In the past few months, I've been creating and curating a series of Disney princess cosplays.


I wouldn't have had nearly as much fun with this series had it not been for the people following this project.
Whether it was PMs of encouragements or comments offering feedback on the CHOOSE FOR ME threads, your
investment in this process gave me reason to continue.

❧ Be respectful. I know how the Disney fandom can be. Racism, sexism, homophobia,
transphobia, classism, ableism, and other forms of bigotry aren't welcome here.


❧ Please don't ask me about equipped lists. With every item update, the princesses stay
works-in-progress, and whether I like it or not, this project has entailed a grueling
and community-engaging journey. Every cosplay has undergone discourse with
the AvatarTalk community, whose immense support and commentary have
given me the encouragement to not forfeit this project altogether.

Given the laborious process of this collection, the last thing I need is for people to feel
possessive of the time and effort that other users and I have contributed in these
avatars. So though I may be in the future, I'm not open to disclosing their lists at
this point in time.

However, I deeply encourage asking the eagle-eyed experts on the What’s That Item?
thread, whose accuracy in decoding avatars and promptness of feedback are
nothing short of astonishing.

The following aren't so much rules than they are things to keep in mind to increase chances of winning.

❧ I don't like full backgrounds. If need be, I usually go with a background cutter.

❧ No voldymortys. Please add noses.

❧ I'm not a fan of (shoujo) anime eyes.

❧ I tend to gravitate towards avatars that use arm and leg mods.

❧ The gown was inspired by the Original Limited Edition Snow White doll. also
regency gowns

❧ I know Snow White's the youngest Disney princess at 14 (Moana's 16), but I initially gave
her a more mature look, as she has in the Disney Designer Collection. But in the end,
I modified the eyes and lips to resemble Snow's chirpier self (07/01/2020)

❧ The idea that women have to disclaim their beauty in order to be beautiful is tired, so I
like that she's holding a mirror, as though self-aware of her looks.

❧ At the time of making this avatar, I had no idea I'd be starting a series. In fact, I didn't
need to buy anything outside my preexisting closet.

❧ In being the first, the Snow White cosplay set up some precedents for the rest of the
series. For one, each princess is placed inside a glass case with an uncontainable
background. In Snow White's case, you can see snowy branches User Image
(Season of White) growing outside the glass.

❧ 10/18/2020 I grew up reading a couple versions of Snow White in my library. I owned
a copy of Charles Santore's illustrated rendition, which contains some truly stun-
-ning page spreads. And of course, there's Trina Schart Hyman's timeless version
which has always been a wonderful read for adults and children alike. In hindsight,
perhaps I was subconsciously thinking of her drawings of Snow White (see: the
red-orange flower designs on the avatar's dress).

❧ This, not this. I stayed faithful to the blue of her original dress, since nothing really captures
the magic of the original transformation and its ethereal color. (The scene wasn't Walt's
favorite piece of animation for nothing.)

❧ I found myself constantly using Cinderella's look in Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018 ) for
reference. I liked the hair, and she has ears

❧ Ended up not using any version of Glass Dream, which was honestly surprising because I
was sure I'd be using at least the black choker User Image or the trademark headband with
earpieces User Image.

❧ Cindy's story is one of survival, and it's fair to say that there's more to her than most
people take her for. I thought freckles and straw-colored hair (as opposed to
golden locks) would reflect her origins of imperfection.

❧ At this point in time, my priority wasn't making accurate cosplays; I intended them to diverge
from the princesses' original outfits in some way - and still do to some extent. Given this
preference, I was on the fence for a while about keeping asymmetrical sleeves for Cindy.
I'm glad people pointed out how two poofy sleeves looked better, because I quite agree!

❧ I really tried to give Aurora a blue dress, but in the end, I felt the series was
missing pink. It's a shame, since blue is what she wears in her awakening
and family reunion.

❧ I wanted her to look high sleepy

❧ Maleficent's too cool to not to be included. Fairytale princesses need their
curses and dragons.

❧ There wasn't enough space in the neck, and because Gaia's golden neck-
laces appear bulky, I chose to focus on Aurora's namesake V-neck
bodice. I faced a similar spatial issue with Gaia's spinning wheels like
User Image in La Jolie Dormeuse.

❧ I love that it appears she might be holding a sword. Completely intentional.
Totally planned it to seem that way.

❧ Though her design has been one of my favorites out of all the princesses,
I wish Aurora had more agency as a character. After all, a rose without
thorns isn't a rose.

