I question what is more "over-sensitive"--people being offended over a word that has been used in a derogatory fashion toward people with mental disabilities, or people being angry over what is and isn't the official name of a gray pony in a child's cartoon.

I think that, clearly, one issue has greater substance? I mean, if I'm the producer of a kid's show and I have to choose to alienate parents and kids whose sensitivity to the word "derpy" is ramped up due to personal experience with discrimination and bullying....or choose to alienate (usually) adult fans who are pissy about a character's name, then yeah, I'd probably choose to alienate the latter group as well.

But that's just me, I guess. I mean, if the official name on official merchandise is Ditzy Doo and fans still refer to her as Derpy Hooves...isn't that fine? It's not like it changes what you have to call her.

Ditzy Doo is a cute name imo sad its a minor change for a minor character and tbh i think people arent disagreeing about the name because of continuuity but rather because they dont want to acknowledge that the previous name uses an inapporpriate word

I used to use it as an avatar on another site where I had a reputation as the Village Retard and considering people said that avatar fits me, there's probably some merit to thinking "Derp" could be offensive.

Also South Park is a terrible example because they often do things that are outrageous, offensive, or outrageously offensive "for the lulz". You prolly would have been better off using the Rob Schneider parody bits because those aren't as blatantly offensive as someone deliberately acting like an idiot.

You say that the changing of it is ruining everyone else's fun, when that "everyone else" should have absolutely no influence on what is and is not inserted into a young child's cartoon. This is not Adventure Time where they have been catering to adults and teenagers from the get-go.

If people found it offensive, people found it offensive. Your created sub-culture around the cartoon should have absolutely no bearing on its existence, especially when its intended demographic is not you, but very young, impressionable children.

Do you honestly think they would understand the intricacies of what the word "Derp" is supposed to mean versus what they might interpret it as? And do you really believe that the majority of the parents who are allowing their children to watch this show know of, or understand the internet sub-culture that has formed behind it?

Honestly, at some point the adult made sub-culture needs to take a look at itself, step back and realize that it isn't their place to try and insert their influence into a child's program.
