
...waits for a new question smile ...

but to pass the time (even though this question is not part of the thread continuity)
Mr.monkey14

Both the Domine Jesu and Hostias movements contain the "Quam olim Abrahae promisisti, et semini ejus" section.

Now back to waiting smile

I was going to post something about Das Leid von der Erde, but the mention of the Requiem text changed my mind...

In Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, traditional Requiem texts are mixed with poems in English. Many of them are from which British poet?
