How to Become Rich: In-depth View
Freebies: I'm talking about the daily chance and the quests available and things like that. Always collect the daily chance on each heading page (Home, My Gaia, World, Community, Market, Games, News & Events, and Gaia Store). The Daily Chance only gives out Commons (regular items) and gold but every little bit counts. Every time Gaia has a promotional item (like for a movie or whatever) do the quest, watch the trailer or whatever to earn the prize. Often you can do these quests multiple times. Do so. Whenever Gaia has an event, collect all the free items they're giving away. You never know, sometime in the future your free item may be worth thousands or millions of gold.
Fishing: Always fish with the free bait the daily chance gives out because fish are worth more than bait. Even if you only use the basic rod and fish at Bass'ken you can earn gold from your fish and chat to make friends. Another note about fishing, you can trade in your fish for fish-related equip-able items such as gills and helms. You can also sell your fish in the Market Place, sometimes for more than Logan will buy it for, you can also do so with the equip-able items as well as your trash.
Gambling: Yeah, you can gamble on Gaia. I reccomend you play Slots or Black Jack with the free tokens the Daily Chance gives out. I find Black Jack is more profitable ticket-wise but if you don't know how to play the game then Slots is just fine and sometimes you might get a huge reward for spinning. Tickets are worth more than tokens. You can sell tickets in the Market Place or use them to buy items from Prize & Joy and then sell the items on the Market Place for gold.
Games: Games are fun and give you gold for highscores (and low ones, too!). So if you're bored you can do Jigsaws, play Pinball (and earn items as well as gold), play Word Bump (and earn school credits as well as gold). I've already talked about the other games. Jigsaw will sometimes give out random items for completing puzzles as well as gold. Difficulty in puzzles counts toward how much gold you get so don't always go for easy puzzles. Pinball is fun and you can earn items as well as gold. Word Bump you can earn gold and school credits. School credits can be used to buy special items from Edmund at H & R Wesley. You can also sell the school credits or the items you buy after earning them. Of course, the amount of gold you get for playing games goes down the more times a day you play but it resets daily. And, as always, you can chat with other users while you play games.
Towns: Towns are a place to 'physically' congregate with your Gaian friends. Your avatar shows up and you can move it around as well as chat. You can also earn gold in towns. You can earn gold by shaking trees, rocks, and bushes. You can also catch bugs and pick up trash. You simply click on an item to collect it, but if you're too far away you might miss! Bugs and trash can both be traded in. Bugs can be exchanged to Moira at Durem Depot for inks. (Inks, in turn can be traded in for tattoos or to color boquettes.) It usually takes 50 bugs to make one ink but sometimes you get rare bugs that make an ink by themselves. Trash can be exchanged at the Gambino Hat Shop for equip-able items which you can use on your avatar or sell in the Market Place. Another thing you can do in towns is pick flowers. You can make pretty boquettes at the Flower Shoppe and equip them or sell them in the Market Place. You can also sell flowers.
Bumping: You can earn gold bonuses by chatting in the forums. You can also earn gold by not chatting in the forums, this is generally referred to as "bumping." The amount of gold per post goes down the more times you do it a day but it resets everyday.
Polls: While you're chatting in the forums pause to answer some polls and earn gold bonuses for doing so.
Voting: Go vote and comment in the Arena. You can earn gold bonuses for voting and commenting. The amount of gold per comment/vote goes down the more times you do it in a day but it resets daily.
Journaling: Go write in your journal. Your friends can see what's on your mind and- guess what- you earn gold for posting in your journal. The more times you post daily the less gold you get each time but, as with everything else, it resets daily.
Profiles: You can earn gold bonuses by commenting on people's profiles. However "drive-by" commenting will probably make people mad at you. Try to keep your comments meaningful and courteous.
Marketplace: I've talked about it a lot already but haven't even explained it. The Market Place is an E-bay -esque place to buy and sell items. You can sell your items here (all of them, unlike in the shops which don't buy non-shop or game items). You can also buy items. I suggest doing this because you can usually save money on the shop price.