❧ But I was obsessed with having an underwater cosplay. If Gaia had let me,
I would've made an Ariel floating upside down with swirling hair.

❧ Ariel's pose is from this scene when she admires herself in the mirror,
smitten and humming.

❧ Think I tried on about twenty bras to get the most optimal cleavage
❧ For the longest time, I was on the fence about including User Image from Horse
Seafilly, perhaps as a barnacle growing on the glass. It's a nice effect, but
unfortunately, there were absolutely no listings at the time. So I moved
on and convinced myself that her tail framing the bottom of the glass
was enough. Behold, the power of lowering standards. Anyhow, it
worked, and besides, two objects of clearly different shades
extending out from the case would be clumsy.

❧ The white dorsal fin near Ariel's tail could be a reference to her outwitting the
Great White near the beginning of the movie.

❧ Ariel was one of my favorite princesses growing up. Her thirst for knowledge
was almost scientific. The way she hoarded collected and curated found
objects to hypothesize their uses was refreshing, especially in an early
Disney princess.

❧ Belle's dress is iconic so there was a lot riding on this one. Emma's dress was a mess. It's true because it rhymes.

❧ The avatar gives obvious reference to the infamous ballroom scene in "Tale As Old As Time." That meant I
needed a background with a chandelier, French windows, and of course, Mrs. Potts.

❧ Because the glass case already evokes the one containing the magical rose in the movie, I thought it'd be fitting to
make Belle's dress reminiscent of a rose. I also drew inspiration from her gown in the Disney Designer Collection
Doll series.

❧ This is a cosplay that goes to show an avatar is never truly finished. I submitted the third Belle avatar for the Arenas,
only to find a warmer ambient lighting a few weeks later. A couple days later, I completely changed the background.
I remember making a CHOOSE for ME thread about this because to some extent, I had difficulty breaking away
from the first background User Image (Wedding Venue). You can get possessive over the most arbitrary things.
❧ I held a thread about whether to have the white petticoat User Image (from Deceptively Sweet Fragrance) show. Though
I appreciated the effect from the layering, I found that the white made the rose on the ground look awkwardly
floating. It was one of the few public polls I chose to override.

❧ I wanted a hair that recalled the little strand Belle keeps tucking in behind her ear throughout the movie.

❧ Emma Watson failed to do Belle justice in the 2017 film, which I see as the worst Disney live action film to date -
perhaps until the Orientalist trainwreck that is Aladdin (2019) is released.

❧ Needless to say, I have thoughts when I see this Jasmine. It's an embellished recreation of her original design,
which was essentially a racist caricature of Arab women. Equally as important is the fact that Jasmine is so
******** light here, which is the exact criticism I have with Naomi Scott's casting.

❧ Clearly, this avatar points to larger problems about Gaia's item database. The items in this cosplay were listed
in the following tags, besides Arab and Arabian: Egypt, Egyptian, harem, djinn, bangles, desert, rogue, exotic,
veil. The very fact that this helpful albeit problematic guide treats Arabian and Egyptian as interchangeable
shines a hard light on Gaia's conflation and mythologization of Middle Eastern and African cultures.

❧ The well-documented reality that darker skins are harder to work with on this site is also worth noting. When
I gave Jasmine a darker skin mod, it drowned out the shade of her lips and made her eyebrows practically
invisible. The mod made it seem like she had suffered a terrible sunburn on the torso; no matter what I did,
the legs and arm mods didn't blend. It's a travesty because many have liked this cosplay, saying it recalls
Disney's original design of the character - but again, is that really a good thing?

❧ The last thing I wanted was for Jasmine was the hypersexualization she receives in her movie. I forewent excessive
exposure and tried my best - given the items Gaia has - to diverge from the harem outfit she wears in Aladdin.
I found references in designs by Nina S. (Wickfield), Willemijn van Hagen, Em, Edwardo Todd, RainbowEmpress,
and Claire Hummel. Still, the exposed navel bothers me.
❧ Initially, I wanted User Image Cinnamon Mocha Kahvesi to bring more red into the magic carpet. But eventually,
I decided against it, not just because purple gives the carpet more cohesiveness but also because
Cinnamon Mocha Kahvesi is a stinking pain in the a** to get. It hasn't had a listing in years.

❧ I wanted to include Raja but he couldn't fit into the glass case. Besides, if I remember correctly, the tiger is left
behind on the magic carpet ride.

