About

My goodness... 11/05, LTL started the grand adventure of the Colosseum. I took it over when she passed the torch and Torches to me in May, 2006.

What a grand ride it has been! So many poets, so many friends.

It is with great pleasure and honour that I now (as the time has come) pass that torch and Torches along to Adimurti, my darling friend and confidant. He will make it his own, carry on the traditions, and be a fresh voice for the Writers Forums, and no stranger there by any means.

My heart and gratitude go out to everyone who has contributed and been a part of these years... along with my affections. Such wonderful memories.

I love you all...

(Referring to the WW&CCF) I was going to reformat all of this, and then it became unimportant. I have had so many glorious and amazing days and times here, in the Writing Forums of Gaia.We have met some wonderful people, formed a few lasting relationships, laughed, cryed... *smiles at the memories*.

It is time for us to pass the Torch that was lit by GrantOrg - the original Writing Contests Charity here in our own community (as opposed to the vast sea that is the usual home for Charities) - to the next hand.

GrantOrg became the Writers Workshop & Contest Charity Foundation, inheriting the original GrantOrg account and what few assets remained. It is our intention now to again pass the Torch, along with that original account.

If you are interested in doing a selfless, time-consuming, labour of love for the writers here, please do apply. You will be given the keys to these grand halls and enough in assets to keep you going for a while, and then it will up to you, like it was with those who came before, to keep it going with love, sweat, and tears which you will find well worth the time, patience, and sacrifice.

I will spend some time in quiet reflection before I make any decisions, give everyone some time to apply, ask my questions, put our affairs in order, and then lock only one private door, keep that key with me always, and turn over the others to new hands and hearts.

Its been a wonderful experience for me... I will be able to move on with that special peace which comes after a something is completed... enough said!

Written with heart-felt appreciations, respect, and affections...

I didn't want to post this in public however I would like to help in anyway I can. It is just I don't know if I could do it all on my own. I could do a large amount of the work as long as I knew you were around? I would hate to think your quitting gaia all together, even though I haven't always been here you've been a constant and a comfort, even when I'm just lurking behind the scenes. You know I treat you like an older sister, ever since you took me under your wing here ^^

let me know your not quitting gaia forever and I'll do all I can to help

love always Jess

Mahayr replied...

This means so much to me, thank you darling girl. I am not leaving Gaia, I will be here just as often.

Basically its just that I have become weighed down and not able to do much with the Charity, on the other hand there is not that much to do as applications are rare these days, and I haven't had time to go around investigating contests and just giving out random donations.

Also, I found myself being greedy and wanting things myself. I don't want to feel like that and Sqarr has been asking me for some time to let the charity go and just have fun on Gaia with no strings or obligations or feelings that I have to work haha.

Then I had a sale in the exchange. An expensive item. I got tons of offers. But there was this one young woman who had been questing for the item for very emotional and personal reasons... her offer was not the highest one, and I had seen her before and knew she was questing and why.

She made an offer in my sale where, she knew it wasn't the highest. I messaged her and we spoke a long time. She made me realize that getting the best price was not always the most important consideration, and I realized I had forgotten that. I have always given random donations to questers and new people, even non-writers.

I did end up taking her offer, even lower actually, and it was good for me to re-learn those lost lessons, despite the fact that I know Gaia has changed so much, and the economy along with it - the ridiculous prices, inflation, the bringing in of those rig and evolving items. Greed has infected the very people who, when working out of a garage, started Gaia.

I do not have to be like them and forget my roots and reasons, my goals and dreams and work, regardless of the fact that the GOLDEN rewards are soooo much less.

The REAL gold is in our hearts and intentions, our friendships and good deeds (with no expectations of personal recognition or gain). I do not want to ever forget that again.

I love you, and so many others here, and treasure each and every friendship I have been privileged to reap. I am so very blessed.

I am going to post this... I think it makes my reasons and feelings clear.

*hugs you tight*

Additional Rules Info by LongTimeListener
Duel Formats

Before the battle begins, the honorable (or not so honorable cool ) duelists must agree on a format for their duel. This can make it easier for judges, by making the poems more possible to compare, but you can also do it to make a point, as in "Ha! I always knew you were better at Sapphics than me!"

Please look carefully at the list before you post your listing, Defenders.

Double-Barreled Duel thanks to Mahayr for the idea!
Both duelists must submit both a first draft and an edited version. In addition to judging between the two poets, the judge must also decide which version of each poet's piece is better. The default double-barreled judging fee is twice the regular fee, either with crit or without. Which is sensible as this format requires twice the work for the judge as well as the duelist. wink

Anything Goes
Just what it says. Either duelist may post any sort of poem they wish, of any length or style.

Specific Phrase (thanks to Nuriko1 for the suggestion!)
Both duelists must use a specific phrase in their duel poem. It can be a single word, or a longer phrase such as a quotation.

Poetry formats:

(General Form)

arrow Poems must be rhyming
arrow Poems must be metered
arrow Poems must NOT be rhyming OR metered

(Specific Form)

arrow Acrostic
arrow Cinquain
arrow Double-dactyl
arrow Haiku/Senryu
arrow Limerick
arrow Pantoum
arrow Rondel
arrow Sapphic
arrow Sonnet
arrow Sestina

(Themes)
You can choose a theme either to REQUIRE or FORBID it. Your theme can be anything from coffee to cannibalism to candidness--ask in the main thread if you're having trouble coming up with ideas! ^_^

Grudge Matches

Now, if you want to challenge some one who isn't a defender, post this:
Quote:
"Grudge Match"
My name is:
I call out:
My item bet is:
Judge(s) I will accept:
(optional) Reason for grudge match:

You can only have one of these up at a time but you can remove or change it until some one responds.

And, finally, to accept a grudge match:
Quote:
"Grudge Accepted"
My name is:
My challenger's name is:
Challenger bets:
I bet:
Judge(s) I will accept:

Role Reversal Grudge Matches

This is a type of Grudge match where judges can duel and ask Defenders to judge them! Judges, fill out the same forms you would for a Grudge, but be sure to include the words "Role Reversal" in the title. Name the Defender(s) you wish to hire in the "Judge desired" slot. You and your opponent must agree on the duelist's judge fee before the duel can begin.

This way, the Critique of the Week award is theoretically open to Defenders as well as judges! eek Meaning a truly prolific Defender could, in theory, win all three awards in the same week!

Once a duel is ready to start, post your poems here:
The Colosseum: Dueling Grounds

Miscellaneous Rules

--Once you have posted a Duel poem, please PM your judge. This will make the duel process a little faster! And as a red-blooded American, I can tell you that faster is ALWAYS better. rolleyes Also, judges, feel free to PM duelists reminding them to send you payment so you can post their Enguarde, or to let them know that your judgment has been made.

--Duelists are strongly encouraged to write a brand new poem for each duel. However, if as a defender you wish to prepare a poem on your chosen topic in advance, or if a particular prompt exactly fits something you wrote in the past, you may use it.

--Judges may not volunteer as Defenders or Challenge Defenders. They may only paricipate in Grudge Matches and Role Reversal Grudge Matches.

--If your opponent posts their challenge poem and you do not, your bet may be forfeit to your opponent after as little as one week. This time limit is not iron clad, just a guideline.

--There is no minimum bet and no maximum bet.

--Duelists may be disqualified at my discretion, for any reason I see fit. I will try to be cautious and look at every side of an issue before disqualifying someone for anything other than challenge refusal, however. Please be courteous!