Investing: Invest! Once you get a little gold on your account (unfortunately this is one of those 'you need money to make money' situations) you can buy MCs and Cash Shop or Evolving Items. The reason why MCs, Cash Shop Items, and Evolving Items are such a great investment is that they are sold for a limited time only. Which means there is a finite number of them. But there are more and more Gaians all the time. So those items are garunteed to go up in value over time (it wont be instant but it does work). As with all investments some items are better than others.
Vending: Another thing you can do (if you have way too much time on your hands) is Vend. Vending essentially consists of constantly refreshing the Market Place and looking for deals, buying the low priced items then selling them at their regular price. Example: If, say, you notice that someone has listed say (for the purpose of the example, no such item exists) french perfume for 10g and the average selling price is 500g you can buy that item and then sell it at a profit for 500g. Warning: This is a very long, tedious process that requires a lot of time. It is not for everyone.
Selling Services: If you have a talent (such as drawing) exploit it. You can open a shop in the Mini Shops section of the forum and sell drawings or banners or animations or whatever for gold or items. You can also become employed by a bumping agency. I've never bothered with this but I'm pretty sure it's something along the lines of, people pay the agency to bump and you get paid for bumping for the people that paid the agency. (If anyone has more information on this please PM me and I'll edit this section.)

An Even More Extensive Guide. (As though you really needed this.)
Freebies
The only real way to cash in on the freebies (other than to remember to get all of them everyday) is to have multiple accounts and funnel money to your main account. They call the ones you use just to make money Mule accounts and the ones that you work hard at making pretty Main accounts. You can have as many accounts as you have e-mail addresses. That is all.
Fishing
Alright, the first step of making money at fishing is filtering your casts. Sometimes you'll get a "bite " and you reel it in and it's trash. Which can be lame, in some people's opinion. So trash can be pretty easy to get rid of if you know what to look for. I know that trash does not fight very much at all and is easy to reel in. I have been told that it never pulls to the right but I'm not sure if I'm observant to do more than speculate on this. (If you have more information on the fighting habits of fish and/or trash I'd love to include it here. I'll give you credit for contributing, of course.) So, if you get a bite and you realize it's trash simply point your mouse way off to one side to deliberately loose whatever's caught on the line.
Another way to optimize fishing is to fish at "twilight" or "dawn" which happens pretty frequently on Gaia time, which runs twice as fast as normal time. You get better fish at these times of day, just like in real life.
Another thing to think about is switching lakes. Bass'ken lake has the easiest (and therefore cheapest fish) to catch. Port D'Gambino has sort of medium fish and Durem Recclaimation Facility has the hardest fish. If you want to fish anywhere other than Bass'ken you may want to invest in a better fishing rod. I suggest buying one from the Market Place. I say this only if you're good at or like fishing on Gaia. If you like fishing then it's a good investment. (I need more information on the fish that can be caught in the various lakes. If you know, please PM or post here so I can help others. I'll be sure to give you credit for the info.)
Different fishing rods are better for different reasons. Basic fishing rod is kind of flexible, casts okay, and has a reel in range that's straight and kind of narrow. Strength rod is not as flexible and doesn't cast as far but it's harder for the fish to pull away from and the reel in range kind of bells out at the bottom so it's harder to loose fish as you reel them in closer. Distance rod is very flexible and easier for the fish to get away from, it has a long cast distance which can get you better fish and the reel in range is funnel shaped but only gets as narrow as the basic rod range gets. The performance rod is kind of the best of both worlds, it's flexible but not too flexible, it casts fairly far and the reel in range bells out at the bottom and the top but not as much as the Strength or Distance rod respectively. Plus rods are even better. To get a plus rod you can trade in your current rod, plus far, far too much gold for a better rod. Or you can buy one in the Market Place or Exchange forum. I've never used a plus rod but from the description it sounds like they're like the other rods, only better. (Have more information about this? Post or PM me.)
I may as well talk about fishbait now. Grade F is the cheapest and worst. Grade D is second cheapest and a little better than Grade F. Grade A is the most expensive and best. But most expensive is not always the best financially. Better bait attracts better fish but wont help you much if you're a terrible fisher so I guess you have to go on a case-by-case basis. Try it once and if your haul is good enough to justify having bought it (the total amount you can sell the fish for is greater than you bought the bait for) then it's right for you. If not, stick with the free Grade F bait. When buying bait going to the Game Exchange or Market Place is not a bad idea.
