Story:

Aurrie Beaues

“In the beginning, there was nothingness. There was no earth, only vast amounts of water. No fish even swam there.”

A soft, raspy voice sliced through the thick folds of darkness that enveloped the innards of the hovel. The owner, an aging gryphon marked with paints and scars, peered down at the young charges at her paws. They were the future. They needed to hear the words passed from beak to beak since the beginning of time.

“Sky Mother slept peacefully in the clouds above and none bothered her, because there was no one to bother her. Time passed quickly, and with it she became lonely. She fell from the clouds on swift, strong wings and flew over the water. With each flap, dirt rose and land formed. She made the mountains, our homes, by offering feathers to the dirt, which swallowed them up and grew higher and higher. They hardened, giving us a place to roost. She made the plains smooth, perfect for hunting.”

Her eyesight was not what it once was, but she could still see each and every young gryphon she was sitting for. This group was quite small, as only a few females inhabited this little patch of territory and fewer still had young that needed watching while during the day’s hunt. Most of the young gryphons were attentive during this particular history lesson, while two mischievous little ones were batting at each other’s tails.

The old female chuckled softly to herself before moving on.

“Once the land was made and was sturdy for walking, Sky Mother touched down and scratched the dirt with her claws. She piled it up big and it became Earth Mother, who helped her accomplish many things. Sky Mother and Earth Mother traveled far and wide and with each pawstep, life emerged from the rich soil. Trees grew tall and grass sprouted. Bushes emerged and were dotted with little berries.

And as they went, they spoke. They spoke softly and in a tongue much slower and far superior to our own as they planned the things that would live here. First they made the little ant, followed by the hungry rat, soon came the noble deer and the laughing coyote. There was the rabbit and the wolf, the eagle and the groundhog, the snake and the vulture. All sorts of creatures, big and small, were given the blessings of life.”

The tale must have been growing more interesting, because the two rambunctious offspring had stopped their shenanigans and were watching the old female.

“Dinna’ they make us?” One asked anxiously. It was not the first time they had heard this story, but they feared being left out. It would be rotten luck if the Sky Mother forgot her followers.

“”Flies ‘f brains, o’ course! Momma says they maked us’unz last for ‘cos y‘ always save the best fer last!” One of the more fidgety little ones replied before the elder could respond.

“Yes, yes, Sky Mother and Earth Mother did wait until last to create us.” She chuckled at the eager youngsters and gave each of the two a nod before she began once more.

“You see, Sky Mother wanted the perfect blend of the majestic birds of the sky, while Earth Mother wanted the power and prowess of the feline warriors of her lands. We, as you can see, are the end result. Sky Mother and Earth Mother molded us from the stone of the mountain. Sky Mother gave us our powerful wings and beaks, not to mention the ability to fly, while Earth Mother gave us our strong paws and powerful claws....

We live in the shadow of Sky Mother, forever in debt and forever cherishing, because it is she who made us what we are.” There was a deep rumble in the throat of the female gryphon as she stood and nuzzled each of the youngsters with her beak.

“Up, now. It is getting late. Your mothers should be back, soon, and hopefully with full beaks.” As she padded towards the entrance to the hovel, little curious voices followed her.

“Y’ain’ gonna tell us another story?”

“Yeah! Another!”

“W’about th’ one wi’ th’ moon’n stars?”

“Or the one ‘bout the forest?”

“Yeah! About th’ forest!”

“No, no. Not right now. Your mothers would be furious at me for giving you nightmares.” She scolded and nudged the youngster closest to her. “That is for another day, another time, as it is another tale. If I tell you now, you won’t sleep at all tonight.”

Disappointed grunts and sighs greeted the soft, warm night as the charges where led out to their mothers, who would take them to their own hovels. The next day the sun would rise on the mountains to reveal both the small groups that had formed over time and the individuals that chose to live alone and wander where they pleased.

The Plains: The inlands of Averon are covered by vast, long-grass plains. This is where the Gryphons do most of their hunting, taking deer and other large game species.

The Mountains: Bordering the grasslands along the west edge, this is where the gryphons go to roost, as well as breed and raise their young. Each Gryphon claims an aerie for themselves, while mating pairs usually share the female's. The same nesting sites are used for each breeding.

The Forest: Forested patches of various sizes are scattered throughout the lands, with the largest being a massive coniferous woods to the north and east. Little is known about this place, as the Gryphons rarely venture very far in, and usually only tarry on the verge for shade when the sun's heat is particularly fierce.

The Gryphons:

Gryphons are pony sized hunters of the open plains. Their bodies are a strange mix of big cat, and bird of prey. Their bodies resemble that of a panther, and are stocky and low-slung. They possess the broad wings and beaked head of a raptor. The tail consists of two parts: A long, thick cat tail, as well as broad, feathered tail which assists in maneuvering in flight. The coat is dense and woolly, yet surprisingly light.

Lifestyle: Usually solitary and nomadic. Females are more likely to be found in small groups that stick to a smaller territory.

Diet: Gryphons are purely carnivorous, and prefer to hunt large game, though they will take small prey as well as fish.

1. Flat Sales will either be held as speed or flaffles. Occasionally there may be a prompt sale.
2. Speed sales are first come, first serve.
3. You may only buy one pet per sale.
4. Proxying is allowed, however, if you proxy for someone, you may not try for one for yourself.
5. Flat sale pets cost a minimum of 4k each. Trades must be confirmed within 48 hours or your pet will be revoked and resold.
6. Editing posts during speed sales or trivia is not allowed.
7. All trades should be sent directly to the colorist. Mule hopping is annoying...XP

I will accept pet trade offers for shops that don't require RP'ing, and have a healthy amount of owners that refuse to breed with nonRP'ers. SoA is the exception, since I love the hell out of that shop, even though I never RP there. SoA critters = automatic yes. (Offers from shop colorists only).

For now, breedings will always be OPEN to those that meet the below requirements. To breed, just send a PM with the parents to be along with a trade for the breeding fee if slots are open. If all slots are filled, you must wait until one clears to claim a breeding.
