JANUARY 20, 2010:: So here is another annoucement-- attuning has officially been done away with. Now the way to obtain elemental adults is through breeding, customs, and other methods like fses and such. Sorry to disappoint anyone, HOWEVER, instead of essences Luke will have another way to change the element of your Palui-- probably quests.

Breeding is also changed-- now all adult palui including neutral ones can have 2-5 babies! Yaaaaaay! Also we are considering allowing homosexual breedings, since the lineart isn't gender specific anyway! So czech out the front page breeding post as I remove any vestiges of mentions of attuning. C:

However, if it looks like you haven’t read the front page carefully enough we may ignore you. Sorry.
- Don't PM Leikkun or Nata about the shop. Please. We love you, but not that much, and we do read the thread.
- Art thieves will be fed to rabid Palui.
- No advertising, please.

General:

Q. How do I get a Palui?
A. Flatsales, raffles, auctions, events and sometimes customs and bribes.
But if you're nice and hang around a lot you might get one too! 8D

Q. Dude, they look like Eevee evolutions!
A. Yes, the general idea was taken from the Eevees.

Q. Can I get one for free?
A. It is possible! But do not go asking in shop to have one. If you’re nice and
active, it may just happen. Other than that we're going to give out a lot of free
Palui through games. ;D

Q. How much for a Palui?
A. See the availability post. (:

Q. Can I co-own?

A. No. Co-owning invites too much trouble. We may allow it for certain auction
pets, but mostly... no. (8

Q. Do I have to host the image?
A. While your Palui is growing, we ask that you direct link your cert. Once it
has reached its adult stage feel free to save to your own server!

Q. Do you accept items?
A. Depends on the item! Generally, MCs and rares with a value above 50K will
be accepted.

Q. Pet trades? Bribes? ;D

A. Possible. Ask and you may receive! Don’t be offended if you get turned down though!

Q. Can I get a refund for whatever reason?
A. No refunds, unless within the Gaia rules.

Q. When will my Palui grow?
A. The growth rate is set at 5 days between bundle and kitten stage, and a few weeks
between kitten and adult stage.

Q. My Palui grew, but now his markings look different! What happened?

A. The markings get more interesting as the Palui gets older. If you don’t like how
the new markings look, talk to the colorist and we’ll see what we can do.

Q. There are so many common Palui! Why don’t you sell more Dark and Light Palui?!
A. Common Palui are just that. Common. Dark and Light are rare – we’d like to
keep them that way <3

Q. How many can I have?
A. As many as you want and can pay for <3

Q. I don't want my Palui anymore, what can I do?
A. Palui are not rp required, so you can keep it even if you disappear from the shop.
However, if you want to give someone else a chance, give it back to us and we’ll
put it up for adoption or some other free event. You cannot resell it, however.

Q. Are you hiring any kind of staff?
A. Possibly… we’ll announce if we do!

Roleplay:

Q. RP required?
A. No. But like everywhere else, RPing has its advantages. A Palui that is not RPed
will grow slowly, since we’re more likely to remember you have a growing if you’re
around. There may be other perks to rping too. However, we won't ever take away your pet.

Q. Where can I RP?
A. For simple “action” rping, the thread is fine. Full sentence rps are asked to stay in the guild.

Q. Can my Palui be wild?!
A. Yes. Palui can be wild, if you want them to be. However, you still need to apply
for an essence in the usual way. You cannot attune them however you want just
because they are wild.

Q. Is it possible to catch a wild Palui if I don’t want it to be wild anymore?

A. Sure. Go ahead. ^^

Breeding:

Q. Can Palui Breed?
A. Yep. But only after they are mature (two weeks after they grow to their neutral stage)
or are attuned.

Q. What do I have to do to breed?

A. You must have two adult Palui that have been at their adult stage for at least two
weeks. One of them must be owned by you, and the other must be owned by a
different person. Breeding slots will typically be raffled off on a monthly basis, and
you can enter your pair for free. You'll have to pay the breeding fee if you win though!

Somewhere off in warm, tropical waters sits a small, oft-overlooked island, its inhabitants thriving on the isolated shore. For many years the land went untouched by the outside world, but then one day a small ship carrying a group of marine biologists was blown off course, pushing them into the island's waters. The large storm blew up from the west, nearly capsizing the boat, and one unfortunate scientist fell overboard into the rough seas -- a young man by the name of Luke. For hours the brutal waves tossed him around, crashing over his head, his soggy life jacket barely keeping him afloat. As the storm subsided, his exhausted body washed up onto the shore of the island and he immediately fell asleep on the warm sand, lulled by the soft croons of the forest.