When selling your fish and trash you may as well do it in the Market Place, you can get better prices there than you can in the store. Especially since some people go to crazy lengths to get 5000 cans for a tin hat.
The next thing to maximize profits is to consider Exchanging your fish. You can exchange them for other fish (not the best idea, believe me) or equipable items such as gills. These items may be worth a lot more than the fish you make them out of. You can also exchange the trash you collect from fishing. 5000 cans gets you a tin hat. 5000 boots gets you a giant boot you can wear on your head. 5000 tires gets you Big ol' Tire on my head. (I need more information on the items you can make from fish. If you have more information please PM or post here so I can help others. I'll be sure to give you credit. And maybe some gold, too.)
I am by no means an expect on all things Fishing. If you have any more information that may help the readers of this Guide I'll give you full credit for your information and some gold (more gold depending on the amount and quality of your information.)
Gambling
Gambling, there's not much more that I can tell you about gambling. Playing Black-Jack is more time consuming but a better pay-off as far as I'm concerned. Slots has a small chance for a large pay out but Black Jack has a good chance for many small pay-outs. The Black Jack game Gaia has is pretty well explained but there are some things I can tell you. For example, never hit on seventeen or above unless you think the computer has a better hand. If often don't hit on 16 or above when playing Jinx or Cardbot because I noticed I tend to bust more when playing against them. I also never, ever double-down. You're risking more because you double your bet and you only get to hit once that hand.
Cheating. The dealers cheat. Russel Ace has the cheat "Pocket Ace", but he's not very smart and I've noticed he wastes it on times when adding an ace wont let him beat you. Jinx has the cheat "Fresh Start" but sometimes this isn't very helpful. Cardbot can use both of these skills. Unlike when the dealers cheat you cannot affect your own hand. You can only affect the dealer's hand. I recommend saving your rage for when they have a ten or an ace showing. I always do the redraw option instead of peeking.
Beating the dealers is always cool. You get a bonus for beating each of them. Twenty-five tickets for Russel Ace, fifty tickets for Jinx and one-hundred tickets for Cardbot.
The computer never hits on seventeen or over so if you have a twenty and they have say, ten then they hit and get eighteen you win without them busting. The computer always hits under seventeen though, even if they've already beat your hand. They loose by busting a lot.
Games
I've pretty much said everything there is to say about games. I'll add some links to specific game-guides soon, though. If you have any information I didn't include in the previous post I'd like to hear it. PM or post here, please.
Towns
You can go and make gold by wandering around in towns. Shaking bushes, rocks, and trees can get you a few gold. You can also pick flowers, catch bugs and pick up trash.
Flowers are possibly the most useless item in all of Gaia. They aren't worth that much. Usually less than one gold each. You can turn them into boquetts and equip them but, again, not worth that much when you sell them. I recommend not bothering to pick them at all.
Bugs are actually useful because you can turn them into ink. It usually takes fifty of the same color bug to make into ink but sometimes you catch special bugs that may be worth one or more inks by themselves. Consider carefully the prices of ink and what this bug may go for on the marketplace before exchanging it, though.
Trash is also somewhat useful. It can be turned into paper hats. It can take fifty, a hundred, or a hundred and fifty of one kind of paper to make a hat. Some hats are worth more than others. Some trash is pretty much useless (newspaper), I recommend learning to recognize it and not picking it up.
Ink Guide:
House flies, cicadas, and fireflies make black ink. Grasshoppers and green dragonflies make green ink. Brown beetles and crickets make brown ink. Red butterflies, red dragonflies, red flies, and red beetles make red ink. Yellow butterflies make yellow ink. Blue dragonflies, beetles, and butterflies make blue ink. Purple flies can be exchanged for one red and one purple ink. Goldenlegs (gold crickets) can be exchanged for gold ink. I do not know which particular bugs can be exchanged for pink, white, or orange ink but I know you can trade in other colors ink to make some ink colors. (If you have more information please post in this thread or PM me.)
Hat Guide:
Xerox paper (it goes by color but it's the same deal for all colors.) : 50 gets you a paper headband. 100 gets you a shade hat. 150 gets you a catband.
