In order for every shop to go smoothly, there needs to be rules. Failure to follow these rules will result in blacklisting/greylisting.

    The Golden Rules

      1. No profanity, fighting or drama! Be respectful to everyone at all times.
      2. Only send PMs to Yaxun Balam, the shop mule.
      3. Keep in mind that the shopkeepers have IRL lives; also, respect them and their decisions. (Note that in Sirenz's or Rabid's absence, PM the shop mule your problems and they will be dealt with upon our return.)
      4. Art theft is NOT allowed. This includes non-staff taking the b'alam art and coloring it.
      5. No advertising! Keep it in your sig.
      6. No refunds will ever be given.
      7. Payment for all b'alam is due within 24 hours. If they aren't paid for, they will be re-sold.
      8. Do not ask for a job or to guest color. We will seek YOU out if we want you to guest color. wink
      9. Up to 2 people can co-own flatsale and raffle b'alam; up to 3 people can co-own auction b'alam.
      10. You may own as many b'alam as you can afford to take care of.
      11. Selling b'alam cubs by yourself is against the rules. If you choose to sell a cub, it must be done through the shop, via raffle. You'll be limited to a maximum of two breedings for your pet, and you're only allowed one raffle ever. Period!
      12. Bribing owners for their b'alam is NOT allowed. If anyone tries it, both parties will be subject to consequences!
      13. No claiming or putting 'dibs' on copyrighted characters such as those from movies, books, etc. That doesn't mean you can't quest for them, just that you can't prevent others from questing for the same character. It just isn't fair! A cosplay pet isn't yours 100% until it's tagged with your name on it.
      14. Do not ask someone if you can co-own their pet. The only person who can ask for co-ownership is the owner.

Golden RP Rules

1. Use whatever tense the creator of the RP went with (present or past)
2. If RPing with your avatar, create a Mayan persona for him/her. In the world of the B'alam every human is a Mayan. More about this in the guild.
3. Humans can understand what a b'alam is saying and vice versa.
4. Try to not to leave anyone out. Give people a chance to join in.
5. No god-moding. Not even if you're a god. wink
6. Try to use (( and )) for OOC talk....it's required only when people are RPing in the thread. How you handle it in private threads is up to you.
7. When RPing your B'alam, it is recommended that you use a text color.
8. If you don't own a b'alam and/or don't want to use a Mayan persona for your avatar, then you can use any pet to RP with.
9. Drawing/commissioning art of a jaguar and RPing it as a b'alam is not allowed.
10. Dream b'alam don't exist yet in this world, and so are not allowed to be RPed in the guild or thread.
11. You must wait 3 weeks before picking a breeding mate for a new b'alam adult.
12. If your b'alam already has a breeding mate and they still want to flirt romantically with another, you should make an (( OOC )) post stating that to the other person.
13. Non-cosplays cannot take the name of a cosplay character and they cannot take that cosplay's personality either.
14. Accents other than an "American accent" are allowed if the b'alam has a backstory about why they speak that way. RP is usually conducted in a standard American accent since 95% of owners come from America. You can also RP in another language if the person you are RPing with is fluent too. If you are from another country yourself and don't know what an American accent is, then just RP how you normally do.

Donators
Ran-Ran-Chan - 2500g
*You may donate to any breeder, colorist, or other staff member without any approval from the shopkeepers. A donation is your business so you do not need to ask in order to do it. Send the donation directly to the staff. Do not expect anything in return for your donation because it is a donation! All donations to staff should be clearly marked as such.*

Whitelist
All b'alam owners
All b'alam staff
We heart you!

Greylist
(Those on greylist can't get any b'alam or participate in any shop activities until their time is up.)

Blacklist
(Those on blacklist usually remain here permanently at the discretion of the shop owners. They can't get anymore b'alam, post in the thread or guild, and they can't participate in any activities.)
Lockesly L`Crit-excessive drama/bullying in many other shops and general annoyance.

