I think the main reason people still go to GenCon is because of the history attached to it. GenCon LLC (The company designed to run GenCon and nothing else which wasn't created until '03) made a lot of fan pissing off blunders but people still line up every August to get tickets anyways.

It was pretty much the start of modern US gaming as any sort of appreciable hobby. It's creators were responsible for games such as Dungeons and Dragons. Over the years, many games were unveiled and promoted into popularity there, starting with table top and eventually pressing on into video games. For a length of time in the ninties, no one released a game without taking it to GenCon. That was just what you did.

How it got to this point of jacked up, is that TSR, former publishers of D&D (Who's founding company members started GenCon in the first place), had to sell out to WoTC (Of Magic the Gathering fame), who then had to sell out to Hasbro. The Former CEO of WoTC bought GenCon off Hasbro since they had little interest in running a game convention, and he's proceeded to run the con right into the ground.

Haha, well, diablo has the diehards like starcraft. Also curious to see what their next intellectual property's gonna be since it's not based on any of the main three. Sorc's awesome! Otherwise I play amazon or assassin, I think I played necro for a while but not long enough for him to be worth much.

Yeah, I knew about the whole tsr thing and forgot about the hasbro sell. That explains a ton though, I still prefer 2nd edition over 3rd. (isn't there a 4th already now?)

I should go look at the rulebooks sometime, or pick up another monstrous manual at the very least. Good for drawing ideas and ref even if I don't like the new rules.