Crumpled construction paper: You can get a crown or a spikey hat. (Not sure on these numbers, someone tell me?)
Crumpled Brown Paper Bags: Paper bag hoodie and paper bag cap. (Not sure on these numbers, someone tell me?)
Newspaper: Newspaper combover. (Don't know the number.)
Newsprint: Newsprint Fro and Newsprint Stars. (Don't know numbers.)
More information on this topic? PM or post here. I'll give you credit and gold.
Bonus Gold
Concerning posting in Forums, voting in the Arenas, answering polls, Journaling, and Commenting people's profiles: You can get more gold by spacing out these activities. The closer together you post in forums for example, the less gold you'll get. But if you post many times a day with significant amounts of time in between you'll get more gold for each post.
Investing
Investing, well, I only have a few investment tips for you. Number one is to try to buy things that people like even if you don't personally like them. For example, I don't understand why people like Biancamella (I personally hate pink & gold) but it's currently one of the best-selling evolving items. I happened to buy a second gen one back when the Cash Shop first opened and I sold it for about ten times as much as I bought it for. First generation evolving items are a better investment than any of the others. Pay attention to the announcements when they mention they're rotating something out of the Cash Shop and hurry up and buy some because since the supply is limited the price is going to go up. Another tip is not not buy things when they're brand new because everyone is trying to get one and it drives the price up. Wait until the fuss settles down and then buy. And remember: Patience is the virtue of investing.
Vending
I only really have a couple tips for vending. The first is too look for items that are inflating fast. For example, if the lowest buy price is a solid 50k (there must be several listings around this price for it to be solid) but the average buy price is 40k refresh repeatedly and you might get lucky and someone will list for the average buy price. Snatch it up and then sell it for slightly below the lowest buy price. Another tip is: If something has like four listings and the price has gone up like seven hundred percent then it's not a good idea to buy it, even if someone does list it for the average buy price and the lowest buy price is way above the average.
~~~
Depending on how much money you have to play with depends on what items you look for. The best starting range for marketplacing is about 15-20k, in my humble opinion. But even as low as 10k can get you somewhere. If you go to the marketplace and search 'collectible' It's easiest to sort all the items by price, lowest first. There are quite a few monthly items that don't show up in the search. But there is still a good number that do. Find items you feel you can make a profit from. The lowest Monthly collectible goes for around 8-10k.
Lets say the item you are looking to buy is a Mecha Form. The lowest price on the market place is 10k. The one right after it, the second lowest, is 10.7k. You want at least a 700 gold difference between the item you are going to buy, and the next item. Buy the mecha form, and quickly sell it for 10,699. That way, your item is still the lowest price, You're making roughly a 700 gold profit (-tax).
The item you decide to buy may not always be able to sell. Occasionally prices drop drastically for no reason. If this happens, don't lose hope. You can always keep trying to sell it.
If you can't find collectibles/letters that are within your profit range.. Magical giftboxes, magical trunks, OMG boxes, ancient trunks, cash shop items, and evolving items are all great ideas too.
Always consider the 2% tax when making purchases. I think of it like this: an item for 100k would have a 2,000 tax. for 50k: a 1,000 tax for 25k: a 500 tax for 12.5k: a 250 tax... then for numbers in between those you can always just make an estimate. The exact math doesn't really matter, as long as you have a good guesstamate.
Work in baby steps, it's easy to get frustrated when you're only making a little bit of gold a day. Just remember to keep making money. Puzzles, Word bump, posting, voting, and commenting all are good ways.
(I need more information on the fish that can be caught in the various lakes. If you know, please PM or post here so I can help others. I'll be sure to give you credit for the info.)
Different fishing rods are better for different reasons. Basic fishing rod is kind of flexible, casts okay, and has a reel in range that's straight and kind of narrow. Strength rod is not as flexible and doesn't cast as far but it's harder for the fish to pull away from and the reel in range kind of bells out at the bottom so it's harder to loose fish as you reel them in closer. Distance rod is very flexible and easier for the fish to get away from, it has a long cast distance which can get you better fish and the reel in range is funnel shaped but only gets as narrow as the basic rod range gets. The performance rod is kind of the best of both worlds, it's flexible but not too flexible, it casts fairly far and the reel in range bells out at the bottom and the top but not as much as the Strength or Distance rod respectively. Plus rods are even better. To get a plus rod you can trade in your current rod, plus far, far too much gold for a better rod. Or you can buy one in the Market Place or Exchange forum. I've never used a plus rod but from the description it sounds like they're like the other rods, only better. (Have more information about this? Post or PM me.)
