It was not long that Tobias had to wait before the others started appearing. They had all escaped the sight of those wretched things in the inverted tower. The part of Tobias angry at his ‘comrades’ for bailing out on the fight by this point went away. He might bring that up in some later argument—if there was a later for their group—but it was of no consequence now. Not with all the gold coins and jewels and treasure around. The others quickly went through the huge sum of treasure in the room. Tobias kept his eyes off of them, since he was attempting to engage in small talk with barrier girl.
“Hey, Daggers! Found something for yeh!” Aiden called out.
That gave Tobias more time than he would ever need to react. As he turned, he caught sight of the glimmering knife Aiden held. The male threw it at him. It was off-target, or maybe intended to miss. Tobias could not imagine why Aiden would actually want to hit him. Forget that the rogue had earlier thrown a knife right at Aiden’s own head. Regardless, the blade whizzed safely to his side, contacting the wall and falling into a pile of coin. There were two choices to Tobias: react violently, or enjoy the moment.
He shook his head, chuckling softly and turned to retrieve the gold-hilted dagger from the pile of coins. He judged it, finding it both valuable and well crafted. He slipped it into his lefthand chest pocket.
“Thank you, friend. I’ll keep it close to my heart,” he responded with a grin.
The comment was hardly heartfelt. It did sound that way, but he did not consider anyone he knew friend. Acquaintances worth not killing, perhaps, but not friend. Even so, Tobias lived quite in the moment, so while he could actually consider you worth not killing, he might kill you anyway in a rage or just because it was profitable. In this case, it was just not profitable to fight; the gold and jewels were also quite blinding. Nasrin’s earlier question was a good one, since it seemed like an ungodly amount of wealth they were just sitting in.
“Look,” called Nasrin to the others.
Tobias turned, curious what in particularly could be so interesting to actually warrant showing. With him, if it was important or valuable he would not flaunt it around. Oh well, he moved closer to find that Nasrin had discovered a tiny skeleton. It was most clearly a juvenille bird-reptile. Shortly after that, Nasrin pulled up what looked like a stone. However, it was not a stone as she seemed to realise.
“These are eggs, then?”
Tobias cocked his head to the side, unsure. After all, it sure looked like a stone. But then again, it also looked like an egg. That made it an egg of one of those bird monsters then. Tobias wondered how it got in here, unaware they were the cause of the whole attack when the bandits had opened the sarcophagus. He did not comment on her jest toward her blond comrade, though he did realise that their unofficial leader was slightly injured.
Time to play the concerned friend bit.
“Speaking of which,” he asked, motioning to her as she displayed some slight discomfort. “will you be alright with that. I’m sure no one will mind if you bandage it with one of these beautiful silk shawls”
He picked up one of them. It was in a small pile with some other high quality articles of clothing. Nothing that Tobias was interested. He had his tunic, his pants, his boots, and his cloak. There was nothing else he required in terms of attire. Besides, gaudy clothing with jewels or just flowy ones tended to get one killed. Tobias had killed a few idiots that way. He smiled at the memory of a particular would-be femme fatale. The natural smile might endear some trust in the young thief.
