To our esteemed customer base:
There is an unfortunate dilemma we are currently facing at AtWoP: and that is this.
The impressing you have just participated in, and hatchings like it. Are. Not. Customs.
We do have chances to custom a dragon, down to the last detail of what you want, but we will announce these when they occur, and will handle them at that time.
Regular Hatchlings are an entirely different animal: They are handled by selecting characters that we believe are of high quality and high potential, and are paired with ALREADY CREATED Hatchlings with ALREADY ESTABLISHED personalities. This was announced on several occasions before the Hatching occurred. Those who participate in these Hatchings need to understand that they are doing so with the chance that what we think is a good match for the candidate is not necessarily what they themselves would pick.
This can be challenging, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You have just received a dragon into which days of work was put, for 5k gold, and if you choose to participate in this, we expect you to accept what you have gambled for, and we have worked hard to make and pair you with. If you turn down, or attempt to “re-write” one of these hatchlings, you are, flatly, on the black list. By the same token: Please do not ‘hint’ at the kind of color you want. The more you hint, the more recalcitrant we become to give you that color, because again, these are not customs. If you absolutely MUST have an exact color and an exact personality of dragon, then you will simply HAVE to wait for an actual custom slot to open, and then, with luck, you will have exactly what you want. Because of the nature of the regular Hatchlings we will not tolerate people trying to treat them as ‘cop out customs’, because this is exceedingly unfair to those individuals who have spent so much time trying to create them to begin with.
-Ryugen, on behalf of, and with the approval of the ATWOP staff-

_GENERAL RULES_
1. Obey Gaia ToS.
2. Respect everyone in the thread. Save the drama fo' yo' momma, and also PMs.
3. Do not beg, whine, or generally be a nuisance.
4. You're free to join in if you haven't read the books, but please read the introductory
information in the guild and try to familizarize yourself with the setting before submitting a character.
5. Do not PM the mule, or any staff member, unless you are given prior permission.
_ROLEPLAYING RULES_
1. Do not godmod, powerplay, et cetera.
2. ALL characters must be approved before being roleplayed in the guild.
3. You may not roleplay as a dragonrider unless your character Impresses during a
Hatching, or you custom an adult dragon and rider. You may, however, roleplay a non-rider
character so long as they have been submitted and approved in the guild.
4. Please read all of the information in the guild and the storyline before roleplaying.
It'll save you and us a lot of headaches.
5. We strongly discourage Mary Sues/Gary Stus.
6. If you obtain a gold or a bronze dragon, we ask you do roleplay, especially if you have a queen. Any high ranking queenriders that disappear from thread/rp for a period of time designated by staff will be removed from their position and sent to an NPC weyr until they return. Same applies to Lord Holders, Masterharper, etc -- if left unactive the character will be stripped of it's rank. Bronzeriders are less strict, however, if they are in a wingleader position, that position will be revoked and the rider and dragon sent to an NPC weyr, were they may return from, should the rper wish to come back. Upon return, none of these characters may resume their position unless valid reason is given and AtWoP staff agrees. If they would like to resume any high-ranking position, they must once again earn that right.****
In short, this means some high-ranked positions ARE rp required, however, dragons themselves aren't.
(Rule 6 is subject to change)
7. NO PERNESE DRAGON WILL KILL A HUMAN BEING. EVER. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. IT. DOES. NOT. HAPPEN.
8. Dragons may never be rehomed by anyone except AtWoP staff.
**** This rule only applies under circumstances deemed necessary by AtWoP staff. Several warnings will be issued before this happens.
_FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS_
Is this canon or non-canon?
This will be a loose canon roleplay set in an alternate 10th-Pass Pern.
Loose canon means that colors can Impress to individuals they wouldn't usually Impress to,
dragons may appear in ratios not seen in the books, and other issues will be more flexible
to make for more interesting roleplay.
What about AIVAS?
We are assuming a sans-AIVAS Pern. It was either never found, or was nonfunctional when it was found.