I may as well talk about fishbait now. Grade F is the cheapest and worst. Grade D is second cheapest and a little better than Grade F. Grade A is the most expensive and best. But most expensive is not always the best financially. Better bait attracts better fish but wont help you much if you're a terrible fisher so I guess you have to go on a case-by-case basis. Try it once and if your haul is good enough to justify having bought it (the total amount you can sell the fish for is greater than you bought the bait for) then it's right for you. If not, stick with the free Grade F bait. When buying bait going to the Game Exchange or Market Place is not a bad idea.
When selling your fish and trash you may as well do it in the Market Place, you can get better prices there than you can in the store. Especially since some people go to crazy lengths to get 5000 cans for a tin hat.
The next thing to maximize profits is to consider Exchanging your fish. You can exchange them for other fish (not the best idea, believe me) or equipable items such as gills. These items may be worth a lot more than the fish you make them out of. You can also exchange the trash you collect from fishing. 5000 cans gets you a tin hat. 5000 boots gets you a giant boot you can wear on your head. 5000 tires gets you Big ol' Tire on my head. (I need more information on the items you can make from fish. If you have more information please PM or post here so I can help others. I'll be sure to give you credit. And maybe some gold, too.)
I am by no means an expect on all things Fishing. If you have any more information that may help the readers of this Guide I'll give you full credit for your information and some gold (more gold depending on the amount and quality of your information.)
Gambling
Gambling, there's not much more that I can tell you about gambling. Playing Black-Jack is more time consuming but a better pay-off as far as I'm concerned. Slots has a small chance for a large pay out but Black Jack has a good chance for many small pay-outs. The Black Jack game Gaia has is pretty well explained but there are some things I can tell you. For example, never hit on seventeen or above unless you think the computer has a better hand. If often don't hit on 16 or above when playing Jinx or Cardbot because I noticed I tend to bust more when playing against them. I also never, ever double-down. You're risking more because you double your bet and you only get to hit once that hand.
Cheating. The dealers cheat. Russel Ace has the cheat "Pocket Ace", but he's not very smart and I've noticed he wastes it on times when adding an ace wont let him beat you. Jinx has the cheat "Fresh Start" but sometimes this isn't very helpful. Cardbot can use both of these skills. Unlike when the dealers cheat you cannot affect your own hand. You can only affect the dealer's hand. I recommend saving your rage for when they have a ten or an ace showing. I always do the redraw option instead of peeking.
Beating the dealers is always cool. You get a bonus for beating each of them. Twenty-five tickets for Russel Ace, fifty tickets for Jinx and one-hundred tickets for Cardbot.
The computer never hits on seventeen or over so if you have a twenty and they have say, ten then they hit and get eighteen you win without them busting. The computer always hits under seventeen though, even if they've already beat your hand. They loose by busting a lot.
Games
I've pretty much said everything there is to say about games. I'll add some links to specific game-guides soon, though. If you have any information I didn't include in the previous post I'd like to hear it. PM or post here, please.
Towns
You can go and make gold by wandering around in towns. Shaking bushes, rocks, and trees can get you a few gold. You can also pick flowers, catch bugs and pick up trash.
Flowers are possibly the most useless item in all of Gaia. They aren't worth that much. Usually less than one gold each. You can turn them into boquetts and equip them but, again, not worth that much when you sell them. I recommend not bothering to pick them at all.
Bugs are actually useful because you can turn them into ink. It usually takes fifty of the same color bug to make into ink but sometimes you catch special bugs that may be worth one or more inks by themselves. Consider carefully the prices of ink and what this bug may go for on the marketplace before exchanging it, though.
Trash is also somewhat useful. It can be turned into paper hats. It can take fifty, a hundred, or a hundred and fifty of one kind of paper to make a hat. Some hats are worth more than others. Some trash is pretty much useless (newspaper), I recommend learning to recognize it and not picking it up.