❧ The Aladdin live-action is going to be such a ********. Jasmine's Europeanized outfit, the casting of a black
man to play a genie who is essentially enslaved, the casting of ugly white guy, the casting of a light-skinned
Jasmine, literal brownface because apparently there's a shortage of brown people (lord have mercy)

❧ [Update Apr. 12] I had a moment of serendipity when I came across a blush item while cleaning up my
wishlist. For the time being, it's a temporary solution, as it helps give Jasmine's skin tone the melanin
it deserves. Still, insufficient...

❧ [Update July 22] "Speechless" saved the movie. It's still got its problems, but I'll be damned, I've crushed that
song's replay button.

❧ The cosplay pays homage to the Canoeing Action in "Just Around the Riverbend." Though "Colors of the Wind"
is more well-known and in terms of animation, equally as beautiful, I didn't want to celebrate a song that
conflates a mediocre colonizer man into a romantic interest. I have qualms about even including
Pocahontas in the Disney lineup because historical revisionism is racist.

❧ One of the things I've learned in this project is that there's a visual economy to keep in check to create a
sense of seamlessness in an avatar. As much as I enjoy clutter, it has little place in the work of cosplay.
In the case of Pocahontas, for example, I decided it'd be better to bring focus to her mother's
necklace over embellishing her top with User Image in Season of White. (see: third avatar)

❧ I was happy with this skin mod. It matches her skin tone

❧ All of the changes with Pocahontas dealt with the dress. The lack of viable items in the Native American tag
posed a challenge for this cosplay. I remember scrolling the entire belts tag for the dress.

❧ The willow tree branches in the back are meant to recall Grandmother Willow. But the pale blue smudge near
her left hand - is it a leaf? Let's say it's a blurry Flit, Pocahontas's hummingbird who keeps Meeko at bay.

❧ Speaking of the devil, the only reason I didn't include Meeko was that both of Gaia's raccoon items position
the animal in a way that clutters the boat User Image Raccoon Companion or on top of the head User Image(Oink
Rowdy Raccoon), and I couldn't have a creature of vermin steal the glory that is Pocahontas's hair, could I

❧ the 2015 Aryan Cinderella with impossible waists wishes it could be this movie

❧ I remember it like yesterday - at Costco, holding the VHS tape with Brandy in the most ethereal dress
I'd seen. My mom approved the purchase, though not before some comments. A Black Cinderella?

❧ 20 years later, I found myself watching the film again and have replayed the soundtrack hundreds of
times.
I remember as a kid, I'd sing "The Stepsisters' Lament" in my grandmother's room. I'd lie with my
legs up against the wardrobe, channeling their envy, until one of the relatives would open the door.
Why did I want to break whose arm?

❧ Reading the oral history of the movie's behind-the-scenes production gave me further cause to dedicate
a cosplay to this pivotal work. Believe it or not, Walt Disney television did produce it despite it also
being part of the problem in bringing the project to its fruition

❧ From the get-go I wanted to pay tribute to the Klimt influences in the movie's set design. If only Gaia released
a background version of this item User Image! The scenery needed to have gold accents, since Cinderella's
always surrounded by gilded structures - be it her carriage, her stepmother's house, her prince's palace.

❧ Gold is also the color associated with her fairy godmother, and well, we wouldn't have had this Cinderella
without Whitney. As the famous tale goes, Houston bequeathed the role intended for her to the Brandy,
personally phoning the young singer. The to-be princess in turn replied she'd only accept the role if her
lifelong inspiration would play her godmother.

❧ A concern I kept in mind was the need to differentiate this Cinderella from Tiana, who also wears a similar
blue gown. Fortunately, I found better eyes and nude lips to evoke the soft cautiousness Cinderella
exudes throughout the movie. The harder task was seeking a hair resembling Brandy's coils. The fact
that Gaia has billions in its Item Database and yet so few showcase natural hair is a travesty. Please
sir, may we have some more

❧ Mulan is my favorite Disney princess. The moment I decided to take on this project, I knew that I'd reserve two whole avatars
for Mulan to celebrate her gender fluidity. It was only a matter of which outfits to choose from. Ultimately, I found the
pairing of her soldier uniform and homecoming dress the most interesting, esp. with respect to the original ballad

❧ Soldier uniform I couldn't for the life of me find a cape with the right shade of green for Mulan. The ones I saw in the cape and
cloak tag were too lime, neon, turquoise. The one that came closest was User Image from Winter Retaliator, but it covered too
much of her torso, making it unable to discern whether she was holding the sword or it was floating midair. In the end, I
chose a crimson one that recalled Shang's, as it would make sense that if he had to bestow his father's cape upon anyone,
it'd be Mulan.