Since you have custom events: Are we allowed to try and custom cosplays of dragons from the books?
No. There will be no cosplays of book dragons, or mutant colors (or mutant dragons) allowed. This includes white. Although pale shades are allowed on the dragons, if it's close enough to white to be mistaken for white, it's probably too close.
On which note: As part of shop Canon: Ruth was never hatched, leaving no precedent at all for mutant dragons.
I read on a fan web-site that Pern has -insert animal/plant/technology here-, but you guys say there's not. Why?
-Because many of the fan sites include things that aren't actually mentioned in the book, and even some of the guides compiled by McCaffery's staff also do, we're making calls on Canon based on what we have access to in the actual books. We realize that some of you may prefer the 'fan' version of things, but you're going to have to bear with us on this one. Sorry.

Rukbat, in the Saggitarian sector, was a golden G-type star. It had five planets, and one stray it had attracted and held in recent millenia. Man colonized the third planet and named it Pern...
It has been nearly 200 Turns since the momentous conclusion of the 9th Pass of the Red Star. The Pernese have reclaimed the bountiful Southern Continent, and with the discovery of Landing and their extra-Rukbatian origins, the progress of technology and reclaiming of knowledge that had begun at the end of the Interval was kicked into overdrive. Although AIVAS was destroyed beyond repair when its chamber was discovered, numerous other discoveries on that site and many others across the long-abandoned continent paved the way for technological growth and development. Advances in the fields of nearly every Craft have improved longevity and quality of life for many Pernese. However, as the Red Star swings ever closer, Pern and her inhabitants face their greatest peril yet again. But the dragonriders, their noble defenders, face more domestic problems of their own.
Overcrowding has become a problem in many Weyrs, as Queens lay generously to prepare the planet's fighting force. Perhaps the most dangerously overcrowded of the Weyrs is Ista. The curiously constructed Weyr is located on a large island between the Northern and Southern continents. Its half-volcano, formed by a violent eruption that knocked the bay half of its caldera into the sea, can comfortably fit 250 dragonrider pairs. Needless to say, it is the smallest Weyr on Pern in both size and numbers. But, in these cramped times, a staggering 375 pairs call Ista Weyr home. All of the stone-cut weyrs are currently housing two dragonriders along with their lifemates, while hundreds of makeshift “forest weyrs” have had to be hastily constructed on the outer face of the Bowl.
To make matters even worse, there are two clutches currently hardening on Ista’s sands. In an awful twist of events, both the senior and one of the junior golds rose within a sevenday of one another- and, being at the beginning of a pass, both clutches are upwards of 20 eggs! With a surplus of forty-some odd dragonets about to bombard the Weyr, both Sr. Weyrwoman Helirra and Weyrleader D’tai have been spending many a sleepless night trying to devise a plan of how to relieve their increasingly cramped Weyr. They can’t send their riders to any of Pern’s other Weyrs; they, too, are facing overcrowding-- though not nearly as badly as Ista.
Many of the Wingleaders, along with the youngest of the goldriders, Favan, have been gathering to discuss options. They strongly believe that a new Weyr should be opened. Some of the Wingleaders have even gone so far as to send their Wings out scouting for locations. The favored location is a secluded crater located in the depths of the Southern Continent, west of the Great Bay. Favan has her own reasons for pushing the opening of a new Weyr. Her own queen, Cheoth, has been growing brighter with each passing day. If a new Weyr were opened, Favan could become a Senior Weyrwoman and have her own Weyr to run! With lust for power and control pushing her, Favan is prepared to just about anything to convince Helirra and D’tai that a new Weyr is the only way to solve her problems, and with a hefty majority of the Weyr’s residents in accordance with her, how could they disagree?

_DRACONIC RANKS/COLORS_

_DRACONIC GROWTH_
All dragons begin as eggs, laid by a Queen dragon. After they have hardened on the Hatching
Sands for many sevendays, they hatch into dragonets-- gangly, big-headed, limp-winged
facades of the graceful adults they will become. They immediately Impress upon a human
candidate, forging the lifelong bond between dragon and rider.