Ink Guide:
House flies, cicadas, and fireflies make black ink. Grasshoppers and green dragonflies make green ink. Brown beetles and crickets make brown ink. Red butterflies, red dragonflies, red flies, and red beetles make red ink. Yellow butterflies make yellow ink. Blue dragonflies, beetles, and butterflies make blue ink. Purple flies can be exchanged for one red and one purple ink. Goldenlegs (gold crickets) can be exchanged for gold ink. I do not know which particular bugs can be exchanged for pink, white, or orange ink but I know you can trade in other colors ink to make some ink colors. (If you have more information please post in this thread or PM me.)
Hat Guide:
Xerox paper (it goes by color but it's the same deal for all colors.) : 50 gets you a paper headband. 100 gets you a shade hat. 150 gets you a catband.
Crumpled construction paper: You can get a crown or a spikey hat. (Not sure on these numbers, someone tell me?)
Crumpled Brown Paper Bags: Paper bag hoodie and paper bag cap. (Not sure on these numbers, someone tell me?)
Newspaper: Newspaper combover. (Don't know the number.)
Newsprint: Newsprint Fro and Newsprint Stars. (Don't know numbers.)
More information on this topic? PM or post here. I'll give you credit and gold.
Bonus Gold
Concerning posting in Forums, voting in the Arenas, answering polls, Journaling, and Commenting people's profiles: You can get more gold by spacing out these activities. The closer together you post in forums for example, the less gold you'll get. But if you post many times a day with significant amounts of time in between you'll get more gold for each post.
Investing
Investing, well, I only have a few investment tips for you. Number one is to try to buy things that people like even if you don't personally like them. For example, I don't understand why people like Biancamella (I personally hate pink & gold) but it's currently one of the best-selling evolving items. I happened to buy a second gen one back when the Cash Shop first opened and I sold it for about ten times as much as I bought it for. First generation evolving items are a better investment than any of the others. Pay attention to the announcements when they mention they're rotating something out of the Cash Shop and hurry up and buy some because since the supply is limited the price is going to go up. Another tip is not not buy things when they're brand new because everyone is trying to get one and it drives the price up. Wait until the fuss settles down and then buy. And remember: Patience is the virtue of investing.
Vending
I only really have a couple tips for vending. The first is too look for items that are inflating fast. For example, if the lowest buy price is a solid 50k (there must be several listings around this price for it to be solid) but the average buy price is 40k refresh repeatedly and you might get lucky and someone will list for the average buy price. Snatch it up and then sell it for slightly below the lowest buy price. Another tip is: If something has like four listings and the price has gone up like seven hundred percent then it's not a good idea to buy it, even if someone does list it for the average buy price and the lowest buy price is way above the average.
~~~
Depending on how much money you have to play with depends on what items you look for. The best starting range for marketplacing is about 15-20k, in my humble opinion. But even as low as 10k can get you somewhere. If you go to the marketplace and search 'collectible' It's easiest to sort all the items by price, lowest first. There are quite a few monthly items that don't show up in the search. But there is still a good number that do. Find items you feel you can make a profit from. The lowest Monthly collectible goes for around 8-10k.
Lets say the item you are looking to buy is a Mecha Form. The lowest price on the market place is 10k. The one right after it, the second lowest, is 10.7k. You want at least a 700 gold difference between the item you are going to buy, and the next item. Buy the mecha form, and quickly sell it for 10,699. That way, your item is still the lowest price, You're making roughly a 700 gold profit (-tax).
The item you decide to buy may not always be able to sell. Occasionally prices drop drastically for no reason. If this happens, don't lose hope. You can always keep trying to sell it.
If you can't find collectibles/letters that are within your profit range.. Magical giftboxes, magical trunks, OMG boxes, ancient trunks, cash shop items, and evolving items are all great ideas too.
Always consider the 2% tax when making purchases. I think of it like this: an item for 100k would have a 2,000 tax. for 50k: a 1,000 tax for 25k: a 500 tax for 12.5k: a 250 tax... then for numbers in between those you can always just make an estimate. The exact math doesn't really matter, as long as you have a good guesstamate.