When he awoke some hours later, the biologist was met with an incredible sight. Sitting on his stomach was a tiny creature no larger than a kitten with long, fluffy ears and a squirrel-like tail. “Palu?” it squeaked curiously, its wide, brightly-colored eyes stared intently into his for a few seconds. Luke blinked, staring up at it. "Palu?" He repeated with a dazed look, still disoriented from the storm. The creature tilted its head at him, blinked once, then bolted, escaping into the thick brush that lined the beach.

By the time the boat arrived at the shoreline to retrieve their fallen comrade, Luke discovered quite a bit more about the creatures and had sketched their general design, which he quickly shared with the crew. Upon reaching maturity, they changed their appearance to suit their surroundings. The ones that lived near the volcano had fiery tips on their ears, their body color darkening to match the ash around them. The ones that lived in the lush forests adapted their tails and the tips of their ears into leaves, a camouflage from predators. The last type he had discovered, the ones that swam in the clear waters of the river, had a dolphin like tail and a webbed fin. He called them the Palui, after the sound "Palu" they seemed to make. There were many other types, he hypothesized and so he decided to stay on the island and continue his research. Meanwhile, the ship returned to the mainland, and the sketches reached many eyes, piquing much interest in these new, cute creatures.

Four years later people are starting to migrate to the island, as well as tame the Palui as pets. The natives often hand out little bundles with a Palui inside – welcoming presents for those coming to their new homes.

Important Places on Palu Island

Mt. Manu :: Mt. Manu is Palu Island's active volcano. It has an unpredictable behavior and it may go for years without erupting, or only a day between eruptions. Due to prevailing winds from the west, the fallout tends to blow away from the majority of the island.

Mt. Kapu :: Mt. Kapu is south of Mt. Manu. Its snow-capped peak is the highest point on Palu Island. The river at its base is fed in part by a very special spring called Hokepi Spring, which produces the purest water on the island.

Mt. Ouli :: Mt. Ouli is Palu Island's second-tallest mountain, and is furthest to the South. In this area, ball lightning is a common naturally-occurring phenomenon.

Human Settlement :: Located on the bay on the eastern side of the island, the human settlement was originally a research station set up by Luke to study the Palui. It is now a bustling harbor town. As new ships arrive every day, its population grows and its borders expand.

Theme of the Palui

About The Palui - Luke's Report
(aka tl;dr)

Palui are inhabitants of the Island of Palu, a rather small and isolated island somewhere in the Pacific. Similar to the Galapagos in its degree of isolation, Palu Island plays host to a number of rare and fantastical creatures including the Palui. Some time in the Palui's evolutionary history it became beneficial for the creatures to adapt to differing environments on Palu very quickly-- from a few generations to within a generation.

Today Palui can adapt almost instantaneously when they experience a strong indicator from their environment. If Mt. Manu erupts, it is not unusual for there to be a sudden upsurge in the number of Fire Palui, which are specially suited to handling high temperatures and volcanic conditions. If there is a very cold season that produces snow and ice across the island, Ice Palui tend to become most prevalent, and so on and so forth.

All Palui, no matter what their alignment, breed true to produce Neutral kittens. Neutral offspring with the ability to attune have the best chances at survival. In the wild, even aligned Palui can change what element they are attuned to, but as the Palui ages it is harder for them to alter their state. It is common for a Palui to remain in one alignment for its entire life, and change only once at the most.

In the wild, Palui are sociable creatures that like to live in small groups called coalitions, though loner Palui are by no means rare or unheard of. The habits of Palui within each coalition tend to differ from coalition to coalition. Coalitions can be comprised of a breeding pair and their children, a group of siblings, or even Palui that are not closely related that have simply come together to keep a territory. Palui tend to stay where they were born and it is unusual for them to travel much further than their home unless it is absolutely necessary.

It can take many months for a Palui to attune itself if there is no particularly strong influence from its environment. Before a Palui has become attuned it is small and relatively weak by comparison to any of the attuned varieties. Neutral Palui rely on strength in numbers to pass this middle stage of life. Once they have attuned, coalitions may break apart and new coalitions may form, or a matured Palui may choose to move off on its own.

Palui are omnivores, although their most preferred meal is fresh fruit of any variety, leafy green vegetables, and the occasional insect or fish. They are capable of digesting red meat, but Palui do not typically hunt or scavenge. The Palui is an opportunistic creature that can subsist on nearly anything organic to survive. They are not, however, the apex predators of Palu Island. The seabirds called Ingi have been known to kill young Palui living on the eastern side of the island. Palui in the rainforest have packs of wild canids to deal with, and danger lurks in the rivers.

Mortality of young Palui in the wild is unusually high, given their unique adaptability. Neutral Palui mothers can easily care for two young at a time, but for some reason numbers beyond that put strain on a mother Palui and she may prematurely leave some of her kittens on their own. Attuned Palui have better luck with larger litters, and their kittens tend to attune more quickly to the most influential element in their environment. With predation and over-feeding by Palui in some areas, the Palui population still has a pretty high cap and Palui are very abundant.