As the dragonet grows and matures, it becomes a weyrling. This period of the dragon's life is
arguably the most important, as the bond between human and dragon is in its most formative
period, along with its body. Improper care of the dragon at this stage is very dangerous.
Finally, a dragonet reaches adulthood at around 18 months, when it attains its full size and its
mind is fully matured. Dragon and rider have endured the trials of Weyrlinghood together and
their bond is stronger than ever. They are trained and prepared to face Thread and anything
else thrown at them. But some are better prepared than others.
_DRAGON EYES_
It is easy to gauge a dragon's mood or state of mind by looking at the color of its eyes. Dragon
eyes are very large, have three sets of lids, and are multi-faceted. They appear to swirl with
different colors, and each color indicates a different mood. A rough color-code is laid out below:
Blue/Green = Contentment
Yellow = Fear
Reddish Yellow = Battle
Red/Orange = Anger
Red = Hunger
Purple = Mating Lust
White = Danger
Grey = Pain
_TELEPATHY, MENTAL POWERS, AND TELEPORTATION_
While dragons do vocalize, in bellows, trumpeting, crooning, keening, and so forth, their main
mode of communicating with their rider and other dragons is telepathy. They usually dislike
speaking to anyone but their riders or other dragons, though they will communicate with people
that they regard very highly-- but this is extremely rare. They can communicate with firelizards
and watchwhers, though have a strong distaste for the latter, and have the ability to tell what is
wrong with animals.
For all that they are mentally gifted, they have notoriously short memories. Even in their prime,
dragons have a maximum recall period of 2-3 days. They have a difficult time remembering
other riders' names and often will recall them incorrectly (which contributed to the fact that
riders' name are now shortened when they Impress).
Dragons are capable of teleporting in a process called "going between". First the dragon
must have a clear mental image of the place that they want to go, usually provided by the rider,
but it can be provided by another dragon. Then they concentrate and 'wink out', disappearing
from view and entering a frigid, lightless void of nothingness. This is between. There is
nothing between, not even air. Luckily it only takes as long as coughing three times to
re-emerge in normal timespace wherever the prescribed mental image was.
It is possible not only to travel between places, but also to time travel using this process.
However, it is very dangerous to travel between times. The knowledge of 'timing it' is
reserved to gold and bronze riders and the few people that achieve it by accident. It is strictly
forbidden to practice due to the risk involved.
Travelling particularly long distances in time or space can cause the duration of time spent
between to lengthen.

Firelizards, or Flitts, are the tiny native Pernese creatures whose genetic material was
used to create the dragons themselves. They are structured exactly the same way as their much
larger cousins, coming in the same varieties of rank and color, with size and intelligence based on
color. However, green firelizards, unlike green dragons, are fertile. Gold firelizards are about as long as a
man's arm, with each subsequent color smaller by degrees.
Gold firelizards may be as smart as a domestic cat, and they are the most intelligent of the colors.
They Impress just like dragons do, but without sexual preference or gender discrimination-- golds
may Impress to males, bronzes to females, etc. Firelizards imprint on the first person that feeds
and cares for them. They are incapable of mental "speech" but often communicate using broadcasted
mental images that they will share with their owner and others.
Firelizards make charming, attractive pets and are highly sought-after. After a long time in which
they were rare and found only in the wild on the Northern Continent, firelizards have made a huge
comeback. Owning a firelizard is a sign of rank and status, and it is rare for an land-bred
commoner to own one. In spite of their present prevalence they are still expensive pets to obtain
and own.
Southerners or Seahold-bred people are more likely to encounter or own a firelizard, as
firelizards bury their clutches on sandy, protected beaches. Golds will fiercely defend their
eggs, whereas a green is more likely to forget that she laid eggs and much of the clutch
(comprised mostly of green lizards) will be decimated by predators.