Story by Jinxeh

Sacred power fills the jungle.
An ancient power that ripens on the heavy vines. It courses through the warm air on heady days, shivers on the sticky sap of magnificent trees, seeps through the earth itself and into the stones of the great Temple of the B’alam.
Here, young b’alam tumble upon the sunlit steps leading into the temple. Others hunt and seek within the jungle world overgrowing their own. One day, they will be old enough to challenge each other in the game of Pitz, but for now, they are all lively abandon, their tails swishing playfully in the jungle heat.
This is the height of the Mayan civilization. The people look to the great jaguars known as b'alam for protection and strength. The young king, Yaxun Balam, rules wisely and well. But it was not always so…

Before the temple was built, before the b’alam took upon themselves their role as the people’s protectors, there was bloodshed between the people and the animals and the jungle thrived brutal and wild. How many lost their sons and daughters? How many lost their nestlings and cubs? It seemed the war would never end, and the people shouted in the night and the animals howled under the light of the stars.
What was it that they fought over?
They fought over shelter.
They fought over food.
They fought over water.
They fought over the essence of the jungle, and many suffered and died.
Then one day it happened. A young girl was lost in the jungle. She did not know how to find her way home and she wandered lost beneath the drooping vines. On that same day a young b’alam cub was lost in the jungle. He, too, did not know how to find his way home. Each wandered separately, but as night fell, they sought shelter beneath the tangled branches of a tree-
Only to find the other there.
“This tree is mine!” the girl cried, seizing a heavy stick from the ground.
“I found the tree first,” the cub growled and he flexed his claws.
“Leave or I’ll hit you!”
“I will bite you!”
The two began to fight, but neither was experienced in the ways of their elders. The girl’s attacks did not leave any bruises and the cub’s bites would not go through clothing.
How long they fought they did not know, but at last, their strength wore out. Each sank into the lush moss growing at the base of the tree, unable to fight anymore.
The girl was the first to speak. “I’m hungry. It’s your fault I’m too tired to find food.”
The cub growled. “If you hadn’t got in my way, I’d have been able to hunt.”
Both of them foraged feebly for food, but there was little to be found around the base of the tree. Exhausted and hungry, the two of them prepared to wait out the night, but they quickly fell asleep.
The next morning, the girl went looking for water.
She found it pooling in the centre of a beautiful flower. She was about to drink when the cub leapt up from behind. He tried to reach the water before her, but as he pushed her away, the petals of the flower broke. The water drained away, quickly seeping into the soil.
“Look what you’ve done!” the girl cried.
“It’s your fault! You were in the way!” the cub growled.
Hungry and thirsty, the two of them fought again, but just as before, they were not very good at fighting.
This is how it continued for the next day and the next and the next. Each would try to find water and food, but before they could take it, the other would disturb them. By the end of the fourth day, they were exhausted and starving, and each felt they could not take it anymore.
It was then that they found the stone idol. It was not food and it was not water, but as they passed it, its jewels gleamed in the sunlight.
“What is it doing here?” the girl asked out loud, unable to resist its beauty.
“What is it doing here?” the cub wondered, amazed at how the idol resembled his people.
In that moment, they forgot how much they hated each other, and the cub was the first to notice the fruit growing on the tree high above them. He leapt up high but was too small to reach it. The girl, when she noticed it, reached up, but was too short to reach it. Each continued like this for some time without success.
And then the girl had the idea: what if she stood upon the idol? She tried this but the fruit was still too far away. Yet if she could only reach a little bit further…
The girl looked down at the jaguar.
He might be the right height.
Neither of them said anything at first.
Then the girl spoke. “Will you-“
“I could-“ the cub said at the same time, then stopped.
Each looked at the other.
Then the girl tried again: “Will you jump and get the fruit if I hold you?”
The cub hesitated. Then he nodded. He allowed himself to be picked up by the girl, and he was able to reach the fruit. He pulled it down but then he hesitated. Should he share it? He looked at the girl again, then took a bite from the fruit. He gave her the other half. This, the girl devoured in an instant. Still hungry and thirsty, both of them looked up at the fruit that remained.
“Will you help me again?” the girl asked.
“I will,” the cub said.
In this way, and with the help of the idol, they were able to reach enough fruit to fill their bellies. And when they were done, each looked at the other, and wondered why they should fight. Both of them were still lost, but if they put their heads together, perhaps they would find their way home.
The cub was the one who suggested it.
The girl hesitated, and then agreed.
And in this way, they managed to find their way out of the deepest part of the jungle, and they carried with them the idol that had saved them.
But the people and the animals were still fighting. It would be many years before the girl and the cub were old enough to make peace between their people. This they eventually did, and used the idol as a symbol to unite their people, but this tale, along with the tale of the building of the Temple of B’alam, is another story.

