As for the facebook thing, you could always reject friend requests? I tend to do that with the people I really didn't like in school or simply didn't care about. To be honest I don't like all my old school acquaintances knowing what I'm doing every second of the day - no telling who it'll get back to, but I like to keep in touch with all my other buddies.