_PLACES & PEOPLE OF INTEREST_
_ISTA ISLAND_

ISTA WEYR
Located on the small island south of the main body of the Northern Continent, Ista is the smallest
of the original Northern Weyrs. It is suffering from the worst of the Weyrwide overcrowding.
Traditionally, older riders and dragons would retire to Ista, as the climate is comfortable for those
suffering the symptoms of the aging and elderly.
Weyrleaders: Weyrwoman Helirra and Weyrleader D'tai

ISTA HOLD
Ista Hold is comprised of the whole of the same island that Ista Weyr is found upon.
It has a temperate climate with low humidity, and part of the territory is desert. Ista is
overseen by a Lord Holder and his Lady, and is one of the major Holds of Pern.

_HATCHING SALES_
PRICE
5K per dragon
PROCEDURE
Hatchings at AtWoP function the way RP flatsales work at other shops. First you must have
submitted a candidate character for approval. Roleplaying the candidacy is not required, but if
there are RPs for us to look back on to get a better grip on the character, they are more likely
to be matched to the most appropriate dragon/color.
Each Hatching will have a certain number of eggs with preset dragons inside of each. Color,
name and personality will already be decided-- but you will be allowed to decide how to
honorize your male candidate's name (female greenriders may also honorize their names,
goldriders NEVER do). There will be a prompt you have to answer to the best of your ability.
We will then choose which candidate gets what egg and write a post detailing every
Impression. Read through to see if your candidate Impressed, then roleplay the Impression
etc. Payment is due in 24 hours or the dragonet will be reImpressed.
RULES
1. No whining if you don't get a dragon/don't get the color you wanted.
2. Please try to write clearly, with good grammar and spelling.
3. No editing of posts!!
_WHAT IS A HATCHING?_
A Hatching is a Weyr event during which young dragonets hatch out of their eggs and
Impress upon the youths presented as candidates. They are exciting and emotional occurrences.
Depending on the number of Queens in a Weyr, a Hatching may occur once a Turn or once
every other Turn. Right before or during a Pass, gold dragons rise more often and lay more
eggs. First a Queen dragon rises to mate with a bronze or (rarely) a brown dragon. At least a
dozen but occassionally upwards of forty or more eggs develop inside of the gold dragon. She
lays after a number of sevendays during which she feeds voraciously.
Eggs are laid on the Hatching Sands, an expanse of superheated sands surrounded by stone
stands hewn into the walls of the arena where dragonriders and non-Weyrfolk visitors may sit to
watch a Hatching. The gold dragon may take a few days to lay an entire clutch. Then she will
brood over the eggs, guarding them from any and all intruders, including other dragons. Eggs
are initially very soft and leathery to the touch, not that the Queen lets anyone but her rider
close enough to find out at this stage. She is very touchy and moody during this period, and
will often turn and move the eggs around.
Most eggs are mottled in appearance. The colors on the egg do not hint at the color of the
dragonet inside. Even size can be misleading, although it is sport among dragonriders and
Weyrfolk to bet on what color dragon each egg contains. Only one egg leaves no doubt as to
what color it contains: a Queen egg. Queen eggs are golden in color and markedly larger than
all of the other eggs. If a clutch contains a Queen egg, the gold will isolate it on a raised dais
and guard it even more ferociously than the other eggs.
After many sevendays of hardening and maturing on the sands, the eggs are ready to hatch.
During the maturation of the eggs, candidates are Searched from the various surrounding Holds
and Crafthalls beholden to the Weyr, as well as the Lower Caverns of the Weyr itself. They are
put to hard work to earn their place on the Hatching Sands, and are occassionally allowed to
touch the eggs so that there is no fear or doubt on Hatching Day. Candidates tend to be
between 13-21 Turns old. Seeing candidates at an age at either extreme is uncommon, and
generally candidates in their later teens are preferred.