Flatsales
Price: 6k
There are many ways we conduct flatsales at this shop including....
1 The RP Way-This is usually done for rare colored and Yaxuns. A prompt will be under the idol. You have 20 minutes to write out at least a paragraph in response. Whoever answered the prompt the best will get the pet. A flatsale price of 10k applies.
2. The Speed Way-as the name implies, we post 'go' and you dash to claim your pet. Speed sales may or may not have additional specific instructions, so pay attention!
3. The Trivia Way-Again, pretty self-explanitory.
4. The Glyph Scavenger Hunt Way-I use the mule and my own account to post glyphs throughout the shop that have numbers. You have to find the glyphs and then post them in the thread and post the page number they were found on. The order of the people who post determine who gets first pick, second pick, etc.
5. The Picture Way- I ask for a picture and then roll the dice. You have to post the picture with image tags and roll the correct total that I roll. Also, fill out a form when you post.

Flatsale Rules
1. Do not whine if you don't win..just try again next time.
2. Be kind to others and do not guilt trip anyone out of trying
3. Only one per person, per post.
4. You can get one for someone else, but make sure to let us know beforehand.
5. Payment is due ASAP after the sale. If in 24 hours the trade isn't confirmed the pet goes up for sale again.
5. These are not RP required.
6. Only 2 people may co-own flatsale pets

User Image
Auctions
Auctions start at 6k for regular B'alam and 10k for rarer B'alam. They usually last a week, although some could last longer. The minimum increasement is 1k and the autobuy varies or is not set. Also, there is an anti snipe guard. Every bid made close to the ending time has a grace period of 30 minutes.

Auction Rules

1. Do not guilt trip anyone out of bidding!
2. Do not form massive cheerleading squads for an individual bidder. "good luck" shouts are welcome.
3. Up to 3 people may co-own.
4. These are not RP required.
5. No drama allowed in the thread.
6. Payment due ASAP after 24 hours, the pet goes back up for sale.
7. No anonymous bidding.
8. Items accepted at 10% under TekTek

Pet/Art Trades
exclaim Now considering art/pet trades exclaim
We generally like pets that look professionally done with really nice coloring. Also ones that have many stages and have an active shop. Rabid loves equine, dogs, cats and well everything xD. Sirenz loves equine, dogs, cats, and anthro pets the most. She prefer non-RP required pets unless the RP looks interesting enough. For Tara any pet trades must be RP-exempt. Cosplays are her passion. If you don't see your shop on this list but you're interested, just PM her. She doesn't get out much, but is always on the lookout for more cosplays. xd

If you have a pet that is not on this list, but has the criteria listed above you may PM Yaxun Balam. Do not be upset if we turn you down because we can be very picky. If we do not respond back in a few days, but the message is in your sent box (instead of your outbox) it means we are not interested. PM only once please.

The way it works is if it is you who asks for the trade, you need to give us the pet first. Then you get your pet. If we are the one who asks then we will give your b'alam first.

-Stages-
1) Idol: You are given a hand carved idol statue that you must keep with you at all times to attract a young b'alam cub. If you are in the thread a lot then this increases the chances that the cub will arrive faster.

2) Cub: Now that the cute and cuddly b'alam cub has become your friend then it's time to teach them all that you know. Please be friendly to the cub by playing with them often. If you ignore your cub then the b'alam will grow up to be a neglected adult that doesn't like humans!

3) Adult: B'alam aduts are fierce as well as loving. They will protect their human from all the dangers of the surrounding jungle. B'alam adults are at the top of the food chain in the entire area!