Work in baby steps, it's easy to get frustrated when you're only making a little bit of gold a day. Just remember to keep making money. Puzzles, Word bump, posting, voting, and commenting all are good ways.

Avoiding Hacks & Scams (Updated Friday June 6th)
Note: I decided that even though this isn't exactly a way to make gold it is a way to keep it and it's also very important.
Number one most important thing and I cannot possibly stress this enough: Gaia will never ever, for any reason, not until the sun explodes and the earth becomes vaporized, ask for your password or any other personal information. That means that if anyone, claiming to be a moderator or whatever, asks for your password or other information DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM. In fact: NEVER GIVE OUT ACCOUNT INFORMATION!
Side-note about passwords: You should have all heard this by now but please pick a password that is not simply "password" or your pets name. Those are the top two passwords, which is kind of sad. Also, you might not want to use the minimum number of characters the shorter and simpler (less varied, meaning no capitals or numbers) your password is the easier it is for a computer program called a 'cracker' to systematically try the right combination and get access to your account without you doing anything wrong. This goes for everything, not just Gaia.
Next, in your account preferences there's an option for Gaia to alert you whenever you click a link that takes you away from the site. This means if you click an ad or a link leading to a scam. It might be an occasional nuisance but it can prevent you from getting hacked. For example, you might click a link in the forum that should lead you to someplace else on Gaia but instead it leads you to a Gaia-look-alike and it may appear that you were logged out from the site and have to log back in. If you have the 'alert me when I leave the site' option enabled it will tell you you've gone to another site instead of another portion of Gaiaonline. Note: This will only happen if you are browsing Gaia and click a link that takes you outside the site.
Moderators and administrators of Gaia have colored usernames or username tags. If someone claims to be a moderator but has a plain black username is means they are a user of Gaiaonline not an employee and they are trying to steal from you.
Never complete a trade with anyone if the item is giftwrapped or they say that it 'wont go through in the trade, they'll have to gift it to you after you give them their money.'
Just as a general rule, don't click random links in the forums or that someone unfamiliar to you pmed you with.
Do not fall for the: "I'm having a give-away" scam. While some people on Gaia are very generous and do give away items it's pretty easy to tell whose threads are genuine (they tend to have a well laid-out format, well laid-out rules, and include proof that they own whatever they're giving away) and which are scams (are they still wearing starter clothes and have a starter haircut?)
You cannot buy other people's accounts. Anyone trying to sell an account (for gold, no less) is trying to scam you.
There is no such thing as an "item generator" of any kind. I have seen this scam several times. Don't believe it.
Anyone trying to get you to sign up for another site (that they may or may not own) may also be trying to scam you. It might surprise you but loads of people use the same password for everything and hackers expect you to as well so when you sign up for their site they now know what your password is and can log into your account and steal your stuff.
If you receive a pm from a user you do not recognize and you get a drop-down asking for your username and password (this is how you log in to some websites) and saying that this is a temporary measure for the weekend to prove you are not a bot it is a scam! Do not enter any information. Simply click cancel or quit your browser application. I have no idea how they did this but even if this was an anti-bot measure Gaia would have announced it so therefore it's not real. Don't do it.
Alright, this isn't a scam or a hack but I have to say it. People might offer to let you download or use or whatever something that auto-refereshes or auto-fishes or plays cards for you or does anything that involves no human interaction between you and the computer, just a program poking the internet repeatedly. You might not realize it but this is called "botting." Botting is against Gaia's TOS, if you are caught botting you will be banned. Do not be tempted by anyone offering you a service like this, they will catch you.
Thanks to Z_darkflame for the following two educational links. And to Spacepiratecatdude for checking them out and telling me what they were about because my internet connection fails. Stupid Hacker. Grrr... This link shows the "hacker" and their attempts at weaseling passwords and names out of people. Then this link how it was done shows how it was done because the first part wasn't real.
As I think of, or discover more, or am informed of more hacks and scams they will be added here so check for updates.
Bump if you appreciated this portion of the guide.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
If you have any questions about the information here or whatever please feel free to PM me or post here and if I think it's a reasonable question I'll not only answer you I'll add it here for others to be edified by.