When the eggs begin to Hatch, all of the dragons in the Weyr begin to hum at a very low
frequency-- so low that the stone of the Weyr itself vibrates. The candidates put on their plain
white robes and are flown into the Hatching Sands on the backs of dragons. Families of the
candidates, important people, Weyrfolk, and all the dragons and their riders of the Weyr fill the
stands to watch the Hatching.
The candidates are left barefoot on the scorching sands to face the eggs. As each egg
hatches, the dragons' humming reaches a crescendo. The Queen, held under tense control by
her rider, watches as dragonets emerge from their eggs. They are gangly, clumsy creatures,
voraciously hungry after their long time spent inside of their eggs. They have teeth and talons
and in their agitated confusion, are dangerous until they Impress. The candidates are left to
their own devices while each dragon makes its choice.
Impression itself is an experience that no dragonrider ever forgets. It is nearly indescribable.
The dragons' eyes meet a candidate's, and suddenly a mental link is formed. The dragon
speaks into their chosen candidate's mind, telling them their name and that they are very
hungry. Suddenly both dragon and rider are inseparably tied to one another. Emotions are so
strong that some candidates even burst into tears. Impression, it is said, is like finding that
other half of yourself that you never knew you were missing, but without which you were
incomplete. Watching the experience is emotional as well, and even non-Weyrfolk often find
the experience deeply moving.
Some dragonets do not find a candidate that they want on the sands and teleports between
to die, but this has become a very rare occurence. Usually there are enough candidates
presented for Impression that each dragonet has plenty of choice.
For candidates that don't Impress, they are free to continue trying until they Turn 21 and remain
at the Weyr, or to return home. Failed male candidates with no Craft or special training might
be sent home regardless.

_DRAGON BREEDING_
This will probably not be an issue until there are many gold dragons. In order to have
a condoned mating flight, all eligible golds (ones that are old enough, that have enough time
between their last flight and this one, etc) can apply for a mating flight. The slots will be rolled
or otherwise chosen, and the winners may hold a mating flight. The number of eggs will be
randomized, taking into account the length of the flight, the color of the successful male, and a
few other factors. Then the colors of each dragonet will be randomized, with a slim chance of a
Queen egg being contained in the cluch.
Once the laying has been roleplayed, there will be a brief time for people to create candidates or
have candidates Searched, as well as for them to RP. Then a Hatching will occur. It will be run
by staff, though the gold and bronze/browns' players are of course free to participate.
Green dragons will not produce clutches when they fly to mate. Thus they will not need to apply
in order to hold a mating flight. Two or three may even happen at the same time, so long as the
guild doesn't become overrun with them!
There is no breeding fee.
_FIRELIZARD BREEDING_
Firelizard breeding will be handled similarly to dragon breeding, but much more laxly. If
you want your firelizard to rise to mate and not have a PC clutch (assume that the lizard
abandoned it or something), you are free to do so. If you want the firelizard to cluch, you will
have to apply for a breeding slot.
Gold firelizards will lay anywhere from 6-10 eggs, with a chance at a Gold egg if the male was a
bronze. The owner of the firelizards may only keep one egg each; the others must be given
away.
Green firelizards will lay anywhere from 2-5 eggs and they will mostly be greens. The owner of the
firelizards may only keep one egg each; the others must be given away.
The breeding fee is 5K.
_RULES_
1. Please keep ALL mating-flight-related roleplay PG-13 in the guild.
2. You may choose to run a mating flight however you want, but if there is a dispute,
staff can resolve it for you.
3. No whining or complaining if you aren't rolled to have a clutch.
There will be plenty of chances.
4. Just because two dragons mate, does not mean that their riders are weyrmates.
They don't even have to like each other.