4) Elder: These are adults that have become gods. They are adorned with elaborate jewerly and headdresses.

-Kinds-
Lum-il - Your average land dwelling b'alam. These resemble jaguars the most of any other species of this lovable cat. Normals usually have better speed than other kinds of b'alam.

Yaxun - These b'alam have beautiful bird wings and can fly high altitudes. Yaxun means "bird" in Mayan so these magnificent animals live up to that name with their aerial skills.

Pepen - These kinds of b'alam are very rare and resemble butterflies, dragonflies, moths, and other insects/bugs with wings. They are slightly smaller than other type of b'alam and their bones weigh less like the Yaxun so they can fly. Pepen help the flowers in the jungle around the temple flourish.

more kinds to be discovered!

User Image

-Breeds-
Kuxtal - These b'alams are colored to elements existing in nature such as plants and animals. They have better instincts compared to other breeds.

K'in - These b'alam are colored like elements such as fire, ice, water, etc. They usually have a glow about them and some can use powers!

Che-le - These b'alam can be colored any way the owner wants. If your b'alam doesn't fit into any other breed they are usually che-le.

K'ohb'a - These b'alam look very familiar to the right eyes....

More breeds to be discovered!

User Image

-Paths-
B'alam can decide to take one of four paths to take. These paths help to develop their personality and give them a clan to belong to. B'alams in opposite paths may become enemies but if they work out their differences, a strong friendship can develop. Those of different paths may breed together as well as breeding within members of their own path respectively. When a b'alam is given out or born, they usually have a light path but this can be changed by the owner. The maximum times a path can be changed for a single b'alam is three times.

1) Light - This is the most common path that is taken by good-natured b'alam. Ill-tempered b'alam can choose the light path too if they don't mind being with the shiny happy kitties. The sun is where they get their strength from so feel their best during the day. Light path b'alam like to sleep during the night so they can enjoy their day under the warmth of the sun. In folklore their equivalent is the Smiling Jaguar (associated with the yellow, black spotted variety).

2) Night - B'alam with sly, cunning, or grumpy tempers will usually take the night path but some good-natured b'alam can too! These b'alam like to sleep during the day so they can be awake at night under the moon which gives them their strength. In folklore theirs is the Night Jaguar (associated with the solid black variety)

3) Dark - B'alam who are very evil and malicious will usually take this path. It's reserved for the nastiest cats who love warring. Insane b'alam can belong to this path too. These beasts get their powers from the shadows during the day and absolute darkness during lunar eclipse or whenever the clouds cover the moon at night. They barely sleep during the day or night!

4) Nothing - B'alam who don't want to be in the other paths will choose this one. Those in the nothing path have varied tempers while some may be loners or outcasts.

Here is where you will find the various services the shop offers to its customers!

-Breeding-
When a b'alam adult has aged 2 weeks as an adult either by a growing or in their owner's care they can find a mate. The couple can decide if they want children or not. B'alams can decide if they want to life mate or a casual mate if they want kids but not a committed relationship with another b'alam. The max they may breed is 3 times!

If so, they must climb the 100 steps of the Temple of Ixchel (midwife goddess) and leave 12,000 gold pieces at the alter (send a trade of 12k/6k per owner to Yaxun Balam). The trek up the temple isn't always available so a couple must wait for a guide (breeder) to escort them since that is the tradition. A couple that goes alone will anger Ixchel who won't give them any cubs..ever!

They will be given idols colored like their babies by Yaxun Balam. After 3 days-1 week if the couple has proved themselves worthy of being parents by RPing or their owners chat in the thread/guild the goddess will leave the cubs in place of the idols. The goddess will still leave the cubs even if the couple and owners drop off the face of the earth to never be seen again but it will take much longer (more than a week).

If a guide is open below and posts "go" in the thread then please claim a guiding slot. It's first come/first serve for now but in the future if there are lots of adults who want to breed, a raffle. After you get a guide you can choose to RP the couple's trek to the top of the temple or not..it's up to you. Those who do usually please the godess Ixchel more. The guide will be with you (but the breeder may not have time to RP with you so just god mod them in that case) during the climb.

