The sun was up and Hunters Headquarters was still quiet. Lacey was in a large conference room, the Director at the head of the table, the four leaders separated equally on each side along with several of their lead scientists. Lacey's feet were on the table, leaning precariously back with her arms behind her head as she gazed intently at the Director. He had just finished explaining the next phase, each of their orders, and the emergency back up plan if all fails. They were reassured however that this would not fail. But just in case. Never hurt to be too careful. He now gave one of the scientists a nod for her to speak.
The woman had long, wavy purple hair, several scars, and despite the usual attire of her fellow colleagues, was wearing a skin tight leather suit. She looked more prepared for battle than messing around with Petri dishes, considering the belt of throwing knives around her left thigh, but Lace had been reassured by the Director that this woman had been around the block several times over. Her name was Kokuna Idris, an adept student in Virology, she had been one of the ones behind a deadly virus that was released in a small town somewhere in the United States. The Director was the one who had helped cover up the incident and had given her a new life, a fresh start. Though there was more to the story then what he told Lacey, she didn't press him for any more detail. As long as he trusted her, Lacey would force herself to do the same.
Kokuna held up a small jar with what looked like a small off-white colored ball inside of it. When everyone's eyes were focused curiously on the jar, she spoke. "This small misshapen orb you see in this jar is made up of a potent and fatal virus. From the moment the existence of monsters was made known to humanity, a small group of us was tasked with finding a more subtle solution to their extinction. What you see before you is that solution." Kokuna held the jar in front of her now, gazing it over strangely. It was hard for Lacey to read her expression exactly, but she swore there was remorse in the scientist's hardened eyes. She cleared her throat and gave Kokuna a cold look. The two stared at each other for a second before Kokuna finally looked away to rest the jar carefully on the table in front of her. The hardened expression she had been wearing seconds ago returned and she continued.
"The problem with these Abnormals is that most of their genomes either vary too greatly for us to find only one solution to eradicate them all, or that their genetic makeup is too close to ours to differentiate us from them. Or that's what we thought at least. It wasn't until a decade ago that our researchers stumbled across a small gene that almost all Abnormals share. The 'A' gene, as our scientists nicknamed it, is shared among seventy percent of their various species. This virus has been designed to attack any creature that has this gene in their biological makeup. Carriers of the 'A' gene will almost immediately begin to succumb to it, symptoms first appearing to only be a cold or flu. Within seventy-six hours their bodies will have completely shut down. Internal hemorrhaging has been noted in several of our cases and has been the cause of death.
"There may be several cases of simple humans being contaminated with the virus, and unfortunately there will be no guarantee that they will not be killed by it. However I was instructed that this would be a fairly good trade off for the amount of damage we will deal to our enemies. An antidote has been created and will be distributed to everyone here. We hope that we will be able to make extra batches to aid those caught in the cross-fire. As stated, at least thirty-percent of Abnormals will not be effected by the virus, but we are continuing our research on what we can do on our end to make up for that disappointment."
Kokuna nodded her head to the Director, signaling that she was done with her speech just as a crackling cry of help came through on the squad leaders' communicators.
"Guess we're adjourned, Director?" Lacey asked with a smile before pulling her legs down from the table and standing up. "Seems we may have some company, mon sha. Let's have everyone fall back inside. Snipers on the roof of the building. Let the enemy come to us."