RANKS OF PERN
Thanks to Skies of Pern and Sabria's Guide to Pern
WEYR RANKS
The Weyrwoman is more than the woman who rides the senior queen. Along with leading the queens wing she takes care of keeping track of tithing trains and Weyr Population. It is her duty to see that a position open in the Weyr is filled. She also oversees the headwoman, the running of the lower caverns and Handles the crafters of the Weyr. The Weyrwoman listens to and handles non-rider complaints and disputes, plans for gatherings and hatchings, and makes sure that everyone knows what they are to do when a hatching occurs. The Weyrwoman also acts as a Public Relations and sees to it that all guests feel comfortbale and all ranking guests feel important. She also holds within her power to order any dragon within the Weyr which is an ability no one can overturn. She is a powerful figure in her own right. The only person in the entire Weyr that possesses the ability to demand and obtain complete and total abeyance of the riders that look to her for guidance.
Weyrleader
There are many duties that a Weyrleader carries out, mainly focusing on overseeing the fighting Wings and traditionally the fighting of Thread. The Weyrleader appoints the Wingleaders, the Weyrsecond and the Weyrlingmaster, though he keeps an eye on the Weyrlings to ensure that they are all being trained properly. Regular Wing reports from the Wingleader enables him to know how the Wings are faring. The Weyrleader is responsible for making sure that the dragons in the Weyr are cared for and that they are all functioning at an optimal level. Through his Wingleaders he ensures that the Riders are fully prepared for their duties. Additionally, the Weyrleader must make sure that all Holds and Crats in his sweep area are keeping the area free of vegitation.
Wingleader
Wingleaders are, in many ways, the Weyrleader's wing-representatives. Their job is to oversee and coordinate the riders placed in his or her wing. Wingleaders must oversee drills and keep a firm eye on his riders and dragons to make sure they are fit for their duties. Often, brown or bronze riders serve as Wingleaders, because it is beneficial to the wing for their Wingleader to be available throughout the whole fall. Wingleaders also have the job of selecting and training riders from the weyrling ranks in order to add them to their Wing. It is expected that Wingleaders will maintain a high level of discipline in their wings, on both personal and military levels. Reports on Sweeps, and other Wing related matters, are discussed with the Weyrleader in regular meetings. This includes hide work sent to the Weyrleader every sevenday to report on the health and readiness of the wing.
Wingsecond
While Wingleaders are, in many ways, the Weyrleader's wing-representatives, Wingseconds are as invaluable to their Wingleader as the Weyrsecond is to the Weyrleader. Wingseconds are also involved when overseeing drills and the overall health of their riders and dragons. The riders themselves are accountable to the Wingleader, though the Wingsecond is often the first line of defense and management in the chain of command. A Wingsecond reports to the Wingleader with all things. This is most common in wings led by blue and greenriders, due to the stamina of their dragons. They must also work with the Wingleader when selecting and training Weyrlings for their Wing.
Dragonhealer
Typically nondragonriders, but can also be dragonriders themselves, these healers specialize in thread injuries. Manned by the head Dragonhealer, dragonhealers must constantly prepare fellis for wounds, and be ready to apply bandages to wounded dragons. It is also thier responsibility to make sure that a dragon does fight thread until it is ready to do so.
Watchrider
In order to keep on top of thread, dragonriders are positioned at all holds of a Weyr's influence to keep watch for thread, and be able to carry messages in case of an Emergency. This rank is switched frequently, to give riders ample time at the Weyr and at the Hold.
Weyrsinger
Not an official rank, but this is typically a harper representative who impressed, and continues to play music. Usually they are the ambassadors to the craft halls, and must be very well trained in Weyr Etiquette.
Wingrider
Sweeps or patrols are part of a Dragonrider's duties. Not only does it provide a duty for the Wings and individual pairs outside of Threadfall, but also it provides a Weyr presence to be seen at Hold and CraftHall. By doing this, the Weyr is able to inspect the Holds and Crafthalls to ensure that they are doing their part to guard against Thread. Additionally, it provides a service for the Holder and a link between Hold and Weyr. All Threadfalls are normally predicted from Threadfall charts, though Riders out on sweeps keep a lookout as well.