❧ The dragon could be a reference to the "I aM thE inDEstrUctiBLE - Mushu" scene, but I like to think that it's what his real form
looked like before his demotion. Though his appearance explains the flames, I thought the bright yellows of User Image Infernal
Spirit distracted from the overall look. In the end I went with a more muted landscape that still possessed visual intensity.
I'm very pleased with the final image, of Mulan with dragon, stepping over a creek to join a battle scene.

❧ Homecoming outfit There's not much to say other than that this gown took time. My god. It's my favorite outfit in the entire
movie because it's the dress that is completely her own. The first outfit (which Disney is completely misguided in making
her official merch dress) is literally the gown in which she sings "Reflection," a song about her inability to identify with
her self-image. The soldier outfit is her father's - and stolen, too; later, Mulan cries in the snow while holding his
helmet in her hands, struggling to reconcile with the reflection it provides. But this dress. This is what Mulan
chooses to wear when she outwits Shan-Yu and saves China, when she returns home and embraces the father
who needs no souvenirs to know she is worthy.

❧ Edit 09/16/2020: Just to confirm, Soldier!Mulan aims to celebrate the OG Mulan voiced by Ming-Na Wen, not the
Great Value version bastardized this year by Liu Yifei, an outspoken proponent for police brutality and fascism.
Movie's an Orientalist nightmare, as if there were any more reasons to #boycottmulan

❧ The Atlantis tag was completely useless.

❧ As it was with Ariel, if Gaia had had the items, I'd have assembled a floating Kida, ascending the Crystal
Chamber with hair like chaotic perfection.

❧ For Kida, I tried to focus more on visual cues that indicated her owning her sexuality. Though the leg mod
got in the way of longer skirts, I thought an open and powerful stance would emphasize a sense of
agency and self-possession in her look.

❧ Finding a suitable crystal pendant proved to be time-consuming. On one hand, a necklace that came
to her chest would seem to be a part of the bra; any higher would look like a choker. Pendants that
came to her navel were the most optimal, but even then, they couldn't descend lower - else they be
absorbed into the skirt. The color and shape had to be distinguishable as well.

❧ Most of all, I wanted the avatar to convey the sense that there was power crackling from within. The grooves
on the wall that Kida presses her hand against evoke Atlantean designs. The splashing water and glass
cracking worked well as finishing touches.
❧ I made a CHOOSE FOR ME thread regarding Kida's arms. Though I loved the bracelet in User Image Graceful
Repose, I ended up agreeing it lacked persona and chose one that made it seem she was holding
another necklace in her hand (perhaps Milo's?). This pose and the waterfalls in the back loosely
reference the scene when Kida introduces the crew to Atlantis.

❧ You know what would be great? if Milo were an indigenous woman instead of a white savior

❧ Tiana deserves everything, including a full length movie where she isn't an animal.

❧ Tiana had the most costume changes (just as she did in the movie!). If this series began with a Snow White that didn't perfectly
imitate her Disney look, it certainly ended up with a decision to choose an accurate gown over a more experimental one
(see: fourth avatar). Though I love the top User Image from Little Pond Chingwa, the fourth dress reminds me too much of
a princess ice cream cake.
❧ To my genuine surprise, the gown User Image from Song of Desire ended up being scrapped early on. I can't help but feel the
artist had Tiana's dress in mind, since the item has her trademark flower on the side. As it's the dress most Tiana
cosplays use, I'd bought it as early as the assembling of the Ariel cosplay.

❧ Once again, finding lips and blush that worked with darker skin required research. Luckily, this thread proved helpful.
Tiana's skin tone alone requires 7 items.

❧ I looked for hair that evoked Tiana's natural curls. Out of all the princesses' hers is the most complex, requiring not one,
not two, but three hair cutters.

❧ The glowing lights around her not only reference the fireflies but also provide warm ambience to the avatar, which pays
clear homage to Tiana's wedding scene when she becomes a princess. I'd been flirting with the idea of using a night
background to give the fireflies more discernibility. But I found myself gravitating back to the original background. The
golden ambience looks even better juxtaposed with the other princesses.

❧ I was going to write how the butterfly on the corner could serve as a reference to the one that Naveen wears as a bowtie,
but forget it. I'm done.