Palui vocalizations consist of variations on the word "Palu". A happy Palui vocalizes often and in a sing-song tone ("Palupalupalupalu~!" ). A content Palui will purr ("Parurururu" ), while a confused one will squeak ("Palu?" ). Palui will indicate their reticence ("Paluuuu..." ) and their eagerness ("Palu palui!" ). One can usually interpret what a Palui is trying to impart by listening to its tone of voice and looking at its body language.

Palui make excellent companions and pets. While obviously incapable of human speech, they are as intelligent as small children and can grasp complicated concepts with time and patience. Palui with human caretakers tend to be more independent than the average Palui, and behave rather similarly to cats. If permitted to, they will roam far and wide, and can be found napping in a sunny spot. A particularly sociable Palui will treat its handler as a member of its coalition and will protect them fiercely from harm. Personalities will vary from individual to individual. Due to their sensitivity to their environment, they are also very empathic and can sense when something is wrong. When their caretaker is sad they are wont to curl up with them and try to comfort them.

Palui kept in human habitations do not attune to an element naturally. Once they have reached maturity, they remain a Neutral Palui for their entire lives (or at least one assumes, since the eldest mature Palui kept in a human home has not attuned in the past four years). It is, however, possible to attune a domesticated Palui with the use of concentrated doses of a particular element. Thus far such exposure has not proved harmful to the Palui. A recently-attuned Palui's behavior may be a little erratic or different from how it acted as a Neutral Palui. Sometimes a Palui's personality will change completely, but most of the time a Palui's behavior will return to normal after a few days.

Bundle
The natives have given you this strange bundle. Take care of it!

Newborn
This adorable kitten-like creature was inside the bundle. Awww!
Its eyes are barely open and when you hold it in your arms it croons
contentedly. At this stage, the Palui is too young to fend for itself but
likes to play a lot.

Adult - Outer Circle
Your Palui has matured into a lovely adult. It is old enough to take
care of itself but if you have treated it well it will stick around.

Palui in the wild tend to take on the
characteristics of the element they are most often exposed to,
transforming into stronger, larger, hardier creatures, but it's not
unheard of for them to take on no element, and remain neutral
Palui for their lifespan.

COMMON TYPES

Neutral Palui
The most common type of Palui, a smaller adult form that is very
popular among islanders as pets. A playful, kitten-like type.

Fire Palui
The fire Palui is a very hardy creature. It has a high core body temperature
that helps it to withstand great levels of heat, especially around volcanos.
Its fur is fireproof. If the flames on the tips of its ears go out, it will get very sick.

Water Palui
The water Palui has slick, waterproof fur and an aquadynamic, slender build.
Its fins help it to steer underwater, and its fluked tail allows it to travel at great
speed. It requires oxygen to breathe, but can stay submerged for hours at a
time if need be.

Earth Palui
The earth Palui has wiry, strong fur that resists dirt and grime. Its tail and
eartips are specially adapted to look like plants. In fact, they can perform
photosynthesis and give the Palui an extra boost of energy. Earth Palui are very
fragrant and gentle. Their presence is purported to help plants grow.

UNCOMMON TYPES

Ice Palui
The Ice Palui has a very low core temperature and its blood has a special
chemical within it that acts as antifreeze. Ice accumulates on its body as water
freezes on the surface of its fur. It can survive temperatures down to absolute
zero and requires very little food to live. An Ice Palui likes to sleep in snow and
will often create a bed of snow around itself that will not melt until it leaves.

Electric Palui
The electric Palui constantly generates an electric field around it. If you touch it,
you might feel a shock from built up static energy. It has no reason to feel fear
during an electrical storm as its body can withstand extremely high voltages.
Electric Palui can generate ball lightning and with some practice get the orbs
to float around where they want them to.

Air Palui
The air Palui's large wings allow it to fly. It has no other special abilities, but it
has an extra fluffy coat to prevent it from freezing at high altitudes. Air Palui can
fly for many miles, but obviously not far enough to find other islands around Palu
Island. They are so uncommon in the wild that no one is sure of their full capabilities.

RARE TYPES

Dark Palui
The dark Palui is very mysterious. It is surrounded by an aura of dark energy and can
see extremely well in the darkness. These are so rare that their abilities are unknown.

Light Palui
The light Palui is three-tailed and some claim it possesses magical abilities.
No one really knows much about them, though.

BRIBES
Information
Missed out on getting a custom slot? Want a Palui anyway? Then bribing may be the way to go. Bribing a colorist means that you are asking them to take on more work than their monthly quota, so you may have to offer a lot to get them to accept. Check the custom prices first to see what you should be offering. It is the colorist's choice on whether or not to accept a bribe.

Process
1. PM the colorist with what you want and your offer.
2. Wait for the colorist to accept or decline your offer.
3. If accepted, PM them the custom form and send them a trade for the full amount of your bribe.