Weyrlingmaster
Weyrlingmasters are the trainers of the Weyr, preparing new Riders for everything that they may come across during their Riding lifetimes. This encompasses anatomy, Wing Formations, Firestone chewing and many other things. They do not serve in any Wing, as there is inevitably always a class to be taught. The Weyrlingmaster reports to the Weyrleader, and keeps him updated as to the progress of his/her charges.
Candidatemaster
Oversees the training and prepreations of the Candidates. Many candidates who are new to hatchings have a tendency to be frightened by the hatching dragonets. This can cause injury tot he candidates and the dragonet alike if a candidate feels the need to flee. The Candidatemaster will make sure to warn the candidates of the dangers of this as well as what will be required of them during and before a hatching. He/she will also make sure to give the candidates their duties if they are npot studying a craft of some sort.
Weyrling
The newest riders in the weyr, the Weyrlings main concern is learning the ins and outs of dragonriding and caring for their lifemates. They supply the rest of the 'fighiting wings' with bags of firestone.
Candidate
Candidates are those who have been searched by a dragon and his/her dragon and brought to the Weyr. They can also be Weyrbrats whom have permission from the Weyrwoman to stand at the next hatching.
CRAFTHALL RANKS
Master
To those who are talented enough to go beyond, they may reach the rank of Master or Craftmaster, and they spend most of their time instructing others. Some of them may be elected as masters at a particular hall, where they ensure the smooth running of the hall. This is not to be confused with the rank Mastercraftsman, which denotes a man or woman who is the master of the entire craft and all of its halls. He (or she) is basically in charge of everything. There is only one Mastercraftsman, but there are multiple Masters in a craft. The youngest a Master can be is thirty. Masters are never Searched.
Journeyman/woman
Journeymen/women still receive instruction from the Masters, however they are allowed to travel (hence the name). They are frequently assigned posts in Holds where their abilities can be put to the test. Most people do not go beyond journeyman/woman rank in their craft, though they may achieve Sr. Journeyman/women if they prove themselves to be proficient. Journeymen/women may be as young as eighteen, and have no upper limit on their age. Those craftspeople holding this rank are rarely Searched by dragonriders.
Apprentice
The lowest rank in a Crafthall, apprentices tend to be children and teenagers. They can begin their training as early as eight or nine, but for most crafts they would probably accept apprentices around twelve to sixteen turns old. An apprenticeship lasts anywhere from 5-7 years, and during this time they are instructed by a Master from their craft. They do not earn a wage during this time, and at the end of their training they must pass an oral and a practical exam. Once they have passed both exams they "walk the tables" and become journeymen/women. Those craftspeople holding this rank may be Searched by dragonriders.
HOLD RANKS
Lord Holder
A man who is in charge of a Major Hold, whether because he has inherited the title from his father or has taken over the Hold by force. His responsibilities include keeping the residents safe from Thread, providing proper education by employing Harpers, and exchanging food and shelter in return for labour. The Lord is responsible for making sure that a percentage of the Hold's wealth is paid to the Weyrs as tithes.
Lady Holder
The wife of the Lord Holder. While her husband and the Steward manage the money affairs, the Lady Holder supervises the day-to-day running of the Hold, aided by the Headwoman and her female children/relatives.
Steward
The man in charge of a Hold's wealth. He is responsible for monitoring outside trade, Weyr tithes, and dealing with the payments from the Minor Holds.
Headwoman
The woman who is responsible for maintaining the day-to-day life of the Weyr. Food, clothing, healing, and the maintenance of dwellings are all under her jurisdiction.
Lordlings
Along with fosterlings and other male relatives, the sons of the Lord Holder are given an experience in Hold management. This can be anything from assisting the Steward to taking care of a particular aspect of the Hold (i.e. husbandry). They may even become Lords of a Minor Hold (see: Holder).
Holder
The man in charge of a Minor Hold. Like the Lord Holder, he is responsible for the Hold that he governed, but instead of paying tithes to the Weyr he pays tithes to a Major Hold instead. The Major Hold, in turn, pays the Weyrs to look out for the Minor Holds.
