It really depends a bit on the child. Everyone's got their own learning style, though it often takes a bit to be clued into their style.

In general though, I usually talk through what we need to do, work through an example myself, then let them have a go at using the concept until they feel confident. Some younger students in particular tend to learn well through play, so after explaining what needs to be done, employing a concept in a game can be good (but not always feasible).
