I actually just read The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and it was really great. There is, somewhere on the internet, an Excel spreadsheet with the entire list and it counts how many you have read and tells you how many you will have to read a year in order to finish the list, based on your current age and the average life expectancy of your gender. Kind of cool. Last time I checked, I had read about 30 of them, and I am working on Brave New World right now.

To be honest though, I have rather set aside this list for the time being to work on the Guardian newspaper's list of 1000 must-read books. They have it split into categories and from what I have seen and read, I like the books on the Guardian list better. For those interested in this list, you can find it at http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/jan/23/bestbooks-fiction

Always love Agatha Christie. I've read all her works. 3nodding Shame they didn't put more of her on the list. mrgreen I have to say I live the Guardian list a lot as well. Definately going to read some of those.

UPDATE:

I'm just adding names to the list with participants as I see fit. Anyone doesn't agree, just post in the thread and I'll change it.

Added a few more books to my in-between reading list. I'm on a HP-binge, however... xp

EDIT: Another update. I also added the list from the Guardian, because it seems like a very good list. A little extra for those of us mad enough to tackle it.
Who decides why you must read these books before you die? Do they give a reason for it?

It's a team of critics from all over the world. I think about a hundred of them and together they've decided on this list. Some books are added because of their enduring impact on our culture, others because they're innovative.

10/1001

I'm so embarrassed, that's not very many! redface I have half of these books on my to read list already! I better get started.

I agree with (whoever said it), I found it annoying that several authors have ALL of their books on there while others only get one or two. I mean, Ernest Hemingway bores the hell out of me! But what about the rest of the Vampire Chronicles or the rest of the Hitchhikers Guide? More of Chuck Palahniuk's work? I read Fight Club, I thought that one had a rather big impact. Sheesh, there's plenty of authors that deserve to be on the list, but man, some of the authors just take up so much of this list.

Yeah, whilst digging through amazon and thinking about what to add next to my list of books waiting in shelves... XP I found a German version of the 1000 must-read books. I guess there are lots of other books in there that aren't in here and vice versa. I should maybe rather stick to their list, though. XD And they said they have another book for plays. O:

What others have mentioned already and also strikes me the most of this list is that some authors seem to have all their major works in there, yet there are many others who'd have deserved to be on the list but aren't or there are works which we consider inferior to their other stuff. And there are several books I have read that aren't in there even though the authors are, take Thomas Bernhard for example there are 6 of his works in there, if I remember that correctly but not the book I have read (which I think is indeed a must-read if you consider his other stuff must-reads or how much better must they be! XP) "Heldenplatz" is its German name. To be honest, I didn't expect him to be in there anyway.

All in all I'd be happy to read 250 of those. Haha. Sounds much but if I think about it... I'm only 20 (well almost, 2 weeks off haha XD) and have already read 40... ^_^" Plus most of the books have been read in the last 5-7 years. razz

I'm definately planning on reading all of them. I think that's about as many books as I've read in the rest of my life, so... sweatdrop

As said before, I do feel that the distribution of works and writers is a little unfair. There are quite a few writers who've got books on there that personally I would just take off. Two books per writer should be enough to get a sense of the writers.

Well, I don't really know if I will read all of them cause I don't think that all their topics appeal to me and I will only read what appeals. xp But maybe that'll change as well and make me read all. ^^"
I'll definitely have a look on the other list as well. ^^"

Oh and I updated my list cause in the last few weeks I've read some more books. biggrin
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - Robert Louis Stevenson, Watchmen - Alan Moore & David Gibbons, Thérèse Raquin - Emile Zola. biggrin
Now I've read 44 already. XP
I'll give the Guardian's list a try. XD

39/1000

Well, only 5 less. Though I think there were some works that consist of more than one book and I've only read one book from those "series" (or two) so I didn't count those.
I've read some of the Discworld series and of La Comédie humaine, to be precise. Maybe I should mark that. XD (La Comédie humaine consists of 137 works, so.... yeah... XD" Dunno how many are in the Discworld series. o_o)
I noticed that I marked much less books that I have... Maybe I'm tired maybe it's the list. lol I'm pretty positive I forgot some! D:

€: Edited cause I've read First Love by Turgenev. ^^ And I'm currently reading Love in the Time of Cholera by García Márquez. heart 40/1000
€²: July 16: Read Love in the Time of Cholera by García Marquez and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. 42/1000 3nodding
€³: December 07: Added Trainspotting, Wuthering Heights and The Moonstone. 45/1000
another €: March 09 2010: Read Fight Club. 46/1000
€€€€: November 21: Added Lord of the Flies which I had not marked earlier (not seen probably). 47/1000
Might as well join in. I'm at 51/1001 right now xp

MY TOTAL
77 / 1001

A good deal of them were school reads, but the list didn't say that they had to be books that you picked up by choice and were not directed to by a higher authority. At least I hope not. If it did, then I completely missed that part C:
Ok i got to say i am a reader but on that list i have only read about a handful of them. And i feel ashamed. sad So yea i mean and you left off or it seemed you did a a lot of classics... idk if i got it all because the print so small.
