Short story that I wrote:
Wave after wave crashed onto the golden sand, bringing strands of seaweed, shellfish and little pebbles amongst the white foam. Then one wave brought something that had never been seen on the beach before.
A girl drifted onto the sand, unconscious, hair splayed all over her face.
A few minutes later her eyes flickered open and she rolled over a spat out mouthful of sand. Her head spun and she stared around, watching a pirate ship sail off into the distance.
"...Curse the gods..." she muttered.
Charlotte, a nobleman's daughter, had been taken prisoner by the pirates a few days ago. They had kept her as ransom for three days, then on the dawn of the fourth day, she leaped overboard, knowing it was death or worse.
And now she was marooned on a stupid island in the middle of nowhere. Hope was lost.
But Charlotte was smart. She collected the shellfish that washed up on the sand and kept them alive in a small rock pool. She foraged for edible plants and berries