Here you will find answers to commonly asked questions pertaining to the b'alam!

Q: Who are the b'alam?
A: The jaguar, dweller in the forest and lord of the wild. They protect the people from the dangers of the jungle and are their friends. With the development of strength, speed, and endurance in the game of pitz they can claim the elder/god status by becoming a champion.

Q: Who are they in Mayan Folklore?
A: The b'alams are a group of four entities who are the progenitors of humankind, in Quiche tradition. They were originally Godlike in form and power, created by Gucumatz, Huracan, and Tepeu from stalks of maize to govern the four quadrants of the earth. Granted the ability to see all things, no matter how well hidden, they drew upon themselves the jealousy of other divinities, who clouded their sight and reduced them to human level. They were : B'alam Agab (Night Jaguar), B'alam Quitze (Smiling Jaguar), Iqi B'alam (Dark Jaguar), and Mahucatah (Not Right Now).
Source: Mayan Pantheon

Q: How do you pronounce b'alam?
A: I have no idea how the Mayans officially pronounced it but until I find out, just pronounce how it sounds "Ba-Lamb". >.<;

Q: What is pitz?
A: It's a game the ancient Mayans played, similar to basketball. The ball is made by covering a skull with strips of rubber from the rubber tree and is very hard. The object of the game is to pass the ball through a stone hoop placed high in the court. More details explained in the game post.

Q: How does a b'alam become an elder?
A: They must collect enough points while playing pitz as an adult. Also it can be done if they roleplay a ton, show leadership and kindness towards others, and other ways. If we feel your b'alam deserves to be an elder you will get a PM from the shop. You can decide if you want your pet colored into the elder stage or not.

Q: How does a b'alam elder become a god?
A: Only the most powerful elders can achieve god status and reclaim their place as a Jaguar god. According to legend, the first jaguar gods were turned into humans after they abused their power. With outstanding scores in pitz, awesome roleplay, and a strong presence around the thread/guild can make the gods (shopkeepers) view your b'alam elder worthy of this gift. Gods receive access to the god subforum in the guild, get customized jewerly, and more!

Q: What are Yaxun?
A: They are b'alam that have birdlike wings! More about them in the "B'alam" post.

Q: How long will it take for me to attract a cub with my idol?
A: If you post in the shop or guild by role playing and/or chatting then your chances of the cub arriving will be faster (3 days - 1 week). When this event occurs, your post that triggered the cub's arrival will be quoted and the cub's untagged image will appear. After you have named your cub (if you hadn't already named the idol) then it will be tagged in place of the idol. If you never come by the shop and disappear forever after obtaining an idol then your cub will appear much later (1 week+)! sad

Q: When will my cub grow to an adult? I wanna play pitz!
A: If you role play and/or chat in the thread or guild then the cub will grow to an adult faster (2 weeks-3 weeks) than if you fell off the ends of the earth never to be seen again (3 weeks+).

Q: How do they breed?
After a b'alam has been an adult for 2 weeks or an owner has had them for that long, then they can find a mate. The b'alam couple can decide whether or not they wish to have children. If so, then both must climb the 100 steps up to the Temple of Ixchel and place 12,000 gold pieces on the alter of the goddess. Within 3 days-1 week (or longer) depending on the owners' activity in the thread, 2-4 idols will be given to the b'alam couple. This is done so the goddess Ixchel will know where to drop the cubs at when the couple has proven themselves worthy of being parents. They can prove themselves through RP or their owners activity. Even if the couple do not RP and their owners disappear off the ends of the earth the cubs will still come but it may be much later than if they had stuck around.

Q: 1 w4NN4 |3414M p3t n0Wz |=0r fr33!!!111one!!!eleven!!!!11
A: If you talk like that then you will never get one. We won't tolerate any leet speak here. If you ask for a free pet you won't ever get one either since that is begging and against the rules!

Q: How come ______ got one for free?
A: They may have gotten a b'alam as a gift. wink

Q: Who drew the b'alam?
A: It was Leelakin!