Concerning Guilds: There is no financial benefit to opening a Guild. It costs 20,000 gold to open one and while you can charge people to join you have to have some incentive for them to join and pay for the privilege of doing so.
Quests (The NPC kind, not the other kind): Basically after you finish the newbie quest there are two kinds of quests out there for you to do. The first are event-orient quests, like the recent quest from Liam. The second are promotion quests, where you watch advertizement or whatever to get a quest item. Recent quests can be found by going to the News and Events portion of the site and looking for a title that mentions a quest. Remember, most quests can be completed multiple times (usually three), so you might as well do it all three times.
I don't know my password! When Gaia askes you for a password for trading, selling stuff on the Marketplace, buying stuff in the market place, giving gifts, etc. it means they want your log-in password. If you do not know what this is you can have the pass-word retrieval system send you your password in an e-mail.

Banner & Bump Contests!
Currently holding Banner & Bump Contests!
Banner Contest: This thread needs banners! I want a lot of them. *looks at you significantly* So I have some great prizes. There are three different letters to choose from for the first prize winner. Be creative. Make it move. Make it cool. Try to make it readible. Banners will be judged solely on how well I like them (because hey, it's my thread and my money) I would like to have at least ten banners before I begin judging. (I reserve the right to end the contest early on the grounds of some-one making a perfect banner but I will still give a one-week notice before closing.) Once I have ten I will give the rest of you late-comers a one-week notice to finish and submit your banners. Submissions may be pmed to me or posted here. You may submit multiple times but no one person may win multiple prizes.
Banner Contest Prizes:
1st Prize: Winner can choose from: July 07, November 07 & April 08 thank you letters (or take a 15k equivalent in gold.)
2ond Prize: 5k gold.
3rd prize: 2k gold.
Banner Contest Entrants
My first Entry! I'd like to thank Beautiful Ambition for breaking the ice with the contest.

Click here if you can't see it.
Bump Contest: Every week I will give out a prize to the greatest bumper of more than 100 bumps in separate posts. I say this to protect myself from having to give a prize to someone who bumped like... four times on a really slow week. You must number all your bumps/posts to be eligible to win. Chatting is encouraged but don't forget to number. Bump contests run from Saturday at 12:01 AM EST to Friday at 11:59 PM EST. Each week is a new one so you must start over at bump number one each saturday. A single person may only win once per Calendar Month (ex. If you win in the first week of July you cannot win again until August) to be fair to everyone so the same person doesn't win week after week.
Bump Contest Prize(s):
5k to the Winner.
That's it. It's that simple.
If you are a bot, on the black-list, a hired bumper, a scammer or a hacker you are not eligible to win any prizes.
Winners Circle:
Just_h3r 06/14/08 - 06/20/08
Lord Chaos Tiamet 06/21/08 - 06/27/08

Suggestions?
If you have any suggestions on how I can make this thread better, please pm me. If you have any information I might add, please pm me or post here. I'll even give gold for information. biggrin
Also, if you find any mistakes, links that go to the wrong places or whatever there is a reward out for them. You tell me in a pm where I made a mistake or where something needs to be fixed and I'll give you some gold. Chyeah, real gold for helping me make this thread a little better.
Helpers:
Never_Unhugable pointed out I spelled Bass'ken wrong and was awarded a small gold donation.

Affiliates:

Alenore's quest for One Million White Daisies. Affiliated for her 'Guide to your first 100k' click the link to read it in it's entirety or look through my guides to find the portions contributed by Alenore.

Okay so I'm not technically officially affiliated but I love this petition so I decided to add their banner here. It's a petition to have the option to pass-word protect your storage locker with a different password than your account so that it's much harder to steal all your stuff if someone hacks you.

Donators heart
All donations received go directly toward funding the prizes that are given out on contests that are held by this thread. They are not for my benefit. The money from donations will be held on a separate account from this one so as not to be confused with my money. Any cost for a prize that is not covered by donations comes out of my personal funds so... Donate? Every little bit counts even just some trash or bugs or whatever.
Donator List:
heart Bitter Skull Candy- 469g heart ~First Donator~
Jace- 9,531g as of 06/28/08
