Sooooo I couldn't really google this so I'm asking Gaians:

I recently brought a massager from a different country into north america.
The massager uses 220V, where as all our plugs here are 110V.
The massager says 220V~, but I have a plug adapter which doesn't convert the voltage, but simply lets me plug the massager into the outlet.

When I turned the massager on, it was noticeably weaker strength, (about half as much I'm guessing) the person working at the store I bought the plug adapter said that since I'm using a smaller voltage (110V) on the appliance that normally uses 220V, it'll be half as strong but it won't damage it. Whereas if I plugged a 110V appliance to a 220V outlet, itll damage it, which makes sense.

Is this true? The massager works better if you put it on a stronger setting, but I'm just afraid it will damage the massager or something if I keep using it like this with only the plug adapter.
Do I need to buy a voltage converter, or can I keep using the plug adapter??

Thanks.

You should stop, and get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Seven-Star-110-220-Transformer-Converter/dp/B000AY5D1W

(A simple massager might work fine on the wrong voltage for years, but why risk it when it's only $20 for a transformer?)
It's actually 1/4 of the power because power is voltage squared.

And yes it is safe run to "dumb" appliances like a hair dryer or massager at a lower voltage but when it doesn't work right what's the point?
110/220, Whatever it takes.

This is why I stay home.
